her dad was one of the most outstanding photographers of the ocean and surfing. I have some of his one sheet photos from his early years. Miss his freedom of personality towards the ocean.
“We all come from the sea. But we are not all of the sea. But those of us who are, we must return to it, again, and again.” This girl is what makes that quote true
And she wasn’t fucking there to swim into it god damn u didn’t even listen to the story she fucking went there to be in her fathers place when he died to see what it was like but she could’ve died and if she would have swam into the fucking wave she would’ve literally committed suicide and that’s not what she was there to do fucking idiot
michael rogers what she was saying is it’s beautiful and worth it, I’m sure that’s what every big wave surfer will tell you cause they know there life is on the line most of the time
Wow. I personally think - what makes it so powerful - is that the story took us through so honest, heartfelt and pure emotions in under 6 minutes. You don't get those kind of moments anywhere else on the Internet than UA-cam.
For those who are wondering: These are huge waves, but you might be wondering "they aren't as big as Nazaré s waves, so why are they considered the deadliest?" the answer is, there is a razor-sharp coral reef under the water. If you get smashed under a wave you will probably get smashed into a coral reef.
It’s not razor sharp reef. It’s cavernous jutting reef. It’s deadly because you can get body parts caught in the crevices and drown or you can hit your head and lose consciousness. While there is coral nearby towards the end of the ride and you could get hurt, the deaths happen in the impact zone where the impact of the lip doesn’t allow for coral species to develop. And it’s not coral reef. It’s volcanic reef. Which is even more dangerous.
Of course there are a multitude of breaks that are potentially deadlier, but (most) people have the self-preservation instinct to avoid them. This is usually because the most dangerous type of wave (huge slabs, correct me if I'm wrong), with the exception of Teahupoo, usually look as dangerous as they are, with tons of boils and steps on heaving, vertical walls of water, with ludicrously heavy lips that break into water a couple feet deep or less, or sometimes even dry rock. Pipeline and Teahupoo, on the other hand, are much more inviting to surf (relatively speaking).
Having bodyboarded Pipeline when waves were somewhat small for the spot, I can tell you the place is intimidating. Has a legendary status to it. Sharp reefs are inches from you at the closest points while you're speeding along on a wave. Cool to see this girl face her fear and reconnect with her Dad in a way.
One of my friends was surfing Pipeline during a somewhat high tide and he fell off of his surf board and got thrashed around and he just his calf open and had to get 41 stitches that place is gnarly
Aloha Amber, your father was an incredible human being. One who lived his passion behind the camera. 15 years ago Jon blessed us with his Love and Aloha as he was our photographer for our wedding at the Ko'olau Ballrooms. We miss you Jon...
This story is soothing to the soul..I can feel her passion for photography and her great love for her father. I am happy that she found the strength to face pipeline and feel her fathers presence protecting her as she experienced what he loved to do. His amazing pics were proof that it was his calling in life. keep his passion alive!! 💪🍀♥️⭐
Wow! This moved me to tears. So sorry for your loss Amber. Thank you for your courage and also for understanding what your father was all about. Great video!,
Amber, your dad was a fkn hero! I still remember reading about him surviving that shark attack at Goat Island when I was a young kid in Kailua. I was so sad to hear about his death years later. The way you went out to conquer your fears is an inspiration to us all.
So refreshing to see a comment section on a video about a woman of power doing something out of passion and none of the comments are about her looks. All focused on the beauty and power of the content. Beautiful.
Just came back from Oahu and surfed at Waikiki a few times during my stay and was the first time I've ever surfed. Dude, I fell in love. There's something so serendipitous about being out there and being at the hands of the ocean and what she decides, there's a level of peace you feel that no matter what happens I'm okay. Watching these surfers fight their way just to get out there and I then after surfing and seeing the location realized I had zero idea of the work and dedication these surfers had to expend. RIP to her father but everything she said I understood. If you're going to go, doing something you love to do at one of the most popular surf locations in the world, is definitely the way to do it. Mahalo.
Being a father, is there a greater wish than that? Passing down the love you have for something, the passion, the energy and fulfillment. To not only experience yourself, but to have your child actually understand and get it. To create that spark, but even on a grander scale have her see it and seize it, conquer it. There is no greater gift he could have given her, and she was brave enough to embrace it.
My deepest sorrow for the loss of a legend, husband, father, a family member and friend to many. His photography was truly awe inspiring! He puts you right in the action what I would recall; The impact zone! To give you that feel just before retreating to safety! That’s a true photographer......
As a photographer myself, this is a very inspirational story that needs to be expanded on. Please someone make a longer documentary about Amber and her amazing father, Jon!
this could be a full length movie...this girl, her father's lineage/talent/death, and her camera...totally absorbing and beautiful. I just got my very first wave and have had a hard time getting back in for some reason (I'm a total wuss?) This inspired me very much thank you...
So powerful, i felt the intense emotions she must have had facing that wave while just sitting here on my couch, so brave girl and very creative video production... BRAVO!!!
Pipeline exists. It does not give. It does not take away. We are the people who trespass into it’s beautiful nightmare. The burden of acceptance lies with us. This video is a wonderful tribute.
So brave to go out to the place that took her fathers life, and learn to forgive and respect that place, so much power and emotion is this video you could see that it meant a lot to her. Pipeline is so powerful and amazing and beautiful!!!!🙏 This deserves a full documentry👌🏻👏
Even though it's Red Bull marketing,t the sponsorship material they choose does great things for expanding imaginations for what feats and adventures people can achieve. I can't think of a better, more positive marketing brand than Red Bull. It's perfection of subject matter choices and honest commitment to associate with the image for the products.
Pipeline ....the song has and will be my favorite surf song. I just learned how to play it. That led me here. I had no idea this place has taken so many lives. I will dedicate this song to all lost whenever I play it. That is often......God bless all who venture there.
I grew up in the plains of Nebraska a thousand miles from the ocean. But standing in endless fields of corn I could feel the ocean tug at me . And the first time I saw the Pacific crashing on the shore I knew why. It's wisdom to seek and understand the spirit and power there in.
Wow this story evokes so many emotions. I have such envy and massive appreciation of your courage and connection with the ocean. Sadness fo your loss. Joy and tears for recognising and challenging your fears. You truly live life. You are LIFE. Thank you for being so raw and sharing with us your awe-inspiring journey. You are a beautiful inspiration.
Wow the ocean is soooo beautiful and yet soooo intimidating great story makes u think don't take for grated anything just like that it can be taking from you and what a nice smile on u amber 😀😀
I haven't got something in my eye - you've got something in your eye! This is a beautiful short film - I agree with others, would be great to make into a full length movie!
This is so fucking beautiful and so emotionally and physically crazy and to see that smile on her face.. she’s a strong one. Respect to her and to the man who’s guided her through this journey. This must have been so relieving and amazing to experience once you get past all the obstacles
I've been binge watching Bondi Rescue episodes about that huge beach in Australia & it shows drowned ppl being resuscitated and the reality that they lose some. The ocean is terrifying so huge respect to her!
wow...great to see some of these stories about these incredible women and their dads and their relationship with the ocean. this one is particularly-moving...thanks.
WOW!! This is an incredible short film, an absolute masterpiece in and of it's own!! So glad I chose to watch this!! Thank you!! Well they should mention that its the deadliest surf spot, not the deadliest wave
it’s also 4 feet deep
Of course there are a multitude of breaks that are potentially deadlier, but (most) people have the self-preservation instinct to avoid them.
