The fact he knows the swipe gesture is incredible. Animals are super intelligent
They're us. Common ancestor. Just a different evolutionary trail for the last little while. We just came away with the keys is all; otherwise we would be the ones behind the glass looking out.
He kept touching his forehead and ear as if he wanted to say “I got it” and “I can’t hear”. Whatever it is it’s simply amazing. Thanks for sharing.
The sign he was making with his hand from his ear to mouth is ASL for hearing or deaf, he also seemed to sign pretty and I like or love it.
@@jtalbot34 i agree
OMG. He was telling the older girl she is pretty and touching his heart to say he loves her, I wish she tapped her heart back to him too. It was so smart of him to look at photos and sign a swipe motion for her to change the photo to the next one...so sweet and so smart! A gentle giant. ❤

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard
Jelani genuinely enjoys looking at the pictures! He is excited when he sees somebody he knows, and yes he does remember people ;-) He loves the company of hanging out with people and looking at their phones. The keepers have said that Jelani once had, if memory serves, a TV in his bedroom in the back. He did not look at it until people were around him! He genuinely enjoys human companionship!! He is an amazing being! I hope everyone gets the chance to hang out with him at least once!! It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and you will never forget it!! You can feel his peaceful Soul when you hang out with him!! It is indescribable!! Much love from the Bluegrass State!!
I hate to see an animal like him in captivity, but it's a good thing for people to be able to see them in person. To fully appreciate how magnificent they are and how important it is to support conservation efforts in the wild. The gorilla at the San Francisco zoo was my favorite exhibit by far when my son was little. Although he didn't didn't look too happy. He was bored out of his mind you could tell.
What's going on with his shaky hand? It looks like Parkinson's.
He looks like one smart dude to me.
@Glory Be To God Amen ca
Is this here in Kentucky?????
He likes that one girl and they told her to move. He wasn't having it and left. He came back when she sat back down. Amazing how intelligent he is. He isnt just an animal to take pictures by. He felt disrespected. Its so obvious.
He was just bored lol
When it comes to a silverback its all about respect, they are very smart, look up Michael the gorilla he was with koko the gorilla he learned sign language and on his own he told his caregivers about his mother being shot or murdered can't remember exactly

I always have mixed feelings when I see an animal trapped and contained in a zoo. Part of me feels for the poor animal' confinement. But another part of me feels great relief that they are protected from poachers, and preditors
RUBBISH. THEY SHOULD BE IN THE WILD.
Monics Hastings *predators*
Ditto
I never have mixed feelings seeing Apes and Chimps in the Zoo. They live healthier lives because they are being cared for. When you have seen one too many videos of wild baby chimps, monkeys, apes dying because they were hit by a car or they caught a cold you'll think the same way I do.
They should be in the wild it’s their flipping nature dude. Zoos are just prisons
I like the girl respecting the gorilla, she's like " i got you ma dude" and the gorilla actually felt the respect . While other children try to put their hands or phones just for attention or a pic he doesn't give em the respect back .
You can see how gentle and loving he/she is, sitting with the kids like they're having a show and tell moment.😆🤣♥️👏
Yep!! And when she shews a flie she's thinking ,,,"hmmmm lil ones actually got something very interesting today " and smiles.... Such a tender moment she's having, and the pure joy she's having ACTUALLY INTERACTING with those children!!!!!!!
Poor thing is locked in a cage, how would you like it if those roles were reversed and it was humans in those cages.
@@deborahwhitney9427 I TOTALLY agree with you! That's why I don't go to zoos or any places where animals are confined...I can't stand it.😔
It's a silverback - male. He's the alpha stud in the group.
He's bonding with the young lady with the glasses on her head. He didn't want anyone interfering with them. Too cute!
He just wanted to interact with her.
Yes!!.. it looks like that indeed..😯😯
And yet that unruly brat kept interfering ... probably encouraged by her parents 🙄
This is language. This is two members of two different species communicating with each other. Amazing.
Without the glass
Thats call communicating
Well were in the same family so not surprising.
@The Logical Twit true...every living being as a soul...it doesnt matter who is stronger, or smarter...EVERY LIVING BEING HAVE A SOUL...all the souls are equal, no matter the body or size
Yes, it is! Some years ago it was discovered 2 or 3 gorillas learned sign language. This gorilla must have learned to communicate what she wanted by imitating humans. Neat!
It's so fascinating
There's plenty going on in that brain. Magnificent creature
Of course there is, why wouldn’t there be?
The video of the young mother bringing her newborn to the glass where a gorilla matriarch was sitting, watching people from a short distance is still my favourite. She brought the baby to the glass and held him up and the gorilla mother came to the glass and motioned with such affection, touching her own face and pointing to baby's face. Then she fetched her own small baby and held him in her arms, facing towards the other mum. There was so much love and deep interaction between the two mothers, the gorilla lying back and just gazing at the little human and making gentle, affectionate signs. As the commenter said above it was so clearly language between two maternal beings.

