In my younger days, I would always look for car show to enter my hot rods into... I never won much of anything... the guys who took home trophies always trailered their cars in and still spend hours detailing every nut and bolt. I have NEVER trailered a car to a show..I would drive it in.. spend some time knocking the bugs off the winshield and drive home... I guess my trophy was actually getting to enjoy what I built.. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it!
I haven't ridden in a 66 GTO since 1970 in El Cajon California when I was 13/14 years old. My neighbor Bob had an older brother, Ron Witek, who took me to my Little League games a couple of times and other places. He would blast Black Sabbath from his 8-track player and got me hooked on that band because everything Ron did was cool. Black Sabbath, The Wizard, Hand of Doom, Electric Funeral... Pontiac 66 GTO and the 8-track was the ultimate. I remember he got a new 8-track of a band called Atomic Rooster and left me listening to it in his car as he went inside to get something at his house. One day we were going up Avocado Blvd at a slight incline, and he floored it. WOW! My back was pinned to the seat the likes I've never felt since that day! The 1966 GTO has been my favorite ever since, because everything Ron Witek did was cool, you know.
My first "pinned to the seat" experience was in 1981 at a ripe age of 11, in my friend's brothers 1969 El Camino running an insane alcohol burning big block. We were getting a ride to basketball practice and I remember it like it was yesterday... all three of us stuffed in the bench seat, Led Zepplin Fool in the Rain blasting on the stereo, my arm hanging out of the open window, not a seatbelt in sight and us getting so sideways up the road to the school with the tire smoke just billowing out of the back...the sight, sound and smell of everything going on was the hook I needed to seek big horsepower cars.
Awe man, freaking awesome, absolutely live way the dashboard shook back and forth when you turn ignition! Bring back memories, when i was a kid and we seen a car like this we would block road until the driver did light up tires
I had a '66 as well in the early '70's; gold on gold. My God was that a pretty car. Drove it to 115,00 miles and it began to use some oil, smoke. So rather than re ring it I bought a '68 GTO, black on black. It was pretty, but man was it ever a lemon. Everything minor went wrong; usually electrical. The '66 was by far the best car I've ever owned. Very few problems. Just eased it around town for the most part. It had the most undesirable transmission, the 2-speed powerglide, and did it ever use gas! It drank leaded premium too. But very few problems with that car and many great memories. Wish I had it back!
+Dale Andrews Hi Dale, I replaced the slip and slide powerglide with a TH-350 shortly after I bought this car...best move ever. I agree, the body style and lines of the '66 are just poetry in motion. Never was a big fan of the second gen. smaller GTO's. I had the opportunity years ago to buy a '69 GTO, the price was right, but I passed...it just didn't feel right to me.
I'm watching this in the dead of winter in Canada, my '62 Biscayne all tucked away in it's garage until the snow melts and the salt is washed off the roads- four months from now. Such a long wait to take it out and look for some friends to play with. Guess I'll have to watch videos like this in the meantime...so thanks for posting! LOVE your GTO.
God Bless the Pontiac GTO. Dream car is a 66 or 67 GTO. Dad had several before I was born. He showed me pics of his when I was a child, been my dream car ever since. Thank you so much for the videos. It's good to see a classic muscle car video going out and having fun. Prius' and small cars have really changed the world. Thank you again, long live the Pontiac GTO!!
Back in the late 70s I had a 65 GTO, basically a no frills Lemans with a big appetite 389. Later had a 67 Lemans, nice luxury ride, gave it to my sister when she needed a car to haul her kids around. Wish I still had those rides.
I still have my 66 GTO, and it still rocks, I have the original 389, but i put a 455 CID w/ram air 3 heads in it and replaced the 2 speed power glyde (glide)with a turbo 400, and cruze to Ronny and the daytonas, BTW no pasenger seat cause i drive alone, and dont have to hear the misses tell me im driving to fast, lol
+John Gotti I prefer to ride alone as well. I only have an AM radio in mine...so it's just the sweet, sweet sound of the all mighty Pontiac that floats into my ears.
One of the best videos ever!! I'm 62 and have oil/trans fluid/rear end oil in my blood. This car takes me back to the days of my 66 Chevy with a 396/375 Positract and early 400 Turbohydramatic. I can feel the rush as you hammer down on this absolutely beautiful Goat. Man, what a great job. Keep up the good work! Wonderful can and a really good funny video!
Learned many years AGO DON'T LEAVE THE IGNITION IN THE ON POSITION UNLESS YOUR RUNNING, that's if still got points lol. Nice GTO, driven hard like they should be driven. Wish I had my old 66 Pontiac Lemans still, just a 326 2 barrel but that engine was very surprising for what it was. Reminds me of the the good old days back in the early 1990's when I had it.
We used to have stylized cars, stylized buildings and even stylized appliances. Now look at us. People are more interested in their coffee and their computer games.
