Really like the videos ! This last one just motivated me to what I've got to do on my old xr 600 - havn't kick started it in 12 years , and the engine is locked . Daily use is 99 CB599 , really smooth shifting , quick when needed / some times H.D. Sportster , but most fun and true biking is always the dirt bike . Damn missing it to ! Going to start working on it right now thanks to this guy . 💪
You make it all look too easy! Love your work! Got the same WR426, it used to idle like a 90 YO smoker and it now barely starts. I'll strip the whole engine off, starting with the carburetor and hopefully I'll find my problem. Good luck!
Well done for last year, you got the bike going and thats bloody brilliant :-)). I think your logic and methods are fine, it works, it has good compression and you can allways fiddle about with the settings to get optimum. Too many negative people in the world, ignore them!!
Been watching this fella for a couple of days now and here are my findings... if you gave the man a retired NASA rocket ship that no longer ran, in two weeks it would be on the moon. Just saying.... keep on keepin on brother.
10:00 stop, make sure the last intake lobe is facing up :) judging by the video you did not look.. Btw these arnt old cars i know your trying to save money but for a bike you just bought with unknown hours i would take the head off and inspect valve wear and the piston and bore etc.. (may work out better in the long run) Love these videos and have watched all of the wr series id like to make videos like this
for the future, you should look into getting vermont registration for bikes with no title, its a well documented, proven loophole, which is a fairly easy process to getting a title and registration, many forums cover the process which is basically the same as applying for a new title. easy.
To check your valve clearance, your engine has to be at top dead center, and there is a specific amount of clearance that is suppose to be between the cam and the cam bucket
Really great video. I like how you explain everything in detail, but still it's not too much talking - not enough action. Looking forward to seeing videos of this bike tearing up dirt!
wow ! great videos man i realy enjoy watchin them ! its cool how you had the guts to take her all apart and find out what the issues were , good for you Braap
You need to be at top dead center there should be 2 plastic screws on the side of one of your side covers where you put it at top dead center, the bottom one has a bolt for a socket, and the top one shows your flywheel and your stator, there is 1 mark on the flywheel and 1 mark on the stator, align those up and your at top dead center, never mess with valve adjustments or try and get your cams in time without making sure your piston is at top dead center!!!!!! Very very very important!!!!
Awesome video! Very informative. And good camera angles so we can actually SEE what you're doing and talking about, which is not something we often get in engine work UA-cam videos.
Guy your a dream come true for us home boys. Country boy from ontario here. Amd you friend have turned me into a half ass mechanic. I want to pay you! And i will soon when my paypal is back inline
This is bucket and shim not rocker arm. That's why. Bucket and shim suffer from less float, harmonics etc.. I know these comments are over a year old on a 6 year old video...
Why are you reinventing the wheel? You're not even at TDC, when you are the cam lobes should both face out with the cam marks level with the head. Free .PDF manuals are all over the place. Go get one.
no thats a decompression lever, the odler yz 4 strokes had a decompression lever. around 03 and newer they switched to auto decompression and a hot start
I know this is 7 years ago, but I have a 2002 yamaha yz426f that I tried bump starting it after I couldn’t get it to start even after I did the whole procedure. And now I have really low compression to the point where I can move my kick start all the way with my hand. I used the decompression lever while I dumped the clutch and I thing I might’ve holded it too long. Now the decompression lever won’t engage, the handle is really stiff.
I am a novice 16 year old mechanic, I can rebuild top ends in smokers by myself, and I'm trying to learn some stuff so...: could it have that low of compression because of a stuck open valve?
FrassonRacing yea dude your right but stuck open valve isnt really the right terminology, there's supposed to be a small space between the lobes and buckets, as the space becomes thinner and thinner the cam without the lobe facing down pushing the bucket open will open the the valve ever so slightly causing the compression to escape through the little space between the valve and the head
This might explain the problem with my 02' WR426f. I put new piston rings and head gaskets along with a timing chain, because when I started it one day it blew out black and bluish smoke so I shut it down and never started again. After I rebuilt it she still has no comp. Going to resleeve the cylinder and put a new piston in it but if that's the case then I wasted my money lmao
love the vids. i got an '02 yz426 project that could be the identical twin of yours. valve lash, dirty carb, oil leak in clutch cover, and mixing oil. anyways, quick question. (rebuilt the carb and replaced accelerator pump so far) waiting on parts right now so i been shining the junk out of it. keep us posted on yours, maybe i can get a vid up of mine as well. peace.
