What I love about this scene was that, while Tony got defensive, it was clear that he received Silvio's message. It may have pissed Tony off, but the message was sent and received.
Agreed, but Tony also sent an important message to Sil, that being the boss isn't so easy and he has to weigh multiple factors when making decisions, with no safety net below him. Sil wouldn't appreciate this until Tony's coma at the start of the final season, when Sil was acting boss and struggled with that burden.
They were both right. Silvio was right in his analysis of Tony. And Tony was right that Silvio didn't appreciate the burdens of being boss, a fact which became clear during Tony's coma in season 6 when Silvio was acting boss and got overwhelmed.
well even before Tony's coma I'm sure Silvio knew he wouldn't be able to handle it. "Some people are better at being number 2" was said before season 6 i'm sure. Sil was happy running his club and taking care of rats
"I'm sorry you feel that way" was one of the most painful moments in the series. This was the point where Silvio realized, damned if I do damned if I don't. Tony really undermines everyone who has ever helped him and the pain everyone else has also experienced in this moment.

It didn’t help that both Gene and Ray died when Tony went under. This led to Bobby and Vito jockeying for more power and control with Sil left to arbitrate. Not to mention Paulie was his normal cheapskate self.

Silvio was 100% right,Tony does have a problem with authority, case in point when Tony was stopped in his car with Carm for speeding, and instead of just accepting the ticket, ready to put the whole situation behind him,he responded to the officer with insolence because he doesn't like authority or being obedient. But what really bothers me is that Silvio was Tony's only true friend, made evident through Tony's Nightmares where many a time when Tony would be feeling like shit,Silvio would appear in the Nightmare and then Tony would feel better and of course there was the most the decisive proof of Silvio's friendship when Tony was shot, putting him on life support-all of Tony's Captains weren't concerned about Tony pulling through, they were all psyched considering the financial gains for themselves if Tony was to die,not Silvio though, who would of prospered the most out of Tony's demise.Even when pressed by his wife to assume Tony's role,Silvio was having none of it and was just upset about the prospect of his friend dying,so for Tony to respond to Silvio's genuinely concerned advice by being defensive and getting up in Silvio's face as if he were one of his common mooks really fuckin upsets me-seriously,how many Consiglieres actually love and respect their Capo?...Just 1-Silvio Dante.
***** I never thought of it that way,but you're right,he totally did show blind favouritism towards blood and Tony B was a Psychopath whilst Christopher was a Sociopath so you can blatantly see the calamity in Tony's value.Nice deduction.
king78802 To properly answer that question it's necessary for me to clarify what the word "Psychopath" actually means since, like so many other Terms portrayed in various media,it has been over-simplified,like the Term "Libido" which has been over-simplified so much over the years that it now means "sex-drive" when in fact it originally meant "Life Energy";the inborn fuel that drives all people."Psychopath",generally gives people connotations of axe murderers and madness, when in fact the word actually refers to a "Personality Factor"-a prime, overarching aspect of someone's behaviour, for example Russel Crowe has "anger" as a personality factor and Shia Leboef probably has "petulance" as a personality factor of his.Psychopath,is a noun derived from the personality factor that is "Psychopathy"-a personality factor that is characterised by an enthusiasm or tendency towards Brutality(savage violence) and an indifference towards the suffering that said Brutality inflicts on another. Now if You contemplate about The Sopranos you'll realise that not only did nearly every Wiseguy and Mook in the show have it,or some level of it,but that Tony B had it alot, which probably contributed to him being quite introverted and unscrupulous.
You're right, gregarioussorrow. Silvio's a solid consigliere. He's talking to him in private and respectfully, the way it should be done. Tony really comes across as a prick here.
Agree with everything, well said, but for one thing ("All due respect")--Silvio wanted no part of wearing the crown. Didn't he get all anxious, queasy or whatever, some scene with his wife? That's why Tony goes for that weak spot, he know his friend well, since a kid just the same as Sil knows him, and because Tony DOES suffer this pride, authority thing, and HATES being challenged as to HIS authority, etc...he tries to hurt Sil a little here, i.e. YOU wouldn't know how you are all alone, caus YOU don't have the balls, etc, to be King. Which IS pathetic, true or not, to say to him, as Sil IS his right hand and friend. But that's Tony--same as when trying to get Chris to drink, or rattle Janice's pans, regarding Harpo her son at dinner, since she and Chris were doing BETTER than him...exhibiting some sort of self control, etc....semi happiness.
