Or we could stretch our imagination and make MK films or shows with fantastic writing *and* gorey fights. MK has so much story potential in its characters and worlds that is dying to be explored. We don't have to settle for just fights.

Calling Kano's significantly better than average physique a "dad bod" really goes to show how the male celebrity body transformations for super hero movies have warped perspectives on what good physical condition is. To look like that, with the chiseled abs and bulging veins, they have to cut down to 10% or lower body fat and dehydrate themselves, and they only do that when they're on a project. Hugh Jackman did this in Les Miserables because he thought he needed to look like Wolverine to play a singing Frenchman and almost permanently damaged his voice. Rags is right, he looks like what an actually physically capable and healthy human male looks like. He has a layer of fat because we are *supposed* to have a layer of subcutaneous fat under our skin for warmth and protection. And he even has visible abs here for crying out loud.
It always funny to me when people realize that being a super cut muscular guy doesn't mean your super strong visible abs and muscles are weaker just look at competitive strong men
The weird thing about that comment was that no one corrected the claim when they saw the next shot of him, where his abs are clearly visible and significantly developed.
@@Nadie47 Sub-Zero has had a total of like 5 spines throughout the series, if you count Noob Saibot as being "Sub-Zero" and Kuai Liang's Cyberization into Cyber Sub-Zero.

I hadn't seen this dude before and I'm glad and will be avoiding him from now on. Holy fuck was that hard to listen too. Literally did the exact thing he's criticizing a character in a movie when that's his personality IRL. The first part of the video he talks very loudly over everyone. While they are in the middle of speaking to lay down a shitty joke about asian violence during the fight scene with Reptile and Liu Kang.
I think this might be a good example of the original and a reboot both having their strengths and weaknesses. If we can just get a movie with the campy tone of the first one, and the action of the second one, it might just be the perfect live action Mortal Kombat movie.
Personally I'd prefer something like an MK show with the writing quality of early GOT, with humorous bits sprinkled nun to balance out the seriousness, all leading up to the tournament.
@@jeggsonvohees2201 I haven't played Mortal Kombat, but I could see something like that. @@matthewmuir8884 Dude, MK has so much story potential, with 60+ characters, multiple worlds, 4 classes of undead, different clans, factions, the sky is the limit. All that's holding it back is the studio's lack of faith in the property and the fan's willingness to settle for mindless action. Most modern MK fans don't even know about the lore from MK 1-A, they just know the NRS Era stuff, which is terribly written.
@@jeggsonvohees2201 I see. Sounds like a ton of lore that would be better served in something that can introduce it more gradually like a TV series, which was my point. That's not to say you can't make a good film out of it; I'm sure you can. I'm just saying it would probably be easier to do a show, while something like Subnautica would be easier to adapt as a film than a show. I agree that lack of faith in the property does seem to be the main thing that holds a lot of these films and shows back. Pokémon: Detective Pikachu worked because the Pokémon Company is a multimedia company that already had experience navigating the film and TV industries and making sure the people working on the project actually had faith in the property. Similarly, Castlevania worked because the project had been in the making since 2007 and all Netflix had to do was pick it up.

