    A Star Wars ship that has the same number of guns on the ventral hull as the dorsal hull? We're breaking new ground here. :)

      Well the Harrower-Class did it first.

    • @weldonwin
      @weldonwin 6 років тому +36

      With those sponson turrets, it looks as if she were intended to engage in broadside engagments, rather than going head-on like most KDY designs. It also means she can brig equally powerful broadside barrages to both sides of the hull symultaniously or engage targets from almost any arc around her except her rear arc. That said, she still has the large, obvious and highly exposed bridge that just screams 'Put Torpedos Here'

    • @corwinhyatt519

      Evan Sadly the Harrower isn't canon..... :(

      Who cares if it's canon anymore or not. We're just discussing the ships.
      Besides, most Star Wars fans have effectively decided "forget what is or isn't "official" anymore just enjoy everything you enjoy". It's turned in the direction of Star Trek where people have just established personal canons now.

    • @corwinhyatt519
      @corwinhyatt519 6 років тому +2

      weldonwin From what I can tell from the limited images I've seen of KDY designs (ISDs, Victory SDs, etc) their side cannon emplacements (not the barbuttes, the ones in the edges though the original barbuttes were not shown as superfiring) were mounted age of sail broadside style with very limited firing arcs (22.5 deg to either side of perpendicular from the edge of the hull for roughly 45 deg total arc each). They don't look to have a wide enough arc to be able to focus straight ahead at a single target point, I think at best they could set up a volley line of fire forwards.

This is probably because since the turrets were designed to fully retract inside the ship, it became very spacious once the turrets are removed then Imperials repurposed these as hangar bays. If we add the additional 3 fighters that are able to be stored in the front of the ship, the Arquitens can practically serve as a light carrier, having 11-19 Starfighters in total.

    Beautiful. An almost perfect vessel. And The Mandalorian introduces what might well be an entirely new refit the resolves some of the inherent issues of the original!
    What I've always admired about these vessels was the clever arrangement of their armament. They have the casemate-mounted heavy turbolasers for ship-to-ship combat, in keeping with the Star Wars fancy of broadsiding each other. (Impractical in space? Perhaps... but it looks great!) And having versions with quad laser cannons or twin light rubolasers in turreted hull positions gives these vessels a surprisingly well considered range of anti-starfighter coverage. Concussion missiles complete the typical armament and really make this class stand out as something of the Oliver Hazard Perry frigates of their universe.
    And with individual refits like the Thunderwasp and Moff Gideon's personal cruiser having internal hangar spaces accessible by the ventral hull and running the split prow, this class is transformed into everything an escort/patrol cruiser needs to be to police the untamed space of the Outer Rim or run convoys along their routes. What a lovely ship!

      The exposed bridges are part of the visual theme of the setting. Just like the gun turrets inspired by WW2 era bombers in smaller ships and massive manned cannons in bigger ones or the unnecessary deep pits in stations and buildings. It bugs me as well but it comes with the show and changing the ships into more "realistic" designs is something that is best left to a more realistic setting. SW is fun and at this point sticking to the aesthetic is better than trying to make exceptions to it.

    Here's something that bugs me about the Empire and their supposed obsession with keeping to the Tarkin Doctrine: If they believe that being over-reliant on fighter superiority goes against the Tarkin Doctrine, why do they obsessively equip even their smallest ship classes, like the Dreadnought-class or the Arquitens (which logically shouldn't be able to carry fighters at all), with fighter docking/launching facilities instead of just using dedicated carrier ships?

      I disagree highly. It would be technically a heavy blow to the Empire if Palpatine dies, that is for sure (although that too could have been easily avoided if the Imperator was not misreading Vader mind), but if the Imperial Navy had been able to repell the attack on the Death Star by using another tactic and fleet composition there would have been after that no more Rebel Alliance to celebrate victory. The Empire would not have lost the many First Grade officers on board of the Executor and would have still have all the men and ressources invested into the Second Death Star, while its main enemy would be more or less whipped out. Surely Mon Mothma would be able to rally new support, but that would have needed time. And since the Imperial leadership would have been more or less intact besides Vader and Palpatine (no loss of Admirals or Grand Admirals) I think the Empire would have not suffered so much infighting after the death of Palpatine like in Canon/Legends. I think it is much more likely that a replacement group of high ranking officers would have kept the story of Palpatines and Vaders death secret for a while until they had secured their grip on power, hunting down rebel cells with the intel they gathered from captured terrorists and boarded ships. They also would have the DS 2 as a great tool to scare local systems into submission who may dare to think about revolting after finally the news of the death of Palpatine would become public. It may be that the Empire would have been collapsed later because of infighting, but surely the civil war would have been continued for much longer and the rebel alliances maybe never would have gathered the strength to re-vitalized thNew Republic. The last "new Jedi" and his sister the terror princess would have been either dead or captured, as would be Admiral Ackbar and most other high ranking leaders of the alliance, nearly all their Mon Cal ships gone...