What I love about this Scene is that to me, Silvio’s silenced wasn’t that he was afraid due to Tony’s threat. But that despite Silvio laying out his hypocrisy, pride, and carelessness for others. He proves Silvio right by immediately giving him excuses for his behaviors and becomes belligerent when criticized
You know why so few in the mob made it to old age on the street? Because they spewed threats like this all the time and they were taken seriously. "Will be dealt with, in time." That gets you shot next time you go open your car.
Everybody here says "hats off to Gandolfini (and he deserves it), but not much is said about the man who plays Sill - "Little Stevie" Van Zandt - Guitarist for Springsteen's E St. Band. He's awesome for having no acting experience!
@David Sharma I could go either way on this. First of all, I really don't think actors have a difficult life and I believe that most of them are well compensated for what they do once they reach this level (what percentage of aspiring actors even make it to this level?). However, impersonating a character while remembering lines by yourself is a pretty naive comparison to what they do. YOU may think you're doing a good job, but are you really? It's entirely up to the director. Some shoots can last for 16 hours. Some scenes have to be re-shot because the certain delivery on a sentence didn't satisfy what the director was looking for. The fact that Steve Van Zandt was able to perform this well on his first acting gig is a rarity. For all I know, that could be you as well. I certainly wish it was me!
@David Sharma I'm not an actor and never will be. I just appreciate what they do. As soon as they open their mouths and talk about politics, they lose my respect.
@John Lorton damn you typed all that like I was gonna read it😂😂😂. I've watched every episode mulitple times. One of the greatest shows ever on TV. You don't like my comments, to bad, this is America and you just have deal with it😂😂😂
He respected and understood everything he said in this scene. But as boss, he could never let him know that. As boss, he was already ahead and calculated the pros and cons of every situation.
I think he was more pissed that Silvio was right. Tony knows full well he doesn't want to eat shit. And NEVER does. He ends up taking out Tony B, but HIS WAY, so he can save face. So he never took Silvio's advice, and never would. Tony never, ever, would let go of his pride, even if it cost himself and the family everything. Silvio was the only one that could tell him this, and not end up DEAD. Tony was pretty pissed though.
SVZ brings it 100% to everything he does. He’s an unusual human being. That last line “You need me for anything else”, the words convey that Tony is still in charge and he supports him, his tone and body language convey disappointment. Perfect. People in Hollywood making millions to headline films don’t have a percentage of his acting ability on his first foray.
He's an over-actor and a caricature because he consciously modelled his performance on Al Pacino in Scarface and the Godfather, so these "serious" moments tend to stand out, he's still a good actor and it adds some depth to a role that seems a bit two dimensional on the surface.
Silvio reminds me of The Wire's Slim Charles in some way. Both are loyal, wise, intimidating, they know how to put their egos aside when they have to... This particular scene reminds me of the one where Avon tells Slim Charles "stop double-talking me!" when he has to admits he can't reach out for experimented muscle.
That's a great analogy. I love how Slim Charles was willing to take deeath with pride when he thought Omar was going to shoot him and when he kills Cheese because he has standards and doesn't want someone that overly-ambitious in the group. Silvio also stays loyal to Tony despite shit going down. Both amazing shows.
The season 5 of The Sopranos took everything to a darker level. Making Tony look more menacing than in the previous seasons by opening his heart letting every of his problems go into his mind and facing them no matter the consequences.
Because Sil knows how and where to do it. 1: They were alone; 2: He said "With all due respect" twice and even tried to give a "preamble" which Tony brushed aside and said get to the point. Christopher for example tried to call out Tony twice in public in season 1 alone! Time and place with only two people and no witnesses. Silvio did it right, even if Tony wasn't hearing it - but he eventually caved if I remember correctly.
I didn't like at all how he disrespected a Consiglieri sit-down... because frankly, that's what you fucking hired him for. But true, he did eventually follow Sil's advice... only after all other options had failed. hahah
I would disagree with sloth and gluttony. While keeping one from having the makings of being a varsity athlete, they would contribute heavily to a short-lived 'career' as the Don...in my opinion.
@@billyboblillybob344 He had them anyway, that's why his position only lasted around 7 years before he got clipped in the restaurant as many believe, or imprisoned because of Carlo testifying.
Silvio was a real gangster, He was smart, he was extremely brave, he was tough, and he always had Tony's back, and there were a few times he called Tony out on his behavior. No he was not the leader...but he most certainly could have been and Tony knows it. He was Tony's most trusted soldier and friend. Tony knows Silvio is a King, and the realest MF'r on the planet and he loves him dearly no matter what and respects him greatly. Pride was Tony's ONLY weakness and Silvio was brave enough to make him aware of it but it was to late when he did.