I have a yz426f 2001 Im trying to rebuild after it was stole from me dont knkw if its even worth it they had it 6 mths without changing the oil or nothing for that matter. So one thing Im confused about is the header pipe gos right into the engine theres no coupler that comes out. Not sure of the name of the part but I see it on all these bikes and mine dont have one. Never worked on 4 stroke bikes so just learning. Thats for putting out these videos they help alot. Just dont know if I should sell as is or sink more money? I have a 2018 rmz450 just wanted to do work on that before my 2018 needs work.
sounds like the bikes running lean which is bad for the motor i could tell when you hit the throttle it returns to idle slower than it should..... this is also called a lean drop and isnt detrimental but should be adressed in the future
That might just be because it's so small. I can start my 120cc 2-stroke with my hand and it has very good compression. I was even able to hand-kickstart my 400 triple 2-stroke because the kickstarter is very good.
the 1.55's and the 1.65 are intake the 1.85's are ext. could be the two .55 are wearing because of the middle being to high causing a see/saw effect wearing the two outside more ??? lol Jake don't get me lying on this one brh don't have my hands on it ... oh crap just looked at the date of the video ???
great upload, detailed, informative, educational and witty.(well half way there in the right direction for the wit dept;.....most of all enjoyable and interesting,,
My bad I misspoke there’s a hashmark on the side cover and you align that up with your flywheel 😂😂😂, recheck your valves while your motorcycle is at top dead center lol
At the part 22:41 why didnt you just take the 1.85mm shim from the bad intake and trade with the right side exhaust shim? looks like it wouldve work perfectly.
My 99 yz400f, valve cover gasket is leaking and one side is tighter than.the other and so it leaks out the side thats loose and not the tight side any ideas what could cause that please
no he did not which is why he had all that clearance...smh. And to think allllll these people think this guy is GOD is beyond me. He's good. But he aint that good.
Nextime if you work on the engine, Take it out of the frame.. CLEAN IT ( Breakcleaner ) And work with clean hands ;) If you dont have much money to spend this is the best way to SAFE money
I could watch these videos all day
same man i could binge what this all day long instead of homework
Simply amazing this guy. Just smart, really smart. So much to learn from this video people
Really like the videos ! This last one just motivated me to what I've got to do on my old xr 600 - havn't kick started it in 12 years , and the engine is locked . How did it go
I'm glad you enjoyed the videos, thanks!
You make it all look too easy! Love your work! Got the same WR426, it used to idle like a 90 YO smoker and it now barely starts. I'll strip the whole engine off, starting with the carburetor and hopefully I'll find my problem.

Happy to hear you enjoyed it, thanks!
I watched this video two times it taught me a lot and got my bike going thanks man! Great video
I am convinced that if he started a cooking show and you gave him some salt and a cup of flour... the end result would be a 16 ounce t bone steak.
Great video! tip: when loosening your cam caps do it in a criss cross pattern in stages like you would to torque them down.
Well done for last year, you got the bike going and thats bloody brilliant :-)).
I think your logic and methods are fine, it works, it has good compression and you can allways fiddle about with the settings to get optimum.
Too many negative people in the world, ignore them!!
Runs good. Great explanation of valve adjustment. I've never seen that done before. Good luck.
Been watching this fella for a couple of days now and here are my findings... if you gave the man a retired NASA rocket ship that no longer ran, in two weeks it would be on the moon. Just saying.... keep on keepin on brother.
The 426's had such a beautiful unique sound to them😍
FrassonRacing sounds like a beast
I respectfully understood your purpose and reason for getting those bikes I bought one myself for 700 I’m rebuilding the top in now
10:00 stop, make sure the last intake lobe is facing up :) judging by the video you did not look..
