It's seems like he internalized the narrative Bruno (and other assholes) push where if you just "don't react" than bigotry won't affect you. Which is so false, but it's really easy to fall into for a lot of marginalized people since it gives a false sense of control (if I can just learn the right mental state, this won't hurt anymore).

When the kid(s) said _"you're_ the one who told us it's okay" to Nick is so manipulative and cruel. This is bullying _and_ racism _and_ victim-blaming. I felt genuinely sick watching that.
Also, if someone says they don't care about something but then they come back saying they thought about it again, and they actually aren't okay with it then just _respect_ that. It's the same thing with consent for sexual stuff - you may feel okay with something at first but then later you realise are uncomfortable, and it's okay to communicate that and say no. And the other party should respect your change in consent, especially with something related to _your own_ life, body or identity.
The worst part is he was basically peer pressured into being ok with it the first time. It's not even that he thought about it and changed his mind. He was clearly not ok with it in the first place

However he is not trying to learn, he is trying to justify his own personal biases towards certain issues with race and while there isn't necessarily a problem with giving your own opinion on a topic he will completely disregard all other points or arguments given to him.

I really respect Nick’s parents trying to tell the kids genuinely why the word is hurtful and educating them effectively, even though some of the kids are talking over them. That’s a sign of a wonderful parent. Good on them, they seem lovely
Bruno knew his rap was offensive and he literally prepared arguments to say that he isn't racist and that he's the victim. He was actively trying to offend the black family and get a reaction. But, they all just refused to give him what he wanted.

The etiquette class kids were already a bunch of twats, but I was NOT prepared for what Nick had to go through.
I also want to condemn the showrunners for making him go to an etiquette class (which is NOT a normal thing for the vast majority of American white kids), because it introduced him to so much derision and denigrating from the get-go. Like Jordan said, it's basically a class to say "No, the way you normally act is WRONG and needs to CHANGE!"

But of course, it's not reality TV if the showrunners aren't constantly shitstirring for content.
Yeah I had to take etiquette classes as a really poor southern person and it’s not normal dude. They put him through it specifically to humiliate him. I remember the classes as a white person humiliated me because I was clearly from a different socioeconomic and cultural background. The people who attend these normally are whack as fuck. I only did it because my great grandmother paid for it and wanted me to have a better chance for university and scientific fields of study.
The scene with Nick was so incredibly heartbreaking. Oh my God. Holy shit that almost made me cry. It brought back so many flashbacks to moments in high school where people thought they were "edgy" or "cool" for being openly racist or trying to explain to me that I should "stop being so sensitive" after explaining to them that they can't say the n-word because they're white or sing it in a song just because the artist did it. The pain in Nick's eyes cut right into my soul. It reminded me of so many moments where people treated me like I was a zoo exhibit and just touched my hair and I didn't know what to say or how to go about a situation like that so I didn't say anything but it deeply bothered me. God, I hope that he's okay. Being on that show sure must've done a number on his mental health.
i feel bad for the kids too. you know those behaviors are learned and not innate, they learn that shit from their parents and friends and don’t have enough people straightening them out. they just have other white people around them enabling them and black kids who act like it doesn’t offend them because that’s all they can do without sounding “sensitive” or “aggressive.” it’s a lose-lose. like someone just needs to smack the dogshit out of that one kid and boom!!! he probably will never say that word again no matter WHAT “environment” he’s in, whatever the fuck that means. the dad warned him that would happen too. i know they are just kids and kids do not understand the implications and long term effects of their actions but that does not mean they shouldn’t be held accountable (or slapped so hard the racism leaves their body).
this whole series just sucks to watch. i hope nick and rose are okay and doing well as adults

Dude... Right. I gotta ask, what kind of state is the US in for this to be normal? I'm a white man living in South Africa, my family has lived here for at least 200 years now and I grew up living in a majority black society all my life. While there is a fair bit of racial tensions and some major cultural divides, we at least treat each other like people. Like damn dude. How can Americans possibly look at a black person and be so fascinated by your appearance that they want to pet you like an animal? I mean really, what kind of degenerate behaviour is that? Is it so foreign an idea there to just not mind people that look different or come from different cultures? Do they feel the need to explore some exotic obsession with anything that isn't the bland Caucasian culture or look they're used to? The way racism here differs from racism in the US fascinates and disturbs me. While we have plenty of resentments and paranoias going and forth here, it doesn't seem nearly as dehumanizing as the kind of racism over there.