This is why Silvio Dante is Tony's number 1 guy and why he's one of my favorite characters in the show! He was always respectful to Tony, but never afraid to give it to him razor straight!
Silvio has some balls to tell Tony exactly what he's thinking. And I think I saw a tiny hint of vulnerability in Tony during this scene. "And in the end, you're completely alone with it all" etc. Amazing scene, and an amazing show.
#2's in life need intelligence, courage, and discipline. #1's need charisma, confidence, and strength. They often are mutually exclusive in character but are naturally synergistic when together.
Tony not taking advice from his Consigliere shows why he was a great character but a horrible boss and the reason things ended how they did. He was a better actor than he was a Don.
@@peps7721 yes, correct. He just dont want to admit it openly. He thinks it makes him look weak, not being able to take own decisions. Its about unsecurity.
Silvio: “there are 7 deadly sins and yours is pride” Tony: “all due respect you have no fucking idea what it’s like to be #1.” Just proving Silvio right in less than 10 seconds.
Tony ruled with an iron fist which I always thought was the right way to be. Look at his crew - they're hard-ass, maniac, gangsters and his capos were straight up sociopaths with egos the size of their Cadillacs. You show the slightest bit of weakness to them and you can bet someone will try to takeover (i.e. Ralph, Phil, Richie)
rideordie Sil does have a point but he's basically talking to a brick wall. Tony clearly respects his opinion (which is why he made him consiglieri) but I think his attitude is "You may be right but I'm still going to do things my way."
A lot of his crew members were snitches. By the end of the series Carlo was going to testify against Tony and put him away for good in order to save his son from going to jail. That iron fist only got him so far.
Tony took out everyone that posed a threat to his position, which was wise, but in the end it left him vunerable because he was left with incapable soldiers, name one guy in Tony's crew who could lead after Tony's demise.
In my opinion, what made tony such a great character was his insecurities. Everyone shared that with him in one way or another, and it made people really connect with him.
Because Tony is a bad boss. He has no confidence or pride to back his power up, it's all based in fear and doubt. He's a joyless man who hates his job and bares his teeth at everybody, even his allies, because he's too stupid and confused to figure out who his enemies even are. Vito Corleone would have been aghast at what a fuck-up of a "boss" Tony was if he'd ever met him. He's got tons of violence but no capacity for love, great at producing fear but incapable of making even his own family respect him, and he makes piles of money without any honor about how he does it. He's a Crip who happens to be lighter skinned than usual, and he knows it, which is why he's miserable all the time.
@@jasoncarswell7458 I haven't commented in a long time but God fucking damn if you didn't describe Tony S like the motherless fuck he is (pun intended)
Thanks. They spent most of the first season accentuating how Tony was the "wrong boss, at the wrong time, at the wrong place", and his sudden nervous spells are simply his subconscious reminding him of the fact that he's not a good boss. Then the series got super popular and nobody liked what a whiner he was, so they banished his conscience altogether and made him a born psychopath. That's a lazy crock of bullshit because psychopaths are nothing like Tony; he's a garden-variety sociopath who's also slightly smarter than the average gang Soldier, whether that gang is made of Sicilians or blacks or Hispanics. He's "the glorified Capo of a glorified Crew", and he's doing it during the last gasp of Cosa Nostra's ability to project power in the NYC Metro area, their own birthplace. Worst part is that nobody really cares, because there's no honor or nobility in being in Cosa Nostra anymore. It's the same shit as the Russian gangs or the black gangs or a pack of jackals in the woods, purely about money and nobody will miss you or care when you're in prison. Just a conveyor belt to Hell for people with shitty abusive parents, low social skills and an inability to live a straight life without murdering or stealing from anybody. Aka, garden-variety sociopaths.
@@jasoncarswell7458Oh man! Well said. That was one of the best analogies I've read in the comments. Glad I'm not the only one who thinks Tony was dumb and prideful, terrible combination. He was an awful boss and caused the end to his 'crew'. In fact, as the series went on it became more and more obvious that Tony was just like his mother. When he kills Chris he even sounds like her when he's justifying it as Chris being better off and his family being better off without him. This is exactly what Olivia said when she and Jr. talked about killing Tony. Tony was Olivia with a penis. Though I don't think he was as intelligent as she was.
also acknowledging the fact that he could be a rat too. BS he pulled with Johnny sack from prison...hes lucky tony never found out. Paulie was one of my favorites, for his humor, not his loyalty.

