I have my motorcycle licence since October 10th, and was looking up the 426F, when I got to your series about the bike. I love to watch it, and does not discourage me from buying a YZ426! Thanks for the content!
Love how you used the correct spanner to remove the top oil line, and an old green crescent to put it back on, lol. Nice series of videos, its always a great feeling to fix an engine and have it fire up.
You can make a really great ultra sonic cleaner with an old sink with a cheap sander glued ,screwed , siliconed to the bottom. put in some hot water and pinesol in it and turn it on. I used to do it with a bucket and a sander but have up graded the shop..well worth the effort.
Hey Jennies Garage, i have seen folks use a paper cut out in dire consequences when they dont have a replacement seal handy, its nice to see that you are re-using a lot of the existing stuff :) loved your video..Kudos from India :)
How i have seen it done is to use the cover( clutch cover ) in this case and get its impression on a sheet of paper and then cut it out, these are work-arounds that we use in India. Cheers, Amit
Just replaced water pump bearing and both seals on my 2005 yzf 450 this vid was very helpful I'm going to get oil and coolant now and start her up!! Hope nothing leaks off the bat there's so many gaskets and washers I hope I put it back correctly but I think I did. Fingers crossed
for better clutch performance. for the 1st plate closest to the inside, replace it with a regular disk then keep the pattern going with the friction plates. the 1st plate is usually thinner than the rest
Good video, but I have a comment on the water pump seals. As coolant ages it becomes acidic and eats away at the seals and the impeller shaft. The water seal at the front fails first because it is in direct contact with the coolant at all times. After the water seal fails, coolant occupies the space between the water seal and oil seal and starts eating away at the oil seal. There is a weep hole that opens to the space between the water and oil seals. Its purpose is to let you know when water seal fails, so you can fix it before the oil seal fails. The oil seal is a FAILSAFE designed to prevent engine damage from coolant-oil mixing. The point is, by the time you're mixing coolant and oil, BOTH seals have already failed. By reusing the oil seal, you are removing the failsafe, which means the water pump seal is the only thing between you and more repairs. Forgive me if I'm telling you stuff you already know. Love the videos.
HELLO. I HAD A TICKING ON MY LEFT HAND SIDE OF MY MOTOR. IT AS HOT AT THAT POINT BUT IT WAS TICKING LOUDER THEN USUAL. WHEN I GOT IT HOME I TORE IT DOWN RATHER THEN BLOW IT UP. THE BOTTOM END WAS GREAT, THE PISTON LOOKS GOOD... CAM CHAIN LOOKS HEALTHY BUT THE TENSIONER LOOKED LIKE IT WAS ALL THE WAY OUT. ALSO THE SPARK PLUG CAME OUT WITH MY FINGERS. WHERE DO YOU THINK THE TICKING COULD HAVE POSSIBLY COME FROM ?
hey bud idk if you have the bike still but one thing you should do is run straight coolant. the reason being is ur clutch cover is made of magnesium and over years that gets pitted beyond recognition and can eventually go everything mixing water and oil. I know this because it happened to my 88 cr500 because I ran 50/50 water coolant. so yea just a little heads up if u want to extend the life of the bike. great vid though really enjoyed it
I know, that bright orange silicone looks terrible! I'm miles away from civilization though, and really didn't want to wait for more parts in the mail.
shout yourself some grey silicone "Sika" is very good, in a gun. problem is any silicone needs cleaning off each time, but economical for your purposes :) cleans up, matching colour too
Hey i just got a yz426 yesterday! Thry said it ran but i couldn't start it, the carb bolts were stripped but was able to spray enough brake cleaner in there to free it up, had same problem with needle valve as you did.. now it started right up!! Yaay but now just like you AGAIN i have rusty water leaking out of the weap hole for the pump, but my oil looks free of water... looking online i see a few different water pump kits some have that bolt/rod/shaft thing some dont and have the case gasket instead.. what is the part that makes it leak out of the weap hole? Would i need a new shaft? Do i have to take off the whole case cover or can i install it just taking off water pump housing? Aaagh idk what to order! Ps. Edit.. It looks like the water pump kits for the yz450 from 03-09 work is that correct? There are alot more options when u type yz450...
***** hi just wonderd if you could help shed some light on a problem i have a 01 yzf 426 and the motor runs away with itself mainly when hot if you let the clutch out in gear it drops for 2 seconds the revs right up on its own i suspect it may be intake valves not entirely shutting off but would appreciate opinions of other before i start stripping thanks,
good work..but don't be cheap lol, should've bought a new water pump impeller, new side cover gaskets, and new oil filter. those are really important..