Btw these arnt old cars i know your trying to save money but for a bike you just bought with unknown hours i would take the head off and inspect valve wear and the piston and bore etc.. (may work out better in the long run)
Love these videos and have watched all of the wr series id like to make videos like this
Just by seeing you open the cover i could tell the cam's are off sync at TDC the cam circle's on the back side should be facing opposite side equally
Benjamin Engle not always
I could tell it was out of time when he took cover off
for the future, you should look into getting vermont registration for bikes with no title, its a well documented, proven loophole, which is a fairly easy process to getting a title and registration, many forums cover the process which is basically the same as applying for a new title. easy.
Once again you need a rag underneath so it catches parts in case they drop. I really enjoy your videos though, keep them coming.
Awesome man! I can work on bikes but I have a lot more to learn. Love the videos, keep up the amazing content, thanks for teaching me everything!

Thankyou so much for this video, i have had the exact same problem with an 84 xr500 but now i am confident i can fix it.
The tensioner will lock if you turn it all the way in- makes installation easier
I know this video is old but for anyone reading this, make sure your engine is a top dead center before checking valve clearance.
Love watching these videos, thanks for the awesome rebuild vids!!
wow ! great videos man i realy enjoy watchin them ! its cool how you had the guts to take her all apart and find out what the issues were , good for you Braap
i like the way you work on the bike. you use plain logic, your sence and reason. though i would have used a torque wrench for the cam caps.
Should've put the engine out of the bike with no title into the bike with the title
You could but on the title there is a vin number that matches to the frame and to the engine. It would work but it would be sketchy when you sell it.
Same engine dumbass
You have both a frame- and an engine number - all specific to one bike.
@@itsyehboii1758 two different bikes tho
@@henripuustinen4642 use the good engine for parts

Great video I love to see something not running turn into something that runs
The bike needs to be at tdc (top dead center) and keep the cam covers tight get the right shims and adjust them.
He did
maybe you should finish the video
This guy points to a lot of invisible links in his videos. LOLOL!!! 😜😜😜😂😂😂 ... Just messing with ya though man. Love your videos. 😊😊😊
Oh my god thank you! I just got a 01 426f and had the same problem! I have the carb apart right now and after that doing this! Thank you so much!
Guy your a dream come true for us home boys. Country boy from ontario here. Amd you friend have turned me into a half ass mechanic. I want to pay you! And i will soon when my paypal is back inline
+Brandon Quenneville haha thanks! No need to pay me, I'm just glad you like the videos.
I believe the hot cam shims are for auto decompression sir, just saying might be why it did not lock up at top dead center.
id forgotten how ridiculously loud these old bikes were, i had a 99 yz400f back in the day that sounded pretty much the same
Hey no matter what anybody says I like your videos keeping coming bro
ik this is old but u cant chech the clearances unless ut TDC or u wont get an acurate reading
Interesting, I'll look into that. Thanks!
man i really wish you did some projects like these with a naked 600cc or super sports bike!
I don't understand why these newer bikes have valves that need shims. Why not use an adjustable valve with a locknut like on older Suzuki DRs?
more moving parts and more weight higher up on the bike, not a big deal for a trail bike, but every ounce counts on a race bike
This is bucket and shim not rocker arm. That's why. Bucket and shim suffer from less float, harmonics etc.. I know these comments are over a year old on a 6 year old video...
Makes sense to me! Thanks
are you still doing videos as of 10-13-2018
You have to put the engine in time to check the Valve gap
Why are you reinventing the wheel? You're not even at TDC, when you are the cam lobes should both face out with the cam marks level with the head. Free .PDF manuals are all over the place. Go get one.
no thats a decompression lever, the odler yz 4 strokes had a decompression lever. around 03 and newer they switched to auto decompression and a hot start
you're a beast dude... great videos . keep em coming
Thanks I needed this I got the same bike with the same issue and I think this video is going to help me a lot
Hope the project goes well

Moto . Kid sounds like a timing problem, that's why I love 2 strokes 😂
i cant believe it took so long for me to find your channel
after you fix it. do the cam mod. bike will become a beast. its when it move the cam chain back one tooth
love the vids. i got an '02 yz426 project that could be the identical twin of yours. valve lash, dirty carb, oil leak in clutch cover, and mixing oil. anyways, quick question. Sounds to me that you have another dirt bike that will run and give you years of fun and maybe even make you some money some day.
