      D&D said they came up with this idea 3 years ago.This would be while they were filming S7. George gave them info at the end of S4 as he was prepared to leave the show, he hasn't been involved in the production since that meeting. That means Arya killing the night king was an original idea by D&D to "subvert expectation". So it's probably not happening in the books. EVEN, if it did happen in the books somehow, I don't think it will be Arya magically rocket jumping over 12 White Walker generals to surprise attack the night king when the previous scene she could barely escape a few wights.

      @Gregory Holston Agreed. The Hound training her was still when this show was grounded in realism and wasn’t just some typical power fantasy. Like when he taught her the important difference between _practicality_ vs _flashiness:_
      -----------------
      *“The GREATEST Swordsman who ever lived didn’t have a SWORD???”*
      -Hound sniggers.
      “...All right. You have a sword. Let’s see what he _taught_ you.”
      -Arya twirling her sword, Needle.
      -Hound with his hands at his hips.
      *“Go on. Do it for your Bravosii friend! **_...Dead_** like all the rest of your friends.”*
      -Arya spins 360 degrees.
      -Lunges her Needle at the Hound at full force.
      -...Blade does nothing, not even pierces.
      -Hound looks down at it for a second
      -Arya, still in disbelief...
      -He returns his gaze back at Arya.
      -Raises the back of his hand
      **WHAAMM** 💥
      -Arya falls.
      -Hound walks over.
      -Picks up her sword and points it at her.
      *“Your friend’s dead; Meryn Trant’s not. Because Trant had ARMOR and a BIG FUKN’ SWORD.”*
      -Flips Needle around.
      -Gives it back to her.
      -Heads back to camp (presumably to eat chicken).

    Arya used to be my favorite character in S1-S4. The faceless men arc completely killed my interest in her. It was just so boring and since then she's been an insufferable brat with no arc or personality. I hate how the showrunners glorify her as this "badass" super-assassin when in the first four seasons she was a traumatized girl with a kill list. An eight year old child who dreams of killing a dozen people isn't cool or something to aspire to, it's tragic and worthy of pity. Arya's arc should have been about dealing with her trauma and moving past it, not becoming Batman.

      @papereye9736 5 років тому +20

      @@Tina06019 "Only an assassin could have killed the Night King" - even if that were true, it would only be true because the writers wrote the Night King into a situation where he could be killed by an assassin. The Night King could've died a number of ways. It could've been a joined effort between Jon, Arya and Bran, it could've just been Jon, it could've been many things. But they chose to make it Arya, and only Arya. Not because it made sense for her character or story, or because it made sense from a 'tactical' point of view, or any of that.
      They did it because they admitted at several points that Arya was their favourite, and additionally, she's a fan favourite.
      Everything's been building towards a confrontation between Jon and the Night King. And we got nothing. So that's disappointing.
      Everything with Arya has been building towards her revenge plot. She's done nothing but seek revenge and the means to get that revenge. Nothing in her story has been building towards this. And if you want to bring up the "You'll close eyes" bit - if that were anything of relevance, blue eyes wouldn't have been stated in the middle originally. It probably would've been the first or the last colour mentioned. Cause that's how you do foreshadowing. Drawing attention to relevant points subtly.

      What especially baffles me is why they did not at least have Arya take on the appearance of a Wight, before taking out the Night King. It would at least make her assassination scene a little easier to swallow, give some more purpose to her actual training, and even pay homage to the books, where the “kindly man” appears to Arya with a skeletal face. But apparently, even a simple idea like that never crossed their minds.

      So she killed him two weeks ago at that feast. What happened during those two weeks? Were his household just assuming that he dissipated and magically prepared after two weeks? Or can it be that they saw him and interacted with him, only that it was Arya in disguise for all that time?

      So yes, we are talking about the show. And then even if we take the books int consideration, does that means that she knows all of the people related to Fray by name, appearance, knows the region like the lines of her palm and know of any of his plans? Because two weeks of ruling as lord Fray, would put her in every situation where she'll have to possess such knowledge.

