I thought this is the standard on how all American kids are trained musically. I had this little dream of moving to USA to do music when I grow up( performing music by women was illegal in my country and publishing music is a very hard process, most types of music aren’t allowed either). So I thought I would never be able to compete with that, and I decided to become an architect instead. I’m happy with my career now, and I still make music as a hobby, but it’s so funny to me how a silly decision by film makers to make a movie more visually-appealing completely changed my future!
It's a shame that you weren't able to get your dream job. I do hope you like working as an architect. It may not be as glamorous(from the point of view of a young girl, I'm not saying that is how it is in real life) as the music industry, but you still get to create works for other people to enjoy. My dad is an architect, and I think it's really cool when a building he helped design gets put up.
I watched the HSM movies for the first time later in life because I was never interested when they were first coming out. They’re goofy little romps that are actually highly enjoyable. For what it is, it’s a surprisingly solid trilogy.
I'm in the same boat, I'm not into the whole musical thing but to me these movies represent a simpler time where life was just about friendship and where your biggest worry was whether your marks on a test would be good enough or something. All the lenses I watch other movies through, plot inconsistencies and all kinds of criticism I usually have just go out of the window with this movie because it doesn't matter, if anything the fact hsm doesn't pay attention to those details reinforces the feeling of a simpler time
Actually they were originally supposed to called the sharpies, but prior to his tragic death on Isla Nublar, Dennis Nedry (being close friends with one of the higher ups at Newell Brands) had concerns that it may have caused a lawsuit if they went through with it and the producers got scared
@@displayname9538 Sorry to ruin your precious Jarvis Lore, but I can't help but think of this line from a 2018 game I've yet to play about a famous blue legend with a case of babyface. "But... We can't just let him get away!"
The thing that drives me crazy is that they made a character named Fulton when the main character's last name is Bolton. That messed with my dumb little brain. I thought I was just hearing things wrong
no bc i remember bawling my eyes out at the part "what about us, what about everything we've been through" & then the whole "WAHAT ABOUT TRUST" .. really hit me in the heart.
i VIVIDLY remember listening to this song on my mp3 player in my room, staring in the mirror, singing gabriella’s part, and just sobbing my way through the number
fun fact: they had to add ALL the sports to this romantic movie musical so that the second half of the primary demographic, highschool aged BOYS, would watch it
One of my favorite comments made about HS musical 2 and 3 is that the biggest plot inconsistency is that Troy is scraping and stressing for scholarships, meanwhile his family is clearly LOADED. He's basically sitting in a mansion wondering, "how in earth will I afford my education??"
i know people with rich parents whose parents are stingy and expect them to figure out how to pay for college themselves while also expecting the kid to go to college and not opt out of it
i feel like an even bigger inconsistency is that his dad coaches a high school basketball team and they can afford a mansion? i guess it’s possible though that his unmentioned mom is a bank executive who can afford to support her husband’s basketball coaching career
I can never unsee the sheer number of outtakes they had for the "skin tone compatible" lines from Sharpay that are in the credits. It makes that scene infinitely better to watch.
13:04 "Look at him. Indisputably dancing. We'll come back to this." I feel like I'm in court, but that is the funniest thing I've ever heard. He IS indisputably dancing.
Replace the father with a sentient basketball, and the whole story is about a human trying to live up to the expectations of his basketball father, and the difficulties of relating to a basketball as a human teenager.
oh my god, i was obsessed with how ridiculous "bet on it" was. i would rewatch this specific 5-second clip of zac efron thrashing around on the golf course OVER and OVER on my mom's computer and lose my goddamn mind
I like how Troy is the shittiest dude ever but he's the good guy. He literally gets everything handed to him in exchange for a talent show performance and throws a hissy fit.
if the drama hinged more on he didn't want things handed to him and he felt guilty for singing with sharpay (as opposed to gabriella being jealous) it wouldve made a lot more sense that way. like gabriella dgaf because she has ryan, troy feels stressed about them drifting, and gives up what is being handed to him because of this instead of just... hissy fit...
I mean sure he wasn't great to his friends but he has a whole conversation with Gabriella about how his parents are saving everything so he can go to college which is why he needs a scholarship and Gabriella and the rest of the team are mad at him for not skipping work to fuvk around with them all day
22:51 Troy: Hey! (Translation: What do you think you're doing dancing with him?) Gabriella: Hey! (Translation: Well, maybe pay attention to me and I won't dance with other men.) Ryan: Hey! (No translation is needed. Ryan is experiencing what we call "gay oblivion," in which one cannot fathom the possibility that your straight friends interpret your behavior as heterosexual flirting. His "Hey!" is unburdened by insinuation.)
It's great to see the love for Ryan and Chad. As of late I've again been OBSESSED with these two, even so much more than I ever was before. Years ago I already liked these two characters together, but now I've taken it to a whole new level. Like, the "I went and actually wrote a fanfic about them" level. Just a couple days back I spent most of the day either just listening to the song in the background while I did other things, or just repeatedly watching the movie clip and analyzing the hell out of it for my own amusement. Chad and Ryan? They deserve all the love and appreciation they can get. And I'll forever be shoveling it all over them.
In case anyone was dying to know, "She stepped on the ball" is a reference to a scene in Auntie Mame. It's intentionally unfunny, and they're talking about ping pong.
Wow, it's a reference?? I always thought Daddy Evans was just telling an anecdote about his wife or something. In fact I feel like I remember another scene where he's telling the same story, and we hear the same line, and as everyone is laughing Mrs. Evans goes "I did not!!"
@@elsie8757 Yeah in the original a very insufferable rich girl is telling a long boring story about ping pong, and you're dying for some kind of punchline just to make it worth your time. The anti-climax makes it hilarious. The message in HSM is basically just "this guy sucks"
Auntie Mame created a short hand for pretentious rich people with that line. That's why it also shows up in Trading Places and this movie. If someone creates douchey rich characters in their story, there's a decent chance they'll say that line.
When I was a kid my best friends mom was a janitor at the highschool. If she needed to be there after hours for whatever reason she would sometimes let us in too and we were obsessed. Despite having just been there like 3 or 4 hours ago.
We can make fun of Kelsey's abilities all we want but there's a person exactly like her barely making every high school production function by pure miracle

