Sleeping Under a Tree - Primitive Survival Shelter and Campfire Cooking with Joe Robinet

Sleeping under a tree was the idea we had in mind when Joe Robinet and I headed into the bush by snowshoe. We planned to convert a spruce tree into a survival shelter and then cook up some steaks over the fire. (Check out the link to Joe's channel below). Trekking through deep snow, we passed Joe's "fort", a sturdy survival that he's put out some great videos on. Continuing on a ways, we eventually came up to a great spot to build the shelter we had in mind. We found a small clearing where the branches on surrounding trees grew down to the ground. We soon found four trees growing side by side. Two White Spruce and two Balsom Fir trees. The snow had pinned their lower branches down to the ground and we could see that with a little work, we could convert this naturally occurring structure into a good shelter. Tucking under the branches, Joe began cutting the bottom ones off of the tree trunks to create space. I started cutting evergreen boughs which we used for bedding and to pile up on top of the outer branches for more protection and to hold the snow we'd shovel ontop.
After putting in some time on the shelter, it was time to gather firewood and we were able to find some good hardwood. Joe lit a one-match fire and we started cooking up steaks. Joe cooked his on a grill while I tried to "out bushcraft" Joe by using a technique inspired by "geestabaun" a method used by indigenous Cree of Northern Ontario used to splay out and roast geese over the fire. It worked well with the steak and we both enjoyed a good meal after a long day of working in the bush.
The weather was seasonably nice and after a great sleep, we melted some drinking water in the morning before leaving camp for the trek out. In all, it was a great trip and a good example of how winter camping, and even practising winter survival skills can be very enjoyable if you have the right clothing, sleeping system and a little know-how.

In my book, Robinet & Baird are the Canadian Bushcraft Masters. I've learned a lot from both. A big THANK YOU to Joe and Jim.
Joe is so awesome thanks so much for the video!
Indeed and you’re welcome
Really enjoyed watching you and Joe, thankful to Joe for introducing you to me😁
Thanks a lot, ya me and Joe seem to work well together
When two of my favorite Canadian UA-camrs get together, its gotta be pretty good...y'all didn't disappoint. Now I have to go watch Joe's perspective.
And yes, "widow makers" are always the first thing that I look for when choosing my campsite.
Thanks!
Thank you very much, I laughed a lot when I saw the video. It's great to see both of you fooling around and having fun. Jim, you and Joe know exactly what to do so you can enjoy everything and try new or different old things without getting in trouble. I'm always happy to see new videos from the Baird brothers Jim and Ted and Joe Robinet🤩👍☘️💫
You’re very welcome and thanks for checking it out!
Nice to see Joe and Jim together.

I just watched Joe's video with this guy Jim in it and while I've never seen this guy before I instantly knew I wanted to follow along with what he's doing out there. Instant sub. I don't know Jim but I already like the guy. Looking forward to scanning through the vids and chilling out to 'em. Cheers.
Thanks a lot! Great to have ya here and I hope you enjoy the vids
Exact same. Seems like a cool guy.
Thanks man 👍
Yea Jim is fun and natural with no shit
Jim is the man! He rocks those TSC gloves. 👊
It´s insane you only have 23k subs. You deserve at least half a million. For now...
Keep up the great work producing great content for us!
Damn. I didnt notice the 23k. Stunned. Time to jump on that share button and shower my friend with this gift.
Ya I agree, Jim is under appreciated as he should have at 1 Million in subs. He well deserves it. Share, share!!
Steve Forsythe true!
Jim is the real deal....he has taken some epic canoe and trekiing trips. Check out some of his series, you won't be disappointed...and yeah, he should have a million subs...cool to see he and Joe finally get together. I look forward to more collaborations in the future.
I agree, some guys just have all the luck, and some don't get the subs for their awesome channel content. though deserve it more then some of those large channels out there. Though I think those large channels have mostly kids.
So much room for activities!
Hahaha!
I like your deliberate style. I don't see much wasted energy in the things you do. Idk, I can't describe it very well.
Thanks
"It's gonna take a little sprucing up" lol....I'm gonna save that gem just for the right occasion.
Plagiarism. 😮😁😁😁
Two of the best.
Thanks
Nice collab Jim, enjoyed it very much! Thanks