      Marco Zoppè Tbh I only chapters I really liked were the ones with Yoren's group, and with the brotherhood - because of the secondary characters, it was a close look at the scum of westeros and suprised me to see how fleshed out and memorable some of them were, and because there was so much to expect, so many ways where it could (at one point I'm hypin for her to go to the wall, or winterfell, then all changes, maybe riverrun now, ok then, now the vale, or king's landing, then idfk anywhere. Hardly ever she was the highlight of her chapters imo.
      Meanwhile the show's version of her journey is like a predictable, already layed out track for her to follow in her revenge saga against evey single "eeviiiilll" character. While in the books it was more like "I'm goin to Harrenhal, okay, maybe I'mma kill the Mountain, -change of plans, now that Im goin to King's Landing Imma kill Cersei"(which was just her being her usual cocky way, she wasn't really gonna kill everybody with wishful thinking like she is doin in the tv series, actually, her death list ends up getting shorter without her intervention). She essentially became the embodienment of the "anyone can die" factor of Martin's writing. If Arya wants she can kill any character, so we know there ain't no way her enemies will survive, because she doesn't want to. Aynways, A Terrible idea for a character imho, hope the books develop her differently.

      It's not so much of characters dying only for the sake of character deaths, I believe its how the scenario and the circumstances are laid out to the audience that has been weak, on top of the characters in question themselves.
      For example: Rickon dying while running away from Ramsey absolutely made sense, since he was at a spot were it was difficult to escape from. If Rickon would have survived, that would have been bland and predictable. On the other hand, Tormund was grabbed by 4 wights during the battle north beyond the wall. It was completely unbelievable that he got out of that situation, the same could be said for Jon when he couldn't get on the dragon. He was left alone against thousands of wights only to get saved by Benjen at the last possible second. Or Jaime riding head-on on horseback towards Dany to kill her, only to get saved by Bronn at the last minute and they both escaped with incredible odds against them.
      It made sense for Rickon to die at that particular moment due to the odds against him.
      Jaime, Tormund, Jon and Bronn (and even Yara and/or Theon on top of the boat) should have died as well in their respective scenes due to the odds against them. All of them escaped alive.
      You either kill them because you put them in those situations, or you simply change the scenes altogether, since the audience will not believe and will not tolerate deus- ex machina tropes and conveniences since the show was NEVER about that.
      Y definitely became predictable.

    As a combat medic i have seen many wounds. Your chances of surviving a gut wound in this day and age is very high as long as you get prompt medical atrention. Promot meaning within 1 hour. Most gut wounds wont bleed out unless it is avulsed to ensure it dose not close. The biggist worry is infection, namely paratenitis. A gut wound in the day and age of GoT was a prescription for a slow painfull death. And jumping into an open swer with any kind of wound is a virtual death sentence in any day and age even with antibiotics. As far as the Red Wedding gose, I think stabing Rob Starks betrothed in the stomach was more symbololic, though it may have killed her quickly if it hit the right spot.

Back in those days (and probably now) some people were blessed with what may have been very strong immune systems. The Faceless Men don't impersonate others just to kill.... They impersonate others in order to be killed. Little finger didn't die. A faceless man died... the girl he talks to and gives a coin in the hall way while stalked by Arya is a faceless man . That's why the books aren't published yet, they don't want to spoil the last season that costs millions/episode.

      Florin P No chance, that the “littlefinger used a faceless man to be killed, instead him“ theory is real. We have only 6 episodes left and I don't think, that the series have time to explain us, what littlefingers big plan was. His goal, to earn as much power as possible, really don't fit in the conflict between the Living and the Dead at all. D & D just wanted to complete his storyline before the war between the white walker and the living starts.

She should be a psycopath after murdering tons of people and she should have become a faceless assassin, but they keep switching her back and forth between Arya Stark and complete lunatic... And she doesn't seem very troubled by it, so it doesn't make any sense. She is all over the place at the moment and that really sucks, since she was a very good character in earlier seasons.

