Say what you will about Larry Kasanoff, it is commendable that he saw this series and immediately was very interested in doing something with it. The first movie IS still well regarded and was a success. He did NOT stick the landing AT ALL, but he was clearly on to something.
When you read that lawsuit, my jaw just about dropped into my lap. Holy mother of Raiden, the brass balls on that Kasanof guy to claim essentially the entirety of the Mortal Kombat universe wouldn't have been what it was without his shitbag movie.
It's so fucking bullshit, but when you think about it... he is kinda right in some ways. Midway did change a number of characters based on what the first movie did with them and gave them more defining personalities that weren't really expanded on in the games at that point, one of the most notable being Kano. It's still happening to this very day with the newest Mortal Kombat game using the first MK Movie design for Shang Tsung and it's honestly one of the best designs for him ever in my opinion at least. So while I think this lawsuit would have failed spectacularly and the idea behind it in the first place is pure bullshit, it does have *some* legs to stand on at least but not enough to steal the whole franchise from the owners.
@@rikowolfin4984 It'd be a little bit like Tim Burton claiming he was the real creator of Batman because he was the guy who invented Batman having a grapple gun or Gotham City looking all spooky. Sure, he contributed, and a lot of his ideas made it back into the original medium, but that's not the same thing as inventing something.
Another big hurt was how many really talented martial artists were involved in the first movie. From Francois Petit, Chris Cassamassa, Kieth Cooke, Hakim Alston, and more. The movie was studded with people who at least knew how to fight/move.
I do like them but I wouldn't say they're my favorites, just pointing out that they go on about fanservice being the point of stuffing so many characters in the movie when nobody was like "hey maybe smoke's not the guy who shoots missiles"
Because he never did in the games? The games seem to make a point of every cyborg having their own thing going on, even MK9(Maybe one of the PS1-PS2 games before it, but my memory of those is fuzzy at best) basically established the (named) cyborgs abilities are an extension of what they were like before being cyberized(When Sub-Zero is cyberized instead of Smoke, he has ice themed abilities for example). I know that wasn't well established back when Annihilation came out, but this scene coulda had Sektor and barely been changed. Hell the scene coulda not even been in the movie and nothing would've changed, but still.
When Black Lightning first started airing and I noticed James Remar was playing the hero's gadget dude, I almost yelled "Oh shit, that's Raiden! I mean, the second Raiden!" I'm happy at least someone from the film continued to get work after it.

@@DarkMProductions Final Fantasy does have the potential to take the crown from MK as one of the greatest video game movies ever made, and IM not talking about Spirits Within, or advent children or whatever. I'd also put the mud fight between her and Mileena on the list of positives, but really, the entire movie is so awful, it's awesome. The fact that New Line apparently rushed it out before it was finished makes it even more hilarious.
The mud fight was great; two hot martial artists chicks going at it...yum... But yeah. The movie is crap, though me and the guys managed to enjoy it (with a bottle of high proof wine and some very well-written rules).

To be fair, Larry claiming he made serious changes and expanded the Mortal Kombat universe isn't exactly wrong. Particularly with regards to Kano, whose movie incarnation was so popular that the games rewrote the entire character to match.
@@shawnfields2369 You are right in everything you have said.... but perhaps Darth Vader with a red beam katana could be how Star Wars stays relevant. Hehehe.

