That stabilizer I agree is a must. I have a headlight on the front added to mine and the front end definitely gets a bit wild at top speed. I just hold on tight and hope for no death wobble 🙃
No joke…you could try raising your fork height a bit, you’ll lose a little handling in corners but your front end won’t walk on ya 🤷🏼♂️ unfortunately it’s a balance between handling and stability…personally I steer with my throttle so I jack them bitches up 👍
Yeah I got them as raked out as they can be 🙃 I definitely feel it in the tight turns, but like you said the throttle is what makes the bike turn around quick. As you know the 426 spends most of its time going fast so I don’t mind losing some stability on the turns if itll keep things “safe” wide open lol 👍
Picked up a 2001 a couple weeks. Awesome power to ground ! At 55 yrs old, this is a blast !! Several mods from prior owner, and adding more now. GREAT BIKE !!
I've owned 7 of these bikes. By far one of my favorite bikes, but the best mod would be a auto decompression cam from a 2003 yz450f or a Hotcam. Also a 450f carb.
I have an 02 426 WR with the hotcam exhaust cam mod that eliminates the manual decomp. I’ve got the carb throttle stop corrected, did the exhaust cam yz timing mod, yz ignition timing wire change and love the power. It’s strong smooth power. Love the 18” rear rim coupled up with an IRC M5B 140/80/18, makes a killer rear tire.
The two best mods we did to all of our 426s(2) & 400s(3) are 05 yz450f carb & hot cams decomp set up, bikes crank so easy I can kick them over with no problem, great bikes !
Awesome bike just got me a 2001 yz426 street legal but needs major love. need to rebuild bottom and top end. Pretty much replacing everything. I’ll post videos soon.
Fuck yeah! Throw some good parts at her and let it rip ! I recommend the 13.5:1 piston ...both hot cams and a good head polish ...that thing will be a rocket 🚀...look forward to seeing your videos and thanks for the sub...If you run into any issues feel free to drop questions in my comments section. I’ll answer as soon as I can 👍
Hello I have put comments and questions on one of the first videos when the bike was first bought with some good feedback and helpful hints but now I have another BIG PROBLEM! I got all my parts in and ready to be installed in my motor I got new valves and springs from kibblewhite! I got both exhaust and intake hotcams camshafts I got new connecting rod and piston kit, performance ignition coil, a complete transmission bearing and seal kit, 2 complete engine gasket kits just incase, counter balancer bearings and shaft, water pump rebuild kit and shaft, timing chain, tensioners, on and on I have over a 1000$ invested!!!! I have everything to make this old bike new again! Now I start to tear down the motor pulling the valve cover and then the cams and what do I find the journals on the intake side where the camshaft rides in is badly worn I can clearly see mushrooming and that's not good!!! I obviously can't put all my new parts in with it being like that!!! So what do I do! I looked around online i found a refurbished YZ426F head for 750$ but its complete with new everything including stock cams! I just spent all that money I may just buy this head so I have it but I want my head redone as well! WHO CAN I SEND IT TO FOR THE MACHINE WORK TO BE DONE????? i found several other heads online used and they want BIG$$$$ for them and basically they could be junk then I'm more screwed! I no I saw a few with the same problem and the seller says there in good shape some of the pictures I see don't even show the journals I think they are hiding something! And the ones I do see the journals they look as if they too are wore out! It's all a crap shoot! So if anyone can point me to a solution I'd be much appreciative! Because I am freaking out over this!!!!!🤢🤮😤🤬 This bike may end up being a big money pit with no happy ending!
Allen Stayduhar ok i understand your frustration. When it comes to machine work I always go local. But machine work isn’t necessary...sometimes with the older bikes it’s cheaper to buy a parts bike to go with with it 🤷🏼♂️. I say keep looking...I’m sure you’ll find a head that works ...FYI I ALWAYS do my own porting and head work hence my disclaimer “if you do t like working on shit don’t buy this bike” ....keep looking for a used head and buy a dremel 👍
@@localenterprisebroadcastin5971 I think that finding a parts bike is a wise idea I have been hoping to find a WR rather than a YZ so I can get the lighting coils and flywheel off the bike and use it on mine! I will definitely check out that video with porting I've always wondered how that works I've done 2 strokes but this is my first rebuild of a 4 stroke motor!!! Its all a new learning experience for me! Out of all the videos I've seen yours has been very helpful! Thanks again I'll definitely keep you updated!
Hey bud it's been awhile since I've messed with my 400 project! So I took the bike apart I have everything I need except for the head problem but I got a good used head now and I got it all rebuilt! All new internationals valves springs cams I put both exhaust and intake hot cams in it awaiting my shim kit! The only problem I'm having now is my cylinder itself there is very little wear in the cylinder although I can feel a slight difference when I put the old piston back in the bore. there seems to be a lot of play or a very large gape. I put the rings back on the piston and placed it back in seems to be very tight however it rocks side to side? So I dont know if I should have the cylinder chromed or my other option is a steel sleeve? The old piston is junk because the wrist pin is scored up slightly and there is a very little bit of play on both ends of my connecting rod which I put a new rod kit in it already! So question do I get a forged piston or a cast piston I know and understand that a cast piston can be weaker I also no that a cast piston doesn't expand as much as a forged piston does? Maybe this is why there seems to be a lot of room to allow for expansion to happen I also wanted to know and pick your brain if I go with a steel sleeve bore what kind of piston should I use? I'm fairly sure the rings are a different material then ones used in a chromed bore piston? And the reason I ask is I am looking into buying a cylinder that has been sleeved and bored to fit a 426 I imagine the heads are the same from a 400 to a 426 I was also curious about what compression ratio should I use? This is still all very new to me i never wrenched on a 4 stroke bike like this b4 there are so many variables to worry about! I do enjoy working in bikes though it's not a bother at all I just dont want to make any serious mistakes! I dont wanna do it twice and spend more money! If you can appreciate that! Once again I so greatly appreciate your help and input on my project! I hope I can send a video somehow when it's all done! Thanks a million! Ill be looking for your input!
I also was wondering where to buy one of those steering stabilizers you have on your bike? That is a definite upgrade I need to do! I've never felt a bike jolt side to side like that in the front like this one did on gravel at high speeds! Even older bikes I've had! I suppose its possible my steering stem is lose but I doubt it!

