Wonder Woman: "Where I come from, generals don't hide, they fight on the front lines"
They've been hiding on amazon island for like thousands of years and not fighting any wars...

Also how terrible an idea that would be in WW1, and arguably even before that a rather risky move even before that, seeing as such 'bravery' of war leaders has led to them dying unceremonious deaths and having disastrous consequences for their respective nations. Not's saying that's the only way it turned out but I'm merely pointing for however 'brave' one might see a frontline general, they carry a very strict downside.

    • @CruelestChris
      @CruelestChris 4 роки тому +81

Yeah, what the hell use is a general on the front lines where he can't see what the overall situation is? There's only a handful of people like Alexander who ever made that kind of thing work, and that was in a period where everyone was using enormous pike formations which could only really move forwards and so a general leading the cavalry was workable. Only other cases were barbarian armies where the "general" was just the guy who decided when to shout "charge!"

@@CruelestChrisA general fighting with the men is a good morale boost and the general will be surrounded by the strongest men in the army as bodyguards so even if he's fighting personally, he's still in a safer position than every other soldier. Battles weren't about killing the most men, it was about making the other side run away, that's where most casualties happen. If your leader is out there fighting himself, then why shouldn't you? And if you abandon your leader, then you are leaving him to die, and if he dies then your brothers will lose heart and also die, so you need to keep fighting to keep him alive. That's the general mentality.
Knowing the general situation in the middle of a battle will only be useful if the general's plan isn't working and his commanders aren't doing a good job adapting and compensating. Generals didn't just make up what they were gonna do on the battlefield on a fly. They'll plan out what they're gonna do and let their commanders do their part, that's why they say that battles are decided before they are fought. They already know what they're gonna do before the battle starts, the commanders can take care of any problems themselves; the general can't be everywhere and make every decision. It's not like the general is gonna be doing much while the battle is ongoing anyway, and directing troops during a battle is only something that professional armies can do, and even then it's hard. The common soldier can only hear around two people away from himself, especially with a helmet covering his ears. Once you've committed a block of men that's pretty much them for the rest of the battle. This is why planning what you're gonna do before a battle is so important; nigh impossible to adapt mid-battle.
And if you're a warrior king, which many generals were, then you've trained to entire life to fight, just as your father has, then, of course, you're gonna lead your men. It's expected of you and it'd be embarrassing if you didn't. Less respect is a danger to your rule and command. More respect inspires loyalty. Alexander wasn't one of the few, it was pretty common before the age of guns to lead your army personally, that's how it's been for thousands of years, only in the last few hundred has this changed. There are expectations, mostly if you're not physically fit to fight because of a disability or old age or something. Ultimately, you're a raised warrior that's trained your entire life with the best equipment, surrounded by your bodyguards who are the best warriors that you've hand-picked; of the entire army, the force you're leading would destroy most of who you're facing. And without radios and professional armies, manoeuvring mid-battle isn't really gonna happen.
Even if you sit back and watch so that you don't die, if you lose then there's a good chance you're going to get captured by the enemy army anyway and then you're at their mercy. Even if you escape it's gonna be hard to raise another army that is capable of defending your country. Just going to war is putting the country and your soldiers at risk.
But yeah, in WW1 it's pretty stupid to go on the front lines.

      @@liamjm9278
Naw, usually generals in civilised armies would take a position back from the fighting so they could see the overall battle and pass orders forward, it was only the simplest battleplans which allowed the leader to be at the front. You're talking about blocks of men, but usually the general's primary goal was seeing when to commit an arm of decision like cavalry or reserves to swing the battle. And you can talk about the morale boost, but there's an equal chance that leader would be killed and rout the army, and in addition putting his best men as his bodyguards meant they weren't being employed as effectively as they would be if they weren't trying to protect him.

