Amber Mozo is a 22-year-old photographer born and raised on the North Shore of Oahu. As the daughter of legendary surf photographer Jon Mozo, a former fixture in the lineups along the famed North Shore, Amber was raised with a love for both the ocean and photography.
Jon Mozo passed away while shooting photos in the water at Pipeline - he was 33 years old. Amber was only 9. Soon after her father’s passing, Amber picked up a camera and her photographic journey began.
While photography has taken Amber all around the world, shooting some of the most beautiful known surf breaks, until this winter, she hadn’t yet swam out into the lineup that stole her father’s life - Pipeline. This winter, however, under the tutelage of fellow North Shore surf photographer, Zak Noyle, Amber swam into the Pipeline lineup for the very first time during the 2018 Volcom Pipe Pro.

Is like the cameraman that follow Bear Grylls
Such an amazing daughter, your father would be so proud!
So refreshing to see a comment section on a video about a woman of power doing something out of passion and none of the comments are about her looks. All focused on the beauty and power of the content. Beautiful.
So powerful, i felt the intense emotions she must have had facing that wave while just sitting here on my couch, so brave girl and very creative video production... BRAVO!!!
Everything about this story is wow-factor, that title and the last sentences hit hard
That was amazing I would never have the Courage to do that
omg this is so beautiful
This is something like more than a dream
Where is this at? I wanna go? I from phila need to see this up close.
it seems like its never sunny there. always cloudy
Class video
Where does this take place
I would pay to see this made into a movie.
you should watch point break (2015)
Mutiny 1855 you always pay to see movies
ELfuego exactly what i was thinking

That story is worth a complete documentary.
Alan Preciado Grijalva easily
Alan Preciado Grijalva agreed
There is a really touching documentary on Jon Mozo
Or a movie
gotta be honest here that would be one dragged out and boring documentary
No matter how good of a waterman you are, the ocean will always win. She demands your respect, or she’ll just take it from you.
Mano Stant somehow I read waterman as watermelon at first lmao
Peter Pan everyone knows this. It’s Mother Nature, and all boats are a she which is unrelated but it’s just what it’s called
that’s cringy as fuck dude
@@louisrussell1390 you dont even know what cringe is bruh. watch some failed handshake videos
Ew
"being in his place made me understand why he let this place take his life" wow.
But why tho?
michael rogers what she was saying is it’s beautiful and worth it, I’m sure that’s what every big wave surfer will tell you cause they know there life is on the line most of the time
@@jordaneglis7380 thanks
michael rogers np broski
Gaaaaaaa ayyyyyy
Man I can’t imagine swimming there. I almost drowned at a normal beach at high tide, imagine this holy sh*t
BRUH JUST LIKE ME MAN! I WAS GETTING PULLED IN LIKE WOLF PULLING HIS PREY!! THAT STUFF IS SCARY MAN!! straight up
semmy ngoue Exactly. Don’t fuck with rip currents
it's 3:00 am in west cali rn and i'm so sleepy but i'm here watching a documentary
Same here. I almost drowned in Tenerife many years ago as the breakers pulled me out over and over again. And that was of course not that huge swell.
Bruh my booty hurts Lol I can’t even swim and a little wave comes😭
her dad was one of the most outstanding photographers of the ocean and surfing. I have some of his one sheet photos from his early years. Miss his freedom of personality towards the ocean.
robert bennett cool
Great story. Brave daughter.
thanks
Frank Johnson doesn’t make her not brave it’s dangerous just getting in the water lmao stfu
And she wasn’t fucking there to swim into it god damn u didn’t even listen to the story she fucking went there to be in her fathers place when he died to see what it was like but she could’ve died and if she would have swam into the fucking wave she would’ve literally committed suicide and that’s not what she was there to do fucking idiot
How is she brave 😑😑😑
@@slash-kv1sc what
They’re over here surfing the worlds deadliest waves when I’m here running away from a ripple lol
me.
I run from the nose little wave in the beach
Issie Xs LMAO ME
You are the sensible one.
Issie Xs well you better run faster coz that means a T. rex is stomping towards you
“We all come from the sea. But we are not all of the sea. But those of us who are, we must return to it, again, and again.” This girl is what makes that quote true
That quote is so hauntingly beautiful everytime. I love it
The sea is in my heart, but she's terrifying sometimes.
Those last few sentences. Really powerful. Thank you for this.

