I’m a huge Larry Bird fan and Larry definitely started it. And after learning magics personality and demeanor I became a magic fan to. You got to see magic and Larry and David letterman on UA-cam. That’ll explain it all. That being said magic was a great basketball player but I think bird had an edge on him when it came down to the mental part of the game. Great reaction

Larry is the better overall player skills wise. Magic had the better team, and he played slightly longer which gave him a little boost in some of his numbers…but Larry can do more, and except for assists (and turnovers 😂) leads in most categories. Their careers are so similar though, that their win loss difference is virtually neck & neck. If you take out Magics extra games (when he unretired) they are almost tied.
Larry has admitted he was the one who shut Magic out. I love Magic as a person…as Larry says “Magic makes everyone feel warm & welcome” but Larry needed to keep his edge. He couldn’t let Magic in & still keep his edge, so Larry never let his guard down. Not until they retired. I hope you’ll react to Courtship of Rivals Documentary, it’s really very good 😌

People from your generation don't know but this is really well known among us older people.
Not only is there a documentary that this was cut from but there was a Broadway play called Magic,Bird and a book they wrote together called " When the game was Ours". They did talk show appearances to publicize them. So yeah it is well known.
Bird is the better player I think. Magic had Kareem and the West was the weaker division back then.
Magic is still the best point guard ever though. Bird had more competition at small forward.

Bird started it, he never got over the NCAA Chamionship loss to the Spartans which Magic was the cause of the dislike, I would not say it was Hate. This is part of "A Courtship of Rivals" which is about an hour and a half...Magic had much more athleticism and smoother, but to be completly honest, I believe Bird was just a little better, till he broke his back in the summer of the 86 season.

  • @nanook8721

Larry Bird had a general rule that he was there to do a job, not to be friends with his rivals. There’s stories of him putting his hands behind his back when players from the other team would go to shake his hand before a game. It just wasn’t his style. But as he says in that clip, he didn’t care much for Magic, but he loved Earvin. In fact there is a part of that documentary when Magic is diagnosed with HIV. They interview Larry Bird, and you can see the look of devastation on his face. He said it was comparable to the death by suicide of his father. He didn’t want to play anymore; basketball didn’t hold interest for him anymore. I would truly suggest watching the entire documentary of Bird and Magic: A Courtship of Rivals. You’ll get to know these two men separately and as rivals/enemies/friends very well. It’s a beautiful thing. And, I have Larry as the better all-around player just by a little bit. But just in case you can’t tell, I love them both! They have brought me a lot of joy over the 30-ish years that I have been watching them.

    • @andybilakshow260

I agree with everything except I give Larry a little more of the edge. You could look at it like this totally random thought to get my full meaning. This is hypothetical:
Magic slept with 40DD's as his pillow. Bird used yesterdays game ball.

    • @nanook8721
      @nanook8721 Рік тому +1

@@andybilakshow260 I totally agree… Larry has the edge easily. When he played basketball, it was his life. I have basically heard him say that when you have a job to do, whatever it is, you do it the best you can, and never give up. I think he was born with an innate ability to excel at both playing and understanding basketball, and was raised with a very intense work ethic.

This came from the 1hr 27 min video, courtship of rivals. It is worth watching and reacting too. So many of your questions and perceptions about Magic and Bird will be answered. Magic said he wanted to shake Larry's hand and be friends, but Bird didn't feel the same. It was never hate but compitition. Both players had the same leadership and drive to win. Larry felt he'd lose that edge if they were friends. Magic on the other hand could be your fun charming friend off the court, but on the court his deminer changed and it was all business. I love both Magic and Bird as players and as men. If you don't react to the long courtship of rivals video please watch for yourself when you can. It's worth your time imho.

Bird wouldn't be friends with the enemy. Magic could act all buddy buddy with you, give you that toothy grin and still go for your throat. Bird couldn't. As Bird has said, you're there for a reason. You're there to win. It's why he wouldn't be friendly with Magic even back when they were playing together at the World Invitational Tournament. Bird knew they were going to meet again one day..on opposite teams. Both were great all around players. They could score, rebound, and though neither was a great individual defender, they both played excellent team defense (Bird was good enough at it that he made 2nd team all defense three times). But most important, both could pass the ball better than anybody, and they both made their teammates better to a greater degree than anybody save Bill Russell. That's the main reason why neither of them ever played on a losing squad. However, as Olden Polynice pointed out, Bird was better at creating his own offense all the way out to the three point line. And Bird was definitely better in the clutch. Both were great..top 3 IMO. But advantage Bird (BTW, the other guy in my top 3 is not Jordan. It's Russell).

