Deeper into North Pangnirtung Fjord I continued on the Arctic Ocean with my dog, documenting my trip while dealing with the challenges of the expedition and Arctic survival. Polar Bear human interaction was still a concern and would be until I got deep into Baffin Island's Akshakyuk Pass. Good weather made for good wilderness travel conditions and after about four hours of hauling, I made it to the pass. I did not want to travel any more that day, and because Polar Bear danger was still a concern here by the sea ice, I decided to stay in an emergency shelter for safety. I collected snow blocks and melted water with my Double Burner Coleman Stove, drank some water, cooked dinner and went to sleep.
The next morning, I awake to extremely strong winds. It was not particularly cold out but the winds were blowing at about 80kmph and I decided to walk into them anyways. It was not a good choice. After pushing hard into the wind, I realised I'm not making it very far at all and began to sweat and exhaust myself. After making it about one or two km, I decided to turn back and I took refuge in the emergency shelter again. The day drags on and on and the weather doesn't break. Finally, late in the evening, the weather subsides. Akshayuk Pass can act as a wind tunnel and I'd experienced a little of the strong winds it can muster. I climbed in bed again, ready to begin a good day of travelling the following morning.
I awoke at about 5am to howling winds, and at first light, I discover a full-on Blizzard outside. I didn't consider travelling at all this day. It's a long and boarding day hanging out with Buck in the shelter and I kicked myself for forgetting my book. The weather had not calmed come evening and I started thinking that maybe it would never break....I started feeling a little stir crazy.
Finally, after spending three nights in the survival shelter, the weather broke and I began travelling on a beautiful morning...but as Buck and I began trekking, the wind started picking up again.

yeah those high winds could've pushed you ya'll packs over and thats no fun when you trying to get somewheres !
I just became aware of your channel and am enjoying this window into a world that i love and will never experience in my life time. Thank you for this. Very sorry for the loss of your beautiful iconic brother Buck. Your films are an honour to him and will live forever. I will be watching them many times over. I cried with you for your loss and it brought me back to the one of a kind dog that i had the pleasure of sharing my life with as well. My prayer is for God to maintain strength to navigate the life challenges ahead for you and your wife and son. There will not be another Buck but You know how to pick them and dogs also pick their owners. Keep your heart open to this. It takes awhile.
I am so bummed, I have been watching this series and love Buck and how good of a dog he is and I just saw your send off video. It has to be really hard to edit and post these videos with him being gone now. He was a great dog that lived the life of 50 normal dogs!!! He will be missed...
Kudos to you Jim and dear Buck having made a great journey to Bafin Island. Quite inspiring!
Thanks a lot!
Total respect! Forever fan! 😉👌👍🐾💜🇨🇦
Awesome, thanks! Great to have you here
Thanks Jim, for another great video of your adventures with Buck. I know that you miss him. ....so do all of us.
Thanks
There can be no doubt, Buck has you well trained. And thank goodness, with a partner like Buck (i have not watched all of your content but it does seem that maybe Buck has passed, my condolences) your travels will be measured, safe, and the added warmth in the tent is always welcome from Buck as well as yourself. A symbiotic relationship that brings the most basic joy to the experience.
This is true, he helps me and I help him and it would be a struggle to do this trip without each other. Buck died just after Christmas right when I started editing this video series. I had to put it on hold for a while because the footage was making me say but now it feels bitter sweet. We weren’t expecting to loose him so soon.
@@JimBairdAdventurer i am very sorry to hear that Buck has passed. I had a clue with looking at some of the titles to recent videos, but I am patiently watching your content rather than gorging on it. Buck carries on in the legacy of your videos! I look forward to the next Baffin Island episode. RIP MR. BUCK!

You’re welcome!
Guess I am the only one who isn’t hearing you talk. I see no one else commenting on this. You are a true adventurer and an animal lover which I respect.
Hey man, thanks a lot. Are you listening with ear phones? If so, you have to have both in because my voice is only coming out of one channel. Sorry about that! And thanks
Thankyou for the adventure Jim.
You’re welcome!
buck, "dude! you always forget the camera and we have to go back!"
Haha!
Noticed the same thing on the first episode, he looked at the camera like why are you walking away?
Brother, I love going on your adventures with you. I will support you on your adventures and tell everyone I know to watch. 👏🏼
That is awesome! Thanks a lot and the more people I can connect with the better I think. Have a great day and I’m glad to hear you’re liking the adventures!
