The Quasar Fire Class is easily one of the best ships in Star Wars. If the Galactic Empire were real, this thing would have been built in the ten-thousands. It's small enough and cheap enough to build a lot of them, and to be almost disposable. It's also large enough, and well enough equipped to handle a ton of low intensity missions on it's own, but is still enough that bringing just a few into a large fleet would really help in a straight up fight. It's sort of like the US Navy's Escort Carriers or WWII, except with more ability to fight in the actual battle fleet. Something between a Casablanca Class (like USS Gambier Bay) and an Independence Class. Something like the Japanese Hiyo and Junyo, if you know the Imperial Japanese in WWII. While Japan may only have built a few light carriers and smaller carriers, ships like USS Independence and USS Gambier Bay made up a huge part of the US Navy's carrier force during WWII, with somewhere in the neighborhood of 80 hulls completed in the CVE/CVL range just during the war. The CVLs were smaller, cheaper carriers that had the speed to operate with the actual fighting forces. They were used to augment the more powerful fleet carriers of the Yorktown and Essex classes. The CVEs were smaller still, usually built on the hulls of converted cargo ships (quite a lot of CVLs were converted warship hulls - many being built from the hull of Cleveland Class light cruisers). The CVEs were a lot slower than the CVLs, and since they were built out of merchant hulls, much less able to stand up to battle damage, but also able to mount a lot fewer defensive weapons. Most CVEs carried a single heavy AA gun, and a smattering of light/medium weapons. CVLs tended to be a bit better defended. CVEs did things like provide air support for Marines and Army troops fighting for control of islands. They provided a lot of anti-submarine patrols, and they could provide fighter cover for parts of the fleet that were less combat capable than the high power ships of the battle fleet like the fleet carriers, fast battleships, and cruisers. They did a lot of things like escorting troop convoys, protecting cargo shipments, and guarding places were supplies were unloaded. The Quasar Fire Class would be really, really, good at those sorts of jobs that the CVE or CVL were so great at during WWII, but with a little more ability in real battles than either. Great, great ship.
I love this ship so much, was fascinated by it as a kid reading that old "Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels" book. I actually really like the refit they did for Rebels, bringing this lovely ship into canon and updating the design a fair bit, separating the giant flight deck into four hangars, and making it look a bit more fitting for the Imperial Navy.

I used to play an old 1998 star wars game , and this was the best ship in the game for using a huge amounts of small ships you can deploy and then have your carrier flee allowing you to keep this ship alive.
Yes! I've been waiting for you to do the Quasar for so long! Short and sweet. Please consider doing some of the lesser-known Star Destroyer designs like the Gladiator, the Secutor, or the Mandator.
I love how Star Wars Rebels establishes the trend of everytime the rebellion needs something, from fuel to weapons to shields to even whole ships, they literally just hijack it off the Empire, plus the fact that the empire is literally almost everywhere becomes a disadvantage for them as that just gives the rebels more places to steal from. It's like they need supplies and instead of going shopping they head on over and hit up the nearest Imperial Garisson.
I remember in your last video on this ship that hull fractures caused by coming out of hyperspace were implemented as a form of sabotage by the Sullustians. Is that now just legends? Great ship, and great video BTW.
The hull fractures are still part of its lore, implied to be “shoddy construction” by mid & outer rim shipwrights. Definitely not sabotage. >;) After multiple hyperspace jumps it would need to be docked & maintained or risk an catastrophic accident..
My head canon is that this Quasar Fire is the Escort Carrier version of Quasar Fire cargo vessel in legends, replacing its cargo bays with flight decks, like some WWII escort carrier that were based on the hull of cargo ship for ease of construction. These ship were only meant to deploy its air wing in support of low-intensity combat operation and were not supposed to engage in real combat, let alone any fleet action, thus allowing the ship to be build with much lower standard than a full size warship (again, like some WWII escort carrier). The hull fracture is the result of these ship having to operate far from port for long period of time, way longer than intended by her original spaceframe, plus lower construction standard.