I'm a Celtic guy. I've got to be like you, i've got to be 100. The black Magic on the west coast, limousines, fancy clothes and the night life. Fits Magic like a glove.
Larry the hick from French Lick. East coast, blue collar, drives a pickup a middle class vehicle, and drinks beer. That's Boston.
Magic makes everyone feel important. He likes people to like him (that's a good quality and so misunderstood) . He's naturally kind.
Larry more of an introvert. Didn't care if you didn't like him. Which a lot of people took as rude.
I think race had a lot to do with it. Cedric Maxwell said, as Larry was walking in to practice, here comes the white savoir. He said it loud enough for Larry to hear him. In an interview Max said black players at the time were racist in the sense they didn't think you could find a white guy who could play as good as any black guy. He had a point. The fans knew it. Black players were dominating the game. With people today being soooo sensitive no one will say what they're thinking. White people were proud that a white guy can be as good as any black guy. In a sport where white players were at a disadvantage because they don't have the jumping ability and the rest of the physical attributes as black players. Just Facts..

"Started it" or "at fault" are poor terminology. I've been a huge Larry Bird fan since he started with the Celtics when I was 7. He's absolutely the initiator of the rivalry because of his competitive spirit. He didn't like to shake hands with the "enemy". On this day, while filming this commercial, while magic was eating the lunch that Bird's mom made is when they became friends. Larry became friends with "Ervin", not Magic, as they said... he found that that Ervin was a great guy...
Having been a fan of every Boston team and having Bird on the court from my age 7 to 20, naturally I was a huge Bird fan and he was the greatest thing going, although Magic (who i never gave proper credit to until he retired) was right there with him and I still refer to my top three as Jordan Bird Magic in no order. It can differ from day to day depending on what I've just seen one of them do

Thanks for all your vids, and especially that you just talk about the person/player/team and never use the words black or white or even race. I became a Celtics fan in 1964 for a very unusual reason. I knew of Bill Russel but that was the extent of my basketball knowledge. When Magic took over for Kareem in center against the 76'ers, I thought Magic was the best player, being able to do that. My friend always talked about "Dr. J making a house call", but then Magic was diminating the 76'ers, he had to be the best. Magic was a very outgoing fun peson and Bird was very introverted and not so friendly. So Bird, along with the college finals game, and then both in the greatest of opposing NBA/East coast/West coast teams, "created" the rivalry. Then when the NBA started airing the finals at my dinner time and I learned about Bird then. However I still thought Magic was the best, because there was no UA-cam and highlight videos of the different players. But Magic said it best on David Letterman; He was the better Guard and Bird was the better Forward. If I had to hire only one for my team, it would be Bird, but a very difficult decision.

They would say hello to each other when they both rode the bench for Joe B Hall in the World Invitational in 1978. Ahead of the NCAA final in 79 Birds teammates got between Magic and Bird so there was no interaction. Their rookie year Bird fouled Magic unnecessarily hard and at that point Magic thought "Ok it's gonna be like that" so from 79-84 there was not much said between the two players....until the commercial when Bird informed Magic that Mom had prepared lunch. After that the mutual respect grew into friendship. Who on earth could better understand each other as both were the best 2 players on the best 2 teams for years. And both came from very humble beginnings, blue collar working class, respected their parents and their work ethic and from that adopted their own. Jordan was the same but never had an equal opposite during his reign. This is what separates Magic, Bird and Jordan from the others. Unlimited drive, killer instinct, willing to look in the mirror and work harder, and harder than anyone else. The morning after the Celtics beat the Lakers in 1984 Quinn Buckner went to Bird's house and Larry wasn't there, he was out running. When Bird returned Buckner asked him what he was doing and Bird replied "Getting ready for next year"

  • @mervgandishander

Bird started it but I can't really say it's his "fault." It was just a personality clash. Bird is the ultimate introvert. He was so shy Indiana was too big for him so he switched to Indiana state for college. Magic is the ultimate extrovert. He's the ultimate showman, always handles the spotlight like he was born for it. So yeah Bird started it, but I think he was just so socially awkward and competitive he just didn't know what to do and didn't shake magics hand.

Exactly, Bird even says in the documentary this video is taken from "I'm the one that did all that, to tell the truth" when talking about the rivalry. But it wasn't because he hated Magic, it was just that Magic was his greatest rival. Bird says that Magic is someone that can be friends off the court and still play his hardest against you come game time, but Bird couldn't play the same against someone if he became very good friends with him.