Awesome video! I have a 1964 Ford Falcon with a V8 that I'm fixing up, it's not painted yet other than primer and there's a couple minor electrical issues that need fixing but it's getting towards being road legal. I'm so used to driving my slow ass pace arrow rv everywhere that when I had just finished fixing up the carburetor on the Falcon and I went to take it for a test drive I laid down rubber on my driveway and my landlord got pissed at me haha. It really reminds you how much power those vintage cars really have. Keep up the good videos!
I had 3 GTO's at a different points in my life, a '66, a '68, then a few yeara later I saw a '67 that I had to have. So I bought it and kept it a coule of years.
Nice car... I was home with my 20 month son and he was crying until we saw your drifts. He stopped imediately (!) as he heard the V8 drifting! Thanks man!
@@yourbeekeeper it sounded like you did it in front of a cop. if that is the case then it seems as though I just saw the stone cold steve austin of the muscle car world lol
I was given my brothers 67 Lemans when he went to Veitnam in 69.Spent 5 years trying to make it into a GTO.All my early dating history is in that car. The dash shot was such a welcomed memory. ..thanks for the great video
I am 72 years old now and have had a few cars in my time but I have to say the 65 GTO I had was definitely one of my favorites . 389 Tri-Power , 4 spd . very fast and actually with the tires back then it handled real well . I would love one now with some of the new technology and tires that would stick to the road . The 65 I had would definitely give some of the new ones a go !!!!
Robert Snow Hi Robert, This old '66 has several suspension upgrades from factory... I installed disk brake drop spindles, huge front sway bar, boxed the rear control arms and added a rear sway bar, had four coil springs custom made and upgraded from a 14" to a 15" ralley rim of course with radial tires (245-55-15). It made a world of improvement from when I first bought it. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it!
I always liked the cars that were not common. I had first gen Firebirds and Camaros, and I really love the look of the '69 RS Camaro with the headlight doors, but growing up, they were everywhere. I am also a fan of the '71 Duster, '59 Chevy trucks... oh the list goes on and on. I have had dozens of cars/trucks come an go in my life, but the GTO has staying power. I am sure I will buy and sell dozens more, but the GTO will always have a spot in my garags.
yourbeekeeper Sucks even more to be in H.S right now all my gen has access to is honda civics maybe and old crown vic but for the most part not very many choices in terms of performance.
Original 10-bolt with a race-built, bulletproof posi-trac and HD bearings. 3.55 gear ratio. Pontiac runs coil springs with four link set-up. The arms have been boxed in. This set-up has been very, very reliable and still streetable.
I bought this car in 1987 and paid $400 for it. Been sitting in a garage for 12 years and full of cats when I dragged it into the sun light. Got it running with a new battery and can of gas... drove it to a gas station two blocks away on four flat tires...Put a fresh tank of gas and got all four to hold air long enough to drive home. I knew from that moment that I would never get rid of such a great machine.
@Nascarlee Hey Lee, I used to sacre the pants of my passengers when I would get the care completely sideways and still be able to keep 'er between the lines. I love the long wheel base and power steering to finesse the car down the road. Thanks for watching.

I live in California and all the newer paints are water based base/clear. I agree, they don't have the depth the older paints used to have. I used to love to paint the old lacquer... lay on the coats and cut/polish it to a mirror shine. The paint on my GTO is bullet proof... it has taken decades of use and still shines up nice...not showroom nice anymore, but an above average driver nice.
Sir, I just want to say for starters what a gorgeous car your 66 is. While watching your video, I thought those roads looked familiar! I might have a friend for your goat. I have a 65 Post GTO being reborn here in Sonoma County. I would love to have the privileged to share pictures, stories and one day get a gathering of these beautiful cars! I'm in the Santa Rosa area. My 65 Post Coupe is up on a home built rotisserie as of this moment, getting the best cancer treatment possible.
People who have never driven or ridden in a car like this don't understand. It's a completely different experience than any other car, even modern muscle. It's such a different beast and requires such a different approach to driving, it's really amazing. Btw HUGE kudos to you for driving it the way it's meant to be driven. I can't stand people who buy these cars just wanna pussy foot around and be seen in them or think they're too precious to really drive. You are keeping the true spirit alive
Thank you , I have years of practice with this car. I have road raced this car at local tracks through the years. Making around 430 HP does not hurt either. Thanks for watching.
@MrJohndeere93 Thanks for watching. The car was auto from the factory and the automatic was more consistant when I used to bracket race. However, I have an original bell housing, flywheel, 4-speed console and pedal set-up sitting on a shelf. When this automatic finally dies, I will put a 5-speed in it.
That was fun thanks for sharing! Back in the 50s and 60s all those parking lots would be filled with hot rods, beautiful woman, and young guys. Yes they be looking at the rods rather than the woman !