It's a really interesting design and I love the profile, but it does make me question why the hangar section is not significantly longer (or, conversely, why the top section is not significantly shorter to keep strictly to the light role), even if only the central two bays were stretched it could surely easily fit double the number of fighters aboard. Of course the 'real' answer is likely rule of cool, but it would be interesting to have some lore for justifying the design.
I think the upper areas were for housing the crew and other equipment, along with providing a solid defense for fighters launching and returning to the hangers.
Another notable member of this class employed by the Alliance was the "Flurry," which served with distinction in the Bakura Incident shortly after the Battle of Endor.
You should do more commentary on the quality of things, like you do in your top 5 lists. The top 5 lists have all of your thoughts on things, and it would be nice to hear them in more detail for specific videos.
You should have mentioned that it first appeared in Star Wars: Rebellion Just to be clear: I am VERY happy that a design made it from one of my favourite games into canon.
A version of this ship appears first appears in "The Truce at Bakura"; that's how it ended up in Rebellion. Great game and cool to see a shout out for an underappreciated gem.
@@adamkenway7308 Thanks for pointing this out! I read "The Truce at Bakura" long ago, but didn't remember that detail. But of course! Now that you said it - Pter Thanas was also taken from that novel! I still play Rebellion from time to time - just a great game. :-)
Probably just whinny people who don’t like the “canon” aspect of it.. it’s the same ship, slightly different backstory & people would rather be upset then just happy to have their ship in universe again.. Nearly all Legends ships would rejoin canon once a spot is made for them. & Poor Spacedock crew making informational vids just doing they’re thing talking about ships they like in whatever universe they come from.
I don't know, seeing some new ships would be nice too, though I can understand wanting to see something like a Duantless or an Assualt frigate. Everything the rebels have seem to be stolen or from the Mon Calamari and not the refitted ships they used to make.
It was so awesome seeing a Star Wars Rebellion ship made Canon. That game never got the respect it deserved previoulsy, but I still think, to this day, it is the most comprehensive collection of EU characters, ships and planets in anything Star Wars. One of the best Star Wars games ever.
It might just be me being weird, but the short landing bays kinda bug me. Full-lenght bays would allow for transporting more supplies, spacecraft, and allow for larger engines to get in and out of an area more quickly.
Great video! This is one of my favorite Star Wars ships. The Empire would have been smarter to make more of these and less Star Destroyers. Two of these can carry more TIE fighters than a Star Destroyer at less than 3% the cost.
A Quasar-Class with a pair of Arquitens-Class Cruisers could have been used to control a system or even several systems for a fraction of the cost of an ISD plus it would have been a better match for the rebels star-fighter focused fleets. Good thing for the good guys that palpatine was a fervent believer in the stupidest military doctrine in history. Just imagine how many of these carriers could have been built and outfitted with Tie Defenders if the Death Star wasn't built, or even if the empire just cut back its ISD program by 20% (or just kept using the effective victory and venator class combo of the late clone wars, just imagine the savings!)
Yeah it's weird, it has a tiny air wing and it's got this big triangular armor plate just sitting over everything. Very odd design, wouldn't it make more sense to wrap that armor all the way around the hangers kinda like the Atlas Carrier from BGD? Then you could provide more cover for the hangers and make them bigger, allowing you to carry more aircraft; that'd be a much more effective use of space. Of course then you'd probably have to redesign the whole ship from scratch. I don't hate it mind you, just seems somewhat inefficient to me.
Unlike our real life carriers this ships have to carry all fighters internally..and not just that.. they still need space in their hangars for other stuff.. fighters cant go into sardine mode and in the case of the Quasar it can launch nearly ALL its wing at the same time..not just 4 at a time with long periods in between.. it can also recover at least 4 fighters simultaneously.. a Ford can probably only carry less than 40 fighters in her hangar deck.. in sardine mode and wings folded..wich means launching them will take a LOT of time to get them out to the flight deck. unfold, rearm , refuel and launch only max 4 at a time.. the Quasar has ALL fighters in their stations ready to launch at any time from the hangar..