Bird and Magic is synonymous you can't say one without the other... Magic got more rings but Bird injured his back that it made it near impossible for him to play at his best. HOWEVER if you can take a step back and look at their careers collectively, together nobody stood a chance. They held Isaiah Thomas and the Pistons to two rings and the Philadelphia 76ers to 1 one. The rest of the 80's belonged to the Celtics and the Lakers... Imagine just Imagine if they had been on the same team... They held Michael Jordan back, they held the entire NBA and cemented both of their legacies in history together... If not for that classic rivalry of The Lakers and The Celtics compound that rivalry of Bird and Magic... That's a movie that played out in the NBA in 84 85 and 87...
84 Bird beat Magic 85 Magic beat Bird 87 Magic beat Bird again but injuries decimated the Boston squad and Birds back at that time was injured.

FRENCH LICK??? Larry Bird was born and raised in the small town of French Lick, Indiana, population today 1,792. Bird’s nickname was “the hick from French Lick”. As a child, he was accepted into a group of local black kids that played basketball together. He has been comfortable around black people all of his life and states, “he does not see color”. Probably his experiences, as a child have taught him this. So …the friendship between Bird and Johnson is the most natural thing in the world for them.

Both great players. Magic was the better Guard...Bird the better Forward. Overall, Bird was definitely the more complete player because of his shooting. Both worked hard to improve. Magic was actually a pretty poor Free Throw shooter early on for a Guard..around 76%...and worked hard to improve and became a great Free Throw shooter...88-91% and led the league in FT% one season. Magic won the NCAA game because Mich St was just better. It wasn`t just Magic vs Bird...it was Bird vs Magic, Greg Kelser & Jay Vincent. Kelser avg 17.5 & 9.5 at Mich St. Plus, Kelser & Vincent were NBA players later on. People today, especially kids, are clueless about the great players of the 70s, 80s & 90s. Bird, Magic, Jordan, Malone (Karl & Moses), Stockton, Dr J, the underrated Hakeem Olajuwon ( some of his stat lines are crazy..one was a quadruple-double 18pts 16Reb 11 Blocks 10 Assists as a Center!). Many others.

Friction between athletes is normal, the thing is, even if you are a great athlete there is no reason not to respect your opponent, little things like that can go a long way, yes we dont get along with everyone out there that is fine, but we as humans tend to judge others before knowing them, and that is our biggest mistake.

"Started" it? Man, you are trippin'. Started what? Their intense rivalry? It's this simple, dude. The fact that they had to play against each other, that they both would accept nothing less than victory, the media hype about the black/white superstar rivals, the East Coast West Coast thing, the Boston/Laker thing, and the fact that they played in an era where competition for Championships was NEVER friendly... All that and you think one of them had to do something to "Start" it? Neither one of them did anything to "start" it except be themselves, on those teams, at that time. Period. The better chance someone had to beat you, the less friendly it was gonna be. It was inevitable that the competition was not gonna be friendly. Jesus, you young people today just have no clue as to what real rivalries consist of, or what it was like back then. If nobody gave you a reason to be mad at them, then you invented one to motivate yourself. Today's athletes are wusses. Friendliness on the court in the middle of a series? These players today make me want to yuck up

@@msw8966 I also think that because today's athletes have very little loyalty to their cities, they don't feel it the way the one-team super-stars did back in the day. Less intense because they have less connection with the fans of their city. Many of the old fans have left for this reason, and the reason that they are now, as I said, wusses.

Today's game is friendly, I get it. Back in the day if you were an enemy that's what you were. When Magic and Bird squashed the beef I gave Bird respect. But Bird used to hurt my feelings lol. #lakerville

They always respected each other and kept tabs on what the other was doing. Larry just couldn't be a close friend with someone and then tear him up on the court. The only player Larry hated was Lambeer, ( think that's how it's spelled), because he was a dirty player. No one in the league liked that guy.

Oh.. bird started it... better player? Magic was my favorite back then.. but hard to say... I think Magic was surrounded with a little more talent so maybe didn't have to do as much as often...I think Bird was put in more "clutch" scenarios why there are so many highlights.. where magic was clutch.. but so was Kareem... . not to take away from Kevin and Parish (who I met AMAZING the CHIEF!).. anyways I have too hard of time putting one against the other cuz their grind, will, and respect was equal.. was the same.....
