      @Bolton His biggest mistake was writing both AFfC and ADwD, the developments in them could've been handled in just one book, maybe even handled as back stories and included in TWoW. A 5 or at most 6 book series would've been enough.

      Sorry, I'm late, but they ruined Sandor and Beric, when they turned them into comic relief characters. Also the whole "Cleaganebawl" sequence is a facepalm. And show Lyana was a ruin since the begining. However, Theon (though, he did have a few dumb scenes, as someone already mentioned), Melisandre (though, she didn't do much in the last seasons, besides lighting the swords, which didn't even help, and being over the top mysterious) and Jorah (though, his endind could've been much better and less predictable) are spot on.

    The showrunners have ruined so many characters, Loras became a stereotypical gay dude whereas in the books he is a Kingsguard member and launched an assault on Dragonstone.
    Jon didn't change at all after his death, except for becoming a stereotypical hero. Daenerys is still an idiot, Jaime took way too long to leave Cersei, Margaery and Tommen were killed off. Cersei is a stereotypical villain and apparently isn't hated by her people after causing her own son, the king to commit suicide and killing the queen and her family. She even killed her own uncle and the Westerosi equivalent of the Pope.
    Bran was turned into a robot, Arya became an immortal superhero and Sansa is just there. Littlefinger became a mustache twirling idiot and Varys became a total boot licker with no plans of his own. They'll probably ruin the Golden Company as well now that they're bringing them into the show, which kinda sucks.

      Yeah, I feel really bad for both of them. Loras was thrown into the trashcan when they decided to change the High Sparrow plot and killed him off along with all the other great characters in King's Landing (Mace, Kevan etc). And Nymeria was canned when the showrunners got massive amounts of backlash from their season 5 Dorne storyline, then they did the even worse Dorne storyline from season 6 where they kill off Doran, Hotah and Trystane, turning the Sand Snakes into Kinslayers. When they got even more backlash from that, they just decided to forget about Dorne and kill off the Sand Snakes.

    1-5 tyrion - An genius intellect on par with Tywin Lannister, with an incredible wit and strategic mind that makes him incredibly dangerous.Also has compassion due to being downtrodden, and has a habit of talking too much. Has a unique story and motivations.
    Season 6-7 tyrion: An idiot who basically fails at everything he attempts. Gets schooled in war efforts by both his siblings on numerous occasions. Runs about telling everyone how smart he is, while sprouting rather unfunny lame jokes. Becomes Dany's Lapdog and does nothing of any interest on his own.

  • @Xearrik
    @Xearrik 5 років тому +1336

    I agree completely. They've show them selves to not really be good writers the more they diverge for the real story.
    They started to do the same old tropes that most tv shows do. Characters who were supposed to be smart suddenly become completely moronic, but everyone still claims they're smart in the show. I think one of the best examples of this was Petyr Baelish. He died the same way as Eddard Stark. He just blindly did things his way, and stupidly kept pushing stuff until he got killed. That's not how Petyr would have died. He was like some sort Judo master of manipulation. The writers were so proud of their selves for the scene where she accused Petyr. I don't know anybody who was surprised. I was watching that scene saying "No they are not about to do this..." and then they called his name, and I laughed openly at how moronic and predictable that whole scene was.
    They do this thing where they make all the characters around someone really stupid temporarily so they can say that the one person not being a moron is super smart. It's so frustrating to watch this show now. :(

    • @ivanramos7609

      My thoughts exactly. They also give in to public pressure. After the lash back from Sansa with Ramsey's wedding night, every season after, they made Littlefinger a plot device to strengthen her character while weakening him in the process. Him killing Lysa Tully with no plan in the show and leaving his fate entirely to Sansa's mercy? Him saving Jon Snow in Battle of the Bastards without securing a plan of his own elevation prior and then just begging Sansa? Whatever the fuck his plan was by turning Sansa and Arya against each other just so they could create the eye rolling predictable scene where they worked together to "outsmart" him..................................Also, the lashback with the Sansa and Ramsey change wasn't even warranted imo. In the books, fake Arya had it much worse. Also, how would it have gone down any other way with Ramsey who has already been established as piece of shit, without breaking suspension of disbelief. The show today functions like a typical cable tv show because of the people that complain about this. Last season literally felt like a badly written fanfiction. Also the current Starks are the worst rulers ever. They didn't even have a proper trial and executed a man over a seemingly delusional Bran Stark. I'll take Joffrey or Cersei any day.