If the Quasar ended up being like the X-Wing, the rebellion would have definitely been alot more of a challenge for the empire to contain then they already were.
Yeah in Old Legends they were used alongside Frigates to make lighting raids with their fighters. The old version even carried more fighters 72 instead of 48, but I can see they are trying to make the Rebels a bit more Ragtag.
This may seem a bit weird, but I have a funny idea. I have an Imperial squadron, approaching a Rebel-inhabited planet. They have a large allied cruiser that's headed towards hyperspace. But before they can take their leave, I'll have my Interdictor-class rip it from hyperspace, and have my two Quasar Fire-classes launch a swarm of fighter squadrons, ripping the vessel's external systems to shreds, allowing a substantially safer boarding than if I didn't apply this tactic. Impractical, yes. But I'll be damned if it wasn't a good psychological warfare tactic.
For some reason I've always felt like it and Lancer should have been one ship. Just squeeze it together, it's not like they have massive turbolaser batteries that take space and requires lots of energy.
So, I've seen how you do breakdowns on fighters on your channel - do you ever plan on doing something for the VF-series Veritech Fighter from 'Robotech, or the sadly-overlooked but asskicking SA-43 Hammerhead aerospace fighter from an equally-overlooked show from the Nineties: 'Space:Above And Beyond'? I think there's people who came up with those shows who'd enjoy that - and after seeing your 'Starfury vs. Viper' ep and the 'S:AAB' ep 'The Angriest Angel', I don't think the Hammerhead would survive a Starfury, but she'd kick a Viper's ass.
Hey spacedock I was thinking 🤔 about making my own strategy by using the thrown pincer or the Akbar slash. I do have a strategy game that will help me with my strategies in battle.
EC henry could do a reverse Nebulon-B and make a stripped-down version of the Quasar, removing most of the delta wing and retaining only the bridge, spine, hangar and engines.
@@WesAG23 Yeah I can imagine it's a lot of work, not something you just throw together. I just thought it's an interesting idea. I didn't realize they work together, their stuff is so incredibly impressive.
I loved the specialized aspect of this ship but hate the shaping, like what is the point of half or more of the tonnage being an irrelevant wedge, id want just the hanger section and put the engines on one side and the crew/bridge at the other and make those the front/back so the hangers are on the side. This just seems shaped the way it is cause it had to be imperial.
I like this thing, but do think the bay layout could be arranged in a more sensible manner. Having ONLY forward facing bays is a pet peeve of mine. Seems like it adds the unnecessary complication of making it difficult to launch fighters/shuttles while the ship is under thrust. Would perhaps be better with a "T" shaped arrangement with port/starboard/fore launch bays connected to a central hub. If you re-arranged the engines on the aft you could even add an aft bay.
I suspect it was built with simplicity and expensive foremost in mind. Probably better to think of this as a mobile spacestation than a conventional warship. You park it in orbit of less important planets with a couple Gozanti cruisers to maintain an Imperial presence.
@@jrggrop Well, what I described would certainly be more complex, especially splitting engines to provide a gap for an aft bay... but simply changing the layout to have two port facing and two starboard facing bays wouldn't be any more complicated or expensive to build than four forward facing bays, I don't think.
Star fighters don’t fly a combat air patrol (CAP), they fly a combat space patrol (CSP) (yes, sometimes they fight in atmosphere, but CSP is usually defending star ships in space)
I'm honestly surprised how rare a dedicated carrier is in Star Wars, what with it's surprisingly heavy usage of fighter craft. Both sides can absolutely benefit from a ship whose sole duty is to be a moving hangar for swarms of fighters and bombers, so seeing Battlestar style ships be more common is....odd.
You're all gonna think I'm insane, but I genuinely prefer the Ton-Falk as a carrier. It's a giant heavily armored brick that's 90% hangar bay by volume, and it's not shaped like a shoebox glued to the underside of a baseball diamond.

First appearance in The Truce at Bakura, firts visual in Star Wars : Rebellion (a great game!)
YES! Always cover carriers
Also, wish the Phoenix Nest had been a Taun Falk considering the Quasar Fire was originally a Rebel ship class in the OEU.