What an awesome series Jim...and Buck will live forever in your epic footage. I can't wait for the next episode!
Thanks
Absolutely EPIC scenery with sunny days, other than a couple of days of wind.
Thanks very much. The interesting weather is to be expected too.
Stunning....what a trip! You make us Ontarians proud!
Big thanks man!
Great series, Jim - and I do love seeing Buck smiling while pulling his load next to you. I'm a Labrador Lover and know the extreme love of a loyal dog and the extreme pain of loss when one of them crosses over. Wishing you many loyal dogs throughout your adventurous life!
Thank you 😊 o love labs too. Another dog I had that was amazing like Buck was primarily a black lab mix with some sort of hound and pointer. Just an amazing dog.
What another GReat adventure .You n Buck must have had some good talks on your travel .Jim that dog will be with you Always in Spirit,Your videos are Very inspiring to us all and we all appreciate all the work you put into it you make your family proud i am sure .thank you for taking us along once again CHEERS....
You are very welcome and I do feel that Buck is with me in spirit. Thanks a lot for watching and for the great comment.
Magic stuff Jim. Absolutely spectacular.
Thanks very much!
Awesome Jim loved every minute
Thanks 🙂
Ah man, how awesome was Buck?!?! I've had a once in a lifetime dog, it's been a decade and I still miss him. But I'm a better person because he was in my life.
Better than tv keep up the great videos I just can’t get enough
Great to hear, thanks a lot!
Jim I’m watching this and episode 5 in my hospital bed. Cancer surgery apparently went well know learning how to cope with the missing body parts. Lol. What beautiful country and savagery of it. All the best to you tori and Wesley
That is great news that it went well Bulky! So good to hear. Thanks a lot and get well.
You are a man of a lot of courage 👍

Those shelters are so awesome!
Thanks Mike!
Jim & Buck goes... EPIC ! ! ! :] ]

Youre a champ and deserve 100x more views!
Thanks!!
Very true
Ah brother I just read Buck died recently, I'm so sorry for your loss,he was a great dog and must have been a great comfort for you on many a chilly, lonesome night in the wilderness. RIP Buck. On a cheerier note I've just recently found your channel and have been enjoying it very much. Thanks for all your hard work so that couch potatoes, like me, can still enjoy The Great Outdoors, if in a somewhat less strenuous fashion! lol All the best and looking forward to more.
Thanks a lot for watching and for your comments about Buck. I just finished up ep. 5 so it’ll be out next Fri. Have a great weekend!
Just incredible Jim! What a guy buck was. Very hard for me to watch when hes looking at the camera. It's so amazing the trips you guys took together.
Thanks!
I just started watching and subscribed. I did see the title of a future video. What an amazing dog!💜
The most important item he brought with him: The single malt. No idea what it is, but booze is life.
Haha, yup...it was Glenlivit founders reserve...and did you see the old piece of glass from an old explorers bottle of scotch?
Wind, especially strong wind is always a challenge. You certainly lucked out with the shelter! Look forward to more.
That is the truth. Later on in the trip. The wind gets very strong again and I don’t have the luxury of a shelter.
@@JimBairdAdventurer I figured it would happen at some point. Spending a lot of time high up in the mountains I've come to know wind pretty intimidating.
Yeah Buck... Good boy!
👍
Another epic episode. Nice.
Thanks a lot! I have the next one finished off too.
Buck had us all trained! He never ate yellow snow, clearly upstaged you on every adventure, but was definitely your bud. I swear I'm not watching ahead on past comments. Something told me this weather is just too perfect for the Artic..... By the way when you were calling Buck for his treat, that echo was just spooky.
This is a great series Jim! Really enjoyed the Yukon one as well. Thanks for sharing!!
Awesome, thanks a lot both of you for tuning in.
Buck is such a good dog
Thanks!!
@@JimBairdAdventurer What a great companion Buck must be. Unrelated but also love how you brought the flask to break out for special moments along the trip. I hope to one day drink some single malt on Baffin Island.
I hope you get the chance to do just that!
A fascinating story and entertaining video. I am awed by the perseverance and courage. I was saddened to hear that Buck has passed away. Keep at it!!!
Will do and thank you!
Buck is the best dog ever!