HOW COOL WAS THAT VIDEO!! WHO CARES ABOUT PARTICLES
IN THE WATER WHEN YOUR THIRSTY WE DRINK NATURE PROVIDES!!
GREAT VIDEO LEARNED A LOT!! AGAIN I WISH I WAS THERE
Big Jim. You're mention of being 49 yrs young was spot on. You and Joe were like a couple of teens outdoors just having fun in the moment. It really took me back to such a wonderful moment in time when I was .. young in spirit and ability..
Btw .. when are you guys going back to Shawn's to work on the longhouse,
I love 'Alone' and was pleasantly surprised to meet you and Ted on 'My self reliance'. Not just you guys but also Buck. Being such a fan of Cali and her personality I though Buck was a bit of a dud. But thanks to Shawn's channel I discovered your channel and I got to enjoy you and Bucks adventures. I learned that Buck was no dud. He was a mule. A hoss. A stud. A joy to get to know. Thanks for hauling my arse along for the ride. Keep up the good work!
he said 39.
RIP Buck SuperTrekker Extraordinaire...you will be missed by many.
Two legends right here! Awesome video! Bushman at work

👍
That was great fun! Great video, so cool to hear the casual banter between you guys. Nice work! So sorry to hear you lost Buck. We were a sad household for you. Be strong, and move on when you’re ready.
The duo I didn't know I needed 😎😎😎
Just watched Joe's video love being able to see 2 different versions of the same trip
Nice, thanks a lot. We trekked in a ways and then left our stuff behind to scout the bush in two different directions. I didn’t film that part and Joe did. In his version you ASO see a lot more of him removing those lower branches to create the shelter space which I like
I just found these two guys, I watched Jim first and then Joe. I thought man those guys need to do a video together. Next day I find this!
Ha! Awesome
Great chillax watch! You guys work well together. these vids get me through the work day!
It’s great to see my two favorite bush craft adventurers together! Great vid! Any plans for a canoe trip with each other? That would be ultimate! Thanks Jim!
None yet but ya, that’d be great
My two favorites 🇨🇦🇺🇸
I think Joe should have offered to drag the sled for the return journey.......lol.....another great trip guys, thanks

Lmfao @ 4004 ...Jim Has Antlers !!
Nice one Joe
Haha
I can just imagine Joe saying "okay Jim, you gonna be a good sled dog?" and Jim saying, "yeah but you got to give me some treats, thats how it works" (rip Buck). Great to see you guys getting out for a night together.
Haha
Good job guys ... if you like, before you leave home just wash a couple potatoes, brush some oil over the skin & wrap with foil (you can add salt & pepper) ... once your fire has some coals, put the potatoes in to cook ... make sure you bring a little butter to put in goes really good with your steak ... lol
Yum! Good way to go :) thanks and thanks for watching.
Nice collab, you mix well togheter. Enjoyed the vid, thx
You go little Joey
Nice watching two cool campers chillin together..and no spooning I'm sure, jk.yall stay safe!
Lol, thanks a lot
so many yaaa's and eyy's. had my head spinning, lol...
Haha, and I think it’s spelled eh - it sort of acts like a question mark but in a way that’s just requesting an acknowledgement, even with just a simple nod. In the US some places they say Huh which is the same thing or in some places in England they say “isn’t it”
Great short video Jim, thanks
👍
Brings back memories of boys making a club house. Great video
So cool to see you guys together ! I enjoy following you both ! Regards guys !
Thanks!!
very cool you two . i Say :) :)
Thanks!!
awesome stuff.
Much appreciated!
Great job with your video! I'm glad to have you on the UA-cam Creators Group that I started a little over a year ago. My channel is mostly for backpacking, but I do love bushcrafting. Bob
Thanks a lot! I have a couple vids out on my backpacking trek from Jasper to Grande Cache if you want to check them out. ua-cam.com/video/lBN1gL53USM/v-deo.html
Being that it’s video/work time, I peeped out this all time favorite... [I]t’s amazing how you fellas pick up nature’s own material and start building, not to ruin anything with your footprints but to camouflage yourselves while occupying such beautiful spaces.🌲🤙🏽🌲🌺🏕🌲ML&Aloha Your Boy Kekoa&Ohana 🌺.
How fun to see you two hooligans out together! Love the shelter! Love that super-light bivy. Cool Cree stick bbq. But I don't think Joe's steak looks big enough!! Hungry and jealous in Calgary. 😉👍🇨🇦💜
really sweet video guys, this was awesome to watch and great collab. Sweet way to cook that ribeye, I made a similar video a while ago about how to cook steak slow cooked like that amazing great work
Much appreciated!!
its goos to see you JIM in a different adventure
Thanks
@@JimBairdAdventurer WELCOME
Just watched Joe's video and now I'm here for your perspective ... loved your presence, can't wait to check out your stuff. You've earned yourself a new subscriber based on the 'sprucing it up' joke alone. heh
Take care! Hope to see you next week in Madison.
Thanks a lot, great to have ya
Great video guys!👍👍👍💯💯💯
Thanks a lot
nice video ,the two patners....
👍
Awesomeness ♥️💯
Careful walking with that manchette Jim makes me nervous just watching you. It is very nice watching you both together loved watching season 1 thru 7 :-) Great video!
😬 thanks for watching!
Little advice on pulk sled if ya put pvc pipe over rope and attach to carabiners you can then attach to pack or belt and it pulls like a dream .. also cross poles 👍🏻
I actually have that custom made for this pull but had the tops rigged up for a couple recent lake crossing trips. I sure missed them on this bush trek!! Wish I’d swapped them back out.
Jim Baird - Adventurer lol just saw your prior video nice set up love winter camping/ hunting 👊🏻👍🏻
i like Joe and seen everything but him fun Stuff Thank You And will be looking for more by you two :)
Cool! Joe is one of my Favorite Bush craft Guy! Ia'm also enjoying your stuff to Jim.