Thanks for easy step by step. I wouldn't have attempted my water pump fix without your vid. Yzs are known for this, from my asking around. Update on this bike? Did u keep it? I was relieved when I wiggled my clutch and it didn't do what yours did. Thanks for the idea. Craigslist gets addictive for scoring sweet used bikes. Please buy an xr650r dual sport so I can learn more!!!!
you shouldn't have reused the oil filter especially after the gasoline bath because all the containment you washed off were dispersed into the gas bath and then into the clean side of the oil filter. mistake, but now ya know.
hello I am the jorge Portugal and would like to thank because and I see your videos because I own one of a wr 400 f (yz 400) and had problems in the water pump and got Repair thanks to videos among many other problems already had since bought the bike in olx of Portugal and the same as the (craigslist) THANKS; -)
Okay thanks man, If your interested in seeing another build i have it on miniriders com in dirtbikes and full sizes I'm building mine from a box of bits :P thats how i bought it.. (how ever its the wr 426 not too far off your engine)
NEED ADVICE ~~Okay so i really need some advice, any would be great, i own a 02' yz426f and the clutch boss, not the baskit, i was stupid and didnt bend the tabs back to hold the nut on, well i was doing holeshots and the nut worked it way off and i basically lost half my clutch, nothing was broke just it was really loose, my buddy says im gonna smoke the bearing and that my gear on my crank will be no good shortly i really need advice
Hi, thanks for the comment. I put everything together according to factory diagrams. You're right when I first tore into it the nut wasn't tight but most of the wiggle in the clutch was from the worn out basket. The steel sleeve with splines that is pressed into the aluminum basket was loose. Cheers!
***** so the washer has splines on and bits to fold over onto the nut to stop it from undoing just I dident see it on before the nut was put on it looks like they was not bent over before thats how the basket wore out before good luck and I subed
drz400smk7 Thanks for the sub, yeah that washer is supposed to keep it tight. Evidently it was no match for years of abuse by the previous owners though.
Loving these videos but man you make me entirely nauseous with this open engine work in the dirty environment! Hoping when I finish this series that I'll find more projects from you.
hello guys, can someone tell me please if the water pump seals on this video is the same with the yamaha wr450f(2003)? I will also like to know the codes (part codes) for this seals...P.S. I have yamaha wr450f (2003) 5TJ2-040.. Thanks a lot!!
i dont know if you have or not but you should start a patreon and at the end of each video have a montage of people abusing motorcycles set to sarah mclachlan and show everyone how for just $1 a month, they can prevent these beautiful machines from torture and neglect and give them a new home at jennies garage
nope I'm old school permatex and a new gasket is in order here, do the job right from start to finish, or don't do it at all. Let a professional do it instead.
man, you're brave... knowing that engine had water in it, it may have been a good idea to split the case and inspect the bottom end. any rust on any bearing and they are sure to fail... and that gets expensive....
I cringed when you smacked the water pump bearing into the case with that wooden bat.. I know you can’t because you’re not stripping everything out of the cases , usually it’s a good idea to put the bearings in a really cold freezer to shrink them a bit, and throw the cases in the oven on the lowest temp you can for 20 mins, after that the bearings should slip into the cases with no problems.. if you can’t do that , take a rag, a socket that matches the outer race of the bearing and tap it in with that so you don’t damage the inner race of the bearing
wipe off the excess RTV while its wet..no trace of backyard mechanics ;) a new oil filter is probably about the same cost as the fuel you sat it in haha... that bike was so neglected by tards...
love the vids man but i cant stand to watch this Yamaha stuff.... need to read a service manual or do some more research... and I cant believe you put that water pump shaft back in with the wear showing on it... holy...
Why would you EVER reuse and old oil filter are you kidding me? Would you reuse a paper towel after you cleaned up shit with it? They’re cheap just get a new one
its the yamaha problem i have it care for like crazy and just the same problems now for the 2 time ist just a bad model that yamaha made and bad luck if you got one
I have my motorcycle licence since October 10th, and was looking up the 426F, when I got to your series about the bike. I love to watch it, and does not discourage me from buying a YZ426! Thanks for the content!
This guy is a natural on camera. I am enjoying this build, the ole switcharoo was pretty slick.
dude you are good. you practically rebuilt a engine 1 handed
Ducaducs100 thanks! Luckily the hard stuff (lower end, tranny, etc) were still good.
indeed respect
I love how you do all this work with ONE HAND!!. You are pro level, kudos.
Love how you used the correct spanner to remove the top oil line, and an old green crescent to put it back on, lol. Nice series of videos, its always a great feeling to fix an engine and have it fire up.
probably by the end of the job I just wanted to get it done and grabbed whatever was close!
You can make a really great ultra sonic cleaner with an old sink with a cheap sander glued ,screwed , siliconed to the bottom. put in some hot water and pinesol in it and turn it on. I used to do it with a bucket and a sander but have up graded the shop..well worth the effort.
