    I recently got a pack of 3 of these for under 20 bucks and all three nibs are wonderfully smooth extra fine nibs. My art is based mainly on very fine dense detail linework and these are a real surprise. I thought they might be fun pens to try but I never thought they'd be so perfect for what I do. I'm thrilled with my purchase.
    Wonderful review, as always, Chris. Thanks!

    Just got the same pen in the Paili 013. Great review! Mine will probably stain, as I filled it with Noodler's red black, but I plan to use it, not keep it on a pedestal under a glass case, so not really worried about the staining. The second one is going to be filled with blue ink, so that one might not stain. Only time will tell...

      More reds seem to stain, from everything I've read, but I like the Noodler's red black, and have it in several pens, now. Of course, it's my only ink besides a basic, cheaper black (Thornton's Luxury Goods.) I am getting a bottle of Waterman Mysterious Blue, so I'll be up to 3 different colours. I'm pretty basic in my ink needs. 😉

    Great review as usual, Chris.
    What are your thoughts on the WS 3013 compared with the Penbbs 456? There are many variants of the 456, which range between AU$60 and AU$120, while the 3013 can be had for as low as AU$6. Following your reviews, I have both and they feel comparable in my amateur hands, but considering the price differential, the Wing Sung would appear to knock the Penbbs out of the park.

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  5 років тому +2

      The 3013 is a Great value but may not have the longevity of the 456. The inner rod of the 3013 appears to be plated which will corrode. The 456 is solid stainless steel. The 456 is turned acrylic, the 3013 is injection molded, can be prone to cracking. The 456 comes in many more exotic finishes. Based on your pricing you can get 10 - 3013s for the least expensive 456. I expect 10 will outlast 1. Which one makes you happier?

    So cool, I can get the 3013, rebranded to Paili 013 for US$3.93 w/ delivery to doorstep (still thinking of buying it but I know I will get addicted to collecting fountain pens, I'm trying to find a reason to buy for work, maybe help w/ art stuff for another color:-). I hope one day refillable fountain pens that write well, would match US$0.20 cents like the best writing ballpen, the Standard BPM 0.7 (smoother than a G2 and any of Pilot's legendary rollerball and ballpens).
    I heard Wing Sung nibs rust? Is this true? Is the nib solid stainless steel or plated? I'm new to fountain pens, just got my very first one a few days ago (aluminum Ohto Proud customized with "The Great Wave Off Kanagawa" (silkscreened + hand sprinkled with gold)- I love writing with it, on my custom made/prototype onion skin, small notebook (just noodling, to relax).
    Onion skin is the smoothest, next to photo paoer (if one manages to start writing on photo paper- I hope they invent a cheap as regular cheap paper photo paper but for now that'd be the onion skin paper).
    Thank you. God bless, Proverbs 31

    Trying to coax mine into actually filling up via vacuum. After some experimentation, I've learned it's leaking from the movable piston head area. Silicone no help, so put a bit of RTV in the hole that piston rod extends through. If this fails, I suppose I'll shape some new piston ring material (and remember to order a couple of extra when I buy ultra-cheap pens in the future.)

      I'd thought about that. There is no rubber end to the piston like PenBBS uses to seal off feed but piston might seal section. Haven't needed to open blind cap to write like I do with 456 & 355. Will look at this closer with next 3013's I get.

    Hello , Mr.Chris. Would you lend me your knowledge? Why is Wing Song 698 10 times more expensive than Wing Song 3013? Are they made of different materials?
    I'd like to swap pilot stub nibs for Chinese piston fillers...

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  3 роки тому +2

      Good question. Both injection molded plastic. They feel the same. The 3 digit Wing Sungs are considered better quality that the 3 digit models. The 698 has always been a high price pen, $17 USD while the 3013 can be $2.50 USD. A have a few 698 EDC. Have used for years. None of my 3013s are inked, drying out issues. I like the 698 more, the nib is "special quality". Many consider the vac-filler to be a higher quality filling system. Price doesn't reflect that.

    Thanks for another great review. I also got one of these 3013s and enjoy writing with it. But I'm disappointed that on my pen, the piston rod doesn't seal the ink chamber at the end. When it's screwed all the way down, I can easily see daylight between the piston and the chamber. Does your pen do this or did I get a defective one?

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  5 років тому +1

      My understanding, it is not designed to seal. One of the features left off to meet a price point. I find my 456s & 355s need to be opened up to write after sitting for a few days. So far this pen writes all the time. The shut off feature is not one I need.

