Knuckleball is when the ball don't spin. It acts crazy as a result. Difficult for pitcher to control, for catcher to catch, and for hitter to hit.

HHaha..I was in my younger days (I’m old now) but was a catcher up to high school and it was the only position I played. But we had one pitcher that could throw a awesome knuckleball.
And I remember he was pitching and I was signaling for a fast ball…or other pitch…and he shook it off…and after trying to call for something other then the knuckleball..and knowing it was coming no matter what..I mumbled..”damn it…okay” and signal for it.
And the batter…heard me mumbling and as the pitcher started his windup the batter said “it’s that damn knuckleball isn’t it.”

Also: in that Pacers game, just before Larry came back, the Pacers coach warned his team Larry was coming back out & that the place was going to erupt….which it DID!! That stadium went wild! And did you notice that steely glare he had when he kneeled down? Or when he was walking out onto the court? That man meant BUSINESS!! 💥
And YES he dominated when he came back out. The Pacers were ahead until LARRY got there but he just took over & won the game for the Celtics.
There’s clips on UA-cam of interviews that both Celtics & Pacers gave about how impressed they were with Larry’s performance. One Pacer said it was the most impressive thing he’d ever witnessed, the kind of thing you tell your kids about. It was definitely inspirational.

Larry Legend was a WARRIOR of the highest order on the basketball floor. That is why he is THE Legend. For those of us who saw him, that is why the the Legend lives on. A simple broken back doesn't stop him. Navy seals would have called him brother. Nobody today would be worthy.

I know about working through back pain. I was shot in the lower back by a gang and as a result, I had to hold-off college for a year to heal. I was studying Nuclear Medicine Technology and the day I woke up after my FIRST day in 'clinicals' - ie: helping move 400+ pound patients around - I felt worse than I had since the day AFTER I got shot when the pain had time to seep in. I even had to take my CANE to clinicals, it was that bad. I couldn't take any pain medicine, either...and I did it for a YEAR, until I finally had to give in b/c I just wasn't able to do the job right with the pain in my back.
...and Larry Bird was out there playing basketball for years after. The guy isn't Human.

The significance of the mangled finger story is that Bird said he had a better feel for the ball before the injury. He played his entire NBA career with a mangled finger! So if he was as good as he was WITH a mangled finger, imagine how much better he’d have been with an unmangled finger!!!
Same goes for his back! He played over half his career with a bad back! It got so bad his legs got numb! Imagine how much better he’d have been with a healthy back!

Whenever you watch that famous clip of Larry holding up his finger after winning the 3 point contest, take a good look at his finger.
Also, at 14:07 he used his left hand to save the ball instead of using his right hand to save his cheekbone. Here is a video showing his teammate picking up that ball. The play continues to the other end of the court while Bird is still down.

While the video is talking about Bird in the 1991 season, the third of what the video called the worst era of Bird's back issues, you comment on how unathletic he looks coming down the court. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Yup, when his back was battling him he didn't run as fast or sure as he used to. But still torched opponents. Bird adapted. If one asset was compromised, he adjusted or developed another to compensate. He's Larry Legend for sooo many reasons.

He also had double Achilles surgery which had to effect his running, jumping and rebounding. The rebounding didn't suffer at all, proving you don't necessarily need to jump to the rafters to be a great basketball player. His jump shot was something of beauty and he barely left the floor when he launched one. He had so much upper body strength and shooting from the side of his head instead of the front of his face gave a little more leverage than using your legs to jump to get the ball to the basket.

If you look at his right finger in the clip where he is holding up his jersey, you can see how messed up his finger was. This injury plus, double Achilles heel surgery, 7 years with an unstable spine and STILL he was able to play the way he did. Seriously, how anyone could deny he is the GOAT, is astonishing to me. Just imagine, for a moment, what a healthy Bird could have done. The 1986 season times ten.

A Knuckle Ball is a pitch that was used in baseball back in the 80's and before. Not used that much today in MLB. To get an idea take a look at a video of a pitcher named Phil Niekro who pitched for the Atlanta braves in the 1970's or check out Reggie Jackon's 3 HR game in game 6 of the 1977 World series vs. the Dodgers when he hit his 3rd one off a Knuckle ball pitcher named Charlie Hough.