God, this poor kid.
And I think the way they tried to talk to him afterwards was too aggressive. Instead of blaming him and getting mad at him for letting the kids say it, they should have explained it more and given him comfort. Because that “I don’t care” attitude is obviously a defense mechanism and you can tell that he is upset. By getting mad at him, it’ll make him more defensive instead of having that good teachable moment.

Seeing Nick fold to the kids bulling him for being black reminds me of when I was in high school, I was a popular guy on the Football team. I'm first generation American my parents are from Mexico and I have tan skin, brown eyes, and black hair. I fell in love with a beautiful cheerleader she was white blonde, blue eyes, and had freckles. She very clearly liked me, she held my hand, kissed me, called me babe all the stuff couples do, but then I asked her out to the movies and she said "oh I can't like you like that. My parents would never let me, you know because you're so dark, but I like you. You're cool." I remember just feeling sick to my stomach. It hurt worse than if she had just told me she didn't like me, because she liked me, except for my skin, no matter what I did or changed about myself she would never love me. I broke up with her on the spot and she spread a rumor that I dumped her because I was gay, I guess she wanted to get ahead of me outing that she was a racist or something. I started dating other girls almost immediately and just tried to ignore what happened, but part of me is always cautious around white women like I'm disarming a bomb or something now. It sucks knowing that there's always a chance that people won't like me just because of the color of my skin, or that one of the first things I think about when a woman turns me down is maybe it's just my skin. Race is one of those things you just try to ignore until you just bump into it. I used to try "being more white" and just ignore my roots as a Mexican, but I've grown to realize that some people are just going to hate you and that's okay, because at the end of the day we live our lives to be around people we love not to lose ourselves to the people that hate us.

It's honestly changed my perspective on white people saying the n-word around me. I personally haven't had a seriously racist experience yet nor has any non-black person said the nword around me, but I used to say that I wouldn't mind them using it as long as it's not purposefully used to upset/dehumanize me. but, after seeing the discomfort on Nick's face after those car and dress up scenes, i kinda saw myself in him and realized it'd still make me uncomfortable regardless of if I give "permission" or not. no white person should use that as an excuse to start making light of the word.

He said “I’m just singing the song you know I would never…” and I responded with “I know you aren’t racist. But don’t say it. Just do not” and he looked me in my eyes, dapped me up and said “my bad” and I never heard him say it again. Even went to a concert with him and he still never repeated the nword.

at my work about a year ago, there was this white girl who used the n-word in front of a black shift manager in convo with her hispanic boyfriend. she pulled basically pulled the "I have black friends" card by using her boyfriend's race and her "background" (someone who lives in her area confirmed the neighborhood was not rough at all) as an excuse.

this is spot on - being a minority literally surrounding by the majority as they “other” you is not the place most kids would feel safe confronting those issues. Also, Nick’s *trapped on a bus* for that entire clip so it’s not like he had an out to deescalate the situation

Technically making itself its own language while also being directly derivative and sharing a common base with a more popular form of the language. Essentially, makes it both its base language and its own separate language. There are several examples of this from all over the world, all types of Creole, AAVE, regional dialects, ect. These are all their own languages with unique sounds, words, and structures, just with a base language of something else.
The whole bullying session with nick was literally heart wrenching to watch. He seems like such a nice, genuine kid. Im so sad for him.

I've said this before but Bruno really is the personification of all white conservatives views on black people and it's so infuriating to watch. It's says a lot about Bruno that he will show a rap video he did (basically demonizing the black community) to black people, knowing they wouldn't like it, with the express purpose of trying to get a reaction out of them to further cement his view that black people are too sensitive and have a victim complex (which even if they did get mad it wouldn't prove his view) AND THEN when people are like "Why are you demonizing black people." he uses the "Well I never said black." just to show that he NEVER wanted to have discussions in good faith with ANYONE around him. Bruno really does make me sick.