Silvio is the kinda of guy one aspires to when you wanna be “quiet don”… just feed the the main guy the right information, and it’ll all play out in the end.
Reminds me of my brother. Try to talk to him (in a calm moment) about his anger and how it makes him hard to talk to/warps issues in his mind to seem one way when they are not that way.....and he gets mad. Demonstrating exactly what you are talking about but absolutely refusing to see it.
Yes, just like my sister. And she'll give you every excuse as to why she's upset, but won't do anything about it. I think being a hothead is like a part of her identity now, like Tony lol smh It's gotten her in A LOT of trouble over the years..
Ya good catch, I dont think Tony's personality would allow him to see the irony in that, when sil asks if he needs anything I feel tony gets visibly upset cause sil is shoving that"sad clown" persona right back up Tony's ass where it came from
There's something about the way Silvio says "I've known you since you were a kid, Tone." Silvio knows that as much as he could offend Tony with a comment, Tony will always remember that Silvio always was and always will be his ride or die best friend. The true definition of "the brother you choose."
I love that scary-ass, dead eyed look Gandolfini put into the character, especially knowing just how emotional of a person Tony really was (can we say AJ). Some characters you just play to the page. You act the written emotion, because that is who the character really is. But Tony was far more nuanced than that. He wasn't a true sociopath. He had emotions. His father (or should we say his mother) just taught him to bury them so deep he randomly passed out sometimes from overload. One second in this scene (when Silvio correctly said he didn't want to eat Johnny Sac's shit) he is fully engaged with his longtime friend. The next second (after Silvio hits a little too close to home), Tony slips into that dead eyed shit and tells him to piss off. JG was brilliant.
Well said. It has long since been recognized that Tony was a prisoner of circumstance, that he saw the bars at the edges of his particular cage and hated it and himself. The first half of the penultimate season, Tony's extended coma-dream, was a reflection of how much he subconsciously understood about himself and what his life could have been.
Good analysis. Glad you distinguished between socio and psycho-paths and noted that sociopaths are made that way by long, painful experience (starting in childhood), versus psychopaths who are literally born without the capacity for fear, doubt or self-hate. A psychopath is Count Dracula; he gleefully preys on you because that's what he does, and he's very good at making sure he doesn't get caught. Serial killers are overwhelmingly psychopaths, because they delight in plotting and concealing their true intent. He never had a soul to begin with, and thinks of himself as a "superhuman". A sociopath is the 14-year-old kid who beats a guy to death with a tire iron because he wouldn't give up his sneakers. He doesn't CARE if he gets caught. Dead eyes, dead soul, cigarette burns from 6 abusive foster homes and a prison tattoo on his forehead saying "FUCK THE WORLD". Nothing left inside but evil. A failed attempt at a human being. Unfortunately for Tony, he wasn't lucky enough to be born a psychopath. He's got PLENTY of emotions, they're just terribly monstrous and fucked up from a lifetime of being exposed to the ugliest, lowest parts of humanity. Tony wants to be normal but he's incapable of imagining a world where things like "having a friend" or "having a wife" mean anything less than "one more person to betray me, one more person I have to intimidate so they DON'T".
The look on tony's face when Sil was telling him what the real deal was tony just sat there and listened because Sil had hit a nerve and tony knew he was right.
No one else could have talked to Tony like that and gotten away with it. Silvio is the right hand man for a reason. Tony knows he's right and looking out for him even when he doesn't want to hear it