Great job on the shelter, and that steak cook was money! Thanks for sharing with us JB!
Thanks a lot, ya that streak cooking method worked out great for sure.
Today, all of our dreams come true
I like the Rashomon bushcraft videos between you and Joe.
Right on
Oh dude, I am so here for a collab. Subscribed real quick.
Cue binge watching previous videos.
You are such a great genuine guy. Watching the Arctic series now.
👍👍 Thanks for bringing me along on your journey.
Hey, awesome man, thanks for coming over, great to have ya and I hope you enjoy the vids!
Joe and Jim in the same video 😮 I remember him saying he was doing a cool thing with the alone cast that he couldn't talk about. Fumny how months later I stumble on it on a completely different UA-cam Chanel.
Ha, that’s pretty cool for sure. Slim odds I’d say. Hope you liked it!
@@JimBairdAdventurer I did besides the episodes with your wife and Wesley there my favorite.
Truly enjoyed watching this guys, really nice to see two of my favorite outdoors adventure people meeting up sharing experiences and sad jokes :D always thumps up from me :)
Thanks a lot! Glad you’re enjoying the vids
28:39 Jim looks like he is really enjoying attacking the wood! Lol, he's tearing it up and loving it!
Pine needle tea 😋
Joe: let's walk over that incline
Jim: hold onto my mountain while a take a look
Joe: I've got some spruce boughs
Jim: Sorry, I'm busy carrying a cord of wood on each shoulder
Joe: I don't have enough boughs
Jim: how many trees do you want me to pull down before I get my axe?
Joe: Oh, that's not how you thread a steak!
Joe: Oh, yes it is ...
Great piece guys, thanks.
Just found you from Joe's video. Good vids! I'll be watching your channel and have subscribed! 😁
Good to have ya here!
Didnt even know you guys done one together. That is the coolest chit ever.
A 'treezee' maybe haha? Great video as always Jim, and it was good to see you teaching old Joe a thing or 2 ;) Cheers buddy
That’s what I should have called it! Haha
Jim Baird - Adventurer Haha it’s all yours - I just started putting together a couple videos, and definitely owe some inspiration to you and Ted. Rooted for you guys on Alone! Send a line if you’re ever in New England 🍻
Awesome young fellas ya gotta love it 🇨🇦 70+ Hunter/ gatherer
👍
Joe sent me here.. jus sub
Nice, great to have ya
I had to laugh. You talked about jinxing trips by saying you wished for hardship, then a couple minutes later joe said " this is going to be so cool, man".....how many times have I heard others and myself say that just before we almost died! 😂😂😂. Can't believe you made it out alive.😃
Haha, thanks a lot
I use a US military issue bivy. It’s camo and Gortex, definitely not the lightest but well worth the weight penalty.
Also use a machete instead of an ax. So maybe the weight cancels out the bivy.
Cool collab, keep it up Jim!
EDIT: OMG that steak looks so juicy and great!
I used that US military bivy on my trek on Alone. It’s great. This one here is unreal light for sure but the military one is better for regular and heavy use. Thanks a lot for watching!
Keep the content coming man!
Will do man, thanks for the inspiration