My only comment is that the volume of the movies is a tiny bit too quiet, and there's not enough moments to hear what is being said. Then again, this is probably purely intentional, as efforts to avoid the Copyright Gestapo.
Interesting comparison, as both WW84 and Mortal Kombat 2021 were co-written by the same person: David Callaham. I checked his filmography, and the only good thing on his list is Ant-Man, for which he wrote a minor production rewrite. The first film that he was involved with was the 2005 Doom movie, for which he co-wrote the script, and he also co-wrote the Zombieland sequel that I didn't even know existed and will probably forget existed.
I think the fact that EFAP kept confusing whether Sub Zero, Smoke, or Noob Saibot was on screen speaks mountains about the poor design choice of making SZ's outfit so dark instead of a brighter blue.
It’s weird because that’s exactly what they did in MK2. Kuai Liang’s Sub Zero wore more of a cyan, while in the original MK Bi Han’s Sub Zero wore a darker blue.
I love how the trailer for the 2021 movie completely spoiled the outcome of most of the fights, and when the fans called the studio out on it they straight up lied and said that there were tons of fights we hadn't seen yet.
Raiden wasn't a bad guy in MK1, but taking part in the tournament and winning, he eventually allowed other gods to compete, resulting in the destruction of Earthrealm. Have a nice day.
I think the new movie could have had Johnny Cage _and_ Kano. If anything, that could have been a bit of an interesting contrast. For all the attitude similarities they have, they have very, _very_ different moral cores. But since the new movie had Kano initially on the side of the heroes...there's a lot you could work with there. You could have a genuine sense of comradery between Cage and Kano as, for example, the latter is downright _ecstatic_ to discover that the former is every bit the badass he portrays in his movies. Cage, meanwhile, is caught off-guard by this, while others (Sonya and Jax in particular, I imagine) still treat him with little respect as they consider him a self-interested gloryhound. Thing is, Kano _technically_ also considers him that, but he doesn't consider that a problem. Also, maybe Cage is pushed closer to Kano because Sonya/Jax insist on the reasons they hate Kano being kept on a 'need-to-know' basis, not trusting Cage with that level of information. Then, when Kano turns on the group, and perhaps also thinks that Cage will do so as well (though I can see him trying to soft-sell it), Cage can have a split from Kano that actually mirrors the modern MK story-to-fight format of sudden arguments leading to big fights, only for nobody to die at the end (in this case, because Cage badly injures Kano, presumably with some kind of torso hit followed by an eye-bursting punch that sends him out of their particular arena). And...eh, why not: something related to Hanzo Hasashi and the Shirai Ryu were in Cage's latest film. Or- -OH. WAIT. That's our transitional hook! We shift from the opening fight to a Hollywood version, with Cage as some big name Western actor spliced into an otherwise exclusively Asian film with some basis in myth/folklore. Then something something something, and maybe a 'protester' of his inclusion presses a dragon-emblazoned coin into Cage's hand, insisting that there's more to the story of the Shirai Ryu and the Lin Kuei and that Cage has involved himself not so much by his high profile, but by virtue of his hard-won skills as a martial artist. Point is, you could do a lot of things with this that don't involve Cole Slaw as the protagonist.
1:28:45 No, Rags, that is a *very* fatal place to be stabbed. Directly under the collarbone is the subclavian artery and vein, which are *MASSIVE* blood vessels. You'd be lucky to last 30 seconds after getting stabbed like that. You could have a team of trauma surgeons standing right there and I doubt they could save you.
I watched the 2021 MK twice then went back and rewatched 1995. I was way more entertained with the old one than this new one. Kano having a personality was one of the few saving graces. Bar the two Bi-Han/Hanzo Hasashi battles and Kung Lao's buzzsaw, the fights were ehhh.
Even with the new additions to Scorp/Zero in the 2021 film, their characters are still so paper thin that I don't really care about them. Those two really need solo movies dedicated to fleshing them out.
I’m with chase. Being comic relief is not a personality I’m afraid. I found him dull in both versions. I think the new one struggles with pacing, a cohesive narrative, and tonal dissonance.
Which is ironic considering the 1995 movie was directed by Paul W Anderson. Guess he has not met Mila "I have no boobs" Jojovich or she would have played Sonya and would have been a Mary Sue.
Before the movie came out I was like "it's gonna be shit". And all the other people were all hyped up like "dude are you serious? It's gonna be the best film you've ever seen". Can't wait to see this video to see how incredibly well the movie has done. Grabbing my popcorn and beer
When I saw the trailer for the Mortal Kombat movie, I was like, "Okay; this is the second video game movie since Detective Pikachu (which is generally considered to be the first video game film that's "not bad" as there's genuine effort and all that), with the first being that obvious-garbage 'Monster Hunter' film. Let's take a quick look and see who is making it." I then looked at the list on Wikipedia: *Director: Simon McQuoid -* Never heard of him, and he didn't even have a Wikipedia article until after the movie released. *Screenplay: Greg Russo -* Never heard of him, and he still doesn't have a Wikipedia article even after the movie has released. *David Callaham -* The only good film he was a part of is the first Ant-Man film. He co-wrote the 2005 _Doom_ movie, the Zombieland sequel, and Wonder-Woman 1984. *Story by: Oren Uziel -* Never heard of him, and no article. *Greg Russo* again. So, a bunch of no-names and one guy who mostly co-wrote a bunch of garbage. I immediately predicted that it was going to be terrible.
@@benjamingrant5970 Oh, yeah; I forgot it existed. I haven't seen it, so I can't say if it's good or bad. Considering they only made it because the license was about to expire, I'd say I had good reason for suspecting it would be bad.

