Yeah.. so many people don't realize what is going on in the highlights of that game. It was the deciding game of the series.. Bird due to injuries is on the decline. He smashes down on the floor head first. Doctors told him in the locker room your done. Got a concussion.. ect.. you can't play. He told the trainer to please get him some water. When the trainer left the room.. Larry ran back out to the court.. put on a show and won the series. LEGEND

@@FreedomFighter2112 Did you restrict it to the last 50 years to keep Wilt Chamberlain out of your ranking? Wilt leads them all with 55.4 for his career. But that is misleading. They didn't keep official stats for blocks and steals in those days, so this is just points, rebounds, and assists. He would probably have closer to 75 if we had those numbers. Wilt lacked the competitiveness of Bird, and the ability to elevate his teammates that put Bird in a class of his own. But if this is a numbers game, there can be no GOAT other than Wilt.

There's a story of when Larry was a rookie in Boston he went to one of the janitors for the Boston Garden and asked him when he showed up to unlock the facility. Janitor was a little confused but said he usually came in at around 6 am. Larry said 'If I meet you out here at 6 am, will you let me in with you?' Again the janitor was confused since the Celtics' practice didn't start until 8 am, but Larry was insistent and the janitor relented. Next morning the janitor shows up to the garden and Larry is outside waiting for him. Janitor lets him in, Larry goes to the locker room, gets changed, and heads to the court to start his warm ups. He does stretches, pushups, runs laps, and shoots free throws all by his lonesome. At about 7:30 other members of the team start showing up and Larry's still on the court shooting. Practice then officially starts at 8 and Larry's all warmed up and loose while the other guys are still cold, and Larry's just cooking them in drills and shootouts. The coaches start to notice and even though Larry started his rookie season from the bench, by the mid-point of the season he was starting.

Ok, I'm way older than you guys, I watched Bird play with my own eyes. Something these highlight films don't show enough was his genius at passes. If you thought you had guarded him, turned out his "bad" throw went right into the hands of a teammate in scoring position. If you thought his desperation dive out of bounds for the ball was for show, well, the ball bounced right into the hands of a layup master. Of course he was a master shooter, but they don't give him credit enough for how great a team player he could be.

That famous Bird steal - it was Game 5 of the 1987 Eastern Conference Finals, series tied 2-2. The steal and basket by Dennis Johnson put the Celtics up by one with one second left in the game. The Celtics won the game and eventually won the series in 7 games. It would be the last time Bird made it to the Finals (where they lost to the Lakers). Bird's steal kept Detroit from reaching the Finals that year but they made it to the Finals for three consecutive years after that.

The whole sequence of that was Rodman rejected Bird shot and it went out off a Celtic player, Scott Wedman I think. So all Zeke had to do was inbound the ball and the game would have been over. Bird hung back and made Zeke think it was over and he knew exactly where the pass was going to go. Isaiah said the whole thing unfolded in slow motion to him, with Bird standing on his toes with his heels just off the floor over the baseline waiting for DJ to flash down the lane for the pass and the layup with one second left. He didn't even have to look down to know exactly where he was on the court. Greatest single play I've ever seen.

Chuck Person is one of the all-time great players from the University of Auburn. Was the 86-87 Rookie of the Year after being the 4th overall pick. While with the Pacers, consistently averaged between 18-20ppg while shooting well from 3pt range for that era (35-37%). He never made an All-Star team but he was a good player. He led the Pacers in scoring, before a young Reggie Miller emerged as their star player.

His run from 84-86 (3 mvps, two titles, three appearances, two finals mvps) ranks up there with any three year run by anyone ever. Not to mention he was the best player on the 86 team that is considered the greatest team ever besides the 96 Bulls. I would argue though the talent level in the league in 96 was not what it was in 86. All the stars were getting older, expansion teams came in and they sucked, and we were a few years away from Pierce, Vince, Kobe, Tmac, prime shaq etc. In 86 a lot of stars just happened to be in the prime of their career and Bird was still the best

He was like a general on the court, and he had the physicality and bravado to take it right at you if he had to. You guys talked about Stephen Curry three point shot percentage which is 42% career. I looked at 9 categories
Field goal%, points per game, assists per game, rebounds per game, steals per game, blocks per game, free throw %, minutes per game, percent of games won they played in
There is only 1 NBA player who is in the top 250 players of all time in all of the categories and that is Bird.
Additionally, Bird is in the top 60 players of all time in 7 of the 9 categories - nobody else is.

Single mom with kids and Larry worked hard and played to get into college. Everything he did was for a reason and to survive. He played better for his coach that he admired and respected.

That is why Bird is still in the convo for "The Goat". If Bird would've made the last second shot against the Lakers for a 4th ring. He, in my opinion, would be "The Goat" or at least even with MJ! The greatest ever. More end of time, game winning shots than anyone. Dropped 47 on Portland left handed! When asked by reporters why he used only his left hand, he said, I'm saving my right hand for LA, we play them tomorrow night! Won 3 MVPs during the greatest era of players. 3 3 point contest in a row , one while wearing his warm up stuff! Played the last 6 years with a broken back and blown Achilles tendon! Let me say this again for the doubters....HE PLAYED HIS LAST 6 SEASONS WITH A BAD ACHILLES TENDON AND A BROKE BACK! He said in an interview, if Len Bias hadn't died, he would have retired in 86 or 87, because Bias would have been the best in the NBA, better than Michael! Because of his back, they took a stationary bike to all games. Larry had to ride it, 1-2 hours before each game, to loosen his back, up!! Was the first 50/40/90 guy. When playing the bulls in conference finals, swept them! As a rookie, on third day of camp, came out and told reporters, this league is nothing, I will dominate this league! Worthy said, he would rather guard Jordan than Bird! Made 2 shots on purpose from behind the backboard! Got the whole Atlanta bench in trouble, for his shooting display against them. When the rockets had the Twin Towers, they should have won 2 titles. Bird and the Celtics, stopped them! He's the goat. Maybe the only better player was pistol Pete, but he just burnt out too soon, plus born with a unusually small heart pump side. He once told an opposing player who has a good first half against him, " are ur parents here, cuz ur not gonna want them to see, what I'm about to do to you!" So Bird drops 27 on him in the second half, and also shut him down. He tells the guy after the game, " that was for ur mom!" Ice cold! He played during an era, when there was no hack a Shaq foul, no finger hand elbow or body check fouls. And when centers and power forwards would break ur bones and punish you, if you went inside! I think it was either Chuck Daily or Pat Riley who said, " u want a end of game shot, pick Jordan. U want a shot to save ur life, pick Bird!"
