What a delightful video! I’ve been looking into vacuum filler pens for a little while now. The info was quite useful. Thanks, Chris! That is my favourite filling system at the moment. We'll see. I have two new filling systems on the way; the Penbbs 500 (spring) and the Penbbs 492 (magnetic piston).
The PenBBS of coarse is my favourite. They are a better feel in the hand and I’ve three of them which I love. The experience I have when using it is a joy I have the others and I don’t dislike any. The finishes on the PenBBS are lovely.

I think the penbbs pen is my favorite. A nice clear demonstrator that looks like it's great quality. Though the blue and gold on the wingsung 699 is great.

Aloha Doug! Excellent comparison. I own the Wing Sung 3013 and I thought it was fine, but wished the nib was of better writing quality. I have the 3013 in purple, or what I call 'pelikan amethyst on a budget" as well as a Pali in Blue. Even without the plunger sealing the reservoir, the O-ring on the section does a good job of keeping your shirt clean. It's so airtight, the ink doesn't dry out if you don't use it for a long time. One thing about these two, the 3013 was easy to remove the nib and feed while I couldn't get the Pali to budge. I replaced the nib with a Wing Sung clone's in gold color which makes the amethyst even look better.

I have the same PenBBS 456 and it writes absolutely beautifully. Feels good in the hand, posts firmly and is definitely one of my favorite writers. I would put my favorite ink, Birmingham Andy Warhol Pop Art Purple. This ink looks great in demonstrators and looks great on paper. I really enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing.

Professore..i prefer the Pen BBS.. just looks like a better pen all around.. love your guitar.. I had thumb surgery in December and cannot press down on frets yet.. still learning and cannot afford losing practice!! Be well Doug!

Great video! The 456 would definitely be my choice. Having 36 varieties to choose from is awesome, but I'd probably choose the 'clear glass' model as well.
If I won the 3013, I'd fill it with Noodler's Red Black.

Penbbs is the best amongst the lot writes very well and has the features of a premium pen
Thanks Doug. Good tip about the difference between 3013 and the other two, which have 'airplane mode' which close off the ink chamber from the nib.
Some people think the 3013 is superior BECAUSE it doesn't have the shut off valve.
I have several 3013 and mine have all written fine out of the box. I don’t have the other two but the 699 is gorgeous so I’ll make that my pick
Yeah that 699 is beautiful. I don't think I've seen a Pilot 823 in that blue finish.
Nice comparison video. The only one of these I own is the Wing Sung, which I love. I have noodlers Massachusetts 54th in it. It is a real workhorse pen for me.

Penbbs 456 is my favorite. Noodlers Lexington grey is the ink I would put in the 3013 since it is such a wet writer. First and hopefully not the last time here because your production skills are on point.

Good comparison! Thanks for the oportunity. I think the pen bbs would be my fovourite out of the pens it just seems to be of better quality. I have none of the brands. If i won i would put Diamines Communication Breakdown in it would be nice to se the red splashing around.A new fovourite of mine.

The only of those three I have is the 699 and I love it! It writes nicely regularly and in reverse so I get two line widths for sketching. And if I bring it somewhere to sketch I certainly don't have to worry about running out of ink! So, it may be boring, but I would probably put Noodler's Black in it. Maybe my R&K Emma Sketch Ink. It would look more interesting in the clear one and can be watercolored over.
What colour is yours? Noodler's Black has to be the most popular black on the planet.

Gotta say, I love the 699. Got it in black with opaque section and golden details. Looks classy, feels nicely weighed and writes like a dream. I'll be taking it on a plane in few weeks so I'm curious how well it seals.
I'd be interested to hear how it works for you. I haven't seen to many comparisons between the WS 699 and the Pilot 823. The 699 is certainly a beautiful looking pen and a great size.

@@InkquiringMinds the Ebay selling called it Wing Sung 3013 however. I do recall seeing Paili in the description information of some pens I was looking at. It is possible I purchased that one in the end. I still enjoy the pen. To be honest, the colour did it for me. I'm a sucker for purple 😂
@@andrewtuck77 eBay can be a jumble of confusion and misinformation. I bought what was described as a Jinhao and ended up being just a pile of trash with no Jinhao labelling at all.

I also have all three of these vac fillers. Although I really enjoy the 456, my favorite of the three is my 699 in blue like yours. It just feels really good when I'm writing. Because I fly a lot, the 3013 couldn't come with me and I just didn't like the feel of it as I wrote.

