We have a new tip on how to avoid holes when knitting the heel flap. This method is easy to learn and will give your knitted sock a small upgrade.
Summer is all about sock knitting as we like to work with lighter yarns during the warm months.

This is one of the best hacks I have ever learned. My heels now look tight and neat. I now have 4 skeins of the Lofton line. They are gorgeous. I just love when Anne says "don't worry it will be fine", too many stitches?Just knit 2 together. You guys are the greatest.

Good tip to fix a hole, I always find it easier to fix things as I go that way I don't have to go back afterwards.
I can't wait to try to pick up my stitches this way. I usually put the needle through both parts of the stitch on the edge and use the working yarn to make the stitch. I'm glad I didn't skip over this video thinking that I knew it all already. I'm working on my 4th of the 8 from the Lofoten collection, Thank you guys

Arne, thank you for showing us how you pick up the stitches. I've been picking up both legs and knitting the stitch them rather than picking up a row of stitches. Your way seems quicker.
I've been darning up my holes and maybe your technique will help there, too.
Finally your Norwegian knitting method is quicker than flicking so I'm going to try to move over to your way.

I love this tip and can't wait to knit another pair of socks. I've already knit a pair with one of the Lofotens colours and have another ball of yarn to start on. Sock knitting is my new favorite thing because it’s quick and light, good (as you say) for summer knitting. I also loved your last-summer’s-video (when you were way up north) on how to repair a beloved sock.

I’m from America so I knit the American way. I am trying to teach myself the Norwegian way because it seems to be faster. But I’m finding it hard to keep the yarn on my left index finger in tighter. The yarn gets so loose it falls off my finger. I’ll keep at it and hope I get better.

Me too. I can’t grip it to control the tension except when I use it for two strands, and the Left hand for the least dominant color.
Boy Arne, you have so many great tips! So simple yet so effective. These are the kinds of techniques I would never have known. Basically I'm a self taught knitter. No one in my family knows how to knit. At this point I'm hoping to share this skill with my grandkids (my own kids don't have an interest). I started knitting at about age 6 when a neighbor showed me the basic knit stitch. From there my Mom found a yarn shop who would teach beginners if you bought her yarn. She taught me to knit one pair of slippers. From then on it was me learning for myself. I was single Mom and had to focus my life on my kids and job so I didn't do much knitting until 5 years before I retired from that same job. I'm so glad to have found you both for my journey of rediscovering the joy of knitting. Thank you so much!
Hello both - can I just say this is one of the best videos I've seen on sock issues. I think I've now cracked sock knitting, but I was worried about the loose gusset stitches on one side and the little gaps. Twisting stitches and lifting/knitting that pesky loose stitch on the back are the answers! Thanks so much for both of these great tips, I am now enjoying my sock knitting, at long last!

I'm just about to start the heel on my Regia Lofoten in the Nusfjord colourway so I'll try your tip. Picking up the heel stitches and working the gusset of a sock is is my favourite part, but I've never used a needle to pick up all the stitches at once. Timely, because I'm just now coming to the heel flap and stitch pickup on a sock I'm knitting. . I'll give this a try.
So glad you are back and thanks for showing the sock heel. I looked for the Prym yarn twirly and could not find it on the American site. Handicraft.com is now the Prym site in the US. I have been using their circular and straight needles ( I still won't give my Boye) .

Perfect timing - I'll be casting on some socks later today with a skein of your Lofoten yarn! I have three colors to choose from in my stash and will save one skein for the Save Bear. I enjoy these tutorials and very much hope you continue Sit and Knit for a Bit even after we aren't all home so much. I really enjoy the podcast, especially the Norwegian culture and history and in fact, while I can't visit a Stave church in Norway (I live in Minnesota), I am going to visit a full size replica of the Gol Stave church in Bismarck, South Dakota and the Scandinavian Heritage Center as part of my summer vacation in a couple weeks - inspired by your road trip last summer.

Thank you! I used to dread heel flaps, so I switched to toe up socks with short row heels. Now, I’m inspired to try again. You just made picking up those stitches so much easier.
i started off with toe up and short rows also . just really didn"t like the way they looked . so i learned the heal flap and love it . i pick up the ladder then the stitch on each side when i do mine . no holes this way

WOW! This is fantastic and may get me knitting socks again. I have to admit - I have always picked up and knitted one stitch at a time. I will have to practice Arne's technique of picking up all the stitches in that section, then knitting them off. And I finally understand why I always have a harder time twisting stitches on the "traveling up" side. Thank you!

My sister made me a yarn unwinder after she saw my friends unwinder. I use it all the time along with the bowl she made which keeps my small notions in one place. Working on finishing a couple of UFO's then obtaining some of your newest sock yarn. So nice to see you both back!