    • @kgfalcon9394
      @kgfalcon9394 6 років тому +2

      And current canon says that with the death of Palpatine, the empire dies as well.....he actively set up a scheme to do as much damage to the empire as he could when he died. Legends says he was using battle meditation at Endor, so when he died the Imperial forces were in disarray. The second the Death Star is destroyed the Imperial forces as vast as they are were demoralized. Without a strong leader, even though they still had amazing resources, they panic. The entire Empire, in both legends and canon, is so top heavy that strong leaders didn't exist outside of Palpatine and Vader.

      The source was Wookiepedia but since last week someone went in and really changed everything, adding all this info from Rebels and I don’t know why but they removed a description in the TIE paragraph mentioning that Sector Moff’s and Imperial High officials would have a larger modified ship with more powerful engines and install a hangar bay in the lower aft hull for full squadron of TIE’s. They either weren’t paying attention or were going to create a new ship classification for Moff’s. Obviously the show runners were using the previous class description concerning the modified command variant when designing Moff’s.
      In a fan blog I came across an argument with niche fans saying the Arquiten Class wasn’t near large enough to have an internal hangar let alone big enough for a full squadron, yet one fan pointed out in a Thrawn novel it mentions these larger command cruisers and why no one modifies Wiki to include this; we have proof of them being canon with appearance of Moff’s ship in Mandalorian.
      I’m sure in the coming months someone at Lucasfilm will create a entry for Moff’s Command Ship.

      @@tysonas1 I wouldn't think they would be larger, much how an ISDMKII is no bigger than the MK1. Better weapons(though it doesn't look like it), more armor, but the same hull ultimately. Arquitens' were always 325m IIRC, the hull design lasting through the clone wars and the empire. A large hanger bay is what I saw last episode. 325 meters is ample room to equip a modest hanger bay. And the way it was designed it looked like it didn't take over too much of the ship that would be used for other things. Assuming the hanger opening was 1/6th of the ships 325 meters you could still launch 6 ties wing to wing and have some room to spare.

    I never understand justify the counter argument of outdated ship in a galactic world. As i understand, technology in Star War are in a stand still and such a ship only "outdated" to the doctrine of the user and not by any technological means. Also how quick are ship build in SW ? A ship serving for 30 years is very short if you compare it on a galactic standard.

      Technology does advance.
      The empires tech is notably better than either the C.I.S or the Republic. Heck military tech actually advances faster than in real life.
      When they say out dated in star wars what they actually mean is an old ship simply isn't worth using anymore when it is just easier to make a more advanced ship.
      You can shove in as many upgrades as you want but in the end older ships simply cannot compete with the newer hardware on newer ships.

    • @dylanwight5764
      @dylanwight5764 5 років тому +3

      @@anthonyrodriguez6456 That's not entirely true. Take the real-world Perry-class frigates. Australia has maintained them far longer than they were ever _intended_ to operate, but that's because we appreciate the particularly resilient hull design and the relative lack of armament potential is not a problem to a nation leading the world in naval electronic system technology.
      The only reason Australia is set to retire our Perry-class frigates is because we can no longer acquire spare parts for them at a decent price. This was the same situation which forced us to retire our F-111C and F-111G fleet ten years ahead of the projected retirement date -- we go shafted by the USA's military industry refusing to provide the spare parts they were contractually obligated to continue producing. Moreover, we were unable to secure the license to produce our own parts because of international patent laws.
      The Arquitens hull has a lot of room for upgrade potential. As the penultimate light cruiser, it could easily be refitted with improved engines, avionics (or the exoatmospheric equivalent of the term) and weapon systems. While improved reactors would be difficult to adapt into an older hull, everything else can be.
      Even if you retire all old Arquitens-Class hulls, there is plenty of reason to introduce an Improved Arquitens-Class designed around the new technology. The hull itself is the perfect form for a light cruiser.

      It's one of the things that contrasts Star Wars with Star Trek. In ST, most spacefaring powers like the Federation or Klingons find effective designs and keep them for decades at the minimum (usually 50 - 70 years). In some cases, a design is used for well over a century, such as the Miranda-class and Excelsior-class. The ships are modular, so they could be refitted with newer torpedoes, newer phasers, upgraded shields, updated star charts and navigation computers, etc. Older ships are kept in reserve and are relegated to core world patrols, consular ships, science ships, auxiliary defense, etc.
      ST approach to ship design, logistics, and politics is generally a bit more grounded than that of Star Wars.