They're more reliable than the newer bikes, hey bro I got a 2001 426f I blew it up 4 times im currently rebuilding it but I wanna put this shit you got in it, and how you built it, can you lmk what shit to get and give me a few tips lmk
So I can stall my bike but just flicking the throttle from idle to 1/16th throttle just like 3mm of movement in the slide really fast and it will stall, if I gun it it will rev up fine, any way to get rid of that small small bog
Also you need to rule out any vacuum leaks before the carb...This could be done quite easily with a handheld propane torch, With the engine at idle point the propane torch around the intake of the engine (Obviously without the flame lit) If your engine RPM changes that you know you’ve got a vacuum leak somewhere...To isolate the vacuum leak use soapy water mixture in a spray bottle and spray around the intake where the suspected leak maybe...And a vacuum leak Cause bubbles to form when you go to the throttle
Check the mid body gasket on the carb and check the throttle slide for excessive wear (the carb body may be worn as well,The telltale sign of this is the infamous wandering Idle when warm)...Also Excelerator pump timing can be the culprit...You may be experiencing a Rich bog instead of a lean bog if you’re leak jet isn’t correct or you don’t have one (like my carb) ...The good news is the FCR carburetor can be tuned it just about every throttle position
Got mine on Amazon but I have since moved to the Magura hydraulic…it was around 250 bucks but well worth it …I too had to customize the easy pull box to work…after about a year I noticed the shorty cable was stretching and wasn’t disengaging my clutch properly
Just got into riding dirtbikes and picked up one of these recently. I like that hot start lever you have I found the link to the lever on the comments but do you have the link to the cable
Luis Cordero thank you for watching ...here’s a link to my other video with the part #s in the video...ua-cam.com/video/AOOSAl3bPDo/v-deo.html. you’ll have to pause it write down the number and Amazon the fuck outta that shit 👍
Hey mate I've got an 01 wr426 would that decomp lever work on it? I figure it would so would you have a link to it I'd love to get it so I don't blow my engine up if I hit a branch or something
Pezza no problem and yes it’s for the Honda hot start but it fits the Yamaha perch just fine, the only thing to be concerned about is how worn out your cable is. Mine was shot and I couldn’t depress the lever easily...keep in mind it’s still a tiny bit harder to push over the stock lever however with gloves and a mans hand you should have no problem
@@localenterprisebroadcastin5971 alright sweet I'll get it ordered! Thanks for the help, I'm super keen to get the bad boy ready for the bush it's an absolute GUN of a bike
Do you have a link for the hot start lever on your right side of the bike. I bought my bike used recently. It has a full set of hot cams but the lever for it is red right next to the choke. it is such a pain to constantly have to reach down to pull it out and then push it back in after firing the bike. I would greatly appreciate if you have a link that you could share for a lever like yours. Also if you have a link for the steering stabilizer you use I would be interested in that as well
Realize this video is older but wanting to know what shift lever you are running? I hate the stock one, to get it where I need it to be I cannot fully seat the splines without it rubbing the case. Thanks
Jeremy Kyle I’ve had similar issues even with my aftermarket one ...but it’s an MSR shift lever...i had to bend it slightly to be where I like it. I don’t have the part number as it was equipped with the bike when I bought it...having said that it seems to working very well and has taken plenty of punishment 👍
Bikelife Mikey The lever you speak of is called the decompression lever, stock motors require one, I do have one but I don’t need it to start because of the updated exhaust cam. I highly recommend that modification 👍
They certainly do when they’re this old...but get it all back to the way it was(minus the WR cams😉) and that thing will run forever...I’ve tons of tips on this bike so be sure to check out my other content in the 426 playlist...perhaps you’ll find something helpful 🤷🏼♂️
Good question 👍 it’s so I know I’ve properly torqued the fastener to factory specs and tell me if certain fasteners comes loose. It’s a trick I picked up wrenching in the military
Hey man, im considering picking up a 2001 YZ426F and ive been told that they have problems with valves and they are quite hard to start. Is that true? How is your 426 going?
Sick bike, I had an 02 back in the day. One of my favourite bikes ever, & I’ve had a stack of bikes, still got em. If you find 1 in good condition, grab it straight away. Just service it, change the oil every 5-10 hours, you’ll have no drama’s. How I recommend you start it, is to kick it over as far as the kickstart goes, take it up all the way, push decomp lever in, kick it a quarter way, come back up to full stroke, ( kickstart at its highest point ) , let go of decomp lever & give it a filthy ol kick. Start every time.
@@peterdalmationcro4217 thanks for the reply man! I ended up getting the 426 about a month ago now although it ended up being a 450 but I still got it and I absolutely love it, I absolutely love the pre aluminium frame YZ's
