Socks were also my second knitting project. I started 18 months ago and cast off my 38th pair last week. I almost always have a sock on the go now. My sock projects can fit into my coat pocket or handbag whilst I’m out and about which is super practical as a mum. I get a few stitches in when ever I can. You’re right about them being great gifts too. I’ve knit for my friends and family and everyone has always enjoyed them.

I've been knitting socks for years and I agree with everything you said! Especially the part about it being way more beginner friendly than most people think. I kind of learned knitting in the "wrong" order (started with socks, then a sweater, then a couple of hats, and have yet to make a scarf lol). It really is a lot less intimidating than it may look, it's a cheap way to start because you don't need large quantities of yarn, and you learn so many important techniques. Great video! :)

This was a great video! I feel inspired to share even more reasons!
1.) It’s a great way to use single skeins, especially those more wild variegated ones you may not want to use in a garment.
2.) There are so many methods to explore, from the types of needles (DPNs, magic loop, 9 in circular, flexible DPNs), to an array of different constructions and heels (there’s this one pattern I’ve seen that basically has you knit strips for the sock), and some people can get really into customizing them for the best fit. If you get bored with repeating projects, there’s always a way to keep it fresh!
3.) While second sock syndrome is a thing, knitting the socks in tandem can really help!
4.) A 100 g ball of sock yarn can go a long way, especially if you use a different yarn for heels, toes, and cuffs. You can also use scraps for things like colorwork and stripey socks.
5.) Sock yarn is really versatile and can be used for many other types of projects, and you can hold it with other yarns to meet a thicker gauge for different projects.

Your list is exactly why I enjoy knitting socks. The 'sock heel turns are magic' is something I say a lot. You're knitting along, you do a few shortrows, and magically you have something people can identify as a sock! I also agree that there are so many patterns that you will never knit them all. I probably have 400 patterns saved and all of them are FREE. I have them divided into textures, lace, and colorwork.
I also love the idea of coming up with these patterns, if they are lace, textured, or colorwork. within the confines of the 56/64/72 stitch parameter. As a person who loves math, I find it fascinating.
Your froggy socks are adorable! You did a great job on both pair. Yes, handknit socks are amazing to wear, amazing to knit, completely portable. I enjoy knitting them so much, I have 8 pair on the needles. I would love to get a few pair off the needles because that is WAY to many. My goal is to finish those 8 and perhaps a few more. I want to knit 2 pair each for my grandsons because they came over to go sledding and had to borrow my socks! Their's will be tube socks, though, so they can wear them longer.

    • @nataliebeau
      @nataliebeau  7 місяців тому +1

Its so funny because growing up I always HATED math and told myself I would never have a job/hobby that has anything to do with it, but now I crochet, knit, and sew and I am constantly doing math 😅. I also teach theatre and have to build sets and there's SO much math in construction!! Maybe I don't actually mind it 🤣
Also, 400 patterns!!?!?! That is amazing!!

I learned to knit, just because I wanted to knit socks. I followed Marly Bird from Red Heart, she taught a 4 video (maybe 5 ) series, and I learned using DPN’S we knitted house socks on size 5 needles, but then we had the 100% ability to knit them. Everyone loves hand knit socks, I work on them all year, they are my Christmas presents and they all look forward to them. 😎

I knit 1.5 pairs of socks probably about 4-5 years ago (the second pair was for someone I was dating at the time, but we broke up before I finished them and I never polished it off). I found it fun at the time but didn't quite catch the groove.
But recently I've thought about becoming the types of knitters that only do socks!! Not exclusively actually, but I feel like I frequently want to knit but rarely know WHAT I want to knit and socks are the perfect project for that type of thing. There's always a need for them, they're fast to make, and it's easy to come back to if I get sidetracked with a bigger project for awhile.
The thing that really got me back into it was doing 2 at a time with magic loop. There's something so daunting about making a pair of something that I have to finish one at a time-- I almost never get back to the second one unless it is a gift or I'm on a time crunch. I don't know if you've tried it, but I think it's super fun and has elevated my sock game.
Thanks for the video!! Really inspired by your (relatable) passion for sockmaking.