      I'll watch it. It still has great production value at least, which can create cool scenes, there's just no substance and the writing hurts. Unfortunately, it will spoil the books so the ultimate outcome will be the same. I'd love to just wait and not have it spoiled but....season 3 wasn't even out when I finished book 5. I've kinda lost hope at this point. Even if this book releases next year (if we're lucky), the last book will take a lot longer I imagine.

    This is a symptom of a larger problem. Take the general Lannister-Stark plotline, which I'd say was the main driving conflict of Phase I. The political aspect of that is basically over after the Red Wedding. However, the aftermath of it is still very much present in the novels.
    For three books we had people going ''lol ned such naive! xD' and 'omg tywin so brutal and effective!'. Then Feast happens and we see how his entire house fucks itself to death before his corpse is even cold. The show gives us none of this. Jaime getting disillusioned with Cersei and war? Gone. Cersei going completely fucknuts? Gone. Tyrion being a miserable wretch? Gone.
    Then we get Dance and the complete vindication of Ned and the Stark ways. From the wild mountain clans to the ordinary houses to the Southron Manderlys, everyone loved Ned and the Starks so much that they're itching to rise for a dead and disgraced house. We get this perfect irony in that Ned left a better legacy than Tywin ever could have. In the show? One old lady saying 'The North remembers', then immediately getting flayed by Ramsay before he goes to brutally rape Sansa some more or whatever (while the rest of the North pays no mind).

    You want to talk about deflated characters? How about Jon Snow this season xD
    His whole character arch was built around the White Walkers and convincing people they exist and to join him and save the world from the apocalypse. He was resurrected to be Azor Ahai... then he doesn't even get to kill or even duel the Night King. Instead, it is killed by Arya, a character with no relation to the Night King and whom only just found out about the White Walkers....

      Seasons 2-4 of Game of Thrones have some problems. Some of them are, qarth, whitewashing of characters like Cersei and Tyrion, removal of Tysha, poor buildup to the red wedding, filler in seasons 3 and 4(crasters’s keep and theon’s torture), and villainising Stannis and not giving him enough screentime or devolopment. I know this all this has to do with me being a “book purist” but none of D&D’s changes are really well written or engaging compared to the book. Personally, I think only the first season of the show did ASOIAF justice. I’ve currently watched all of season one and half of season two of Breaking Bad, and so far I think it’s the stronger show.

      @@backstabbingscumbag6657 I don't think they're perfectly adapted. Most changes I think are annoying, like the House of the Undying like you said.
      But Breaking Bad isn't perfect either. It doesn't have a source material to compare it to, so I think people are more forgiving. It's less ambitious. I think the seasons are often longer than they should be. Some scenes are kinda boring and others are really exciting, yet these end very quickly, that leaves me unsatisfied, whereas in Game of Thrones I consistently feel invested even if that's two people talking in a dark cell.
      It's true that Breaking Bad didn't drop in quality like Game of Thrones did after season 4, the last season is the best in my opinion, but it still felt like they left too much to be wrapped up in the last couple of episodes (which are the most intense ones, one strong moment after another). Don't wanna hate, just elaborate why I would have said GoT is better at the time.

    • @efffvss
      @efffvss 5 років тому +11

      That's the weird thing. Dany 'had to fail' (but then not really, as she still ends S7 having the advantage vs Cersei) because they'd stacked the deck too damn hard in her favour pre S7. All the Dothraki, the richest House in the 7 Kingdoms, the Kingdom probably least touched by the previous wars and strife, a whole lot of Unsullied, a good chunk of the Greyjoy's fleet AND 3 Dragons? They had to pull some BS to even up the score, otherwise 'bankrupt Lannisters, the Crownlands and the Tarlys' just get steamrolled, and there's no struggle and plot.
      Tyrion's advice wasn't actually that 'bad'. It all made sense from a 'I want to rule this land, not conquer and devastate' perspective. His comments about being viewed as 'foreign pillaging invaders' are vindicated when that's the exact argument used by the Lannisters to sway the Tarlys away from Highgarden (so one would assume they weren't the only House swayed in such a manner). His plan only failed because Euron could pull another fleet out of his magic space hole and teleport between Dorne (ish), KL and Casterly Rock at will, plus the Tyrells going from 'we're the real power keeping the King on the throne' to 'surprise Lannisters, we can't fight and are dead' almost literally between episodes. The plot holes ended Dany's allies, not Tyrion's ideas.

      oldenvye6432 firing Tyrion isn’t very sound logic just because their plans didn’t work. There are more forces at play. They hadn’t counted on the Lannister army being pulled out of casterly rock to take down high garden. That was like the only point she failed the past season. Do all of your plans work out when you want them to? No of course not.