One of the worst (and most real) parts of the scenes with Nick and the white kids is that, when he first reveals he’s black, you can tell that they’re trying reeally hard to not seem awkward or offensive. But then as it goes on, even for just ONE DAY, they get more and more comfortable being racist around him, til they’re straight up throwing the n word around. Once they realize Nick is powerless to stand up for himself, they completely drop their fake acceptance.
i feel like the fake acceptance started to go when nick made the mistake of saying that they could say the word, and that he wasn't uncomfortable with it. i feel really bad for him there, as it felt like he trusted them enough to say something like that, only to have it backfire on him so bad. i hope that wherever nick is now, i hope he's doing better.
Despite Nick saying it was OK, it definitely wasn't OK for those kids to say that word. I felt so bad for Nick here because he genuinely looked so uncomfortable the whole time. Those kids were so horrible to him... like with trying on his hats like it was a costume... not cool. How would they feel if someone invaded their personal space and impersonated them like a character? We can acknowledge differences and embrace who we are while still being respectful to ourselves and others.

The whole scene with Nick really hit hard for me. Sometimes when I'm with my family I put up with and enable transphobia and homophobia because I'm scared to see what happens if I try to stop it, so I can relate to feeling like you need to enable harmful bullshit to fit in or to be safe. And he looked so uncomfortable the whole time, I really hope he was okay after that.

I was homies with the one black kid in my school. I said something derogatory cause I heard kids say it all the time(when I was sleeping over at his house) and he broke down. Yup, I went to a school with mostly white kids from second grade to college. And it wasn’t until I was in my late 20s and I was out of those situations that I realized how much internalized racism I had in myself. Situations like nick was in was almost the norm for me so that scene was realllly tough to watch.
That whole scene with Nick deadass almost made me cry. As a black person (woman) it's just... it was hard to watch because this is GENUINELY how it feels being in a room full of white people. They just ask you questions, make fun of you and treat you like a fucking exhibit. Like you aren't a person. I will never NOT get mad at people who have a problem with Black people not being comfortable in a space where they're the only black person in a room or when they seek out other black people to be safe. It's just heartbreaking because he was so uncomfortable and basically begging them to stop and they thought it was FUNNY. It hurt. It hurt so fucking bad. I know how it feels to be the only black kid and being so uncomfortable in a situation where you just let them say the word and act like it doesn't bother you because you have no clue how to go about it. I know how it feels and it fucking hurts and to watch someone else go through it? It makes me wanna cry.

It is also just shocking to me that only one kid in the van said that the n word made her uncomfortable. It is very sad to see how the other kids ignored two people who were very clearly upset about this (even if one of them, ie Nick, hasn't fully processed what is going on or how he feels about it).
This entire show just makes me feel icky. I also don't understand why Bruno and the mom feel like they need to be "black" to go to an African American community or to experience their culture. I personally love learning about the culture of others. I won't pretend like I am a part of their culture or that I am an expert about it, I just think its neat, and am always glad when someone corrects me about something that I did not know about.

There are still similarities from what I've heard from Black people (both trans and cis), but I know it's not a one-to-one comparison.

i think when he said he didn't care he really thought that was the truth. sometimes when you're the "other" in a group you don't think it's going to bother you until people start to pick on you "as a joke". when i was a kid i always told people that i liked being "the weird kid" and that i didn't mind not being able to understand or relate to most kids, but looking back on it i can see that i was just trying to convince myself that it was fine. i just wanted to believe that if i didn't get visibly upset than maybe people would accept me more and not spend so much time trying to other me. of course it didn't work but i was just a kid desperate to feel accepted
obviously my experiences as a white person part of other marginalized groups aren't the same as the experiences of poc and shouldn't be seen as such but watching the kids gang up on nick like that while he just accepted it just really reminded me of what it was like in school letting people completely attack my existence because standing up for myself was dangerous and i just wanted people to like me and see me as normal and not an angry stereotype

I feel like that need to justify it to himself could push him in the wrong direction, but that was brutal. It was revealing how little time it took that whole class to go from polite discomfort to full 4chan.