They're both just flying flight decks but the Quasar Fire fits in with the Empires love of Pizza slices.
Even if it was only briefly, it was neat seeing the Rebels have a Star Destroyer-ish ship on their side 😊
Its been too long since I got to watch good UA-cam video on Star Wars. Thank you.
I had a good feeling you were going to do a video on the quasar, and you did a great job.
Love your ship breakdown videos! Always so well done and professionally put together. Love it!
What a clean design. Actually reminds me of the flying wing paper airplanes we used to make as kids.
Rebel Alliance: Nice ship you got there, be a shame if someone *stole* it.
YEAR 4 of asking for UESC MARATHON. I've got a whole life ahead of me, Spacedock!
The Quasar Fire is one off my favorite star wars vessels
Another notable member of this class employed by the Alliance was the "Flurry," which served with distinction in the Bakura Incident shortly after the Battle of Endor.
Love your videos dude, quality is great :)
You should do more commentary on the quality of things, like you do in your top 5 lists. The top 5 lists have all of your thoughts on things, and it would be nice to hear them in more detail for specific videos.
You should have mentioned that it first appeared in Star Wars: Rebellion
Just to be clear: I am VERY happy that a design made it from one of my favourite games into canon.
Love this ships design so much!
The Federation would love to have the design specks to build it's own fleet of Quasar class battle cruisers.
I've been looking forward to this
i am surprised you don't have any content on 'Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda', or 'Space: Above and Beyond'. Fun shows.
I want to know the people who disliked this video? This chanel's videos are top notch. Love them.
I don't know about anyone else but my favorite stories are always about a lone ship/tank/aircraft holding its ground in the face of certain death.
cannot unsee the ship having a thomas the tank engine kinda face at @1:29
It even sticks its tongue out like it was concentrating real hard. adorable!
I can't unsee it either.
I noticed that within seconds... before heading to the comment section. :(
I still have not finished the clone wars, so much to watch so little time.
We need to see more Original EU vessels such as the EU Quasar Fire and the Imperial Taun Falk-class Escort Carrier.
I don't know, seeing some new ships would be nice too, though I can understand wanting to see something like a Duantless or an Assualt frigate. Everything the rebels have seem to be stolen or from the Mon Calamari and not the refitted ships they used to make.
Hey, remember Ton-Falk carriers?
It was so awesome seeing a Star Wars Rebellion ship made Canon. That game never got the respect it deserved previoulsy, but I still think, to this day, it is the most comprehensive collection of EU characters, ships and planets in anything Star Wars.
One of the best Star Wars games ever.
I do love this design
It might just be me being weird, but the short landing bays kinda bug me. Full-lenght bays would allow for transporting more supplies, spacecraft, and allow for larger engines to get in and out of an area more quickly.
I wonder when you'll look into the ships of Final Space. The Crimson Light is in my opinion one of the coolest ships in Scifi.
Been waiting for this one 👍🏼
Great video! This is one of my favorite Star Wars ships. The Empire would have been smarter to make more of these and less Star Destroyers. Two of these can carry more TIE fighters than a Star Destroyer at less than 3% the cost.
Thanks for the content.
Just imagine how many of these carriers could have been built and outfitted with Tie Defenders if the Death Star wasn't built, or even if the empire just cut back its ISD program by 20% (or just kept using the effective victory and venator class combo of the late clone wars, just imagine the savings!)
nice video! I love the videos and use your videos to help design my own ships
That moment when you realize its the size of 2 Ford-class supercarriers side by side, and it has half the flight capacity of one of them
Yeah it's weird, it has a tiny air wing and it's got this big triangular armor plate just sitting over everything.