Thanks for watching... I am not old enough to know the 50's and 60's...but I remember the 70's and 80's and the cruise nights with amazing hot rods, good looking girls, and food that would get brought to your car by a lady on roller skates...fun times.
I had a '66 gold/gold in the early '70's. It had Pontiac's 2 speed Powerglide tranny. The only thing about it I didn't like. Full power and air(except seats and windows). I drove it as my every day car as a college kid. This was before the oil crunch, or embargo that would come a bit later. You could buy leaded premium gas for around 30 cents a gallon! I didn't "kiddo" it or beat it, just cruised around in it like a grandma! I ran it up to 120 mph once and don't know what it's top end would be b/c it only had 120 on the speedometer. I loved that car and got many compliments on it b/c it was so damned PRETTY! It got where it was burning oil around 115,000 miles and I sold it, regretted it, and - like a lot of goat owners - wished I had it back. Ah, the memories.
I drive a Toyota 4x4 with a supercharger, 33.5 inch tires and a very loud exhaust. I love GTO's but they are a little out of my price range at the moment, so I spend all my time peeling out of parking lots and getting sideways when it rains even a little. The plan is to start hitting desert trails we have out here. I get those same looks "It's louuuuud" - it doesn't sound like a ricer, but that mostly because it's about 5 liters of petrol chugging. Someday I'll have a 1970 GTO.
Honestly,I don't keep up with current values as I have no desire to sell it. I ran the 350 because it was a direct replacement to the power glide without any modifications to anything.A very skilled transmission builder assured me he could build one to be as strong as any 400 could hope to be with the benefit of being lighter than a 400.I ran an external trans cooler, custom built torque converter (stock stall) and aside from changing the fluid have had no issues.
@Searsnut11 Thanks buddy.... I have had a long love affair with this body style. Bought this car when I was 19. Had several dozen cars in my life, and this one has survived all my hotrod phases.
@brothers0fwar It really is a different skill set to get a long car sideways, the weight and momentum to these heavy cars is tricky. I drove a 1974 Corvette for years and in that car you practically sit on the rear tires and it is super light...a whole different ball game to get those sideways and not end up looking the other direction.
Nice car and I dig your video. I've got a '69 GTO that I just had the 400 motor rebuilt with a RAIV cam, Edelbrock Performer intake and stock RA headers. Looking forward to breaking her in and turning some heads. I like your sense of humor.
If you had done that same route in 1968 or so, you would have had a few challengers to race. I know because I'm 72 and had a 65 GTO back then. I didn't lose many street races.
Thank you , I have years of practice with this car. I have road raced this car at local tracks through the years. Making around 430 HP does not hurt either. Thanks for watching.
Enjoyed your video nice car grew up around muscle cars
Glad you enjoyed it
Dang, I really like the look of the Studebaker cars and trucks... classic.
Can't wait to try this once I get home!
Thank you! I have been driving this car a LONG time and am very familiar with how it reacts.
Thank you. I put it on a tripod and seat-belted it in. Stayed in place good. Thanks for watching.
Thank you!
Thanks! You going to make any vids of your new project?
Thanks, I am hoping after the rainy season is over I will get some drive time in.
Thanks for the great comment. I will come out again here real soon. Thanks for watching.
Hopefully they will... Thank you and thanks for watching.
I swapped the powerglide for a t-350 built by a local shop that specializes in serious HP. It's very solid.
+HeroOfTheWeb Horsepower is Horsepower regardless of how many cylinders you have under the hood...it's all good!
Gotta love the sound of a muscle car, I haven't owned a carbureted vehical in atleast 10 years or more.
My pleasure, such a beautiful car!
Thank you...
That's GREAT! I am glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
It's a TH350 with a manual valve body, so I need to shift it through the gears. It was built by a local race shop and has not let me down in 20 years.
Unfortunately there are no GTO vids going to happen soon... other priorities right now. Thanks for watching.
'66 and '67 are by far the best style of GTO's
Thank you.
I was 17, and got my first classic then. A 1955 Studebaker Speedster
Nice car and I dig your video. I've got a '69 GTO that I just had the 400 motor rebuilt with a RAIV cam, Edelbrock Performer intake and stock RA headers. Looking forward to breaking her in and turning some heads. I like your sense of humor.
Your '69 should be a good runner... Hope you get some good times behind the wheel.. Thanks for watching!
Wow, that's pretty steep gears.. I wanted street-ability as well as a good hole shot so I went with these. They have worked out well. Thanks.
If you had done that same route in 1968 or so, you would have had a few challengers to race. I know because I'm 72 and had a 65 GTO back then. I didn't lose many street races.
@72oldscoupe Thanks, This is my favorite body style GTO by far.
Sporty little cars. Thanks for watching.