I laughed so loud when Jarvis said "Dude I want somebody looked at me the way Chad looks at Ryan" that I scared my cat off the bed. Something about the cut to Ryan broke me
Jarvis, small detail that clearly enhances this already flawless masterpiece - the fake fall into the pool is actually *more* dangerous, as falling into a shallow pool increases your chance of hitting your head/neck on the bottom.
I gave my boyfriend a shirt with a painting of me on it. It's actually merch I sell for my music, but still, think that may be a contender for "most narcissistic gift of all time"
I was in college when these movies came out so they weren’t on my radar other than “those things my nieces are obsessed with.” But years later when my kid was about 5 they were still playing them like crazy on Disney Channel (especially around the time Teen Beach movie came out, I think). Suddenly my kid was hooked. He recorded them all on the DVR, watched them on repeat, and memorized the dances. I still know most of the songs from the first two movies because he watched it so often. I might have nightmares tonight about washing dishes to “we’re all in this together” on repeat.
i had a literal PREMIERE party for this movie. my mom bought a people magazine with a preview and we got red fabric from michaels and made a red carpet out of my walkway and poured blue gatorade into plastic margarita glasses so it looked like the drinks sharpay has by the pool and all of my friends came over in red and white outfits to wat h it hahaha
There was a hill in my hometown that looked exactly like This Hill, and people loved to go there and sing High School Musical songs. This concludes all the things I remember about cinematic masterpiece High School Musical 2.
The great thing about the T gift, is if things don’t work out with Troy she can just find another guy with a name that starts with T. She could even tell him she bought it herself.
i bought myself a necklace with the letter J on it but everyone thinks it’s from my bf because his name starts with J too. i don’t really correct people bc i think it’s funny
My boyfriends name starts with a T, and his mom got me a cute necklace with a T on it and she said if we ever break up it can just be a cross☠️what is she tryna say
@@bethanylamastus15 I once worked with a girl that flirted with me quite a bit and even asked me out once. For a long time I wasn’t sure what she saw in me. Then I remembered her ex was called Johnny and my name is John. So maybe she had a bunch of stuff with his name on it, and was looking for someone with a similar name so that she could still use it.
Idk why but i think you pointing out that moment when Ryan says he does yoga and the dad *straightens* his hat is my favorite moment in UA-cam history. I’ve watched a weird amount of videos about HSM2 and no one has ever brought this up. The attention to detail is just **mwah** quality content
The “and she stepped on the ball” could be a reference to the movie (and later, musical) Auntie Mame where the stuffy rich people try to tell a story about something “horrible” that happened to them, but it was just a dumb ping pong game and someone dropped and later, stepped on the ping pong ball. Doubt anyone was thinking of that, but that’s what I think of, lmao.
My favourite thing to pitch fake essays about is how HSM2 and The Devil Wears Prada have the same "ambition vs friends" plot. I love this movie and your summary of it is making me laugh so hard.
I'm glad there's still people out there passionate about HSM cuz god knows how obsessed with it I was when it came out. HSM 2 is definitely the best one, it has the best songs by far. Also how the fuck does Kurtis come up with that stuff it's honestly so impressive and hilarious. Also I love the new merch but for some reason every time I look at it I just see Winnie the Pooh lmao
20:30 - In Sharpay's defense, I think she meant "skin-tone compatible" in terms of the undertones because they're both cool toned and so both look good in coral blue. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
It's non-diegetic. The characters aren't actually dancing in world. Do people not know how musicals work? Do people think that the characters in Hamilton are singing and dancing in the story itself?
@@aarishowton8037 It's not really a question of suspension of disbelief. It's just how the genre works. You speak until the emotions are so high that you have to sing and then when emotions get even higher you dance. The musical number expresses the baseball game and argument between the characters. Like in Westside Story how the Sharks and Jets get into a dance off but it's actually a fight in the story. Diegetically, no dancing is happening.
the coulours in this movie are everything tbh. also the backgroud acting levels are on point. also also, my biggest dream is that since in hsmtmts season 3 they're bringing in corbin bleu, i want him to somehow address the fact that ryan and chad were in love at some point in life. like bring the headcanon that they met back later in college or after, and they fell in love, with chad crediting ryan for realizing he was bi, please and thank you
I don't think anyone can argue about this being the best High School Musical movie, not only is it the best...it has the best soundtrack out of all the movies.
man, i feel like we rarely get to appreciate how adorable young boys can be. like little jarvis being so hyped up about high school musical and learning the dances? that shit is so wholesome and cute 😭
BREAKING: Writers of across the spider verse have thrown out all copies of the script saying, "we remembered high school musical 2 existed and we just couldn't top it"
When I saw this it brought tears to eyes as avid and staunch HSM 2 supremacist. I have spent years insisting that this is by far the best HSM movie and I never allowed myself to stray or listen to the non-believers.
I said 'Ryan's the best' at the same time as you did, I love that boy and when I watched this movie with my sister recently (she's 10 years younger so she missed the craze by dint of being 2 years old), we both screamed when Sharpay gave the trophy to him, he deserves everything!! I Don't Dance is the best song ever. I hope Ryan and Chad are happy and in love to this day lmao.
I can't believe you missed arguably one of the most iconic examples of Disney hating moms!! Bambi, anyone? Hated moms so much that they killed her off. Actually, I guess there are lots of moms that die, necessarily opening the door for the evil stepmoms...
I think Bambi is simply one of the rare occasions we see and know the mom is present at the beginning, while oftentimes other Disney moms just barely or never existed since the beginning of the story being told.