Unlike our real life carriers this ships have to carry all fighters internally..and not just that.. they still need space in their hangars for other stuff.. fighters cant go into sardine mode and in the case of the Quasar it can launch nearly ALL its wing at the same time..not just 4 at a time with long periods in between.. it can also recover at least 4 fighters simultaneously.. a Ford can probably only carry less than 40 fighters in her hangar deck.. in sardine mode and wings folded..wich means launching them will take a LOT of time to get them out to the flight deck. unfold, rearm , refuel and launch only max 4 at a time.. the Quasar has ALL fighters in their stations ready to launch at any time from the hangar..
posted this on your last vid but this time i'm actually early! ever thought about doing a vid on the peace keeper command carrier from farscape?
2nd favorite star wars ship next to the venator!
If the Quasar ended up being like the X-Wing, the rebellion would have definitely been alot more of a challenge for the empire to contain then they already were.
Quasar Class ships were in Legends. Truce at Bakura was one clear example.
Yeah in Old Legends they were used alongside Frigates to make lighting raids with their fighters. The old version even carried more fighters 72 instead of 48, but I can see they are trying to make the Rebels a bit more Ragtag.
@spacedock always love the episodes ❤ hope one day to see you cover the andromeda ascendant and hear what you think about it
I have to ask are you going to do a video with you cover every single warship used by the empire like you did with the republic and CIS
I would love one on the tie interceptor or tie bomber
Recommendations: Arsenal Bird (Ace Combat 7), Deucalion (Aldnoah Zero), Imperator-Class Titan (Warhammer 40,000).
Neat ship, promotions seem a bit wonky though. The engine blocks right next to the hanger with something like 2/3 of the ship more or less wasted etc
Such a perfect ship for Rebel tactics and operations, it's easy to forget it's an Imperial design.
In Legends it was Rebel, in Canon it's Imperial
@@VegetaLF7 in Legends there were multiple "Quasar Fire" class ships, too.
Now this is a nice ship.
Love the 'Fire.
The video is a little light on details. There should have been a video about the carrier that took part in the Battle for Bakura.
In thrawns revenge get one of these and a cr90 for every larger turbo lazer cruiser, starfighter superiority
Five words in one name. Makes the name as wide as the ship am I right?
Ya'll ever think about making one of these videos on the ship from "flight if the navigator"?
Hey spacedock I was thinking 🤔 about making my own strategy by using the thrown pincer or the Akbar slash. I do have a strategy game that will help me with my strategies in battle.
Never really have rebels a chance; early episodes seemed so campy. But given what I've seen here, i think I'll give the show another shot
I really like this ship.
It's too bad it got wrecked in that battle, the design was just different enough to want to see it in more action
Oh man it would have been cool if Pheonix Nest had survived to fight at Scarif!
@@kirkkerman right? Maybe have it crash into Vaders star destroyer at the end instead of that transport ship.
EC henry could do a reverse Nebulon-B and make a stripped-down version of the Quasar, removing most of the delta wing and retaining only the bridge, spine, hangar and engines.
It is more so Angelos K. that is doing that stuff nowadays.
Also they require payment, they said your suggestion was cute.
@@WesAG23 His artstation page is brilliant.
@@WesAG23 Yeah I can imagine it's a lot of work, not something you just throw together. I just thought it's an interesting idea. I didn't realize they work together, their stuff is so incredibly impressive.
@@Arashmickey you should find the discord. Lots of the artist and animators you like are over there i.e. skyforge, howie day just to name a few.
I was surprised and please when Revels pulled this ship out of the expanded universe.
Dang. I thought this was about those new triangle UFOs the Navy took video of.
I like how Atrisian Basic is basically just Star Wars Latin.
Oh I really like this ship
Make a video of Imperious-class Star Destroyer
I'm honestly surprised how rare a dedicated carrier is in Star Wars, what with it's surprisingly heavy usage of fighter craft. Both sides can absolutely benefit from a ship whose sole duty is to be a moving hangar for swarms of fighters and bombers, so seeing Battlestar style ships be more common is....odd.
He should do the tector next
You're all gonna think I'm insane, but I genuinely prefer the Ton-Falk as a carrier. It's a giant heavily armored brick that's 90% hangar bay by volume, and it's not shaped like a shoebox glued to the underside of a baseball diamond.
Any chance you could do Snowpiercer and big Alice from snowpiercer.