  • @MundMoriginal

    Even if the knife missed her organs, the water would infected her wound, killing her very painfully. I guess she was born with plot armor.
    The show wouldn't be so bad, if it was never established that people's actions have consequences, but rather have tv show like plot armor all the time. Nobody would bother, because it would be clear it is a very streamlined adaptation of a book inspired story, instead, they establish rules and throw them out of the window for... submerging expectations? I tell you what submerged my expectations, I expected a good show, and boy did they success tricking my expectations there!
    You know, I love Supernatural, and it always annoys me to notice some bad writing and weird happenings that seem out of character (especially when you think about the Winchesters being training killing machines for decades, yet they always do stupid mistakes and sometimes struggle when trying to fight off a random human dude), but the show showed right from the beginning that there are very lose rules and death never being final etc. so the show has a very high priority on just entertaining, rather then creating a huge and complex narrative. D&D should write for kids shows, at least there the actors wouldn't understand what crap they are producing.

    I'm so glad I found this channel! I'm always annoyed by the lack of logic and consistency in any movie/show but the reply I usually get from my friends is - you shouldn't look for logic in a fantasy movie/show. What they are missing is the fact, that you can create a fantasy setting that is so coherent that is allows for suspension of disbelief for those who are watching. Arya's plot-line in the show was terrible.

    • @michaelbozas
      @michaelbozas 5 років тому +1

      It's not that "it's a fantasy show". It's that when the filmmaking is excellent, small nitpicks such as "she shouldn't survive that" shouldn't be what you're thinking. That's annoying for everyone. Why would I be the asshole that points out flaws so small that most people don't even notice. The GoT fanbase tends to look at the smallest nitpicks and hold them as examples for bad writing. I'm obviously not referring to entire subplots.

  • @kooleo2

    They were trying to subvert expectations. After getting stabbed many times in the stomach the expected result is to die but after listening to s8ep3 beyond the episode you will learn that the writers aim to "subvert expectations." The stabbing in the stomach scene all makes sense now. (sarcasm if you could not tell)

    • @TheFrygar
      @TheFrygar 5 років тому +15

      Ya the problem with the term "subvert expectations" is that, as you implied, it doesn't tell you anything about the storytelling *quality* of that technique. Like, having the Night King turn into a pink unicorn and start shitting rainbows certainly would have "subverted our expectations", but that would be ridiculous and unsatisfying, to say the least. Well, having Arya jump in and end a 10 year long compelling ancient mystery by poking a character in the chest was a very unsatisfying subversion of expectations as well.
      And it's not even the fact that Arya killed the NK that bothers most people (though some hate that it wasn't Jon). I would be totally fine with Arya killing the NK if the story surrounding that event was a meaningful, satisfying payoff to the dark mystery that has existed since the very first scene of the show. But it wasn't. The story was apparently, all along, that there are just some evil dudes living in the snow who want to kill everyone with an undead army. That was it. Nothing more. You could've guessed that from the very first season (aside from their creation by the Children of the Forest, which was kind of an useless side note). The NK's story was literally the *opposite* of subverting expectations - it was just a tired fantasy trope, and that's it.

    I have not read the books _yet._ I felt the the actor portraying *_Jaqen H'ghar_* was quite charismatic and liked seeing him again. However, I was not happy with what they did with the character. And I feel all of the problems with *_Arya's_* training could have easily been side-stepped (particularly within the medium of Television) by simply having her enter the _House of Black and White,_ and then keep her off camera for a season or more. When the time came to reintroduce her, I would have her overhear the political situation in Westeros (especially in The North) and have that be the impetus for her leaving. I believe this would have kept any plot holes from emerging, as we would have _no information_ about _how_ she was trained and _in what set of skills._ And I preferred the idea of the face-changing to be more of a glamour and less of a Halloween mask.