I will admit, as a prank, I sometimes ask my friends if they want to come over and play Mortal Kombat, but I switch out the game for my DVD copy of Annihilation (I got both movies in the same collection)
They changed the timeline to fit DMC5 and they placed DMC2 before DMC4 when the first few trailers for DMC5 came out, as now the timeline is like this: DMC3, DMC1, DMC2, DMC4 and DMC5. But that also leads to a point where did Lucia go after DMC2 since she was never again mentioned in DMC4 and DMC5? Also the way that they portray Dante it seemed that this was during his "emo" phase after DMC1 where when Vergil (who was possessed by Mundus) "died" making Dante probably depressed as well as his iconic name change "Devils never cry" due to him saying Devils don't have the heart to cry like humans. Though at the end of DMC2 Dante cheered up and stayed in hell as a vacation and came out of it and hung out in the Devil May Cry shop and sobered up but also had his serious side that he shown in DMC4.
Now that you mentioned it, Food Fight would make a pretty spicy What Happened in my opinion, especially considering a lot of the extremely weird shit that went on behind the scenes, including someone who stole a copy of the film and the fact that Larry said he apparently wanted to make the "Citizen Kane" of animation with this.
Nice video, very informative, now I feel worse knowing Ashby (Cage) actually wanted to come back and the reason he didn't have a prominent role in the sequel was money issues, when they had a much a larger budget than the first one. Makes you feel great. What a colossal screw up this was.
Outta curiosity I looked Sub Zero's actor up (his name is Keith Cooke) and no, he wasn't a part of John Wick. However, the guy who played the top henchman is called Daniel Bernhardt and amusingly he also starred in MK: Conquest as a character called Siro. They kinda look alike.
I just watched both back to back for the first time, while I wasn’t that big a fan of the first one my appreciation for it grew immensely once the sequel was about 5 mins in.
That ending was like being told you've won the lottery, then heading to the door with your money before you see 4 guys in ski masks and machine guns walk in.
Larry Kasanoff: I foresee Mortal Kombat as a multimedia sensation, with movies, tv shows, stage shows, a music album, and more! I want to make this happen and have complete creative control! Also Larry Kasanoff: The second movie failed because MK4 was rushing the sequel into production, while the TV series and other media were demanding that the movie come out quickly. It was all way too much, and it was really just down to business and money. Well, if the next Mortal Kombat movie doesn't work out, I'm sure Larry could get a job with Gamefreak.
Really?! This is awesome, 'cause I thought they would only cast characters from MK1! I love Kitana and Mileena! The female ninjas bought for badass and sensuality to the game, and I think Jax is pivotal to Sonya's background since he's her superior to the their Special Forces program.
My little brother and I were HUGE Mortal Kombat fans, we had all the games, action figures, comic books, and even scorpion and sub zero outfits. We loved the first movie, then... We watched annihilation, throughout it, we kept asking each other "this isn't very good is it?" The end was the nail in our coffin, we both watched in horror, as Liu kang and shao kahns terminally ill cousin turned into cgi monsters. We ejected the movie from the vcr, put it back in its box, and put it in the closet, I believe its still there to this day.
I actually loved this movie growing up. I watched it more than the first. Now as an adult, I can say I love the first one much more. But, still love Annihilation.
Linden Ashby went on to star in Melrose Place not soon after not being in the sequel, which if anyone had an mom or older sister in the 90's would remember was kinda a big thing.
Watching this after three years of it coming out...and maybe I'm insane here, but...this is actually one of my favorite childhood movies! Like, I knew the cgi and acting in this kind of movie was bad? It's like...hmm...one of the best movies to watch on a bad movie night, you know? I loved it!! 👏🏽🔥
This just continues to confirm the fact that no matter what huge disaster you had under your belt, you'll eventually fail upwards. (Because I did so many MK videos, I've seen this movie more time than I care to say.)

NRS is even honoring the legacy of the movies (or at least the first one) even now with Cary Tagawa reprising his role as Shang Tsung in MK11, Chris Lambert referencing him playing Raiden in a recent French ad for MK11 and even Kano still being from Australia in the games up til now.

But the problem is that Disney and their Test Audience looked at Thinner Mickey and shut down the whole idea of that. SO! The Thinner Mechanic has no purpose, because you don't see Mickey turning into an evil rat drawing.

Sadly,he didn’t consult with the elder gods
"everyone wants to see their favorite characters fight"
*mixes up Smoke and Sektor*
I think the answer to the next What Happened is in this episode, Wing Commander. A movie actually directed by the game's creator. What could go wrong?
@@alex_-yz9to true, but at least The Spirits Within was a decent film, despite having next to nothing to do with the games. Wing Commander, on the other hand, is awful in nearly every way.
A movie that has nothing to do with the games...which have nothing to do with each other...hmm....
@@DarkMProductions Final Fantasy does have the potential to take the crown from MK as one of the greatest video game movies ever made, and IM not talking about Spirits Within, or advent children or whatever. Im talking about the fact that every FF title is a self contained story with different references and homages to itself. Thats perfect for a film. Because that gives the writers and directors way more creative freedom to tell any story they want, and all they really have to do is add chocobos, and magic, and maybe name a side character or two after someone.

To be fair, Larry claiming he made serious changes and expanded the Mortal Kombat universe isn't exactly wrong. Particularly with regards to Kano, whose movie incarnation was so popular that the games rewrote the entire character to match.

I'd love to see Wha Happun? Devil May Cry 2
I'd love for someone to go back in time and make it not happen at all.
Mortal Kombat dilation The plot is basically just kombat time, kombat time
Nice video, very informative, now I feel worse knowing Ashby (Cage) actually wanted to come back and the reason he didn't have a prominent role in the sequel was money issues, when they had a much a larger budget than the first one. Makes you feel great. What a colossal screw up this was.

Great timing! They just announced the casting for Jax, Mileena, and Raiden for the new movie.
Really?! This is awesome, 'cause I thought they would only cast characters from MK1! I love Kitana and Mileena! The female ninjas bought for badass and sensuality to the game, and I think Jax is pivotal to Sonya's background since he's her superior to the their Special Forces program.