  • @SlimTony

      Not typical based on my experience. Mine has been inked & in use since this video. No ink in section. Would not call it nib assembly as I could not remove it. I see on o-ring at nib end of silver insert assume one at to near barrel. Maybe on your top o-ring not sealing & ink is getting between section & silver insert. No fix as far as I know. @@chrisrap52 Yeah I'm having the same issue with mine, it has a really small o-ring near the end and I'm probably going to seek out some tiny, thin o-ring to pop onto it, or put some sort of sealing slicone there to keep it from sucking up ink.
      edit: I'm back, and it's not the seal at the bottom of the silver section--it pops out easily and there's a little part at the end that's cut on an angle, vs flat and straight, where it would snap in cleanly. So it's sucking up through the outer part of the section vs the inner part of the section.

      @@chrisrap52 Hi Chris, thanks for your reply. I am no stranger to fountain pens - been using them since I've been 5 years old (almost 40 now) - this is my first time when I had a feed break on me.
      Could be that mine was a dud... maybe the feed was faulty from the beginning. Once I removed the other half that was stuck in the section, I noticed it had another crack line and basically it was half broken as well. Truth to be told, these feeds seems to be way too small and brittle I find - but that is just my opinion.
      The Wing Sung 3001 (the 78G copy) feed will not work in this one (because of the same nib, I was hoping the feeds will be the same) - the thin, long end of the feed is thicker on the 3001. I looked to see if there are replacement feeds, and I have found a seller... had a good chuckle - the feed cost just as much as a new pen :D.
      Anyway, sorry for the long post, hopefully mine was a dud and no one else has this issue. I might look into its bigger brother, the 699. I have seen your review on it and the nib and feed seems to be more robust than this one.

      Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the nuances of inexpensive Chinese pens. It is amazing that it is sometimes less expensive to buy another pen that to buy parts. The impact of volume on pricing vs. a small number of parts. I enjoy this market and all its unique qualities.

    Thanks for the review, I have this one, too, and it's really not bad. Can I be critical for a sec? You rate a pen at some arbitrary high value 9.2 (which is kind of your default), and then discover that you have to fix the nib (which you don't like in the first place, it being Pilot-style), and then you admit on-camera that you didn't enjoy writing with the pen until you spent a bunch of time doing nibwork. So what in the world does 9.2 mean? If a pen with a wonky nib which doesn't write well gets a 9.2, it means zilch. I find your whole numerical rating thing fairly comical anyway, but this video is a great example of how comical it is. Please try to rate these pens objectively, or simply can the whole rating thing, which has become so inflated as to be meaningless. Honestly: how many pens go below 8.5 in these videos? I can't think of a single one.

      Viewers asked me to rate pens. I use the checks to indicate what rating is based on. This pen is very well made & a great bargain, that = 9.2. Nibs can be adjusted or swapped. I guess I've been getting good pens lately.

      @@chrisrap52 I appreciate that your viewers want some form of rating. OTOH, you also gave a 9.2 to the Moonman N2, which you start off my saying was a disappointment. 9.2 seems to mean, "it didn't fall apart in my hands after a couple of days of writing". Since so many of the criteria you use pertain specifically to the nib (wetness & flow, hard starts, etc.), I don't necessarily buy your argument, but hey, it's your channel. :-) Anyway, I didn't want to be extra-snarky about it, I just noticed that the ratings appear to be pure fantasy, and that's ok. I personally would find an overall rating "great value for the money"/"average value for the money"/"save your money" more useful than 9.2 on a scale of 9 to 9.8, but reasonable people can disagree.

    Ручка красивая, перо хорошо шлифовано, но подача сухая. Резиновый поршень плохо сделан - имел облой, который мешал нормально заправлять чернила. Пришлось разобрать ручку и доработать поршень. Шток поршня из дешёвой стали, плохо хромирован и вскоре покрылся ржавчиной. А ржавчина меняет цвет чернил! :(

    Obviously, this is a Knockoff TWSBI Vac 700r. Although the low price is really tempting, i'll stick with the original. Why can't WingSung develop their own Design, like Jinhao for example did with the X750?

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  5 років тому +2

      Not a knockoff. Shares some design elements. If they branded it as a TWSBI then it would be a knockoff.

    • @Turbostiewen
      @Turbostiewen 5 років тому +2

      You're right. But most design elements are TWSBI here. Chinese manufacturers make well made pens. Wouldn't it be great if they would develop their own, unique design?

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  5 років тому +4

      There are many unique pens made in China. There are also some that resemble other pens. Design influence is very common in the commercial industry. I look at a pen for what it is, not what it might resemble.