Sure do miss buck he was a great dog !!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, me too
This whole adventure just shows how Buck is really a once in a lifetime dog. Looks like he was ALWAYS ready for an adventure. The snowy country was definitely his element.
Kinda makes me sad to watch Buck in action.
Your okay too Jim...lol
EDIT: That little shelter shack could seriously be a lifesaver.
Definitely although they aren’t the warmest but they sure won’t blow down like a tent! Thanks a lot about what you said about Buck. Much appreciated and I agree....and Buck always stoke the show lol
We have been catching up on this series. Everyone really enjoyed them. I appreciate the camp routine segments that others often omit in adventure videos. Well done Jim and Buck (RIP).
Much appreciated
Another great video in an awesome series! That was some serious wind you had! How fortunate to have had the emergency shelter when it hit.
Thanks! It was very nice to have the shelter for sure! I probably could have set my tent up behind that massive boulder to block the wind and cut some snow blocks out of the drifts to make a wall to block the wind further but it would have been real interesting.
Great adventure! Thanks for bringing me along!
You’re welcome!
Just right Tory is a fantastic unusually wife, give her and Wesley a hello from a frozen deep snowy Skandinavia Thanks for charing Jim.
I agree, thanks so much and I will for sure! Thanks a lot for watching
I'm glad you had a safe place to hunker down...with hot chocolate
Please be careful, hugs to your Dog, so beautiful tfs. New subscriber. The area is so georgous, but dangerous.
Thanks :) great to have you
beautiful,,,,,,,,,buck makes your videos stand out, plus you do what most of us will never do,we would most likely die out there,,,,,polar bears would turn me back, without a high powered rifle,,,,,
Thanks
excellent as always
Thanks
"Should I go, or should I stay"? For some reason, that statement made me pause the video and think for a bit. I decided it summed up a lot of situation's I have found myself in over the past 69 years on this ole earth. I have loved following this series. I spent a considerable amount of time on the north slope of the 1970's, compliments of oil exploration. The cold, the wind, your trip has taken me back to some great memories. I truly admire what you're doing, and watching Buck, a mix of emotion's there. You won't replace Buck. You shouldn't try. But, you will, in due time, find a companion of his qualities, and that will take a spot in your heart right along side him. Anyway, just a few thought's I have had as I watch your amazing journey and experience. Be safe man. From Colorado, Roger.
Thanks for those wise words, Roger. Must have been an experience up on the north slope. I’ve spent s little tome in Colorado. It’s an interesting place. It makes me think of the Walt Whitman poem “Pioneers” that part where it says “Colorado men are we” always gives me goosebumps. I like to think that to some extent, we carry some of that spirit.
Buck of the North!
Buck of the North!
Love ya Buck.
Beautiful. Peaceful. Thanks for sharing your journey so I can see it too. Buck was very strong & a handsome dog!
You’re welcome and yes, he was awesome looking
I am absolutely enthralled watching! And I honestly don't understand how you DO NOT have at least 10K watching, 12 hours after posting! What an epic adventure, Jim! Thanks for this! All the best to your wife and blessings on the new little bitty Baird (soon to come or arrived?). Love, love, love your sweet dog! What a good, good gift to you, from God! I'm thankful for the selfless friendship these lovely creatures bring us.
Thanks so much for the great comment and it’s great to best you’re really enjoying the videos too! Our son’s name is Wesley and he’s 19months old now.
great stuff!
Thanks
Just absolutely gorgeous crazy insane and scary all in one. Enjoying this series immensely. Buck is just such a trooper.😘
Awesome, thanks for watching!
chill in the shelter and have a mini adventure with your saved time! :)
Just love your adventures Jim, thanks!!! 👍👍💯💯
You’re very welcome!
Deciding to stay in the shelter was gold. A few years back in Alaska I remember setting up my tent in 40 mph winds, good times.
Indeed, it can be a real challenge to get set up in that weather.
Thanks, I enjoyed traveling along with you and Buck..the closest I'll ever get to Baffin Island.
Just when i was wondering what to watch while i eat dinner .....Jims post pops up and saves the night ..
Thanks for posting mate this truly is an amazing series 👍👍👍✌️
You’re welcome! Thanks for tuning in
A good video with a lot of excitement I enjoyed it.
Thanks!!
Just love watching these, wonder how some people make camping videos in their backyard and get so many subscribers, this deserves a million subscribers for the effort alone.
