I would love to see Organized chaos get dragged over the coals in a live discussion with Mauler. OC can sit behind a screen and call people incel and hold all 3 of his chins on his own time, but I'd bet he'd crumple like a paper cup if he had to explain even the bare minimum of his position on what makes movies good.
right now, that's all organized chaos does. He makes endless videos about mauler, nerdrotic, and other people involved in G+G FNT, and EFAP because Rags wounded his ego on two occasions.

Something I just now realized, years after this cataclysm of cinema blighted the universe, is that xXxOrganizedChaosxXx's BS argument for The Memory Story for a hyper-pedantic plea to "show don't tell" isn't just contradicted by Mauler, and everyone who has more functioning brain cells than operational taste buds, but by *the movie itself*
One of the few good parts (not even a whole scene, just a part of one) is when Dr. Strange is relaying to Concentrated Incel Wizard Cringe Strange the tragic story of his sister's death. The story itself is sad, but it's the way his voice subtly shakes as he tells the story, and all the implications of how that one moment has scared him for life and informed every single decision and character trait about Strange, from his ego, obsession with being the world's greatest surgeon (to save people), his control-freak inclinations, and his disregard for other's parameters and restrictions if it means gaining more power to control, save, and protect others that makes it truly heart-breaking...
... Well, by Chaotic Nasal Cavity's pedantic (il)logic of it always being better show instead of tell (if it means defending a terrible movie he likes from someone he arbitrarily hates), Dr. Strange should have whipped out a spell that does the same thing as The Memory Store and just straight-up showed his sister drowning, robbing the impact that scene would have had from having Strange tell the story himself.
By whatever pathetic electric impulses that loosely count as thoughts that congeal into a fetid ooze of logic in Organized Chaos's malignant brain, The Memory Store scene is better than the scene in Jaws when Quint tells the story of how he barely survived the sinking of the USS Indianapolis.
      Let that sink (heh) in...

Yes. This. And @Azure, it goes deeper than that. Look at how he's already bored and keeps lioking down... That's how majority of people watch movies... "Does he even have the floaty boots?"
The people that watch movies in this manner already wouldn't like MauLer because MauLer is obviously "attacking their feelings". (They miss the point: That the movie isn't good. All they see is how a guy is telling them: Look, Organised Chaos Man, look how much of crap you missed that breaks Dr Strange. Chaos Man cannot comprehend it. Because he's already disinterested. And THIS is the audience that Marvel makes movies for. THIS is why jumpscares in horror movies and stupid mindless explosions in superhero movies work. Because distracted people are brought back from the brink of disinterest with explosions and loud noises.)
Its also why the comedy in the MCu literally has pauses for the audience to laugh, so when the people around kinda laugh, bored-old-you in back to being interested in the boring movie, where nothing happens.

When Mauler says things like, "Why did the other Dr Strange waste time killing the girl slowly when he could have just killed her quickly to end the threat?" and all they hear is, "Marvel Movie Bad." He sets up the premise as if having dialogue is just out of the question. Like if you have 30 seconds of screen time with people talking and emoting and no CGI effects, the audience will just get up and walk out of the theater.
Remember Saving Private Ryan? Remember the scene in the church when all the soldiers are bonding and the one soldier shares a memory that hints that he has regrets about not sharing more the time he had with his mother? Remember that scene when Private Ryan laughs over the memory of his brothers getting into shenanigans until he remembers that it was probably the last time he ever saw them alive? You might think that those scenes are really deep, poignant moments that made the movie better by building those characters through backstory without taking you from the setting depicted in the film, but you'd be wrong. That movie was clearly shit because they just talked about those memories instead of walking past a CGI Memory Store in the bombed out streets of France where the movie could literally force the images into your eyeballs.

... yet at the same time, *the very first line of dialogue* in Multiverse of Mommy-Worship is blunt line of explanatory dialogue that tells instead of shows, and Unorganized Crap emphatically defended it.

