This guy is a God send. Whether here or on GQ, he is a great teacher. I spent over two decades in the military so I knew how to shave, but growing, and maintaining a beard, was nothing I had experience with. This dude has set me straight!
YES... I'm in same boat. Retired from military over 5 years ago now and still trying to figure out this beard stuff. I had a beard back before going into uniform, but my hair is much different now.
My guy, I started to read the comments when he started with the garnish and I read your comment right as those words were coming out if his mouth I doubt that’ll ever happen again
Yall are making me feel lucky. I have medium density black hair but I have disconnect between all three areas so I never tried to grow anything except a goatee or Van Dyke with mutton chops or sideburns. It recently dawned on me that if I let the hairs grow that eventually the patches will be covered. 3 months later I have a full beard at 2.5 inches. I cant wait to see what I will have in a year from now. All I can say to you is don't give up if you really want a beard. Your beard us your beard and as long as you maintain it right it will look good eventually. There us also that microdermic needle roller that they offer on this channel that works to bring out dormant hairs.
I certainly ain't no man, just appreciate this guy's videos. Great quality, and clearly cares about helping men with their facial hair grooming. Legend!
I've got a duck tail style one or as I usually call it Abraham Lincoln style which is fine, my only issue is sometimes even after using beard shampoo/conditioner there's sometimes it still likes to frizz up and get all scruffy looking and I'm not sure what I need to prevent it, like most the time it's fine but I'd say 2 maybe 3 days a week it's just sticking up like crazy.
My husband has known since we started dating that I'm a beard-girl. Love them, love them love them. 17 years in and he finally suggested that I take over the landscaping! Wow! I didn't know how much I would love it! Started with your videos and it has become my every two weeks passion. Grrrrr Baby!!!!!!
I’m on 8.5 years. I’ve started using Shea Moisture beard wash and oil. They work great and smell even better. I might start using a pick and/or brush. I have a handmade comb, but it still pulls a lot out.
My husband has a beard. It hasn’t made this list though. I _thought_ the Captain Birdseye was an actual style. It really suits my husband, although I know he will look 100% better once the barbers open for proper beard grooming again. I’ve had a full year of trying to keep his hair and beard looking tidy and presentable.
I see why I have a full beard now. I had almost a full mustache in 4th grade 😂😂 I did nothing but shave because my beard and stuff would come in like crazy. Now I am letting it grow and it’s the best choice I ever made. All those years of shaving my face clean paid off.
The funny part about the soul patch section is that the image of the guy with the soul patch is Matty himself! So he's basically dissing himself lol! What a sport! Solid dude, great knowledge and great sense of humour!
Somehow a different Matty video came up on my recommends. I decided to watch this one, even though I can't grow anything on my cheeks. Then, he gets to "The Goatee"! I'm not left out!
My beard is alot like yours, except I don't shave my neck. I haven't shaved sence 1980. I did just take about 9 inches off. It got to be a pain in the butt having it that long. I do like your video and thank you.
I have had a beard since 2006 2007 around then! Over the years until now I have only shaven the beard off twice. Even though I used to having a beard and know how to maintain it and the skin below it. I still like to check out on new tips.
I currently grow a long beard, but debating on switching to the full beard instead. I have the capability to grow an awesome mustache, and it think it would compliment better with the full beard over the long.
I keep my full beard tight, mainly because my head hair is so thick I don't let it grow out too long, and having a beard means I don't keep it as short on the sides as I normally prefer. I alternate between full beard and goatee when I get bored with one style. It's fuller than it used to be as I get older, but now my beard is more white than my head. All the red hairs I had on my head went white, and my beard seems to have had most of them. Not having to shave as much is a big plus.
Great info Matty, love the video. As for me - Looking to do a shorter version of the Lumberjack style beard with a thinner overall face look PLUS a strong jaw line. I have the WAHL trimmer set bought at the pharmacy for about 16 bucks but does work well for me, no troubles. thanks again and keep your Great video's coming.
I switch between ducktail and lumberjack trimmed it's a ducktail then it grows into a lumberjack I use Shea butter balm all natural fantastic for a full beard.
I think my goal is to grow my beard out for a full year using minoxidil twice a day, moisturizing a few times a week, and using a beard brush daily. That's just to see my potential, and if cheeks are still patchy the Van Dyke looks so cool !
You have totally missed out the classical handle bars moustache. Not a hyped thing anymore but still a thing in especially countries like Italy and France.
I'm so glad you had the big beard on your list. I'm 58, not a hipster. I just love the look. I get lots of compliments. Mostly by other gents who wish they could grow their beards out but their better half won't let them. I bucked against my other half. We haven't kissed on over 3 years. Oh well, her loss....😉
It really depends on what’s in it... and why skin type you have... most beard oils I have found are much heavier than they need to be and running heavier oil into an oily skin type will wreak havoc.
@@mattyconradgrooming yeah definitely some oil will make you break out if its too heavy, I personally use castor oil on my short beard, (which is way heavier than most beard oils) and I don't break out because it has great anti-bacterial properties.
Matty please start a thing where we can send in a photo of our faces "obviously with a beard" and you give us some tailored advice. Sorry if that is weird.

You are the Beard Man, Matty! You really know your stuff. Your advice and descriptions are on point! Thanks for all the lingo and skill set that a great beard MUST have!
I always grow out my beard for about 1-2 months, then I shave the sides just leaving a Goatee. Then I continue to let it grow to full length (whatever that happens to be). I find that my chin grows much slower than my sides, so if I just let it all grow out at the same time, my beard is way too wide and round. Doing it this way gives my beard the ducktail point that I like. Now if only I could grow hair under my bottom lip and the center of my moustache. Always been jealous and sad that I can never grow a completely full beard, but everyone has areas they aren't satisficed with.
I feel you, with the center of my mustache mines is a comple centimeters from connecting which it never does, but I am able to grow a triangular beard, but it never seems to connect to my sides, so ya some people just don't have the best Genes.

And so I had it trimmed as I got my hair cut, I have oil, shampoo and conditioner and a new trimmer as I only had a hair clipper. But got everything so going to grow it back
Thank you for all this awesome info. Lately i’ve been growing out my beard and learning how to shape it myself, already got a nice clipper and now here i am :P. Subbed