It's especially funny to me cuz I feel like you can't accurately use makeup to look like another race. Skin tone isn't the only difference, it's also the shape, size, or placement of different features like eyes, noses, ears, teeth, etc. I'm not saying that a lot of stereotypes like that are right, obviously there's different people, but generally there are other differences besides skin tone so it just wouldn't work if all you did was put on different makeup.

I’ve learned that some people have no idea about how things were “back in the day” (even if “back in the day” was recently) and/or have very short memories. For instance, you might see someone online post something stupid like, “I remember back when you could sneeze on someone and them not think it was a big deal!” and think, “Um…that time never existed. Even back in medieval times sneezing on someone was still considered a big deal, and that never changed. There was never a time when sneezing on someone was socially acceptable. The ‘Ew, gross, somebody sneezed on me!’ mentality is not a new thing.”

But it WAS a different time. It being a time we lived through doesn't change that.
The fact that things were considered acceptable or just a bit controversial in 2006 are things we don't consider acceptable in 2023 anymore just shows that our values adapted as the world around us changed. It's a sign of growth imo, and a good thing, but we don't need to act as if that previous era didn't happen.
At least where I live, in 2006 no one even knew that there was anything wrong with the n-word, the concept of trans people didn't exist at all, and while homosexuality was familiar to most, anyone claiming to be bi was just considered unwilling to fully admit their gayness yet. Heck, it had only just been a few years since women had been granted full equal rights and there were still plenty of very loud voices about how that is deteriorating the very fabric of society.
It was really only thanks to the advent of the internet (which became popular and widespread around 2005-2008) that people learnt about the context of so many things and started going "oh, maybe we shouldn't do that anymore" or "wow, that is an actual thing, huh?".
So I don't really blame these kids for their behaviour, but I certainly would if now, at 30, they still act or think the same as they did back then.

I went to school in a predominately white town and this video helped me understand why a lot of my “friendships” and interactions went they way they did. I had a lot of interactions that were similar to Nick’s, and there were a number of them that made me feel uncomfortable, and I couldn’t understand why, and I think I also didn’t wanna rock the boat. Hearing you guys talk about what was going on with Nick really helped me put words to what I experienced, and it’s something I’ve been struggling with for a bit. Thank you guys

The emotional toll this show causes when watching is so freaking taxing. I couldn’t imagine being the actual family in this show. oh god i just wanted to give nick a hug, the poor guy he was so uncomfortable with the awful racist bullying he was subjected to, but it took him a while to consciously realize that it was racist? im not sure but i feel like he was subjected to the idea of "black people overreacting to racism and making a big deal about it for no reason", so he distanced himself from it, told himself and others that "it's just a word" and that he doesn't mind. it was a coping mechanism he developed from living in the US as a black person, and it was good to see the barber do such a great job at opening his eyes

yeah up until this ep nick seemed like he was mostly not getting too much shit directly, like it was bruno and the mom being racist to adults in a way that was like. pretty fucking bad but didn't feel like you were watching a kid get fucking scarred
This episode is really hard to watch because usually the “White” sections of the show are more tame to counteract the Bruno parts but now there’s insensitivity on ALL fronts so there’s no break from the awfulness that is the racial divide in the show.

that reminds me of this one time i was on vc in an online game and this random guy was really annoying trying to "set me up with his sister" but when i told him that i had a boyfriend he was like "you don't sound like a [f slur]" and i felt my skin chill, like i had to act like i didn't give a shit until he saw i wasn't gonna react and left the lobby but i still think about that to this day

Yep. As a bi person who uses the label gay often, my friends are kinda hurtful sometimes. I feel like I can't talk to them about it tho, because I don't want them to think I'm too 'sensitive'