Wing Sung 699 for color is my favorite. However a great blue/purple would make the 3013 nice to look at too!
The blue 699 is really quite a good looking fountain pen. I just bought a new Penbbs 308 in the same transparent blue with gold trim.
Great comparison! I have the Wing Sung 3013, the PenBBS 456 and the PenBBS 268. I would Rate them about the same as you did and put the 268 a small step above the 3013. I keep my 456 full of Cult Pens Philip with a Architect ground nib. For a good fix for the 3013 get a Stainless Steel Metric screw to replace rusted one inside the cap.
That's a good tip CJ! Thanks! I'm really surprised they still put a regular screw in there after all the problems with the 3008. I never bought a 268 as I'm not fond of #5 size nibs.
@@InkquiringMinds The 268 uses the same #6 PenBBS nibs. They are just Friction fit and no Nib unit like their other pens.
Another enjoyable video Doug! Have the 456 and the 699, which are more than enough vac-fillers for me. The 699 works best for me, it seems to fit and balance in my hand as it makes my writing look much better. I see that you are a Jack Reacher fan by the book on your desk. Did you hear that Lee Child is going to hand it over to his brother to write? Have you tried the Joe Pickett series from C.J. Box? Another great one. Keep those videos coming!

Doug, thanks for this video. My favorite is the Wing Sung 699 because of the Blue colour and Gold trim. WOW!!!! Gorgeous Pen. If I were to win the Wing Sung 3013 I would probably ink it up with de Atramentis "Sherlock Holmes" Night Blue, which is a very nice blue almost black ink, in my humble opinion. The 3013 would be a nice addition as I do not own a clear demonstrator Pen. Yes I know Shame on me. Keep up the great work.
Hey, Daniel! I know right? Isn't that a beautiful pen? It is almost more beautiful than the Platinum 3776 Chartres Blue! ~checks out the Sherlock blue~ That's a cool colour. It almost looks like a blue/green/black. This 3013 is value-added since I tuned it up myself to write nicely! :) Good luck to you!
Doug, The Sherlock Holmes ink is now in a pen from the Sherlock Holmes detective Agency, a gift I received from a friend at Christmas.

This off topic but the fact that Dan Fogelberg has been left out of the Hall of Fame is a deep injustice. Loved seeing him live each and every time. Brilliant multi threat musician. The 456 has been a great pen for me. The Pilot 823 is far and away the best writer I own due in large part to Pilot's great gold nib.
I agree, but it is apparently a matter of taste. To some, Fogelberg only had two hits: Leader of the Band and Same Old Lang Syne.

The Penbbs 456 is my favourite - I have 3 of them - and sadly I'm having difficulties with the 3013 - it keeps drying out for me if I don't use it every day :( However, it can be filled fully, which is a plus! I'd put a nice blue ink, since that's the office colour that's fine for everyone!
Hey, Nya! I agree 100% with your choice. What three finishes to you have (he asked considering which will be my next 456). You gotta please the OFFICE no doubt. If your 3013 is drying out, that means that moisture is escaping through the top of the cap (and around that screw) as the cap to the barrel is sealed with an O ring.
@@InkquiringMinds Hm, thanks for the tip! I even replaced the screw since it rusted within a week. I presumed it is drying out due to the lack of a cap liner, but since the clip wiggles a tad now, maybe I need to find a different screw. As for the finishes, I have the Unobtainium Niangao, the Autumn, and the Symphony (and I blame the excellent Aaron for that!). I am kicking myself for not getting the pen rest in the Symphony when I had the chance… and the 355 in Smog... but that's another story! :D Imho, get the Symphony out of the three - it's beyond beautiful.
Yes, Symphony is a gorgeous finish. But, in a 456 it is as rare as hen's teeth!

I have a PenBBS 456 (Autumn finish) with a fine nib and I mostly use it during fall with Diamine Autumn Oak. I think it's my best modern vac fill pen which looks gorgeous and also writes very nicely. But I also have a vintage Sheaffer Lifetime vac fill and I think that one is even more beautiful and writes a tad better. So the PenBBS is the vac pen for autumn and the rest of the year it'll be the Sheaffer competing with the non-vac pens.

That same Wing Sung 699 is now available as a piston filler as well.
My favourite is the PenBBS 456, the ink I would use is the J. Herbin 1670 Emerald of Chivor, a bueatiful pen with a elegent ink.