He is right...a knuckle ball in baseball is when the ball is griped and thrown using the knuckles rather than the fingers, this causes the ball to not spin which makes the ball "drift" back and forth and move at a slower speed then you would expect. Think of it like the difference between a musket (no rifling in the barrel) and a rifle (rifling in the barrel) the rifled round because of the rifling spins in the barrel so it comes out spinning which helps it cut through the air more effectively which gets it to the target faster and with more accuracy.

a knuckle ball is a baseball pitch thrown with your fingers bent in such a way that the knuckles are determining the spin, or lack thereof, of the ball. It is an attempt by the pitcher to reduce the spin on the ball as much as possible....if thrown correctly, a knuckle ball drops just as it is crossing the plate. It also reduces the speed of the ball as it comes at the batter. It acts like a change up...by that, I mean, from the batter's perspective, it looks as if the pitcher is taking a full windup, and trying to throw the ball as hard as he can. It fools the batter into thinking that the ball is coming much quicker than it really is. Usually, the batter swings way too early, making them look foolish. Also, major league players can usually see the seams on the ball as soon as it leaves the pitcher's hand. Once they find the seams, and can determine the spin of the ball, the batter can tell what pitch the pitcher is throwing. A knuckle ball disguises the type of pitch it is, because the spin is greatly reduced. It is very deceptive if thrown correctly. But, it is very hard on the arm of the pitcher. There are very few, if any, true knuckle ball pitcher around, and there are very few in MLB history. Now, when someone says, that looked like a knuckle ball, when referring to a basketball throw, or pass in football, it is simply a reference to how weird the ball looked when thrown.

A knuckleball is a pitch that you use your knuckles to throw the ball. It's a very hard pitch to throw it can ruin your arm if thrown wrong. I can't remember who was the last pitcher who did. Please forgive any misinformation.

I think the last knuckleball pitcher is R.A Dickey. The ones i've seen pitch are, Tim Wakefield who is the knucklerballer Jackie mentioned talking about the softball injury, Charlie Hough, Phil Niekro, Joe Niekro

@@kathysiedlecki6364 The knuckle ball pitch extended pitchers careers who tore a rotator cup or some other shoulder injury. The surgery techniques were primitive back in the 70's ‐80's. Now you can have microscopic surgery with a couple small holes to repair the muscle. I know this because I had surgery in the '70's which I never did get the movement back to what it was In 2015 same rotator cup, totally different out come. Not only repaired the new injury but the old one as well. I can play catch with my grandson and I have no pain. All of that to say if a pitcher injuries his arm throwing a knuckle ball, it's probably the old injury he had repaired.

@@kathysiedlecki6364 If If didn't know better I would think it would be bad for your arm since it's a hard pitch to master. I tried throwing it after my first injury but that didn't go well. If you throw it with rotation on the ball it ends up being 75 mph cupcake. The less the ball spins the more it will dance.

The photo they show in the knucle injury piece is a school uniform. Im sure thats a baseball uniform because Indiana State would not have had a mens softball team The injury came in a pickup game. It could have been a softball game, but I doubt it.

*Bird's index finger was injured in a softball game.
*The photo of Bird in the ISU baseball uniform is from the one doubleheader Bird played in for the school. The baseball coach challenged Bird, so Bird took him up on it. His presence filled the stands; he batted .500; he got knocked out in a collision with the catcher when they both went for the ball. This was after the NCAA basketball Championship game and before the destroyed knuckle in the softball game.

Larry wasn’t only called Legend for his excellent skills and b-ball IQ, but also for his insanely high tolerance for pain while still excelling - In pain beyond what most people could barely endure at all, Larry overcame and played against top-tier athletes and *excelled*.

Knuckleball - a pitch (baseball or softball) that is thrown with no spin on the ball. With no spin the ball isn't stabilized and wobbles up, down, left and right, with no way to guess where it's going to go - it's as bad for the catcher to catch as it is for the batter to hit. The jinking all over the place isn't BIG, but when it's all over the place, it's VERY difficult to hit (or catch) the ball. Pretty sure that is the same in soccer - no spin, so the soccer ball doesn't follow a nice, clean path.