I had a bike the same easy to work on, mine did 400 hours on same piston and still was going hard
I have a yz426f 2001 Im trying to rebuild after it was stole from me dont knkw if its even worth it they had it 6 mths without changing the oil or nothing for that matter. My bad I misspoke there’s a hashmark on the side cover and you align that up with your flywheel 😂😂😂, recheck your valves while your motorcycle is at top dead center lol
It looks like the cam was off a couple of chain links, from the other videos ive seen they line up differently
You should switch the engine from the 01 into this bike and you can register it like that.
"good enough... for this old boy."
Good job on improvisation man! you are like me, we spend less money than Tarzan.
haha you got that right, and I think he dresses better than me too!
If a bike is sitting for a long time and it has low compression if you rid it around for a while it will get more and more compression
Smart Man! Jennie's got a Winner!
poor bike....some ding dong didnt shim the valves right...? luckily you found this and hopefully will save a nice bike
Just got a kx250 last Monday with the same compression problem I'm hoping this is all it is
its 2001 the engine has been took apart before so you never know and that lever is a hot start lever not a decompression lever
haha nice job with the bike mate slowly but surely getting there
At the part 22:41 why didnt you just take the 1.85mm shim from the bad intake and trade with the right side exhaust shim? looks like it wouldve work perfectly.
Dud can do a video with sound of the engine .I got one 2000 model and i put new piston ring and chain and make a little noise ...
Check the final video, lots of good engine sounds there :)
Just use a magnet to get your buckets and shims out. Then you dont have to use pliers.
i need one. im having so much trouble with my bike at the moment
Sounds sick as man! Good luck with it!
I'm not that smart, I just like working on stuff!
No genius ever thinks they’re smart.. I like the way you approach things Bud.. SUBSCRIBED!
shoulda put a timing chain on it. would start one kick then. timing gets off as t stretches.
my motto in life: "bad idea? maybe, but that's ok" :D
Your timing is out lobes at 10 and 2 at tdc
great series thank you for making these
Buenas, se le puede adaptar el cilindro de la 450 a la Yz 426f?
My 99 yz400f, valve cover gasket is leaking and one side is tighter than.the other and so it leaks out the side thats loose and not the tight side any ideas what could cause that please
Hola mi moto es una yamaha wr 426f, la moto en caliente tiene compresión pero en frío no tiene compresión, a que puede ser devido?
what kind of exhaust is on that i might be picking a yfz426 for 1000 and like how that exhaust sounds
Great videos man keep it up!!
Hot cams shim kit on eBay, buy sizes you need or kit. Cheap stuff
One things for sure: Way too complicated for a dirt-bike. Let's go with the Honda 50, 70, 90, 100, 110, 125, etc. Just for fun. Lol :-)
did you have it on tdc when checking the clearance?
no he did not which is why he had all that clearance...smh. And to think allllll these people think this guy is GOD is beyond me. He's good. But he aint that good.
Nextime if you work on the engine, Take it out of the frame.. CLEAN IT ( Breakcleaner )
And work with clean hands ;) If you dont have much money to spend this is the best way to SAFE money
How do you find bikes like this i love fixing them and want to do a project like this.
+C G craigslist every day, there's deals out there.
i have a 2002 yz450 ,i have a question my fly wheel does not have a mark for the tdc,its just round and smooth,,,help
U have It fixed yet? If not respond and I can try to help u
Love your videos my friend fantastic
Thanks so much!
have ever work on a 4-wheeler motorbike before
Very Very nice find. very lucky.
+TheGamerGuy Yeah, it was a good machine.
WOW!!! $600... golly. What did you do with the other one?
The neighbor kid had a suzuki rm400 that blew up, so I sold the kx cheap to him.
exhaust cam looked like it was a tooth off.