I have a wingsung 698 (M) and just got a wingsung 3013 (EF). And I like the extra fine a lot better but really like the 698, can I swap the nibs? Thx!
I don't have a 3013 but I doubt the nibs between the 698 and the 3013 are compatible.

My favorite of the bunch would have to be the 456, since I own two of them (nothing if not loyal). I'd probably use Cross Blue-Black, for no real reason other than it seems to be a good color for an EDC pen.

Would you happen to know if one of the current Wing Sung companies is a descendent of the Wing Sung that made pens in the 90's? From that era I have two 765's I really like.
As far as I can tell, there are two Wing Sung pen companies. One is a maker of less expensive student model pens and they make the Wing Sung 3008 piston filler. Then there is the higher end Wing Sung that make the Wing Sung 699 Vacuum filler (great pen). I've also heard it said that Wing Sung (perhaps both divisions) are sub companies of the great Hero pen company that's been around since 1931 and is consider the Parker pen company of China. I have no definitive information that any of this is true since it is all drawn from the internet.
Doug I know I am very late to the party - non the less I enjoyed your shootout. I have both of the wingsung pens but not the 456 from Penbbs. Interesting your experience and thoughts about the 699. I have two and both are wonderful and very smooth in my hand. I did not have to tune either nibs on my 699's (maybe I got lucky). I totally agree with your thoughts on the 3013 though - they're not bad considering the price but of the two I have one has a nib that is not bad and the other one I will need to tune as the tines are not properly aligned. Guess I will have to look for a 456 and give that a try. Side not I got the Moonman M800 in the galaxy blue and it is absolutely stunning and I really like the way the Moonman nib writes - very nice. Keep up the great video's.

My favourite is the PenBBS. It's a Chinese company that produces great pens and continually innovates to improve their systems. Hope to fill the pen with Alt Goldgrun! :)

I've never heard of the "Blue Eel". Does it behave well? I have a couple of Noodlers and they can be nasty.
@@InkquiringMinds No feathering, no ghosting, little bleed or ink spread even in composition notebooks. Dry time can be problematic on Tome River or Rhodia. Clean up has been easy for me and no staining yet...

I picked mine up the other day to write with after a few months. Wrote first time. Beautiful pen. Nicely balanced.
The only one I'm missing in my collection is the 456, I never got around to getting one but I did get 3 different 699's and 2 3013's, so if I win I'll have a completed collection like you !

theres something that nobody does but i wish more people would do is with these systems i kinda wish they would show what it looks like to expel ink throuogh the feed back into a bottle to see what that looks like the reason for this is i like to change inks alot with the same pen especially if i think its a smoothe writer and so im wondering what the cleaning process is like

I did not watch this until today; however, I have a question I would not have asked originally. I purchased at least 2 of the 3013 pens, and one broke almost immediately. The rod that runs from the sealing end to the cap broke off at the cap. It looked to me like it was never solid. Perhaps it was just a bad experience with one pen, but have you heard of others with this problem?
I've not heard of that particular problem with that model before. But at that price point, just get another.
I agree, and (of the two I purchased) only had the one problem. I do prefer the Wing Sung 699 though.
@@keithwhitney7491 I have two Penbbs 456 and one Wing Sung 699. I prefer the 456 as it feels better in the hand and posts more securely. But the Wing Sung 699 is an awesome pen for the money. They've come out with a piston-filler version as well.
I like the 699 however I wonder how well the plastic will hold up over time.
Not, as I suspect, as well as turned acrylic resin. But, on the positive side, they aren't that expensive so getting another is relatively easy.

I'm having a lot of trouble due to the nature of FDM printers and I don't have an SLA one..
I'm from Iran too so it's very hard to find oring or rubber seals sadly. But I had an amazing idea.
I cut up a syringe's handles and tomorrow I'm gonna resize the pen so I can push this inside of it. And have it be the surface the oring slides on. So there's no friction created by the layer lines :)

I have 2 wing sung 3013s one has a medium nib the other has a Pilot Plumix cm stub nib. The feed has some issues but I "fixed" it. The clear would look good on Diamine "china blue ". the vac filler 3013 works well, and it is a cheap pen.
It is extraordinarily inexpensive for the amount of pen you get.
I'm OK with my 3013. Got it online (Lazada) for the equivalent of $4.55. Did I pay too much? I don't know, I only buy what I can. Takes a lot of ink, writes well enough for my needs, just motors along. I can set it aside for a few days, and when I pick it up and use it, it is ready to go.
OK, to be fair, after watching your review, I unwrapped my other Wing Sung 3013, the one I've been keeping as spare.
It won't take in as much ink and it isn't as smooth as the first one. It doesn't maintain the vacuum as well, and for some reason, although they're both "F" nibs, it writes a narrower line. Maybe a feed issue.
So, the quality is inconsistent. Caveat emptor.