If i was ever going to criticise Mauler, the absolute last thing i'd be coming for is his work ethic, his effort, the quality of his videos, his research or his reasoning. That initial video was 5 hours of dissertation level analysis on Marvel as a company losing the thread that is holding its properties together, interwoven seamlessly into valid critiques of the erosion of writing in modern film, then bringing it home as it pertained to Strange 2. It was damn near gold.
This is such a bad faith "reaction" by Organised Chaos, maliciously seeking to use left aligned political values to desperately try to pin Mauler as some sort of right wing gay hating styrofoam muncher. He is neither patient, nor smart enough to comprehend the levels your analysis went into.
I'm so annoyed watching this guy grunt his way through intelligent academic breakdowns, missing the purpose of the cutaways for levity, constantly interrupting while you're making a point to exclaim "YOU just overthink it. You nitpick too much" etc. Then of course, bitching about length and not being able to follow what was going on while playing on his phone rather than having the fucking DECENCY to pay basic attention. For doubling down on weird defences of the film, and also having the gaul to present his ugly streams as he does, then to critique you for your voice, your editing and your production quality? Nah man.
You deserve so much more than this half arsed affair.
Not that my politics had to surface at all during this, but as a lefty European myself I thoroughly enjoy your hyper "nitpicky" breakdowns for all the aforementioned reasons. I gladly devote evenings to you and your boys' critiques. Mauler, you and your possé do great work.

pick basically any Tarantino film and you'll have at least one scene of characters sitting around talking about what is functionally irrelevant to the movie.... but the way the characters interact with each other during the conversation sets up so much later on
The diner scene in Reservoir Dogs is a fantastic example of this as well.... you have a large cast of characters relevant to the story, and one of the first scenes of the movie is them just sitting around a table talking. However each one of them is explicitly defined for the audience for the rest of the movie simply based on how they interact with each other. It's a short, efficient, entertaining scene..... and it's all just dialogue

After Strange screams into the air, he picks himself back up from off the ground, wipes the dust off his knees, throws his scarf back around his neck, and continues walking down the street like he *didn't* just have a huge mental breakdown (typical New Yorker behavior); and then about a block later he gets confronted by Comic Book woman and we go from there.

For real, do you know how much on the spot portal technology could help humanity? Let's even take emergency services for example using those trained with the sling rings:
"HELP My husband's having a heart attack!" Just do a little arm wave and zip him straight into the ER, no ambulance/car ride needed.
"HELP My house is on fire!" Little flick of the wrist and dozens of gallons of water are airdropped on/in the house via portal.
"HELP We need the police!" Quick circle and suddenly you've got an entire squadron where they need to be instantly.
Sorcery clearly isn't something that's so hidden from the world anymore either, since Dr. Strange basically blew that door off its hinges and everyone knows about magic and sorcery now. I get that portal technology shouldn't just be dropped into the general public's hands, after all they've been proven to be very dangerous, from trapping sling ringless people in other dimensions to even removing body parts, but training professionals in their use would help so, so much.

I'm rewatching this and I'm reminded of the memory store and it made me think about "Show, don't tell." The problem is that people like Organized Chaos take it literally. Telling bad, showing good. Dialogue is bad because it's just telling, while memory store good because we are seeing what happened. But that is not what "show, don't tell" is supposed to mean; it's not supposed to be literal, it's supposed to mean use subtext to make the audience figure things out on their own. I found a better phrase to use, though I don't remember where I first saw it: "serve, don't feed". The writer is a waiter and they need to bring the food to the audience. A bad waiter would bring the food to the audience in the most literal way, taking the food and putting it in the audience's mouths. A good waiter places the food on the table, and it is up to the audience to consume it in their own way at their own pace.
The memory store is feeding the audience. We don't get anything except a literal recreation of what happened in their life. Sure, we are literally shown it, but the information is being told to us by the writers in the most direct way imaginable. Dialogue, meanwhile, abstracts the information. A character's biases can start to seep in. Are they telling the whole story? Is there stuff that they omit? Are they embellishing? Did things happen exactly as they said or are they misremembering small but key details? Do they look at the event differently in hindsight? How reliable is the character when it comes to narrating events? While the top level information is literally told, the subtext is shown by what a character chooses to say. There is no subtext in a memory store, it's just text.

