  • In this video, I replace my roller on my roll n lock bed cover. My truck is an 06 GMC, but it should be the same steps for all roll n locks. There is another video showing it working properly. Enjoy, and feel free to like, and share!

    I found your video useful for future references. I have an 03 Ram with a 6ft 4in bed. I got my Roll n Lock in 04. It appears that your cover is the same Roll n Lock I have. It's old and it took a beating from off road activities, mud, dirt, weather, and everyday usage. But it's still fully functional and keeps the bed dry. (Except at the automatic car wash) I'm shocked that it still works.
    I'm getting another truck, and roll the dice on the electrical Roll n Lock.

    Hoping to fix mine. It came on the truck and has seen better days. I don't care to drop much $ into it.. when my lock linkage and such started not working giving ng me trouble, I contacted them seeking parts list and exploded views, and I guess they just wanted to sell me a new entire cover system..and nope..I do love my cover..but replacement parts and videos would be great

      Hopefully you can get it fixed. The roller was 125.00 to my door.

    Hey Anthony. I so appreciate people like yourself to put up videos like these. I'm in the middle of repairing mine, a 2006 GMC Sierra 8' bed. I bought it the day I bought my truck new in November of 2007. The case is all rivited in. How did you get your roller bar out. We can do a follow up video, maybe I'll do my first one 😉 when I get this done and explain so I don't write such a long comment. I'm getting ready to completely disassemble mine if I have to because I love it but don't want to pay $300 to fix it or $1400 for a new one either. Thanks buddy!!

      Jmb8155, when you open the cover, you have to drill out the rivets that are holding the cover to the roller. Then take the Allen screw out of the passenger side, and just lift the roller out. It's just set into a notch on the driver's side. Put the new roller in and make sure the cover is square with it, and drill new holes and re rivet it, then take two 11/16 open end wrenches, and re tension the spring to manufacture specs, then reinstall the Allen set screw and take the wrenches out. Hope this clarifies anything I forgot in the video, and thanks for watching!

      Thanks for getting back to me so quickly Tim! Your info is definitely helpful although my cover is slightly different. Mine shaft sits in a square u channel piece and is held in place by a cotter pin. I had the cover rolled up because my spring is still good and I wanted to have the least tension on it as possible. I could be wrong because like you mentioned when you put up your video (thanks again) there aren't any others like it, I had to take off that passenger side plate that holds the shaft because I couldn't get to the cotter pin. Anyway. Looking for parts and I'll follow up

    Great video sir... so to adjust the tension so it will roll open easier I take the cover off and keep the bed cover latched to the tailgate and then adjust that screw with the 11/16 wrenches? Thank you

      Be careful not to overtighten it. But it's really straightforward. Thanks for watching

    My tensioner broke after 3 years, wasn't covered under warranty, over $300 to get it fixed at the shop. I wouldn't buy another one for $1400.

      You can order the roller from the factory for about 130 delivered to your door. It comes with new rivets, and fix it yourself. That's what I did. Also, you have to take the lid off the front and clean it out from time to time, and keep the tracks clean with 303 aerospace protectant. They're a good bit of maintenance, but I love mine. Good luck!

    Thanks for the video - seriously, I don’t understand why a vendor wouldn’t post “how-to” videos for all to watch. But I also agree with the comment that the actual “tensioning”would have been nice to watch. Mine just keeps spinning, and I believe it’s because it’s broken… how many revolutions did you have to make before you felt the tension in the new one?

    • @timdean7472
      @timdean7472  2 роки тому

      amazaf, thanks for watching, and I'm glad it helped. According to roll n lock, it usually takes about 15 full revolutions to tension it tight enough to roll in by itself. I had the 5.6 bed, so your bed may be more depending on the length. Again, thanks for watching!

    My 2005 Silverado has the RNL tonneau cover and the spring broke. I took apart the driveshaft sized aluminum housing and the spring had snapped in the middle area.I called the company and he asked if it was the 3" or 4" assembly. I told him it was the 4" and he said that the 4" it was discomtinued years ago. I am fairly mechanical and trying to figure out why it could not work with the newer 3"? Any help would be great, as I do not want to pay for a pricy, new RNL!

      The only reason I could think the three inch wouldn’t work would is if it would throw the angle that it goes into the box off, which may cause it to catch when you try to pull it out.Good luck, and thanks for watching!!

      @@timdean7472 I called RNL and they seemed to just want to sell me a new cover for $2K. Since mine is the older 4" he said the 3" won't work. I am not sure if I buy that. If the length is the same, I dont see why it could not work. Not really rocket science, maybe a mod to get it usuable? If you get a chance, could you measure your reel with the top cover off? Thanks for any help!! Jeff

      William Cheney, sorry it has taken so long to reply to your message. I haven't been able to figure out how to link anything in the description of my videos. So let me give you the phone number for Roll n lock that's who I ordered mine from was straight from the factory that number is 1 - 800 - 952 - 7655. I ordered mine from the factory took me about two weeks to get it and it cost me right at about $130 to my door. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

      I got the new roller straight from roll n lock. You'll need your model number, which is under the debris cover on the driver's side. The number is (954) 785- 7655. Thanks for watching, and I'm glad it helped!

    Great vid I’ve just ordered a new one for mine . What did you do to tension it in the end?

    • @timdean7472
      @timdean7472  5 років тому +1

      You have to take two 11/16 openend wrenches, and alternate tightening it. Mine was 14 full revolutions for a 5.5 foot bed. Put the Allen head bolt back in when you get the tension on it, then take the wrench off.

      Chris The Bear, I had to call roll n lock directly, and give them my part number for the cover, along with all the info for my truck. The number for your cover should be on the driver's side, under the header cover.

    So....wait. I'm gonna do all of the things mentioned in your video.....to have a non working roll n'lock? Is there a second video? An alternate ending video that I'm missing? Tensioning the spring is the most important part it would seem like.....and then the video ended. Sorry, not helpful.

      Hi, and thanks for watching!! I actually do have a follow up video on why mine wouldn’t roll up that I posted about a month after this one. Sorry I didn’t see your comment until now. Mine was just bad placement of the brackets that hold the cover on the truck, so it was squeezing the cover