Brilliant writing… this episode ties into that episode

Now if You contemplate about The Sopranos you'll realise that not only did nearly every Wiseguy and Mook in the show have it,or some level of it,but that Tony B had it alot, which probably contributed to him being quite introverted and unscrupulous.
king78802 Then how do you rationalise Tony B beating the utter shit out of that Asian Man when they were in the message parlour?.

Nobody could have played a better Sil. Fantastic scene with two actors totally into their characters.
Tony acts like a hard ass, but he really respects and considers Silvio's input.
David Sharma and at this point he was practically underboss as well
He respected and understood everything he said in this scene.

Tony ruled with an iron fist which I always thought was the right way to be. +generalcrustard0311 Sil has a point here though: Tony doesn't know how to bend. Those who don't bend, break.
rideordie Sil does have a point but he's basically talking to a brick wall.

Vito Corleone would have been aghast at what a fuck-up of a "boss" Tony was if he'd ever met him. He's got tons of violence but no capacity for love, great at producing fear but incapable of making even his own family respect him, and he makes piles of money without any honor about how he does it.

For those of you who are not with me on this "that makes me sad" and it will be dealt with in time....
B Jeffrey
I need to start talking like that at MY job👍🏾
great line
Devil Dog US Marine
There’s always Burger King
@Devil Dog US Marine He's the mngr.at Mikey 'D"s 🤣great comment Devil Mutt I mean dog😞
One of the most covertly threatening lines of the series...
“Goddamn him” - about Paulie! It gets me every time! He is acknowledging that Paulie in general can be a pain in the ass!
also acknowledging the fact that he could be a rat too. BS he pulled with Johnny sack from prison...hes lucky tony never found out. Paulie was one of my favorites, for his humor, not his loyalty.
The fact that he wasn’t a real actor before this he was actually part of a band and not just any bad we all know who… Makes it even more amazing how good of an actor he was
in the end your completely alone with it all.............. best line
Foreshadows how difficult Silvio will find it when he has to assume temporary leadership.
+Footflix he has an asthma attack....
boganus699 Woah, take it easy Scorsese.
Completely agree. Silvio couldn’t even handle the top role for more than a day.
boganus699 This case is actually foreshadowing though...
@boganus699
It actually is foreshadowing, fuckknuckle.
Silvio is the only one that can talk to tony like that without fearing for his life.
Silvio is the kinda of guy one aspires to when you wanna be “quiet don”… just feed the the main guy the right information, and it’ll all play out in the end.
That last frame Tony's in you can tell he's like " Fuck Silvio, Why you always right " lol
Reminds me of my brother. Try to talk to him (in a calm moment) about his anger and how it makes him hard to talk to/warps issues in his mind to seem one way when they are not that way.....and he gets mad. Demonstrating exactly what you are talking about but absolutely refusing to see it.
Sounds like me. Im that way. Aarh, what the fuck do you even know about it you stroontz!
Yes, just like my sister. And she'll give you every excuse as to why she's upset, but won't do anything about it. I think being a hothead is like a part of her identity now, like Tony lol smh It's gotten her in A LOT of trouble over the years..
Silvio's that one guy who's kept Tony grounded.
2:35 is so sad because Tony saying he’s all alone is a major low blow to Sil, who has been by his side for everything and always would.
Ya good catch, I dont think Tony's personality would allow him to see the irony in that, when sil asks if he needs anything I feel tony gets visibly upset cause sil is shoving that"sad clown" persona right back up Tony's ass where it came from
“Illuminate me” I think he meant...”enlighten me.” LMAO Sounds like Tony is on Carmine Jr’s level.
OH! Shakespeare ova here!
Illuminate works where Enlighten does honestly sounded better. A hippie can’t say “iVe bEEN illuminated tho
You'd think he's Hannibal Lecture.
it really doesn't fucking matter
@@rudociliak6683 What a miserable specimen you are
He's the only one who was able to talk to Tony like that.
Yes, he and Uncle Junior.
Artie as well.
"Measures were taken" - Silvio D.
Michael Cera did a solid job
Tony was NEVER all alone, there’s a reason for having an advisor!!!
Silvio is the only guy on the show who could call out Tony and actually live
i love Silvio's mannerisms, its like hes turning into stone
One of the best scenes of the whole series.
You have no fuckin idea what it means to be #1
"You need me for anything else?" AKA I still know my role notwithstanding your theatrics. Awesome scene.
“I’m sorry that you fell that way”
Sil in his face trying to give him some advice but he still don’t get it
“These guys tongue” These Borko captions are more creative than Spielberg.
Silvio was my favourite, along with Furio. The facial expressions and the gestures with his hands were so funny.
"You need me for anything else ?" Perfect shot back
There's something about the way Silvio says "I've known you since you were a kid, Tone."
Silvio knows that as much as he could offend Tony with a comment, Tony will always remember that Silvio always was and always will be his ride or die best friend. The true definition of "the brother you choose."
Sylvio was the only loyal one of the bunch. Even Paulie briefly thought about killing Tony when they were on the boat.
Silvio: This is where the conversation gets… difficult.
Tony: Go
Silvio: You always had the makings of a varsity mob boss
Again with the varsity shxt, you said it again and it horts I 😢
This is gold, Legendary performance from both fackin guyzzz! RIP James.
2:04
Silvio: 7 deadly sins and yours is pride.
Lol Tony had all of em 😂😂
That's a damn good confidant, a man who you can trust to call you on your shit and is not afraid to tell you whats what
The look on tony's face when Sil was telling him what the real deal was tony just sat there and listened because Sil had hit a nerve and tony knew he was right.
No one else could have talked to Tony like that and gotten away with it. Silvio is the right hand man for a reason. Tony knows he's right and looking out for him even when he doesn't want to hear it