One of my favorite scenes in _Jaws_ is when Quint is sharing his experience in the _USS Indianapolis_ disaster with Brody and Hooper. The scene is so simple: it's just three men sitting around a table talking while eerie music plays faintly in the background. But the monologue is so engrossing, the setting so atmospheric, and Robert Shaw's acting so compelling that it totally sucks you into the moment.
So given what a stink Organized Chaos and his sleep-deprived cohort made about "visual storytelling," would they condemn this scene for how dialogue-heavy it is? I guess we should rewrite it so that the _Orca_ just happens to drift past a floating Memory Store at that particular moment, Quint suddenly blurts out "Hey, Chief, I got somethin' to show ya," and jumps up onto the memory pad so that we can SEE the _Indianapolis_ blow up and the sailors get picked off by sharks one by one. Because that way it would be "visual," as all films are apparently supposed to be. Would Organized Chaos consider this an upgrade?

I just realized that the memory store is even dumber than we gave it credit for. The thing about memories is that they're imperfect. They are not a 1:1 recreation of what you saw. Your own biases will taint your memories. Look at how Arcane shows how Jinx's memories are warped by her trauma. You could have something similar, with certain parts of the memories exaggerated based on how they are perceived. It ought to be first person perspective because that is how we view the world and how we'd remember events. But no, this crap is good enough for "visual storytelling". They did the bare fucking minimum of a flashback visually, and they narratively shot themselves in the foot by claiming it as a person's memories. Well-crafted dialogue explaining their perspectives is unironically better, requires more writing talent, would be cheaper, and would ease off the already overworked VFX slaves.

Personally im not against the idea of memories being crystal clear, like the idea that somehow the memories can be reconstructed properly, but that technology if its free reusable and does nothing to the person would be fucking EVERYWHERE, which the movie isnt at all ready to tackle.
I think harry potter is a decent example of magic taking you to be a third person observer in a memory where you cant interact with things, plenty of other media does something interesting. Since i think its reasonable for a strong enough magic to recreate an area from a third person view, as long as the area is static and doesnt have important information you dont know. An example would be if im sitting in my room and i have been in there years upon years upon years it makes sense that i could recreate it as 3D space, but assume someone snuck up on me and hit me causing me to black out that part should never possible to know since i didnt see who did it.

im fine with the bullshit sci fi "we found your memories in your brain and can display them in a way that is crystal clear evne if you dont remember" the most clear example being photographic memory which yes sure we can argue that its an entirely different brain setup and save function but its not so far it breaks suspension of dissbelief.

@@Unknown-hb3id 'show don't tell' is one of those sayings that easily lets you sort who's a critic of media and who's.... Organized Chaos...
you should not tell the audience about major story events. Characters standing around spouting exposition to advance the plot is lazy screen writing. Show the audience how characters react to those events in the moment.
This doesn't apply the same way to character building moments. if something has happened to a character in the past, just showing the audience is in fact the lazy way to do it because it deprives you, the writer, of the ability to show how the character has been changed by that event. Having a good actor tell a story can be fantastic film making because you get to show the audience exactly how that character feels about the events, what parts they emphasize, what expression they have, the inflection in their voice.... the sequence of events is frankly less important than knowing what it's impact is
The 'memory story' scene is a great example of this.... visually it's 'more engaging' than simply two characters having a conversation, but you come away from it knowing fuck all about the characters as they are now, just their back stories. The events shown are, frankly, irrelevant to the plot of the movie, it's just backstory for a couple of characters that remain one dimensional throughout the entire runtime. What actual effect the events shown have had on the characters is up for the audience to fill in for themselves. So yeah, it was objectively the lesser way of doing that scene.