    • @s.w.d4010
      @s.w.d4010 5 років тому +4

      efffvss Ummmm.....Tyrion’s plan was awful and made absolutely no sense. He shouldn’t have been made Hand of the Queen to begin with. If Tyrion’s plan is to starve the city (which would take years and kill more people) why wouldn’t Daenerys go to Highgarden? I’m not even getting this from the books the show has made it clear that Highgarden supplies all the food to King’s Landing. Dragon Stone is an island with no resources (again the show makes that clear) if the plan is to control the food supply the Reach is the obvious place to go. It makes zero sense for Daenerys to leave such a valuable Castle and location undefended. Season 7 was a fucking mess.

    • @efffvss
      @efffvss 5 років тому

      Yes it was, but that isn't because Tyrion's plan was bad. It's because the entire series became an illogical mess.
      Now I can't remember of the top of my head if the plan was for Dany's forces to fully starve out the city (which wouldn't take years, it takes years to starve properly supplied fortresses with small garrisons, not cities of half a million+ people) or put in under Siege for a later assault. But either way the point was to have Westerosi forces (Dorne and the Tyrells/Reach) do it, not 'foreign invaders'. And siege/starvation are more accepted, less of a culture shock for the country than 'burn the Capital down with Dragonfire, but Dany's a benevolent ruler, honest'. Why would Dany need to go to Highgarden? House Tyrell held Highgarden, and were declared for Dany. Team Targaryen did hold the Reach. The 'mistake' was nobody realising the Tyrells couldn't actually fight to save their lives, despite apparently being the 'power behind the throne' for the last 4 or so series. And that's not Tyrion's fault.
      The only real 'mistake' Tyrion made was not anticipating that the Lannisters wouldn't defend Casterly Rock with their full force. Which imo is hardly a 'he should be fired' offence.
      If you want to slate Tyrion, the 'let's go capture a Wight' plan is far more stupid than the initial 'how to seize the throne with an eye to holding it' plan. Or him not mentioning 'just marry Jon Snow' to get around the whole 'bend the knee' vs 'don't wanna' crap. Especially as the need for a political marriage was the reason the show used for Dany leaving Daario in Meeren in S6. Someone should've remembered that.

    • @lluewhyn
      @lluewhyn 5 років тому +2

      I've heard that the big problem is that they removed Aegon and tried to replace him with Cersei as Dany's main opponent in Westeros. Problem is, with Cersei's plotline to date, she shouldn't be a credible foe to Daenerys because no one should be following her. Plus, Daenerys has so many advantages. So, to keep the drama going, they have to have Daenerys make tons of stupid mistakes to avoid it being a curb stomp battle, and to give Tyrion something to do, they have him make those mistakes for her.

  • @mephistolordofhatred1258

    D&D are so dumb that they can't keep fully developed characters IN CHARACTER. After season 4 we're given "D&D's version of Tyrion". We're shown his sachems, whits and humor but in reality he's failing at everything with no consequences. He makes a deal with slavers, they attack anyway and Danny is just cool with that. Tyrion's plans cost Danny most of her fleet, three of her allies and Unsullied are stranded. She just gets a little pissed. His last plan almost costs Danny her last ally, gets one of her dragons killed, accomplishes nothing with Cersei AND gets the Night King past the wall. Nobody seas nothing? He's still hand of the queen?
    With that in mind Tyrion had more reasons to get killed/executed in season 7 than Littlefinger. But Tyrion is the fans favorite and someone needs to die so it better be Littlefinger, in the stupidest way possible I might add. Fan service all the way.
    People just need to stop looking at GoT as TV adaptation of ASOIAF and consider it more in the lines of "TV show based on ASOIAF". Because adaptation stopped ling time ago and at this point they're just using that world to make shit up.

      It's the same for Book Dany too, she is arguably the best character in the books but D&D butched her arc . Watching Arya escape and doing backflips was like watching lara croft trying to escape a giant monster in tomb raider. Arya became an arrogant little twat over night, taking on beast like brienna and fighting her to a draw. What a complete joke

      The first 4 seasons Arya and Tyrion were the two most popular and loved characters. Now Arya just walks around with that stupid smirk on her face killing everyone. I remember the days when Arya was pure gold every time she was paired with another character. Arya/Ned was gold, same with Arya and Sansa. Arya and Gendry, Arya and Tywin, Jaqen, Syrio, Gendry, Hot Pie and of course the fucking Hound. Hell, even her scene with the terrible actor Kit was amazing. Now the writing is so bad she is trash with everyone else

    I think what you mentioned about Daenerys summarizes everything that has gone wrong with the show in comparison with the books. In the first book, we had 9 POV characters and whilst we lost some, by the seventh we have 31. In the show, we had a similar number in season one, now the three MAIN characters are Tyrion, Daenerys and Jon... that's it, and they are so watered down that it hurts. Daenerys is a Mary Sue if ever I've seen one, Jon is as dull as rocks and it seems like all the show writers saw in Tyrion is "comic relief". As for what they did to my BOY Euron....