1:15 gave me goosebumps after learning what the title meant
same bru!
What does it mean?
chloe :3 Amber is forgiving pipeline for causing the death of her father
Ashley oh lmao I thought that you meant the name pipeline
For those who are wondering:
These are huge waves, but you might be wondering "they aren't as big as Nazaré
s waves, so why are they considered the deadliest?" the answer is, there is a razor-sharp coral reef under the water. If you get smashed under a wave you will probably get smashed into a coral reef.
It’s not razor sharp reef. It’s cavernous jutting reef. It’s deadly because you can get body parts caught in the crevices and drown or you can hit your head and lose consciousness.
While there is coral nearby towards the end of the ride and you could get hurt, the deaths happen in the impact zone where the impact of the lip doesn’t allow for coral species to develop. And it’s not coral reef. It’s volcanic reef. Which is even more dangerous.
Well they should mention that its the deadliest surf spot, not the deadliest wave
it’s also 4 feet deep
Of course there are a multitude of breaks that are potentially deadlier, but (most) people have the self-preservation instinct to avoid them. This is usually because the most dangerous type of wave (huge slabs, correct me if I'm wrong), with the exception of Teahupoo, usually look as dangerous as they are, with tons of boils and steps on heaving, vertical walls of water, with ludicrously heavy lips that break into water a couple feet deep or less, or sometimes even dry rock. Pipeline and Teahupoo, on the other hand, are much more inviting to surf (relatively speaking).
Thank you, I was, in fact, wondering this.
Having bodyboarded Pipeline when waves were somewhat small for the spot, I can tell you the place is intimidating. Has a legendary status to it. Sharp reefs are inches from you at the closest points while you're speeding along on a wave. Cool to see this girl face her fear and reconnect with her Dad in a way.
TonyZXT same bro, one wrong move and you can end up badly hurt
TonyZXT yup, my brother in law gashed his leg up on the reefs pretty good one year out surfing pipe.
Da reef start here..
Da wave breaks here..
Don't be there, or your gonna get Drilled
🐢
..... ... ..
One of my friends was surfing Pipeline during a somewhat high tide and he fell off of his surf board and got thrashed around and he just his calf open and had to get 41 stitches that place is gnarly
Wow. I personally think - what makes it so powerful - is that the story took us through so honest, heartfelt and pure emotions in under 6 minutes. You don't get those kind of moments anywhere else on the Internet than UA-cam.
Wow, thanks! 🙌

geez she’s stunning and her photography skills are incredible
Aloha Amber, your father was an incredible human being. One who lived his passion behind the camera. 15 years ago Jon blessed us with his Love and Aloha as he was our photographer for our wedding at the Ko'olau Ballrooms. We miss you Jon...
This video made me realize how important audio and sound effects are to a movie/video clip. Adds so much emotion and layers to the story
This could have been like a 2hr movie 👏
*PIPELINE*
II WOOFY II There is a film, it’s called Chasing Mavericks
As a photographer that hits hard man
Respect for those skills to shoot like that on those conditions
Im getting Moana vibes over here×D

It seems so dangerous but there is Jamie O’Brien surfing Pipe on a couch
Seriously. Sometimes I wonder if he's even mortal.
Loved her Dads shots in surf mags... he always got the goods. Good luck young wahine!

Wow! This moved me to tears. So sorry for your loss Amber. Thank you for your courage and also for understanding what your father was all about. Great video!,
this moved me on levels I can't explaining words; thank you Red Bull.
So nice to hear! 🙌
That footage is soooo awesome to watch!
But RIP Jon Mozo😢😭
Wow. Cinematography on this film is on fire. What a beautiful and and fitting tribute to her father
I grew up in the plains of Nebraska a thousand miles from the ocean. But standing in endless fields of corn I could feel the ocean tug at me . And the first time I saw the Pacific crashing on the shore I knew why. It's wisdom to seek and understand the spirit and power there in.
More props to the camera man that he did all of this
what a great story and awesome production. Thank you for sharing.
That was an incredible edit. Bravo to the editing team. Wow
Thanks! 🙌
I love the red bull media house videos, they just get better with each one. would love to see some more behind the scenes of action photography
Amazing
“If there was one person I trust to take me out to pipe it would be him.”
That’s what she said.
Hahah
No why would you think that? My eyes are just sweating 😅
This is a great video, actually more like a beautiful short story
Thanks! 🙌
Just shows how dangerous the wave is, especially for the surfers who are actually in the waves you see pictures of
Yup, and this film is also a great window into how dangerous it is for the photographers who capture those surfers at Pipe
@@RedBullSurfing it seems like the photographer has a mote deadlier job then the surfera
Damn this is beautiful, and so is she.
I thought she was gonna surf it not just look at it lmao
This is amazing, she has so much courage
*Im not crying, I’m just in shock. So inspired. This was stunning and beyond perfect. Forever a favorite* 💛💛🙏
Didn't skip a single second of this video