      That's what this show has become, they are fascinated by CG Dragons, Fireproof Disney Princess and her Hot Partner and how the save the world.
      The show was never about two invicible Mary Sues who are only important ones and a villain, who is a villain for no fucking reason at all.
      The show was meant to be so realistic that no matter how important the character is they will die at points nobody can predict.

So, the "culprit" is the own public, the massification. And this will never be fixed or healed, people just have to deal with it.

      Considering this is a TV series, the cinematography is indeed amazing. But that alone justifies bad writing? Maybe, if the hype was not so exaggerated. And I don't blame the fans to be hyped, the first 4 seasons are excellent. The book changes/adaptations (like the merge of characters, extra scenes like Arya and Tywin, etc), the show was doing a great adaptation. Then shit happened, lol Ever since the farewell scene between Tyrion and Jaime at the end of season 4, the show made that scene more lighthearted, saving face for Jaime.. In the books, things got ugly between these 2. At that moment I noticed the show was protecting Jaime for the sake of fan service. I had my doubts and my expectations lowered, luckily. Because season 5 was just as boring as the book equivalent, the end destroyed Stannis as a character, Davos went to a crazy place, no Rickon quest, etc.. Then Season 6 and 7 with tons of fan service and bad writing. I was lucky to not be hyped anymore. Imagine people who are reading this ever since the 90's, imagine their discontent.. They are the only ones who have a legit reason to be upset.

      my opinion? the show was way too convoluted in the early seasons.. it was frustrating and a chore to keep watching it.. if it wasnt already so popular i wouldn't have cared to follow through..... yes.. i think George got carried away on his story.. obviously.. he can't even finish it... way too many characters.. some too similar to others.. some are important, some arent.. some seem like they are but aren't...the story was just all over the place.. nothing but gratuitous sex and violence... i think only fans of the books would be already immersed in such a story from the start... but a new comer? how are they supposed to know who these people are and why all this stuff is so important??? its impossible.. its just a soap opera in a medieval setting.. and the acting was way worse early on... but the actors and characters have only improved.. and i actually appreciate a coherent plot.. like each season the pieces have fallen into place better and things are tying together in a rewarding way. if they hadn't made those sorts of changes after season 4 they would have an overly complicated story to try and finish and i think it would have totally shit the bed... but the fact that the show has only grown in popularity is proof that people are enjoying the story... seems like only the overly critical OG booknerds can't hang. which is frankly your problem... what did you expect?? for both the books and shows to be identical??? totally different mediums... just like Stephen King not liking Kubricks the Shining didn't change the fact that its one of the top films of all time. just get over it. an author shouldn't tell a director how to make a movie.. just like a director shouldn't tell an author how to write.

    The thing that hurts and annoys me the most is that Arya was my favorite character, and the build up to this storyline in the season 4 finale was so intriguing and full of potential ... And this is what we get for seasons 5 and 6?
    This was the best they can come up with for a story about a lost and broken girl that joins a secret mysterious cult of face changing assassins?
    I don't like to deal in absolutes, but perhaps anything other than what they did could've been better!

      The Faceless Men give up their identity, their personality and they have to literally become no one. That also means giving up their personal wants, needs and their greed. The Faceless Men are not about power, lands or titles. The show ruined the Faceless Men, because the implications and the meaning of drinking from the fountatin and becoming a Faceless Man was distorted and completely changed in the show. The show ruined the Faceless Men, because Arya was a popular character and the show-runners just wanted a bunch of fanservice. D&D said that they choose Arya to kill the Night King three seasons ago, which is when they ran out of source material. D&D are talentless hacks.
      All they know how to do is girl-power feminism Mary-Sue plot-driven and not good story-driven storytelling. As soon as they got the offer to do just that at Disney Star Wars, they JUMPED at it as fucking fast as they could. D&D are talentless hacks that should be hung, drawn and quartered for their treatment of GoT. I am so sick and tired of Hollywood and other twats over-compensating on feminism and creating Mary Sue girl-power feminist female characters that are just blander than a cardboard box. Just because you have a strong female character does not make that character interesting or make the show good.