    Besides the overall drop in quality of the writing and some of the even worst casting decisions, the usage of Tyrion after season 5 has been the most disappointing experience for me watching Game of Thrones.
    He just doesn’t do anything important anymore. He’s basically been delegated to being a lapdog for Dany or Jon Snow. Which I get why they’re important. But game of thrones was an ensemble series with such a wide cast of characters. By focusing so hard on them over everyone else, it really diminished the rest of the cast and it brought the whole series into a more conventional fantasy realm of clear cut heroes and villains that Martin intentionally wanted to avoid.
    And there was no character that was hurt more then Tyrion.

      I agree the show has definitely degraded into a more traditional Tolkien style high fantasy but in the show runners defense grrm always set it up to do that with his ice and fire prophecy and the constant threat of the big bad white walkers. Sure it could be done better but I don't see grrm figuring out how to write his ending without falling somewhat into the good vs evil formula. Maybe that's why he's never going to finish the series.

    This has been one of the most annoying problems I've had with the show, after the Dorne plot. Maybe even before that, since I care more about Tyrion than anyone else.
    They did the same to Varys. He's lame now too. And Littlefinger as well.
    [ADWD/TWOW Spoiler Alert] I mean, do you remember the Kevan chapter at the end of ADWD? Varys got him and Pycelle killed. That was awesome.
    And what Littlefinger is doing in the Vale. Oh. My. God. It's brilliant, and Sansa's chapters there are always an amazing read.

    If David Benioff and Dan Weiss were not going to take to see the story through properly like they said they would, WHY the hell did they even sign up for this!? Did those idiots even see how gigantic the books are!? The only book that wasn't out during season 1's production was *A Dance with Dragons* Book 5, but that book is SHORTER than *A Storm of Swords* Book 5!

      One thing that stuck out to me during the early seasons is that D&D didn't want the actors to read the books, they flat out told them not to. And the more popular the show got, the more they started to deviate from the source material. Reading their interviews, it's like they thought they were smarter that Martin and that they could tell the story better.

    • @admontblanc
      @admontblanc 5 років тому

      Agreed, in a case where you are producing something faster than the source can keep up with you have 2 choices.
      1. Play it out and let the source release more material so you don't run out of writing.
      2. Deviate it into an original adaptation so you don't have to wait for more writing material and deliver the story faster.
      It's still a great show as a whole, but it could have gone it's own way without becoming incredibly dumb in the process. My guess is that Martin got angry, either at D&D or HBO, and that's why he's no longer working directly in the show. If D&D ruined the story trying to make it look like they could come up with a better story, I think they are in for a hell of a ride. Ultimately it all plays out in Martin's favour though, main goal was to attract more readers to his novels, which was achieved with great success. He can now sit back knowing that his books are set for success and with a much more consistent plot overall than the adaptation. He likely already finished TWoW some time ago and likely will announce printing date soon after the last season finishes airing, that would be a masterful move both in marketing and pure wit. But even in the case that he simply struggled to polish the book enough for printing all this time along, and that we may still need to wait some 10-15 years for the last book, it will still be all worth it.

    Since Tyrion was a fan-favourite D&D were absolutely terrified into making him into the Tryrion from book 5, as he's really unpleasant since he's at his lowest point. They don't respect their audience enough to give them a good story. They throw out the shallow plot to appeal to the lowest common denominator and with Tyrion all they succeeded in doing is halt his character development completely. Tyrion in book 5 is going through a catharsis that needs to happen in order for him to develop into the person he will need to be for the coming war with the Others. D&D are too stupid to understand book!Tyrion's character progression, they view him as Saint Tyrion, who has no flaws and has never done anything wrong. Even if they did see his flaws, they don't have the talent to replace his missing arc with something substantial.