60 Minutes did an episode on Koko the female gorilla, when Penny was advancing in years. Apparently other scientists were still trying to claim that Koko's 1000 word vocabulary and ability to understand 2000 words was a fluke or fake. This is reprehensible, considering how Koko would make up words herself (Penny's ring was a "finger bracelet"; Koko's deeply beloved kitten she had named
"All Ball" because of how he looked when curled up asleep- his head and body looked like two balls stuck together which she thought was a lovely joke), her capacity for grieving and need for people to be inside her enclosure with her when interviewing her, which was not allowed for some reason and which upset Koko terribly.
She had an enormous sense of self and self respect, her favourite person was Robin Williams who visited her and played Tickle Me. There was so much still to learn about animals from Koko. I don't know why they kept her apart from interviewers at the end. It must have hurt her feelings so much.
When the 60 Minutes anchor told her he thought she was beautiful- she just turned her head away and back again, and signed glumly- "So why can't all of us be together in my enclosure? All of us.
Do. Do. Do."
You abject dolt… you haven’t the first clue regarding evolutionary biology nor do you have even the first inkling regarding cognitive sciences…
Animals don’t understand our language. PERIOD. END OF STORY.
They don’t know how to communicate with us AS YOU THINK THEY DO. PERIOD. END OF STORY.
You’re conflating how TRAINABLE animals are with an ability to actually understand our language & communicate at our level to ANY degree.
When animals like Koko were actually TESTED in a legitimate method, THEY ALL FAIL MISERABLY at “understanding” language.
However when promotional videos were made, THEY MADE IT APPEAR AS THOUGH THE MONKEYS UNDERSTOOD.
THEY DISN’T. IT;S CALLED YOU GOT DUOED BY PEOPLE WITH AN AGENDA.
What’s reprehensible is that you’re a GD adult and you fell hook, line, and sinker for it.
And that’s not only wildly uneducated to do, but it’s also detrimental to animals, because what humans project onto animals when they do this, almost always is ABSOLUTELY NOT correct, BECAUSE ANIMALS DON;’T HAVE DEVELOPED FRONTAL LOBES AND THUS DO NOT POSSESS THE CRITICAL & EXECUTIVE FACULTIES THAT WE DO, AS WE DO.
So when humans erroneously apply our language to theirs, EVERYTHING YOU BELIEVE THEY’RE SAYING THEY ACTUALLY AREN’T, and THAT is not only unfair to do to them, but also many times can be and is dangerous to them.
Your imbecilic desire to anthropomorphize animals because you’re unfulfilled in life is an insult to the welfare and safety of these animals worldwide, and quite frankly, is exactly why so many dopey humans get killed approaching these animals in the wild, thinking they’re just like us and just want to be loved.
FFS, grow up.
I KNOW!!! AND PPL WANNA SAY ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE HAS SOMETHING SPECIAL!?!?!! (all the while we don't even have natural habitat available for ANIMAL intelligence!!)
These magnificent, gentle creatures actually move me to tears...

I know many people believe animals shouldn't be in zoos, however I consider them absolutely vital for preserving certain endangered species and teaching kids about animals and how to love them. It's how I learned to love and respect them as a kid. If a child can visit a zoo and see just how amazing and intelligent these lovely creatures are, they are more likely to grow up wanting to protect them rather than harm them. This video is a perfect example.
very true
You can teach kids how to love animals and how to protect them without taking them out of their home in the wild and putting them in cages or enclosures.