    • @Alchemist1330
      @Alchemist1330 6 років тому +25

      Adrian Burchell ya. D&D gave sapochnik 28 days to film what he told them would take 45 days. They didn't listen so the ran out of time and Miguel had to cut the umbers turning on the Boltons, and they got rained in so the shot of Jon comming out of the mud and the crowd was filmed off the cuff because sapochnik has two days to wrap up everything an they were rained out. Sapochnik is a God and D&D are idiots for giving him shit to work with and no time. That's why he didn't direct any episode during season 7 because he hated working for D&D. However HBO got him back for season 8 by giving him a huge paycheck.

      @MrJH101 6 років тому +5

      I agree, but to be fair as well, they also don’t have nearly as much time as he does. He spends _a lot_ of time redrafting each sentence, paragraph, and chapter before he finds it acceptable to show to his editor. And then he realizes he made some inconsistencies halfway through a book and that he could’ve done something better, so he erases a quarter of the book. He then states that he repeats this process several times because he’s just never truly satisfied with it.
      I’m not saying this completely excuses the show writers’ bad writing, but they certainly don’t have as much time to do what GRRM gets to do.

    Insta like just based off the title. I still hope we get flashbacks next season that show us some explanation of what the actual f*ck really happened in Bravos. Like the waif killed Arya and finally became no one by cutting her own face off and offering it to the many faced God officially becoming NO ONE and FACELESS and taking up Aryas life for some plan. Because at this point, that makes more sense to me than what acctually happened.
    Also, did you know that the terminator chase scene was originally written to be even MORE ridiculous than what we got? And Maisie Williams talked them down and called out the ridiculousness herself? So what we got was even a slightly toned down version that shows Arya hurting more than they originally intended.

  • @gaiashadowasmr6380

    I would say this plot line is second is the worst category next to the Arya Sansa Little Finger story line. That was the worst! A highly trained faceless man being duped by LF. Syrio wasted his breath teaching Arya to "see" in that story line.
    For this one though re: the faces. I have had a theory for a while that once you start training for the faceless men they can use each others faces on demand with out being dead and having their faces cut off. Only really because of what the show does with Jaquen and Aryas face being used. If that is true at all that part can make sense in the show. I think the blind part was she reverted to her Syrio training more than anything with water dancing to defeat the waif. The parts that get me is that she was still in the early stages of training was her training completed by killing the waif? Cus that makes little sense. How did she go from this wounded kid to a fully trained faceless man. Maybe Arya is just a super quick study a few lessons with the 1st sword of Bravos and a few weeks washing a few dead people is all it takes. Easy peasy sign me up LOL

    • @gaiashadowasmr6380
      @gaiashadowasmr6380 6 років тому +1

      PS If stabbed in the gut without any major arteries or organ ruptures it is very survivable. But that just makes the waif a super fast runner only and an ineffective faceless man. Maybe Jon could have used the waif to run back to the wall for help she would have beat Gendry in a foot race.

    • @bore-osofmyr2539
      @bore-osofmyr2539 6 років тому +3

      Gaias Shadow the point you make about Arya using her water dancing training to beat the waif makes sense. However, they don’t really show the fight. So it’s kind of lazy if the showrunners just expect the audience to come to that conclusion.

      Agreed Bor-os I think there was a lot of lazy when it came to this. They should have focused on more important points and cut out the fluff stuff. I guess if we find any silver lining it is since we see nothing of her skills, it made the scene where we see Arya train with Brianne cooler because thats the 1st time we get to see her true skill set on display.

They were both trained with blind folds so in order to win she would have had to use a different skill set. I think you were confused as to my point. I hope you have some clarity now.

    Maisie Williams stated that it was her idea to have Arya wince and hold her wound. The original script just had her running around like she was never even stabbed. Also, in season 5, someone (can’t remember who [maybe GRRM]) had to remind D&D that Jaime had lost his right hand and would find it difficult to fight.
