Hesh has the best survival instincts of all. I always love seeing it. When Eugene cracks a joke about Vito having a small pecker, they all laugh and for a moment Vito isn't sure whether to laugh or be offended. We've seen fights break out over jokes like that like, Little Paulie's "you would know, sweetie." Hesh recognizes the potential for hurt feelings and gives Vito a friendly tap on the shoulder, to signal that they're all just friends laughing together. It works, because Vito breaks into a smile along with the other guys, and doesn't mind the joke. This is "breaking balls" done right. It's just harmless fun, with no offense meant. Then when Chris comes in and starts being offended, Hesh fries to diffuse the situation by changing the subject and offering to deal Chris in. But at that point, what the other guys have said has made Chris suspicious that they were laughing at him, and he won't let the subject go. Finally, when the harsh words start flying Hesh remains seated. He's not going to make the situation any more volatile, and he's not going to take sides or make himself a target. Perhaps most importantly, he knows his place as an outsider among these made men. It's clear why Hesh has survived and remained welcome all these years around such violent and volatile men. He keeps his cool, doesn't let his ego lead him, and smartly avoids violence and shows respect, without letting himself look weak or be taken advantage of. It's a tightrope walk. The only ones as canny as Hesh are Carmine, Sr. Carmine, Sr. doesn't seem to make a mistake he suffers from, although he does let Johnny Sac endanger his life. Junior is brilliant but can afford to be looser and less circumspect, because of his high status and family connections. Hesh is amazing because he's not Italian, he's a Jew, and can't ever be more than an associate of the family. Everyone knows that while Hesh is a friend, as an outsider they have no obligation to be loyal to he can be discarded immediately without a fuss if he ever proves inconvenient. So Hesh has to be very careful to never make a mistake. Hesh is eventually pushed into lending Tony money. Hesh knows it's a bad idea and can damage their relationship. As Ralph tells Artie, it's not good to lend money when you can't do what it takes to get it paid back. But Tony insists. Even Bobby, probably the most honorable and decent mafiosi we ever see in the series, tells Tony to dispense with decades of friendship and steal the money from Hesh. Hesh is an outsider, he is always on thin ice and has a lot of balls even to just hang out with these guys. As the only trusted insider who is still an outsider to This Thing, and a long time confidant of the family bosses, Hesh also gives us a unique perspective. There's a scene later in the scene where he estimates Tony's finances. Nobody other than Tony knows Tony's finances, and Tony would never tell anyone. Not his wife, lawyer, or even Sil. But just from being around them so long and being smart, Hesh is able to see what most other don't: that Tony wastes fortunes on gambling and luxury purchases, depending on his income rather than investing. That's why he's willing to risk his life whacking a boss of the Five Families for "the Esplanade scratch" to build another house. Part of the reason these guys are so greedy is that they're poor with money. I'm sure Hesh doesn't have boss-level income, but he saved up and invested and eventually bought a beautiful ranch. But that's because he's not like the mafia men. Guys that join the Mafia aren't long-term planners. They want action, excitement, violence, and fast money. They all act like they're invincible, until the day their number comes up. I'm glad Hesh was a character. He's fully in their world, and one of the guys, but different and fundamentally an outsider. He's interesting. You can see his unique survival skills in many scenes. Even when Hesh is upset over his relative being beaten, and he yells at Christopher, he apologizes although Chris isn't even made yet. Hesh knows today's mook can be tomorrow's boss. Unlike some of the other old timers who struggle to adjust to the new order and treat everyone younger than them as a kid (Feech, Richie, even Junior, although not Carmine), Hesh knows better. He's had to be better to get that close and survive. Everyone else we see get that close to mob eventually ends up dead. Lorraine had a similar position to Hesh. As a woman, she was outsider who could never be an insider. But she still worked like one of the men. She