Not every gorilla is getting mad by eye contact, some of them don't care and some of them are getting used to it because of too many people looking for so long time.
Instead.. if you go on a trip with guide guys in the jungle and you encounter a silverback gorilla, the first things that you need to do.. is to lay to the ground low on your legs and to avoid the eye contact as much as possible...

It was the most moving sight! I couldn't stop watching Jelani interacting with these children. What a highly intelligent, kind and majestic creature. Jelani patiently watched the cell phone images. Then gave them 'speaking' hand gestures to signal his interest, but the public can't respond to him. The zoo does an amazing job looking after all their animals and providing enrichment programs. Yet, it's so tragic they can't remain in the wild. All due to illegal poaching, game hunting and loss of habitat. I think Jelani sits near the glass, as he's bored stiff. Gorillas are so close to human DNA. I think primates' emotional and cognitive abilities are far superior to ours. Like whales and dolphins. These gorillas live such long lives in captivity. If only there could be large sanctuaries built for them, instead of enclosures...
I think the humans entertain them. I like to see footage where people do magic tricks for them, perform yo-yo tricks, show them the contents of their purses, etc.
Your absolutely right......what's wrong is our world in general.........

They smartttt
I worked with gorillas for 13 years. That they go so much farther than humans in trying to connect in a respectful and meaningful way still amazes me -- not because they aren't incredibly intelligent, but because they are often repaid with ridicule and disrespect. We need to ask, as many people below have, if these people, so like us, should be held against their will when they clearly are so connected, smart, forgiving, and self-aware.

Dawn Prince .
Dawn Prince break my heart seeing intelligent being taken against her will it is very sad and disturbing.
Dawn you are so lucky to have had that amazing experience.......we have come a long way since hunting them for trophy's
Animals don't have the concept of self-created world as people do. People are unnecessarily full of pretense, welcome themselves to the concept of how others should live, and desperately assert their own concepts to have their own sense of living the life that leads to the success they imagine that they are supposed to have or think they deserve to have. Animals don't have all that senseless crap to get in the way of connecting with other social beings.
I remember when I was a kid when we went to zoo and showed chimps the zoo guide. There was only one sitting near the glass and in seconds there were all three watching. They totaly understood when we showed them their photos in the book and completely freak out when we showed them elephants photos. Quite jawdropping experience, primates are seriously intelligent.
The strange thing is that gorilla can memorize things faster than humans
Yeah, it‘s obvious on his reaction, the girl is swiping too slow. She could go 3-4 pics per second. So he wouldn‘t be bored
Chimps can also do that. They are more advanced than us when it comes to memorization and expressions.
Bc consciousness isn’t in the way
I like how most of the children are so calm, quiet and attentive. It's like a family with their gorilla elder.

He’s doing sign language, that’s great! What a sweetie.I think that he’s saying that is him , If there were no glass, everyone would be screaming
This is both fascinating and heartbreaking at the same time. The Gorilla is sitting there, interacting with the girls and signing, clearly understand HOW the device works and what he wants it to do and asking them to make it do it and the girls clearly understand what the gorilla wants as well. It's an incredible thing to watch, two different species meeting in the middle and interacting with one another as individuals. Then you remember that this beautiful, intelligent creature is a captive who will never know what it's like to be free. All that intelligence is trapped in a glass display for humans to stare at. I sincerely hope they aren't self aware enough to understand .
I thought the earlier phone shower was even sadder. That girl understood what the gorrilla wanted because she took the time to care and connect. The earlier ones had clearly seen a youtube clip of it & did it for self gratification with no interest whatsoever in the gorilla's feelings - that's sad! They just walked off in the middle of the gorrilla trying to connect with them
Zeynab Uthman i get it.... Your right and it's sad. We don't visit zoos and such i watch this stuff far as being an animal lover. But i get it. #letthemgo
Zeynab Uthman did you ever think that maybe they assume that we are in captivity as well? They don't know what's behind the glass. I wish they had a chart or video showing the signs the gorillas know. That way, the kids could communicate with them. I wouldn’t be surprised if all zoo gorillas are being taught sign language these days.
It would be SUPER fun for the kids to learn sign language too! “What did you do this weekend?” “Well, I spent some time chatting with my gorilla friend. You?”