You can't make 4 more seasons after season 7, they would have needed to decide to NOT fuck up the story multiple seasons back with cutting out shit, and more or less planned on making like 12-13 seasons from the onset. Them going off script to write their own shit is what fucked the show and it is the reason they more or less have to end it now. It would be unnatural to drag it out now that it's already been rushed so much, and they also know that their story is shit and want it to end fast before anyone has time to realize how terrible this show has become so their numbers don't go down too much.

    I like to believe Tyrion is kind of learning from his father's rule. When Tywin was alive and in charge he pretty much did EVERYTHING and look at what happened to Westeros when he died, it all fell to pieces. My fan fiction is he's letting Dany learn on her own and simply advising her so she learns instead of just having someone do everything for her, that way if anything happens to him the entire plan doesn't fall to pieces like it did when Tywin died.
    Also it makes sense for him to take a back seat with Dany, when he first shows up he's literally the son of her, former, most powerful enemy Tywin and she's trusted others to take full command before and been betrayed by them. While he's in Essos he tries to kinda rule in her stead, but because of his up bringing does kind of worse then Dany did, as his solution not only annoyed the masters, but it also annoyed Dany's allies and inner circle. Then literally the first thing Tyrion does when they hit Westeros is botch the invasion, lost three of her strongest allies, and she's furious to the point where she tells him to basically shut up, gets on Drogon, and deals with it her way.
    The main reason Tyrion had power in the first few seasons is he listens to what people want, and tries to give it to them, which in Westeros is easy, as most people there are motivated by their desires and provided you can figure out what those are and how to help them accomplish them will get you power. In Essos and with Dany he can't really do that, as he has no solution to the slavery issues that Dany's allies want to back, as it doesn't align with their desires. And when it came to invading Westeros, he tried to get her the quick victory she wanted, but underestimated Jaime, I would say Cersi but let's be honest Jamie's the combat brains in House Lannister and is the one who learned the tactics from Robb while Cersi sat in the Red keep crying, and lost the initial invasion battles, and the majority of Dany's allies and armies at that point almost immediately into the war.
    So it's not that he's "not interesting" it's that his way of doing things and how he actually gets his power and how he actually accomplishes things don't work with Dany's conquests or desires. Remember she was ousted from her home because some jerkwad had an issue with her brother loving the same girl he did, and the girl choosing rhaegar over robert. I would be pretty pissed and wanting my throne/home back too.

    Totally agree with your video. He really isn't that great a character in the show now. He's got plenty of flaws, and there were unlikeable aspects to Book Tyrion, but that's what makes him a well developed character. He's got good and bad traits and is a very flawed human being in some ways and great at other things.
    It's not just a mere nitipick about a few things that happened in the show. It's also not a case of book fans who can't deal with the adaptation process. In fact there are plenty of people that are show only viewers (I know because many of my co-workers have never read the books) have also criticized things about the TV show despite the fact we all still enjoy it overall and can't wait to see the final season. It's just inconsistent writing ability on the part of the showrunners. They also don't know how to write scheming characters because there are things that Littlefinger does in Season 5 onwards that makes no damn sense. This on top of the internalized misogyny written into some of the female characters on the show (i.e. Arya & Lyanna Mormont). So yeah I also call BS on the idea that the problem with Tyrion stems from wanting to make Daenerys better for feminist reasons.

    The way Charles Dance delivers his speech and becomes just a bit emotional in his voice as he says "that was my fathers sigil and his father before him" What an actor !!!

    I was shocked he won the Emmy over NCW for a second time...just goes to show these award shows are pure 💩 I’m not saying he’s a bad actor but season 7 was his absolute WORST performance ever...ughhhh

      Steph Snow.
      Goes to show that the people who've been saying that the Emmies have become worthless are right. I don't think I'd have given any awards to season 7 but if you wanted to do that Lena or Nicolai should have been awarded.

      Maybe they gave it to him this season because they regretted not giving it to him in previous seasons. I can’t think of any other logical explanation.

      It wasn't even a bad performance, there was just nothing to act to...

      Absolutely. Tyrion was just sort of there this season. Even his reunion with Cersei, great though it was, didn't really relate to anything else that was happening.

    It was very obvious when they ran out of source material and had to wing it.

    "I don't like to have my intelligence insulted"
    This quote is going right in my book of great quotes, along with quite a few quotes from book Tyrion.

    No time to write interesting and compelline scenes or dialogue for Tyrion. That time and energy can be better spent dedicated to YAAAAAASSSS QUEEN!

    You don't have to hold back Quinn, you can tell us what you really think 🤣 ... Seriously though, enjoyed the video, oh and you had several quotable rants in there that were just awesome 😁 I audibly busted out laughing several times as you slammed D and D 😂 I loved it!