had close friendships. But she got too involved, and was killed for it. Though Hesh is an advisor and asset to the family and kicks up to them, and is very close socially, Hesh manages to keep his distance and not put himself in danger by involving himself in dangerous business. At least until the final season went Tony doesn't give him a choice, and Hesh basically ends up out over it. It is possible to work with the mob and not get hurt, but it's certainly extremely tricky. Hesh shows what it takes, but even he is out at the end. With his life and money, which is more than we see with a lot of the other characters who end up inconvenient to the mob. I suppose there's Tom Hagen in _The Godfather,_ but even he's unlike Hesh. He's more like a brother to Michael Corleone than a true outsider. Hesh is accomplishing the almost impossible by being a long-term friend to a mafia family, while staying independent. Hesh never has anyone looking out for him. Most of the mobsters are impulsive and have poor judgement, even if they're smart like Johnny Sac or as highly intelligent as Tony Blundetto was. Some are really brilliant, like Carmine and Junior who both achieved the rare feat of making it to the top while avoiding prison or death. But Hesh had no margin of error or benefit of the doubt, and so for him to survive took the best survival instincts at all. We can see them clearly in his scenes. He conducts himself the best, at least from his goal of trying to not make enemies among men who kill at the slightest provocation. Being a member of the family or a boss provides protection, but is also more difficult because conflict is unavoidable and one must take sides. Hesh doesn't have to do that, but he also doesn't have any code of protection he can cite. He'll never be able to stand up and say "You can't talk to me that way, I'm a captain now!" Hesh has to survive entirely on his wits alone, with no allies and no family to support him. Good for him that he's up to the challenge.
Man, glad you mentioned Hesh lending that money to Tony. I still think it’s the worst mistake he made. Also to add to your overall analysis regarding Hesh. Remember Season 1 when he was taxed by Junior which gave Tony that “agita”? Hesh calmly approached Tony and told him to relax because he understood that ultimately what the boss (being junior) says, goes. Hesh only disagreed with the amount being taxed. Great move by Hesh because he knows better, respects the hierarchy as an outsider and just wants to survive like you said.

Vito deserved an Oscar for pretending to be into Adriana.
I’m surprised Vito didn’t open his mouth wide when Chrissy chucked that sandwich at him
Tony's Crew "blowing" things way out of proportion.
The FBI playing telephone was funny as hell
Chrissy throwing the sub is hilarious
Bobby's line to me was always so out of character for such a mile mannered dude, which makes it 100x funnier 😂
His attitude was changed a bit in season 5
By the time he got the word it has probably passed by the entire family.
I love the “parade float” line. How could he say that without anyone cracking up.
vito wasnt mad at chrissy for being out of line
vito was angry at chrissy cause he wasted a perfectly good sandwich
I thought Vito and Adrianna were first cousins. Richie Aprile was both their uncle and Jackie Jr was a first cousin.
0:50 i was this close. Sure you were Vito
Then you got a problem because your bongjon isn't that long
He was that close with Johnny Cakes
Wait, aren’t Vito and Ade cousins?
Paulies face lighting up as he heard “blow to the head” lmao
Let's be honest, Vito only got angry because the sandwich missed his mouth.
This and the intervention were the two greatest scenes.
He threw a sandwich at Vito
That’s gotta be resolved
why is vito sticking his middle finger at Eugene 1:24 😂😂😂
it really does not feel like Sil Gossiping about tony but that scene is still so funny 😂😂
Love how Paulie was getting a manicure
One of my all time favorite scenes from this amazing show.
Classic 😂😂 I’m currently rewatching sopranos and forgot all about this part 😂😂
For a bunch of tough guys, they constantly talked about each other behind the other's back like a bunch of gossiping high school students.
Quasimodo predicted all this
Your brajole ain’t even that long 🤣
If the FBI had just flipped that guy in white. He knows where all bodies are.
0:45 When Christopher was in rehab Adriana was calling him all the time, vito he was that close 🤏🏼 ….
to blowing the security guard
Juniors Joke was the best lmao