So amazing the power they have and they can be as calm as anything we are the animals
Did something similar with a gorilla at a zoo in colorado. Moments like these are something you dont forget. I'm sure it makes their day to.
I agree that this is both a happy and sad moment. It makes my heart happy to see the moment of clear communication between that young lady and the gorilla, but immensely sad to know that she has spent her entire life in captivity. I am not suggesting she doesn't have a good life surrounded by people that love her and take care of her, but she is not where she should be.. I hope there is a day when our curiosity doesn't interfere with the lives of the many beautiful creatures on this planet.
Lisa Rankin "not where she should be" people can be a little misinformed. How do you know this gorilla didn't have a sickness or disease and needed to be cured in captivity. Did you know it's not easy as just releasing the animal back into the wild like throwing trash back in the bin? Sheesh open your mind
Lisa Rankin We all live in captivity.
Me,too
Clearly this gorillas has a curiosity about us as well - and is intelligent enough to realize that it is much easier to communicate with children than adults and that children instantly attribute intentionality the gorilla's gestures, while adults have more difficulty even noting the gestures in many cases - or the adults would not need cages - they would be communicating instead.
Lisa Rankin in the wild getting killed by poachers?

Where are the parents or teachers when the smaller kids are hitting & kicking the glass?. I know the kids don't get it but the adults should step in & stop the little kids rude behavior towards the animals. Come to think of it, the little kids acted more like animals than the gorilla did. People get your munchkins under control, especially in a place where there are animals that should be respected.
At least the gorilla is free to go and csn decide whether to sit near the glass or go somewhere else
It’s probably nice having some people he can communicate with in a way.

I actually don't feel very badly for gorillas in captivity because their regular lives in the wild are very similar. Plus poaching is just out of control. At least in captivity there's hope for future generations to be more cognizant of animal conservation. I don't personally like going to zoo's because they feel like prisons for animals, but I understand the role they play in education and conservation. All well and good until you see what the poachers do to these magnificent creatures who are defenseless. They are protected here until you do gooders realize the need to eliminate the savages who slaughter them.
@@TR5T Ease up! I did nothing to them. I was just wondering how they saw us.
Thiis video put a smile on my face for hours.👍Thanks
Anthony Coyle Awesome!! Same here, much love!!
I truly believe that he would hug that little girl!
Then you would be wrong. One thing that people tend to do is think that animals in captivity are cute and cuddly. Just ask his handlers how often they turn their backs to him.
He would hug, just before he ripped her face off
@@alexandereisen3486 You're an idiot. Gorillas are incredibly gentle creatures and there's literally 0 reports of them ever seriously harming or killing a human.
Gorilla seems like grand pa nd children are his grand children...beautiful..💓😘😘🥰💕
He's a fun loving big fella.
Look at that one child who won't get out of that woman's way! What a badly behaved kid!!
someone taught him sign. he is saying love a lot thats whwn he is tapping his chest..the text thing is a no brainer he is saying next next next..cute and sweet gorilla
She keeps rubbing or touching her nose as well. Not sure what, if anything that means.
So he was signing love?
J Roy isn’t it sweet...they connected on an emotional level...maybe he doesn’t mind getting to know the humans who come to stare at him..I remember, as a little girl , going to the fair and there was a side show once that we dared to go thru and one poor woman had extremely large feet...the result of a lymph system disorder..and they had her just sitting there and people came in and stared at her feet ..it was very awkward and I remember feeling so bad for her but I guess she did what she had to do to earn a living...
J Roy I was hope some one known some sighn yea I agree
Claire Byrne I know English he was saying oo oo stoopid human
OMG looks like he’s enjoying the kids and what they are showing him.!
That's exactly right Nilda! Jelani is well known at Louisville Zoo as being the most laid-back and gentle Silverback in The Bachelor group. He genuinely likes hanging out with us humans and gorillas alike ;-) It is beyond words to hang out with him!
One sentient being to another.. BRILLIANT!!!
He's curious like a kid
Jelani is the new Secretariat for Louisville ;-) he loves to pose and he knows he's a rockstar ;-) I hope everyone gets to meet him ;-)
Rude brat needs to sit down.
