  • I blame Neil Gaiman for my interest in fountain pens. This is a review of a knock-off of one of Neil's favorite pens.
    For some great detail and direct comparisons of the 699 and the 823, I highly recommend this video from Doodlebud: • Hidden SECRETS: Wing S...

    Yes, the QC is lacking. My first 699 had the rod put in bent. Not sure how they managed to do that. It still sucks up ink fine, but because it's bent, it doesn't seal the chamber. But otherwise I like it. It's cheap, so we can't expect perfection. But after buying my 823, I never actually use the 699 anymore. Nor any of my other pens, to be honest. The 823 is just perfection.
    Doodlebud has a video comparing the two if you haven't see it. He takes them both apart and looks at them from his engineering perspective. Well worth watching.

      Thanks for the heads up. I follow Doodlebud but must have missed that one. Looking forward to checking that out. I've heard more QC issues with the nib.. having a bend rod?! yikes.

      That Doodlebud video is amazing, I decided to include that in the description of this video. Thanks!

    Nice review. Thanks. Regarding knockoffs, imitations, influenced by, etc.. Why should the fountain pen industry be different than any other industry. Everywhere I look I see that happening in the auto industry, kitchen appliances, and even the shirt I am wearing.

      Definitely. And not everyone can afford the high-end price tag for the premium version of something. I still want the real thing, but not sure when spending that much on 1 pen will make sense for me.

    The Chinese Fountain pens companies have stepped up their quality. Chrisrap52 does a lot of Chinese cheap fountain pens reviews on his you tube videos and he has found a lot of them pens he enjoys using. JG3 also reviews some Chinese Fountain pens and as he commented on the pen "it's just a pen 🤣".
    Thanks for the review and welcome to the wonderful fountain pen community. Keep up the good work 😃😃

      There's nothing wrong with knock off pens as long as you know it's a knock off pens. It's just a pen and a writing instrument to use vs ballpoint, gel, rollerball, felt tip and liquid needle point tip pens. So each to their own preference of writing instruments to write with on paper.
      I just enjoy the fountain pen effortless ink flow when it works .
      I also enjoy the ink shading, sheening (even though I don't have any in my collection of ink bottles) properties in some ink formulation.
      Besides its more environmentally friendly than buying a pen every few months 😀.
      P.S. I hate those Bic ballpoint pens or any ballpoint pens that you need go scribble on a scrap paper 🤣 to get it as started and the small barrels.
      Pilot do make nice pens besides their fountain pen line 😂 up
      ( precise, G2, frixion, B2B pens etc).

      Thank you. Yes, I'm fairly new to the fountain pen world and I'm a big fan of Chrisrap52, JG3, Inkquiring Minds, Figboot, SBRE Brown, and a few others. There is really so much great info here on UA-cam. I was looking for a "Master List" of Chinese fountain pens, since those are more in my price range, and that lead me to my latest video: ua-cam.com/video/_5VTfqoaEqY/v-deo.html hopefully it can be of help to people.

    A lot of people have recommended this pen to me! I have yet to try one but I'm going to look into the differences between the piston filler one and the vac filler! I feel more accustomed to piston fillers generally!
    Thank you for mentioning that Neil Gaiman's work has been made into movies and series ... The Sandman series sure looks interesting!

      I forget if you have a Pilot 823.. if you don't, I would recommend this pen (either vac or piston). If you DO have a Pilot 823, this pen won't hold a candle to it. For me, it is definitely one I would purchase again, hands down. As far as Neil Gaiman, I would recommend the movie Star Dust. It has a "Princess Bride" type feel to it, but with distinct Gaiman vibes. His style can be a bit dark for some, so it isn't for everyone. However, Star Dust is a good fit for almost anyone. The Graveyard book is also a book I would recommend to anyone, including the audio book read by Neil. Thanks Chris!

    Couple things. first the nib is absolutely NOT swapable. Wingsung uses their own size nibs which are a few millimeters shorter than a standard #6 nib. This is a common misunderstanding.. one person said it on reddit once, everyone just followed that advice, but no one bothered to actually check.. You can Frankenstein a jowo(for example) on there. but it wont work well and will hang off the end quite a bit..
    You can also just unscrew the top section of the pen and eyedropper filler it.. that way you dont have to worry about the fuss of the mechanism, and you always get a complete fill.

    One thing no one ever seems to talk about is how the valve seal actually doesn’t work as intended. The section inner diameter is wider diameter than the valve seal so it never seals up. It’s a defective copy.

    • @KendallW
      @KendallW  4 місяці тому

      You know, I think mine used to seal off when I first got it. Lately though, yeah, it doesn't seem like it seals 100% - I thought it was just my pen. Good to know!

    I had bad luck with this pen, the threads in the cap cross thread all the time. Otherwise, good looking pen.

    I've a WingSung 9133... which had o-rings, so I jumped the 'filler' and just drop the ink into the body with a syringe (just plastic, no needle).
    Apart from the fact that it writes well, is that I can leave it for 2 months, pick it up and write... as I misplaced one of three which I have.

    I bought some. Also with 14k gold nibs. Cost less the 75$ (bargain opportunity).
    For me, it is a fair compromise as all write very nice. Compromise - almost no nib options other then fine or xf.

      Excellent point to bring up, this is a way to utilize a gold nib without breaking the bank. Thanks

  • @Druuj

    If you are gonna use a syringe to fill the little container, why not open the pen and drop the ink directly in? why the extra step? this kind of pen is a natural eyedropper.

    • @KendallW
      @KendallW  6 місяців тому +1

      I was using the syringe to fill it like an eye dropper vs using the vacuum filling mechanism. I don't mind vac filling but sometimes it's just easier to eye dropper in my opinion.

  • @user-youshithandler

    sometime this pen starts writing. it's just crap. you built up all the piston filler system, then the nib writes like shit? just put a cartridge and make it starts writing properly.

    • @KendallW
      @KendallW  11 місяців тому

      I actually quite like the nib on this pen. If there were a cartridge converter option I would definitely prefer it. Vacuum and piston fillers have a lot of capacity but that's not really what I need.
