  • In this episode, we recall the Top Five Biggest Goliath Groupers ever caught on BlacktipH. Number Five was an estimated 400+lb goliath grouper caught fishing with NFL Linebacker Sam Barrington. Number Four was an estimated 500+lb goliath grouper that I caught in 2014 using a handline. At the time, this was the largest goliath grouper I've ever caught. Number Three was a truly monster goliath grouper caught by my buddy Trace Frieden. This fish weighed well over 600lbs! Number Two is currently the largest goliath grouper I've ever caught on rod and reel. This fish weighed more than 600lbs! The biggest goliath grouper ever caught was with my friend Max McKinley. This fish was scary big and must have weighed between 650-700lbs! This grouper literary weighed more than the hull of the boat we caught it on.

You don't have the gear he has, the boat and the crew to make those catches. Probably this is just a group effort and they all get paid while he gets all the credit in the video for showmanship.

My idea of fishing tackle as an open face reel and 4 to 8 lb. test. lol. Whenever I see this kind of fishing, I am almost more amazed at the tackle than the fish! How can you possibly afford this stuff? Let alone the boat?? Crazy.

For 19 long years I have wondered what my ex-husband and I encountered on a trip to Mexico. It terrified us both, and he drew in water, which led to him becoming quite ill. I am 99% positive this was what we saw! I think my dad even mentioned grouper as a possibility, but this was back when information wasn't as readily available. I focused in on a different fish he mentioned. It probably influenced me when he shared his own terror of running into a large one unexpectedly. Sadly, he passed nearly 6 years ago, or I would call him rn. Missing him pretty bad tonight. His brother, my beloved uncle, died this past week and his beloved grandson graduated salutatorian. Friends announced to me I was getting a puppy while talking to my cousin. Got her on the anniversary of my wedding to my ex. The trip to Mexico was to celebrate our 10th anniversary. These were just a couple of the biggest things. In a few minutes I celebrate another birthday without him.
My ex and I don't communicate, but I saw him recently. Due to the nature of our being in the same room (serious medical emergency), he doesn't remember it. I'm still tempted to ask (our) daughter to show him a picture of this species of fish to close that 1% doubt.
Hm, sorry to anyone if they read that. This was also 30 years from my own "HS graduation". First dance recital that was fully open since Covid...and dealing with my mom's pain/health and slated date for a hip replacement. Tornado where that uncle lived near my cousin. Lost another caregiver. It's been a hairy, crazy month. No wonder I am thinking on the past so much. Time to take the puppy out. Time and life go on...
Until they don't. Life feels very short, especially having had such a trying beginning. Just as some things have seen some improvements, that I appreciate life and feel...content...I realize I'm going into the sunset of my life. I know I will never date or marry, but I am forging a beautiful life with loving friends and developing interests. I realized the breed of puppy I have may outlive me or be with me until I'm closing in on 70.

I'm lucky enough to have my dad still but we lost my uncle John to suicide in early April of this year. It's always hard. I've lost very important people and it never gets easier eveytime. I'm sorry for your loss

From the rod and reel, and commercial boat nets, since 1900, the biggest Goliath grouper ( and cousin giant black sea bass) records, rank like this : 4 ft long is 150 lb. 5 ft long is 300 lb (matured). 6 ft long is 400 lb. 7 ft long is 500 lb. 8 ft long is 650 lb. 9 ft long is 800 lb. Since the protection on the west coast started from 1982, we expect in this last 40 years (they live to 80 yr old) some big 6 ft fish could be 10 ft now and wt close to 1,000 lb., a conservative estimate. 🤔