It may not be as glamorous(from the point of view of a young girl, I'm not saying that is how it is in real life) as the music industry, but you still get to create works for other people to enjoy. My dad is an architect, and I think it's really cool when a building he helped design gets put up.
I’m glad you’re happy now but that story still hurts 💔
@@creatvlioness3348 the music industry is not glamorous, specially for women
@M. V. Gonzalez i think maybe it looks glamorous from the outside, obv not what really goes on
Oh noooo 😭. To think the movie discouraged u first before even your parents could 😭😭
I watched the HSM movies for the first time later in life because I was never interested when they were first coming out.

That is such a missed opportunity to name them The Sharpies, and frankly, I'm disappointed.

One of my favorite comments made about HS musical 2 and 3 is that the biggest plot inconsistency is that Troy is scraping and stressing for scholarships, meanwhile his family is clearly LOADED. He's basically sitting in a mansion wondering, "how in earth will I afford my education??"
this feels like a metacommentary on the cost of higher education in America lol
if rich white people cant afford it then who can
@@disappointedmess209 i have a feeling thats not what they were trying to say but that wouldve been crazy lol
i know people with rich parents whose parents are stingy and expect them to figure out how to pay for college themselves while also expecting the kid to go to college and not opt out of it
i feel like an even bigger inconsistency is that his dad coaches a high school basketball team and they can afford a mansion? i guess it’s possible though that his unmentioned mom is a bank executive who can afford to support her husband’s basketball coaching career
the Kurtis "stepson thoball" joke is literally one of the funniest things ever. the setup is so perfect

Oh my god, I thought the name of the song was "bed on it" 😅
I like how Troy is the shittiest dude ever but he's the good guy.
I mean like he's white so and rich so he always gets everything he wants.
I mean sure he wasn't great to his friends but he has a whole conversation with Gabriella about how his parents are saving everything so he can go to college which is why he needs a scholarship and Gabriella and the rest of the team are mad at him for not skipping work to fuvk around with them all day

Man who doesn't? That's peak romance right there.
And I'll forever be shoveling it all over them.
chad and ryan are 100% in love and I'm living for it
In case anyone was dying to know, "She stepped on the ball" is a reference to a scene in Auntie Mame.
I always immediately think of the Trading Places callback, which is another cultural anchor for this line. Thanks for this!

As a teacher, the phenomenon of students deciding they suddenly don’t want to leave because now they’re not supposed to be there is REAL
When I was a kid my best friends mom was a janitor at the highschool. If she needed to be there after hours for whatever reason she would sometimes let us in too and we were obsessed. Despite having just been there like 3 or 4 hours ago.
Its all that teenage rebellion in us that wants to try all the taboos.
If even during school hours, school was just a place we got to hang out with our friends without any work, i would totally not want to leave then too

This was literally the most 🏳️🌈 movie in the entire trilogy.

I was in college when these movies came out so they weren’t on my radar other than “those things my nieces are obsessed with.”
But years later when my kid was about 5 they were still playing them like crazy on Disney Channel (especially around the time Teen Beach movie came out, I think).
That sounds like an absolute blast. I wasn't old enough when this movie came out to casually have parties at my house, so I envy this hardcore lol.

Like in Westside Story how the Sharks and Jets get into a dance off but it's actually a fight in the story. Diegetically, no dancing is happening.