Thanks for letting us know 🙌🏽 Definitely an amazing film!
Way to go your Pops is super proud of you, your buddy is cool too!🤙🏽🌺👌
This is like the best thing Ive ever watched. Red Bull for the Winn!!
well done guys. super powerful. i think all action sports can bring that feeling out in people and i think that is what we all seek
What we do for a rush! Sometimes you got to ask yourself the question? Is it real worth it.??
Wow the ocean is soooo beautiful and yet soooo intimidating great story makes u think don't take for grated anything just like that it can be taking from you and what a nice smile on u amber 😀😀
This is incredible and I take my hat off to this lady and anyone else willing to go out there!
Amber is such a badass inspiration!
Amber, your dad was a fkn hero! I still remember reading about him surviving that shark attack at Goat Island when I was a young kid in Kailua. I was so sad to hear about his death years later. The way you went out to conquer your fears is an inspiration to us all.
“If there was one person I would trust to take me out to pipe for the first time it would be him”
~ Amber Mozo 2018 🙏🙏🙏
Wow
Such grace
Monsalve That’s a double entendre 😂
damnnn what a BEAUTIFUL video:))
This story is soothing to the soul..I can feel her passion for photography and her great love for her father.
I am happy that she found the strength to face pipeline and feel her fathers presence protecting her as she experienced what he loved to do.
His amazing pics were proof that it was his calling in life.
keep his passion alive!!
💪🍀♥️⭐
This is incredible
Even though it's Red Bull marketing,t the sponsorship material they choose does great things for expanding imaginations for what feats and adventures people can achieve. I can't think of a better, more positive marketing brand than Red Bull. It's perfection of subject matter choices and honest commitment to associate with the image for the products.
Pipeline “the world’s deadliest wave”
Teahupo’o “do I not exist anymore?”
I think people call pipe the deadliest wave because so many people have died there, I would say Teahupoo, dungeons and shipsterns are the world's most dangerous wave while pipe is the deadliest
@@tree-mm6sw ya I agree now 👍
awesome video quality!! Great video!
Just came back from Oahu and surfed at Waikiki a few times during my stay and was the first time I've ever surfed. Dude, I fell in love. There's something so serendipitous about being out there and being at the hands of the ocean and what she decides, there's a level of peace you feel that no matter what happens I'm okay. Watching these surfers fight their way just to get out there and I then after surfing and seeing the location realized I had zero idea of the work and dedication these surfers had to expend. RIP to her father but everything she said I understood. If you're going to go, doing something you love to do at one of the most popular surf locations in the world, is definitely the way to do it. Mahalo.
so incredibly inspiring and beautiful💙🌊
That's really nice to hear! 🙌
The rich tom-tom historically manage because address conclusively present like a puzzled thunderstorm. fanatical, sour ukrainian
Such a great story told here. Really gives me goosebumps!
Must be really fit to tread water that whole time. Wonder how much the camera plus housing weighs.
Also, why don't more Pipe surfers wear some form of head protection? Why lose your life if you don't have to.
I haven't got something in my eye - you've got something in your eye! This is a beautiful short film - I agree with others, would be great to make into a full length movie!
That’s really cool, but the only thing I dislike is how she kept saying her dad let that wave kill him or like he died happy out there. Like, no I’m pretty sure he wasn’t out there just like, “alright I got some pics now ima let this wave kill me, peace out.”
Excuse me, I think I've got something in my eye...sob, sob.
Absolutely gorgeous and such a brave girl your father would of been proud
You gotta take in mind that People like Jamie o Brian Surf here EVERY day Facing those waves. You gotta give those people some respect.
he died doing what he loves as passion, and had people that loved him too.
I’ve surfed their before during summer because during winter the waves are mini tsunamis and all the surf competitions are their my favorite surfing beach is chuns and Ali I we are locals so when I saw this I immediately clicked
This is why the internet was invented...great story.
Omg! Oahu! I live in Oahu. Wow! She's so brave. I didn't know we had the world's deadliest wave? I've liven here ever since I was in my mum's womb and out! Lmao Tmi. But wow. R.I.P Jon Mozo
Love this! “Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of those who came before us, seek what they sought.”
Dunno About beeing happy when getting crushed by wave and held underwater until you drown but i guess ist about "The Wave"
Those waves a breathe taking!!!
them saying it’s the scariest wave:
jamie o’brien: surfing pipeline on an inflatable flamingo wearing a speedo
This is Mohana in real life!! Loved the story.
im pretty sure thats supposed to be moana
i’ve surfed pipeline before and it’s demanding, if you lose your board it’s all about mentally being able to swim in and that this could be it so be careful.
an incredible story - and beautifully told!
Really cool video... massive respect, people who have lost there father's will understand...
I would love a movie of this