Rocky mountain High riders well there’s a few options...the easiest way is install a rechargeable cordless drill battery to the underside of your seat (in the air box area) ...that should give you a few hours of lighting if you’re using LEDs...the other option is to find a stator & flywheel off of one of the WR models or buy the 500 dollar conversation kit from “Ricky Stator” (a damn good stator shop based outta California) ...unfortunately with these 426s Yamaha only gave ya enough juice to run the ignition ...if you’re planning on racing in the super Moto I would go with the cordless battery set up ...a larger stator for lighting completely robs the engine of power and the heavier flywheel will slow the revs significantly compared to stock...
@@localenterprisebroadcastin5971 hey thanks for the tip ive been looking at the stator and flywheel option to be able to run lighting I'm planning on getting my 426 street legal do you know If there is a kit that makes this a pretty simple conversion
Total investment so far around is 2800 to 3000 bucks including purchasing the bike...keep in mind i blew this bike up once already (my fault) so I should be $650.00 to 800.00 bucks less...most of my expense was on the cams. I got most of my performance increase from the head work, carb mod and high compression piston, pretty much a budget build .
I am from Austria and I have been looking for something like this but i cunt find such a thing in my country😅 Therefore I would be very greatful if you could send me a link from this thing😅😂🙈
Yes ...when you like to wrench on the weekends and beer is involved it’s a good idea to mark the fasteners you’ve already torqued properly 👍 it’s easy to miss bolts when they’re all the same color 😉
Yeah that seems perfect. I have 15/48 currently because I’ll be mixing in some street riding going from trail to trail. I’d like the 14/48 better power wise, but for the street it would prefer the little wider ratio. When I had the engine apart I wish I had thought of putting a wr transmission in there. Or at least just the 4th and 5th if that’s possible
@@frankiemarchese2978 right!?? My only complaint about this bike is the transmission and clutch...but to be fair it was designed to race against 250 s strokes (which is does exceedingly well) ...I too have a 15 tooth but I only use it wide open desert 🤷🏼♂️...my bike is strictly off road...for me it 13 for dunes and mountain single track...14 for everyday riding and track...15 for desert or super Moto...I recommend switching out the stock cams for a set of hot cams...I only did the stage one and what an amazing difference for running the taller gearing...put it this way I haven’t even used my 13 tooth since I switched the cams 😂
@@frankiemarchese2978 the funny thing is my bike has been built and has no problem passing the new bikes on the track...probably because I’m not hauling around a big stupid heavy starter, battery and electric fuel pump...I remember when the 426 was considered “heavy” ...shit most new bike out weigh it by a good 10-15 lbs 😂😂😂
Yeah no joke, they designed it to feel like a 250 2 stroke and they did a good job. I’ll look into those cams one day. For now im happy with the oem motor.
Yehudi Marin shit I did forget that... I’ll update the description in a day or so...check back at the end of the week ...thanks for the view and the comment 👍
Yeah they can be a bitch to start if there not set up right, first thing is a richer pilot jet, then check your valve lash, rarely is it an ignition issue but it can be, make sure the plug is new and the flywheel is clean of debris... other than that these bikes are reliable as fuck
I tell ya what once it's up and going its awesome! I was rippin around yesterday once the bike is warm it starts right up it's that first Initial start.
Austin Werner MX thanks for the comment 👍 good luck with your super moto build and to answer you question it’s so I know I’ve torqued the bolt properly after re-assembling major components...a trick I learned from wrenching in the military...but a lot of race teams do it as well
Austin Werner MX copy this part # R132100013 into amazon and it will bring it up...it’s been updated in design since I last purchased mine...be advised though my decomp cable is brand new so it’s not much effort but if your cable is worn or old you might need a strong thumb 👍
Hi Austin, super moto conversion done ? how does it feel like riding on streets? as an MX bike it should have close loop clutch gearing right ? how many gears does it have ?
Can you link the lever and perch’s as well I like the the decompression lever turned 180 degrees I was worried about it being pushed while riding and I like the set up you have
Chase Jenkins I know the front fender can be swapped with the new ones and rumor has it that the 450s with the steel frame plastics fit and are lighter
Trey Swingo for the easy starting yes. Just the exhaust is all you need, but if you want increased performance getting both is the best option. A shim kit is required for both. I got lucky and only needed to shim my intake but it’s good to have a kit around if you plan on keeping the bike for a while. The valves do need to be adjusted periodically with shims, having the kit keeps ya from making several trips to the shop for one or two shims