Thanks a lot, it definitely took a lot of effort!
Grape Molases keeps very warm..
Love the video Jim. You always have those great videos of Buck as well. I'm sure you and the family sure miss him. Be safe out there Jim. Thanks for sharing.
CHEERS🍻🐾🐕🐾
Thanks, ya we miss him a lot.
YEEESSSS WAITED ALLL WEEK for this 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼🔥🔥🔥
I hope you liked it!
@@JimBairdAdventurer I sure did. Been looking for it the past few days. Thank you.
Great to heat man. I’m just finishing up ep 5 now
@@JimBairdAdventurer Thank you.
Every morning is the same...
JIM: "Come on Buck!"
BUCK: "You want me to do what!?
Not again! Oh, you have a treat?! Ok I'll pull your pulk one more day."
Lol....if only people were motivated that easily. Buck just loves treats. Especially liver bites which is actually what I had in that beef jerky bag
I watched this cast to my tv after 4 am this morning. Another great video!! I so enjoyed it.
Awesome, thanks so much!
You should do a collage of buck!A testimony to man’s-best friend!! Greetings from Spain!Sorry about your loss of Buck!He is and you are my heroes!
All good buck!,
Hey,Jim!
You bring me to places,I would never see in my live without you! Thank you for that!
And especially for that,I had not to freeze my own arse to see that! ;-D
Stay save!
You are so brave, and well prepared. Like the game Oregon trail I just know I'd have too much ammunition and not enough provisions to sit that out. Lol. Great video!
Yes! First game I ever played on those old floppy disks haha. Thanks and thanks for watching too 🙂👍
Yup! Buck has you well trained...
Haha, yup....he knows I’m going to have to go back for the camera. That’s why he doesn’t go in the morning without a treat. Because he knows it’s not out of necessity so he thinks it’s a trick which he gets treats for like paw and sit. Same thing on hot days when we do a portage. He doesn’t walk back with us for the second trick.
Awesome adventure Jim. Can't hardly wait for the next installment. Rick.
Thanks a lot Rick, I just finished editing it actually. I think you’ll like it.
Good thing you stayed back in that nice little cabin & keep you & Buck warm for awhile. I just told my friend to watch your videos.
Awesome, thanks a lot! Those shelters could be a lot warmer! I’m lucky I brought that stove.
Yet another awesome adventure for Buck and yourself, he was such a amazing dog, wonderful capture of the mountains that surrounded the two of you, Just beautiful. I have that same machete and love it ., so glad you and Buck returned to the safety of the shelter with that wind storm, better to be safe Eh than freeze to death. Bet Torrie was on edge while you were out on this adventure, loving the video's Jim .
Thank you! ya I think she was nervous and mostly just when I initially left, same with me. So glad to hear you’re enjoying the videos
I bet that was one damn great cup of cocoa you had there.
I had to go get a blanket watching this crispy adventure your on! Got my fingertips cold!
Wise move to hang back Bro... Good thing for that shelter huh? The epicness continues!!
Another awesome video Jim, glad to see you make use of the shelter :) so cool to see Buck of the north musseling the big slay around. Wishing you all well :) 👍
Thanks a lot “Buck of the North” haha aww. What a good boy!
And I thought my solo camping trip was rough! Yikes! Stay warm and safe my friend!
Will do, thanks
This series is superb I ha e flown over baffin never bin on it though fine fine vid well Don always look forward to them (northern ont.
This is a wonderful series, one you can look back on with due pride.
What did you do to entertain yourself in the shelter for all of those hours?
The SD is possibly for Speyside Distillery an area of Scotland with the 5 being the year of bottling. The JG maybe for JG Grant whiskey which is in Glenfarclas, Speyside. The Liquor part indicates it's for the US or Canadian market.
Great series this far... plastic bags is a time honoured tradition for winter camping in Canada.
Great video today Jim love going on the adventure with you and Buck thank you for sharing brother and yes looks very cold lol
Thanks m, ya it got pretty cold a few times for sure and then with the wind too it can make things interesting.
I stumbled across your channel as I love survival challenge videos and I've got to say, I'm loving this series so far and I'm looking forward to looking at your other videos 🤙✌👊
Nice, thanks a lot for checking it out. Things do get even more interesting in this video series with some intense blizzards. Glad you’re enjoying the videos and I do have some other big adventure videos I think you’ll like.
