  • Today I’m taking you through the process of stripping this 1966 Pontiac GTO down to bare metal prior to its restoration!
I am using a proprietary 3 step process
Step 1 paint removal in an alkaline bath.
Step 2 rust removal in an acid bath.
Step 3 applying a water based rust inhibitor.
After every acid dip the car is neutralized in our alkaline to stop from flash rusting.

Dipping a body and sheet metal is worth every penny it cost to dip . A buddy had his 59 El Camino dipped and wow it was in such great shape . When we picked up the El Camino there was a 55 Baby Bird that looked awesome to us , but the owner thought it was a piece of junk just because of a couple of pin hole rust spots . Interesting thing about the Baby Birds , the front sheet metal is brazed onto the body when they were manufactured as we saw on the body . Awesome video .

I have had numerous bodies and parts chemically stripped using this process. I highly recommend it BUT you must have the body/ parts e coated after the dipping process. As mentioned in previous posts the areas that are not readily accessible by the normal spray primer process have to be protected from future corrosion. The e coat treatment gets into all the areas that spray primer cannot. Do it right or don’t do it at all!

I know paint stripping and rust removal is your thing, but it would be nice to see a follow-up on a few of the more interesting cars further down their restoration process.

If the owner is going for a stock rebuild, the factory markings were visible on the firewall after the first dip. You might let the owner know so they can replicate them.

I love watching your videos. I'm not sure where you are from but I'm in Pittsburgh, PA and I've never seen cars dipped and cleaned without much rust. None of my 1960's cars would have come out of the dip. I think all that would have survived most of my cars would be the roof,A pillar and B pillars

In 1990, I restored a 1958 Chevrolet Apache pickup 3/4 ton with a custom chrome package that the factory installed. It came with a 348 and a four-speed transmission. It had 19 layers of paint, I would have killed for something like this. This. It took 2 years of sanding to get it all off.

So many questions but honestly fascinated by the process.

Its an interesting processes and chemical stripping is a good way to get to the bottom of things quickly. My question is how do you access the parts of the body that aren't exposed? Wont this cause flash rusting and further rusting to the areas of the body that are difficult to reach?