I love hand knit socks, and i have tons. I learned knitting as a kid, but my grandma was knitting ONLY socks, so everyone was supplied already (woolen winter socks for the most part). So when i started knitting seriously during my university days (cause longer break times and public transportation rides), i knit different things like winter hats, scarfs, gloves and handwarmers on the go and big sweaters and stuff at home. I used crocheting (after learning it in primary school) more for lace crochet, cardigans and tops and ctochet lace, but i made a few crochet socks for my partner when we moved together. I started knitting socks after my grandma died and my socks started to fall apart, from there i started to knit thinner socks from cotton and/or linnen with my 1mm knitting needles (takes forever but worth it).
Honestly, knitted wool socks (with max. 25% synthetic for the Regia strenthening) are the best. I barely used my central heater this winter cause we were just wearing knitted socks all the time, they keep you perfectly warm.
Right now i have a pair of knee long socks, a scarf and a cabled sweater on my knitting needles. On my crochet hooks i have a laundry net (for my knitted socks to be washed in the washing machine), a pair of crochet socks for my partner, a chunky cropped jumper, a tunic (with color grading very fine yarn) and a lace cardigan (the last 2 made with a 2mm hook). I still have to work on the heel of the knitted socks at home, with instructions, cause i'm trying to find the type of heel i like most and am trying out different ones. In that time, my crocheted laundry net is my 'on the go' project. I usually make one net at the same time i make a pair of socks, or right after.

When I was teaching knitting, I would have my students do a sock as a first project after the basic stitching because of how much they could learn by doing it. I had them do simple ankle socks in DK weight for home slippers because they knit up fairly fast, they are easy to hide if they don't come out perfectly but they still are usually wearable even when big, they're just slippers then. And that can really help with confidence in the skills. Too many people I've talked to who learned and then put it down for years were not happy with their first project and never went back. Usually it was a neverending scarf that they didn't want to broadcast their mistakes on their neck and it took long enough to get bored with knitting. Socks are amazing first projects.

I am getting ready to make toeless socks they are great for flip-flop season and because I’m a diabetic the toes and my socks are driving me. Crazy actually painful so I decided to make these and the other reason I make socks is because I have big feet for a woman I wear an 11 men’s so I have to measure my foot in multiple places I don’t have big ankles or thick calves just really long feet, but I started in Germany when I was learning to knit making a pair of tights came from North Carolina and you just do not understand how cold it is until you move to Germany. As soon as I got my daughters tights made, I immediately went into lace socks. We went to Bavaria and everybody wore two pairs of socks with lace designs and it’s so fun remember when doing lace or color work, you can keep changing your pattern every couple of rows, so it’s a really good learning experience.

Another reason is how nice it feels to wear socks that are custom fit to your feet. Most commercial socks for adults come in two sizes: men's or ladies'. But feet are all different sizes and shapes! I have small feet but wide toes, and my hand-knit socks fit my "duck feet" perfectly. My toes are finally free to wriggle!

My first completed project after trying and failing to make a scarf (boringgg) was a pair of socks to give to my mom for Christmas. My favorite part about making socks is probably that I can take my project to class and nobody really bats an eye. I'm still in high school so teachers still care about what I'm doing, but knitting as a way to keep my hands busy is acceptable to most of them as long as I still take notes

I started knitting for many reasons, but one of them was because I wanted to knit socks so badly. Socks are sooo cool and soo adorable, I had to learn it. I guess I lucked out that I wasn't aware of exactly how hard it was. But it didn't bother me. I just took one step at a time and used the knitting equipment that worked for me so the whole process wasn't so overwhelming...meaning I used a circular needle first and then moved on to DPNS.

Id love a video on your top 5 favorite projects and why you liked them, whether its knitting/crochet, and your top 5 most disliked/demotivating and why. Might help beginners know what to avoid at first to not end up giving up on their projects because its too boring or hard.

Preaching to the converted here, but I am loving your enthusiasm for sock knitting! I agree with everything you said, especially about feeling like a wizard when turning a heel. It’s truly a magical thing. And hugs for your feet 👍. Knitted socks also slick away sweat and don’t need to be washed as often as store bought socks. My adult granddaughter took part in a charity hike wearing knitted socks in her boots, and she reported back to me that she was the only one who didn’t have blisters! Check out Summer Lee Knits and the patterns of Kay F Jones of the Bakery Bears podcast. Some gorgeous sock designers out there, although I must say I mostly knit plain with some colour play. Your froggy socks are adorable, and I hope you never lose your love of sock knitting. 🧦🧦🧦🧦🧦

I must know!

I think I’m already in the sock cult. I’ve been knitting for about 5 years. I started with a hat, then got bored with a scarf and abandoned that and knit socks. I’ve been hooked ever since. Last year I did the grocery girls sock bash where you knit a pair each month and there’s themes each month. I’ve tried many heels, toe up, cuff down even knit sideways but found my favorite formula for my feet: two at a time- side by side (not connected) on 9” circulars, toe-up, Turkish cast on, my own rounded toe pattern, fish lips kiss heel with an added mini-gusset, and a stretchy bind off on the cuff. I, definitely gong to knit those froggy socks!

I knitted a pair of socks once and I will say they last way longer than any sock I bought online or in the store. They can take a beating in the dryer and wash. It was worth it and I wish I knit more socks!!!