Man that was real world SUCK! That wind was howling!!! Great call on not pushing forward. Live to adventure another day is my motto...
I think you should read John Muir's adventures. He didn't do what you're doing but he has much to impart. It is amazing where Muir went, Alaska. He had limited equipment or no equipment. It's my "Bible", not that I could do what Muir did, but it does provide perspective and a comforting link with the past.
Great idea, I have read John Muir’s adventures in the Stikine and really enjoyed it and my dad told me stories about him. He was definitely ahead of his time when it came to conversation. I have a ton of respect for him and some of the things he said.
Thank you for the harness info
No problem
Well that got abit intense. Man I'm loving this series 👍
It did! Thanks a lot
Soooo good! Frig I would pay to watch this series!
Thanks!!
Damn, that was some viscious blizzard. So glad you had the emergency shelter to stay in. I am feeling so bad for Buck.... hard to watch him. :-( Fresh water looked good.
Thanks, ya it was pretty interesting. Thanks for watching. I still cry just reading the odd comment about Buck. I think I’ve moved on and then all of a sudden I’m all distraught and sad again. It just feels empty here now around my house. But I get these feelings that his spirit is around here once in a while. So, I’m still grieving and sanctifying the part of you that’s lost is part of that process for sure. Thanks a lot for watching and for your nice comment.
Here in Arviat we have those winds like that more than most. Been caught in it myself...life is put on hold when that happens and its safety first...completely accurate Jim. Enjoy the honest reflections you have. Keeps getting better.
Ya, I could imagine they do. I’ve never been there but it’s cool that you’re from there! Strong winds seem to be pretty common in the Arctic and Akshayuk Pass can act as a wind tunnel too and can get winds up to 170kmph. I hope to make it to Arviat one of these days. Do you get a big Baluga congregation in there mating season around there?
@@JimBairdAdventurer Yes.I cant harvest myself as a whitey but I have participated in it. Amazing to see.
Right. That would be something to see them all though. If I make it up there I’ll look you up.
Hey an old bottle bottom from a bottle of Scotch, as I sit on my couch, drinking a bottle of Scotch, just outside Glasgow, in Scotchland, sorry Scotland, it must be the Scotch. Another oustanding travelogue from the far north, well done Sir.
Awesome info, thanks a lot. I imagine that means it not that old if it was made for sale America. Explorers searching for the NWP likely sailed from England and wouldn’t have stopped to buy booze in the states first. It still looked like it’d been around for some time though.
Great adventure with the great companion♥
Another great episode. You were so lucky the shed appeared around the same time as the weather but i think you knew that already. :)
Yes, Buck (had) you well trained! You must miss that guy. So scared for him with bears, though. Dogs would be pretty hard to control. You should buy three or four Turkish Kangals to go out there in bear territory :)
I was sitting here watching you and Buck in that windy situation and the wind is really kicking here today. But it's a lot warmer then you had it. Smart move to stay in that shelter. I know I'm not going outside!
Ya, it was pretty warm too or I wouldn’t have attempted traveling at all but still, it was not the best idea. Turning back was smart.
PS love the dog
Let me get my blanked before start watching
Lol
Get baked
@@CANControlGRAFFITI yeah thanks to jim and his partner! They suffer to provide most amaizing videos of north!
Such incredible scenery. I’d love to go to Baffin!!!
Some awesome climbing there I’m sure you know!
✌👍
Not remembering your book and being stuck in that tiny shelter would drive me crazy! Sorry the weather didn't stay beautiful for the while trip, but it's better to be safe rather than sorry. 👍🍻
Indeed, it felt like I was there forever. Here is a story from 1930s Labrador as told to me by Joe Goudie. I thought you might like it. theadventurer.ca/labrador-tale-wooden-boats-iron-men/
@@JimBairdAdventurer wow what an hero. what a time to be alive and suffer. those were really iron mens, not like today where everyone live in a confort-like nursery.
My father was born in 1930 in a very poor dirt road in rural beauce, quebec, with no electricity and 12 siblings, if they didnt hunted or fished, they ate what they could grow. he had his last child (me) at 59yr old. i still remember him spliting wood at 80 for hours on end, while i was about 20yr old i couldnt last for half an hour. i've always knew i was a sissy compared to a real man.
I love watching your videos because its showing one of the last men in north america. congrats on the trips and the balls.