Sounds closer to the latter then the former, since Strike class cruisers could carry a squadron of ties & had roughly the same armament as this IIRC. Well, of course there may be some who escape this bunch of terrorists (although you rarely see escape-pods), but that is the same sick fact you see in a lot of movies. If it are the "bad guys" than mass murder is no problem. The "heroes" could make their lame jokes the next moment or hugg their droids - never spending a single thought about all the brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, sons and daughters they had killed - people who in most parts were never cruel nor "bad", just make their living by serving the government. But if the "bad guys" DARE to kill some "good guys" it is of cause often celebrated as it is the greates tragic...

      Like Marc Krieger said, it's war, the crew complement of a warship are considered soldiers, enemy combatants, and therefore fair game. This means they will die when the ship is destroyed or even badly damaged. Remember, the franchise is called Star WARS, not Star Let's-Hug-It-Out. Mass death of combatants on both sides will be a part of it.

    • @marcbartuschka6372

      The rebellion is not war, it is more guerilla/terrorism (who is a "freedom-fighter" and who a criminal depends on the point of view). And I have not the impression that the rebels did take the losses of their own man so lightly...
      If destroying Alderan was a warcrime depends of course also on the defenition. Alderan was a world which was active part of a galaxy-wide conspiracy and main supply-hub for the rebellion. So you may argue (and the Imperials did so) that it was surely not innocent. There were Alderanian ships at Scarif...
      Bail Organa himself said he wanted to return to tell "the people" that there would be "no peace".
      His will was granted. Tarkin send him and Alderaan the same message.
      That mean not that it was ok (destroying a planet or its population is stupid and cruel - of course also if the Jedi and the Republic did it, what they does), but it is also not the greatest crime in Star Wars History...

    If this ship is really 325m long (which I'm not entirely sold on given how large or small it looks in the shot with Consular charger refit in TCW), I feel like the ship is a bit too under armed for its size.
    This does not apply if it's much smaller though--if this is around or below 200m long, I think it's a pretty good upgrade over the Consular charger refit.
    Anyway, it's got 4 ~~twin~~ (correction,) quad turbolaser turrets (2 each for top n bottom), and 4 twin broadside casemate-like turrets of presumably much more limited firing angles (2 on each side).
    The turbolasers it has may be powerful, but it seems to lack weapons of smaller caliber like laser canons that can fend off small enemy crafts. Not too much of a problem for the Clone wars era one, perhaps, as it seems to be able to dedicate the ventral & dorsal turrets for anti-air defense (assuming that clone wars Arquitens can use them for AA defense like in Rebels) while using the side turrets for anti-(larger)shipping combat (I'm guessing they can fire forward like the trench turbolasers on ISDs)...... but for the Imperial Command Cruiser variant which doesn't have the 4 twin side turrets (I wonder if all Arquitens in the Imperial Navy lost their side turrets), it now has only 4 turrets, *only 4,* despite being almost three times as large as the Consular refit (which is around 116m long and has 6 turrets in its TCW appearence, albeit, I think, of much lower yields). That's just lacking in versitility, it seems to me. Imagine a WW2 cruiser, heavy or light, or hell, any surface-combat ships larger than a destroyer (I'm considering Consular as a real life ww2 destroyer equivalent for convinience sake) with four main turrets and nothing else--you cannot (just kidding), because that's freaking insane. No, even if these are dual purpose, you don't want to have just four of those and call it a day, especially when you are at least as large as a light cruiser. Where are the small/intermdiary AAA? Is the ship's targeting system so good that you can depend the life of a 325m long ship (which I think is not very small even by Star Wars standards) on 4 quad turbo lasers? Any thoughts?
    This is all just based on my intuition though, not on hard data (it's Star Wara after all), and this subject of the numbers and varieties of armament per size may be a whole can of worms that we may not want to open... *cough cough* ISDs.... *cough* Venators
    Really like this class of ship though, and doubly so if it's just a bit, or twice as large as a Consular.

    I believe you are confusing the Arquiten-class light cruiser with the Imperial light cruiser. The Arquiten was only 280 meters long on first design and refit to accommodate fighters on the forward forks after the formation of the empire. Extra armor was added to the hull to increase longevity but sacrificed its point defense weaponry. In addition to the two quad laser batteries on the dorsal and ventral hull the Arquiten was also armed with two dual turbolaser batteries on the left and right lateral line as well as 2 concussion missile launchers. These were later removed to increase crew compliment. The main role of the Arquiten was to move fast and punch hard through droid blockades and land troops on the ground then provide command and control and ground support for troops while the fleet battled above. After the empire took over they were repurposed as sector patrol ships.