    • @liamjm9278
      @liamjm9278 4 роки тому +23

@@CruelestChris All battle plans are simple until the modern age. Hannibals plan at Cannae was to have the center give ground whilst the flanks hold and for the cavalry to defeat the Roman cavalry before wheeling back. Touted as one of the most ingenious battles ever fought; flanking a numerically superior force in an open field. And it was only possible bacause Hannibal lead the center himself, preventing the center from breaking into a rout. Some orders were as simple as telling your cavalry commander to go around a hill or hide in the forest and try to flank the enemy when the opportunity comes.
Equal chance? Do you know how hard it is to kill a person in armour surrounded by bodyguards. This isn't Hollywood where everyone is constantly dying. Battles were more pushing matches than constant dueling. People didn't want to die either so they'd be fighting cautiously, they're trying harder to stay alive more than kill recklessly.
As I said, casualties built up during the rout, not the actual battle.
What do you mean that they're not being employed effectively? They're fighting hard to protect their leader. They wouldn't be fighting as hard if he weren't there. The men in general are fighting with more energy because of his presence. And the army that fights harder will be more likely to scare the opposition into a rout. Push them hard enough and their formation will break up. An army being pushed back is likely to run away.
The cavalry wings will have their own commanders who can decide how and when to use them. A veteran cavalry officer is gonna know more about how to use cavalry than most generals whose job is to focus on strategy and logistics. Napoleon didn't tell Marshall Ney how to command his cavalry, he just gave him guidelines on what his goal was and let him do the rest. Armies with a deep structure of power and chain of command are more successful than one lead by an obsessive micromanager. It is often the autonomy and initiative of these individual commanders that decide battles. At Alesia, it was Mark Anthony who lead a group of soldiers to reinforce a part of the defence that was collapsing. Caesar was too busy leading his men in another part of the battle to order that. Caesar would've lost if it weren't for that, and if Caesar wasn't leading his men, then he would've also lost because the Gauls would've broken through and overwelmed him. Are those men uncivilised? Even Napoleon sometimes walked near the front lines to cheer up his troops.

To be fair, you can have a lot of things that were never the things you wanted to have.
It could actually be a very good thing to try and set a story around, someone who desperately wants one thing they can’t get, and maybe even have renounced pursuing it, that are reminded of this failure by the fact that they are otherwise very successful.
Like, wether you want to make a fictional biopic about some kind of businessman, or some sort of tragedy about a more fantasy or SF character, it can be a very solid foundation for a character I’d say.
Heck, to try and maybe force the trait : Anakin in the prequels. Pretty much the only thing he really wants is the power to save those he love (and not destroy those he hates XD), and in pursuit of that objective he accumulates glory, skills, friends, etc, but although pleasing to him, none of those are actually what he strives for ultimately, so when he loses his mother and risks losing padme he goes bonker because that’s the one thing he can’t afford to not be successful at.
And sure, he is frustrated by other things and has other objectives, it’s just that many of them are either unimportant to him compared to his overarching goal, or in service of this goal, until he gets corrupted and his goal along with it.
Point being : I don’t think WW84 did it right, but I can easily imagine a very successful person, beautiful, loved, all you want, that’s miserable and thus would make that kind of plea because they have been earnestly desiring just one thing that always eluded them, and are increasingly dissatisfied by the fact that the other positives of their lives are not enough to compensate for that lack.

No Man's Land means no one controls it. Not no man can cross it. It was not a WW1 invention.
Also by this stage of the war the actual front lines were thinly held. Stacking your front front line with troops simply meant there were more people to kill with artillery. The 'front' line hence evolved into outpost type positions and the bulk of the troops were held about 1000m further back where they had better protection from shelling and where they could react to enemy attacks. Then you usually had a second and third defensive line so that the entire 'trench' line was actually a zone about 5 or more kilometers deep. By this stage the Germans were also starting to fortify the villages behind the immediate front line to turn them into tank proof fortresses with barricades and light artillery.
Also machine guns work better when positioned for flanking fire.
Also also the standard method of defence was to send up SOS flares when attacked and have your supporting artillery shred the area in front of you. Battle plans for attack involved significant counter battery fire to suppress or destroy the enemy artillery - ironically considering the plot points of this movie, the usual weapon to suppress artillery was gas shells... BRITISH gas shells... - because if you don't reduce the defensive artillery fire your troops get pounded. Machine guns suppress them and force them into cover and then artillery pounds them until they move.
Anyway, the point is that on the Western Front the defensive zone was very deep. You didn't just run up and take the trench immediately in front of you and them go frolic in the green fields beyond, because those green fields were still several miles away. There was the first line of trenches that would have been 200-500m of trench system, then the same again but maybe with less barbed wire 2km back and then a third line beyond that. All of this would have been within range of the defending field artillery. However by the time you got past the second defensive line as the attacker your own supporting artillery is now struggling for range and the infantry are on their own. This is why the 'breakthrough' in WW1 in the West was so hard to obtain to the extent that by 1917 the British were using Bite and Hold methods instead where they advanced to the limit of their artillery and then stopped.