Ok for some reason my first response didn’t go through
Check the mid body gasket on the carb and check the throttle slide for excessive wear (the carb body may be worn as well,The telltale sign of this is the infamous wandering Idle when warm)...Also Excelerator pump timing can be the culprit...You may be experiencing a Rich bog instead of a lean bog if you’re leak jet isn’t correct or you don’t have one (like my carb) ...The good news is the FCR carburetor can be tuned it just about every throttle position
Thanks now i know what i relly need 💯
Can you link to the easy clutch lever unit? I bought one that didnt fit

@@localenterprisebroadcastin5971 it says it for Honda's is it ok to retrofit to the Yamaha

@@localenterprisebroadcastin5971 Thank you
Jeremy Kyle thank you for watching and I hope your beast stays strong 💪
I just picked one of these up a couple weeks ago , have you had any issues with the water pump seal?
Yes just recently as a matter of fact…they’re cheap and easy to replace
Just picked up a 2002 for $800 but it smokes like a train.
Just get a new top end…hopefully the cylinder is ok 🤷🏼♂️
I have a 01 426f I have a lever I have to hold and release when I kick why don’t you have one?
Bikelife Mikey The lever you speak of is called the decompression lever, stock motors require one, I do have one but I don’t need it to start because of the updated exhaust cam. I highly recommend that modification 👍
local enterprise broadcasting ohhhh okay
Bikelife Mikey He literally talked all about it in the video lol.
Where did u get that pound reducer at I've been looking for it and can't find that exact one?
Amazon but it seems to be discontinued…I’ve since upgraded to the Magura hydraulic clutch
Type this into Amazon “B097DZNDQL” and it will bring up a similar model
Is that all you need to install it
Just bought a used wr426 02 model for 1500. Its a beast but it needs some love.
They certainly do when they’re this old...but get it all back to the way it was(minus the WR cams😉) and that thing will run forever...I’ve tons of tips on this bike so be sure to check out my other content in the 426 playlist...perhaps you’ll find something helpful 🤷🏼♂️