In a movie about a fighting tournament, the one from the early days somehow managed to HAVE a tournament instead of a plot about someone who's presence is so miniscule the audience believes he'll become a different character before the finale just to GIVE that character a personality.
2:12:40 "Elder gods are forbidden from engaging in one realms war against another." _Raiden teleports all of the heroes out before Shang Tsung can devour their souls._ Seems legit.
I feel like the best Mortal Kombat movie someone can make is just to lean heavily into the tournament aspect. Have a very blood tournament where lots of the characters die. That is then follow up by them getting revived at the end, so you can use them again. You can even have the characters that die, comment about how they died and praise the person that killed them or vow to win the next time they fight. And donno if you're new to MK because mileena's race is important. Especially when the devs are trying to replace Jade Kitana Mileena her with Jade Kitana Skarlet. Mileena's race is important because Mileena is black that means the Tarkatans are black and if the Tarkatans are black that means Baraka is black If Baraka is black that means Shao kahn will be the oppressor of Baraka's tarkaten race, not their emporer. Meaning the next movie is just going to preach bs. It boggles the mind that studio execs still think all of these cookie cutter scripts would make a more popular movie, than if they just had 2 hours of gorey combat and Kano lines.
Or we could stretch our imagination and make MK films or shows with fantastic writing *and* gorey fights.
MK has so much story potential in its characters and worlds that is dying to be explored.
We don't have to settle for just fights.

also they’re mostly out of touch.
@@jeggsonvohees2201 and honestly the original mk trilogy opens up so much story wise that you can play with. None of this magic shit making metal arms. The point was there was magic and chi abilities and the people who had neither leaned on tech to be able to match these characters

But that's ALSO not what we want. What we want is good writing. Saay what you will about Warcraft it actually had a proper plot and memorable characters.
It always funny to me when people realize that being a super cut muscular guy doesn't mean your super strong visible abs and muscles are weaker just look at competitive strong men
And not only but the Kano physique just looks better to me.
The weird thing about that comment was that no one corrected the claim when they saw the next shot of him, where his abs are clearly visible and significantly developed.

Some video games would be better adapted as films, while others would be better adapted as shows, and I suspect that something like Mortal Kombat is probably the latter.

I think the fact that EFAP kept confusing whether Sub Zero, Smoke, or Noob Saibot was on screen speaks mountains about the poor design choice of making SZ's outfit so dark instead of a brighter blue.

Or-
-OH.
Point is, you could do a lot of things with this that don't involve Cole Slaw as the protagonist.
...so Kano wasn't originally Australian, it was because of the original MK movie he became Australian

Don't take me wrong, this movie is underdeveloped and weak, but I was clearly talking about the action (of which you said nothing by the way) when I said it would resonate with fans of the franchise. On the lore side, I can recognize a lot of your takes, I don't really care for some of them like the race of characters or how the plot either buffed or nerfed them, or if mine or your personally preferable version of a character wasn't picked to portray them on the movie. Not talking about Reiko, Raiden, or how much of an insider Kabal usually is.
At any point, I did enjoy watching parts of this movie while others felt either really blunt or simply forced, like the main character's literal plot armor. I can't go into massive details cause it has been... over a month since the last time I watched this movie, but, I still believe there is enjoyment to be gain from Mortal Kombat 2021 meh edition. :)
@@entropias_gonos No, I was replying to your point of hardcore fans enjoying this movie. No, we didn't. For example this is something only us hardcore MK fans noticed which you plebs didn't - There was no actual mortal kombat tournament in the first mortal kombat movie.
its like they fought in the locker room and called it a day.
This is all because of that God awful webseries called MK Legacy with evil liu kang with dead gf who works for shang tsung (No, it gets worse), monk kung lao with Liu kang's and Raiden's personality, a lobotomized raiden, a Mad black surgeon Baraka, none sf generic cops sonya, stryker and jax, a psycho johnny, a in-hiding jerrod (kitana's OG father), badly developed kenshi, ermac and reptile and sindel dies and her soul goes in Kitana for some reason. Its where the whole Scorpion family death came from. And now every MK movie is about scorpion's family dying for the millionth time. And this nightmare is the gold standard for making MK movies.
Also, I thought the action was generic hollywood choreography, I was hoping for some real Wushu based action but whatever. The movies only positive was ok graphics and Kano.
Lil' Mac is actually Ermac because him being in the movie was an error
Everyone talking about how Cole felt like a self insert when the sad thing is he WAS a self insert.
The director made the character because his wife was pregnant at the time and he wanted a fatherly character.
It genuinely burns me inside to think about.
Technically it's said that he did it because it was studio mandate
You gotta get that Asian market right?
Regular EFAPer but the level of tism in this episode has legit brought me an excess of joy.
They think the Kano/Liu Kang fight was lame, but they don't put it together that, in the old games, you could defeat an opponent easily and annoyingly by doing the leg sweep over and over again. Twas an homage.
Still lame
I remember seeing the original in theatres. The film broke, and they drew the curtains right at the first “Your soul is mine!!”, and it was the best timing EVER. 😃