I like the 3013 Pali. Works well, loads easily and is very, very cheap. Ink Parker Quink.
What colour do you have? It IS very very cheap but not cheap as in flimsy cheap. I'm surprised they can produce this quality of a pen at this price. You have SO many choices with Quink... black, blue black, blue...

PenBBS 456 definitely, it's made of acrylic and not plastic and you can really feel the difference.
I agree, Michael. It is impossible to tell in photos or video, but in your hand, you can really feel the difference between injection molded plastic and turned resin.

I don't have that PenBBS model (my only PenBBS vac fillers are a pair of 268s). I have a couple of Wing Sung 699s of which I cleverly decided to drop one onto a tiled floor & shear off the cap finial. I have multiple Wing Sung 3013s and three Paili 013s. I like the 699 the most out of that set, if I can keep in mind that it's a pen rather than a basketball & shouldn't be bounced repeatedly against the floor. My WS3013s have been a mixed bag. Some worked first time, some had shocking flow issues and some were in the middle ground. Oddly enough, all three of the Pailis seem stable thus far. Realistically I think vac fillers are a fun novelty for me but I couldn't see me using them for EDC. Too much of a worry that I would be characteristically stupid and dump ink all over myself (again). I have no such concern with piston fillers, of which the WS 698 wins hands-down for me, followed by the WS 3011, a pen that I feel is too often overlooked and has much to offer.
You should give a 456 a try. I feel it is a more substantial pen than the Wing Sung 699 even though I love my 699!

All three are nice, but the PenBBS 456 wins because the cap band won't break (as the 699 could), and it posts unlike the 3013.
Hey IrishGuy! Those are excellent points. It is one of the concerns about the model 480 as well. I love the look but I'll keep an eye on that acrylic edge.
What part is cap band?
I don't have the 699 but of the other two I find the 3013 is better than the 456, but both are bad.
My 456 has a problem with the rubber vacuum seal detaching from the plunger and wedging itself sideways in the section. This seals off inkflow and requires disassembly to rectify. It then does it again next time you screw the plunger rod out and in.
The 3013 either has too large a vacuum seal, or too small a chamber to release the vacuum. It does cut off ink flow when screwed down fully, but when you unscrew it ink has difficulty flowing around the plunger head.
I'll stick to my Onoto's, they knew how to make a working plunger filler 100+ years ago.

Douglas Rathbun...Ha, I sure noticed that. It was such a straight-forward choice, really. Now, the one Chinese pen I badly want to have soon is the Penbbs 355 Bulkfiller. I forgot to thank you for a very fun review, as always.
My two Penbbs 268 pens arrived cracked at the grip. Apparently, inserting the nib at the factory broke the grip. Both leak at the grip, which makes them junk. Pity, the filling system is pretty good. I won't be buying any more Penbbs pens because of their poor material and nonexistent quality control coupled with prices that should assure the buyer of a well-made pen. I performed a CA glue repair. My vac fill pens are 1950's Sheaffers and they blow away these Chinese pens as to materials, quality control and performance. I wonder what the folks at Fort Collins knew that no one else was privy to?
If you purchased your Penbbs from Beini at the official Penbbs store on Etsy, she's pretty good about replacing defective or broken pens. I love those old Sheaffers with the inlaid nibs.
@@InkquiringMinds Thank you Douglas. I think I got the pens from an Ebay reseller. Yes, the Ft. Collins Sheaffers are the cat's whiskers. There was obviously a protracted design stage in the fashioning of these pens. They were my introduction to fountain pens-Mom had a Snorkel that fascinated me. For some reason I could see the art in beautiful handwriting and associated it with culture, education and attainment. You have a great channel, are a musician and a soft spoken authority.

The only real drawback is the Penobscot 456 is only available in the “fine” nib; no matter where I search they’re only available in a fine nib, NOT GOOD,
They are available, just not for long because everyone snaps them up in hours. The best way to solve that problem is to buy the $5 "nib charm" in medium and replace the nib on your fine 456.

the Wing sung 3013 is the worst pen i ever bought
It is certainly not the worst pen I've ever purchased. It write and the vacuum filler works well. It is not in the same quality league as the 456 or the 699 IMO.