42 pilot 170 main…but depending on your elevation and time of year you might have to run bigger or smaller

@@localenterprisebroadcastin5971 what's the easiest way to run lighting to be able to make street legal?

Brandon Nguyen I’m sure it depends on how heavy and tall you are 🤷🏼♂️ I weight bout 190 and it holds me just fine 👍
I feel like it has enough power already
we have the same motocross.
im from italy
what did you use for the shorty decompression level? I want to buy that
Go to amazon and type in “universal hot start lever” choose your color and it’ll be there in a few days 👍
How much you spend on it all?
Total investment so far around is 2800 to 3000 bucks including purchasing the bike...keep in mind i blew this bike up once already (my fault) so I should be $650.00 to 800.00 bucks less...most of my expense was on the cams. I got most of my performance increase from the head work, carb mod and high compression piston, pretty much a budget build .
Sick set up I want the same for my bike
Could you make a list of the added on parts
2001wr426 have 1 a beast 👍🏾👍🏾
Pound reducer clutch link? Pls😅😅
Objectively hilarious 😂 It’s cheap but it works🤷🏼♂️
I am from Austria and I have been looking for something like this but i cunt find such a thing in my country😅 Therefore I would be very greatful if you could send me a link from this thing😅😂🙈
You made the list?
Is there any reason for that color on the bolts?
Yes ...when you like to wrench on the weekends and beer is involved it’s a good idea to mark the fasteners you’ve already torqued properly 👍 it’s easy to miss bolts when they’re all the same color 😉
Gotcha! 🍻
Hey man, did you put intake cams in the engine as well as an exhaust?
Sure did...boy what a difference 👍 gotta buy a shim kit but it’s worth it ...really wakes up the mid and high range
What gear ratio do you run? 14 or 15 in the front? Ive seen people do 13 too 🤷♂️
My current gearing is 14 - 48...I drop to a 13 when I’m in the dunes with a paddle
Did u happen to make the list ?
Yehudi Marin shit I did forget that... I’ll update the description in a day or so...check back at the end of the week ...thanks for the view and the comment 👍
What does vapor meter do
The vapor computer tells you hrs of engine operation, engine temp, air temp, MPH, RPM’s etc
Just got one of these definitely need to get some of these mods because kicking it is a bitch after a while lol
Where can I find that seat?
Robert Pacheco Amazon...but that was last year...I don’t know if it’s still available...eBay also had it but it was more expensive

Austin Werner MX thanks for the comment 👍 good luck with your super moto build and to answer you question it’s so I know I’ve torqued the bolt properly after re-assembling major components...a trick I learned from wrenching in the military...but a lot of race teams do it as well
local enterprise broadcasting ah ok thats a good idea, also where did u get the clutch/decomp lever combo. Couldnt find it
Austin Werner MX a paint marker is your best friend especially after a few beers and chief 😉
Austin Werner MX copy this part # R132100013 into amazon and it will bring it up...it’s been updated in design since I last purchased mine...be advised though my decomp cable is brand new so it’s not much effort but if your cable is worn or old you might need a strong thumb 👍

Chase Jenkins I know the front fender can be swapped with the new ones and rumor has it that the 450s with the steel frame plastics fit and are lighter
Do the 426 foul plugs
Mine hasn’t...but anything can foul the plug if it’s not running correctly
Sometimes the needle guide pin
Can bure and let to much fuel flow in and flour up the plug
Do you just need one hot cam?
Trey Swingo for the easy starting yes. Just the exhaust is all you need, but if you want increased performance getting both is the best option. A shim kit is required for both. I got lucky and only needed to shim my intake but it’s good to have a kit around if you plan on keeping the bike for a while. The valves do need to be adjusted periodically with shims, having the kit keeps ya from making several trips to the shop for one or two shims