I hate that Hollywood now is so dumbed down. No nuance. War bad. That's it. This, from a movie that has Steve, a soldier, say out loud, "Its not that simple." So its not just nuance, its self awareness that's lacking too, on the part of the filmmakers.

The New 52 reboot era back in 2011 saw the amazons be similar to their mythological counterparts, where they have to go out and procreate with men; they then keep the girls and the boys are given to the god Hephaestus. Diana in that continuity was the demigod child of Zeus and Hippolyta.

It's really become a pet peeve of mine when movies don't gauge how attractive the actors are compared to the character they're supposed to be portraying. It creates this infuriating dissonance that gets even worse when it seems like the movie is blatantly ignoring the elephant in the room.
There's no way in hell extra clean skin, perfect teeth, fit and pretty blonde Kristen Wiig would be seen as this unnattractive dork just because she's clumsy, wears glasses and has kinda messy hair. If anything she'd come across as more accessible and would be complaining from too much unrequited attention, compared to Gal Gadot, who'd probably intimidate a lot of men out of even approaching her.
Reminds me of Snow White and the Huntsman, where the movie actually tells us with a straight face that Kristen Stewart is supposed to be categorically more attractive than Charlize Theron. CHARLIZE FUCKING THERON.
Movies being a visual medium and all, I don't know why a lot of filmmakers refuse to take that seriously, especially when the character's attractiveness is relevant to the plot or their characterization. Cast attractive actors all you want, but you better get that makeup team working.

@@michaelkemel9711 Yes. That seems to be the idea since Steve is in the body of some guy, but the movie is inconsistent with the illusion/truth element of the wishes. Does Cheetah stop being a super powered furry? Because that means renouncing her wish even though her character is not in the mental state to do so. Did that lady that died actually die? I guess not. But then the ICBMs actually blew up; they didn't turn back into Redwood trees cosplaying as more ICBMs.
Which is why I say Persona 5 Royal was much better at executing this concept. Everyone did get what they wished for and it turned them into Lotus Eaters.

    WW84 is an unintentional comedy.
Film starts with her story, then we're shown her in action. Reporter: "Who is this woman?!" cue mysterious montage of photographs and mementos you might recognize to piece together the identity of "this woman". Montage ends with the watch audience remembers she got from the love of her life. She sits in a restaurant alone as a man walks past with a rose he hands his date. WW picks up the menu and focuses on it, looking sad. She sighs heavily. Waiter: "Are you waiting for someone?" "No. It's just me." she responds. She drinks wine so she can avoid any more conversation and looks at the menu to avoid eye contact. She sighs heavily a second time. She walks home alone. She refuses a taxi ride with a guy "I'll wait.". She sighs a third time. She looks at the sky on the plane that reminds her of her long lost love. Special shot of her standing there extremely alone. She sighs a fourth time.

Easy fix for this movie have it so that Ares isn't the bad guy. Zeus made man but they were flawed conflict would arise and due to ares being born the god of war and getting strong because of conflict Zeus saw him as a threat. He blames Ares for the flaw in humans saying he corrupted them and they have their fight Zeus wins and to cover up his mistake he make the amazons lies to them and the god slayer in order to defeat Ares when he comes back. Ares reveals that Zeus is a dick like in every story involving him and that man is flawed by nature and doesn't need him to find a reason to fight. He also reveals the amazons are no better stating that based on words alone they were convince to train forever to kill a man they didn't even know and how its only a matter of time before a disagreement turns into an argument which turn into a fight until its it gets so out of hand sides have to taken setting up for wonder woman 2. This also allows the amazons to be flawed like man and allows for creative character to be born. Maybe one wants to bring man down because of their war hungry nature. Maybe one doesn't like the rule of the queen another could want to coexist with men joining the island. Possibilities are endless.