Great to see an old reliable thumper put back together, the yz400f and yz426f are very reliable 4 strokes to own
hey - i appreciate the way you soliloquize as you work. ive watched a dozen or so of your programs - thumbs up on all. thanks.
Hey Jennies Garage, i have seen folks use a paper cut out in dire consequences when they dont have a replacement seal handy, its nice to see that you are re-using a lot of the existing stuff :) loved your video..Kudos from India :)
Amit Divekar Thanks for the comment. I've used paper gaskets once or twice before, but never tried it for a seal. Interesting idea though :)
How i have seen it done is to use the cover( clutch cover ) in this case and get its impression on a sheet of paper and then cut it out, these are work-arounds that we use in India.
Cheers,
Amit
Sweet vid! Love the tracheotomy on the silicon tube.
Great video! be sure to change the oil like every 30 min of riding about 3 times to clean out that crank case!
Good job! I bet it will work fine
really nicely done - loved the detailed explanations and gotchas!
for better clutch performance. for the 1st plate closest to the inside, replace it with a regular disk then keep the pattern going with the friction plates. the 1st plate is usually thinner than the rest

Ty for sharing videos. I can watch and learn from it.... God bless
yep, now get that kx running and you will be having a LOT of fun!
Very helpful, just bought a 01 426f that has bad pump seals
Mark Thompson Good luck with the new project, glad you liked the video.

should just bought a gasket to be safe but love your vids

i hope the previous owner stumbles upon this to realize how stupid he is for neglecting such a fine machine
Awesome videos man!!! Thank you!!😁👍
I know, that bright orange silicone looks terrible! I'm miles away from civilization though, and really didn't want to wait for more parts in the mail.
your investigation is very good
shout yourself some grey silicone "Sika" is very good, in a gun. problem is any silicone needs cleaning off each time, but economical for your purposes :) cleans up, matching colour too
The one handed mechanic
you are a bloody ledgend !!!

Did the washer not suppose to go on before outer clutch basket
A crescent wrench and RTV....Good luck!
your pretty darn good with just one had most of the time to! ha great vids!
haha thanks! I should ask santa claus for a tripod!
***** hi just wonderd if you could help shed some light on a problem i have a 01 yzf 426 and the motor runs away with itself mainly when hot if you let the clutch out in gear it drops for 2 seconds the revs right up on its own i suspect it may be intake valves not entirely shutting off but would appreciate opinions of other before i start stripping thanks,
The Mrs. says I should wear them :)
good work..but don't be cheap lol, should've bought a new water pump impeller, new side cover gaskets, and new oil filter. those are really important..
Looking better and better :-))
haha yes, baby steps :)
Finally!, have been waiting, checking ur channel daily for the update, and finally u uploaded it!
Keep the videos coming mate, i enjoy'em! :D
I'm just trying to figure out why you didn't swap engines with the 02 and bench that one? Did you sell the other one?
Thanks for easy step by step. I wouldn't have attempted my water pump fix without your vid. Yzs are known for this, from my asking around. Update on this bike? Did u keep it? I was relieved when I wiggled my clutch and it didn't do what yours did. Thanks for the idea. Craigslist gets addictive for scoring sweet used bikes. Maybe a go pro head or chest mount is in order so you can use both hands. Just a thought.
Just brought a new water pump kit for my yz426f and but it still leaking u got any idea
Shouldnt there be a thrust washer in the basket between the clutch boss/hub?
you could have used a power tooth brush or a water pick works good also, or a can of break cleaner
hello friend a question when damaging the seal of the water pump would pass oil to the coolant?
you shouldn't have reused the oil filter especially after the gasoline bath because all the containment you washed off were dispersed into the gas bath and then into the clean side of the oil filter. mistake, but now ya know.
when you cleaned the oil filter and reinstalled it do you dry it then install it? or just put it in wet?
hello I am the jorge Portugal and would like to thank because and I see your videos because I own one of a wr 400 f (yz 400) and had problems in the water pump and got Repair thanks to videos among many other problems already had since bought the bike in olx of Portugal and the same as the (craigslist) THANKS; -)
hey jennies garage.. when you take your clutch spring off does the bolt that holds them only have a washer on them or do they have a retainer setup?
zwebx Hi, The clutch spring bolts just have a washer that pushes against the spring.
Okay thanks man, If your interested in seeing another build i have it on miniriders com in dirtbikes and full sizes
I'm building mine from a box of bits :P thats how i bought it.. (how ever its the wr 426 not too far off your engine)
How did u put the seals in u didn’t show us now I’m confused how to install
Good job getting the YZ back together.....reusing the oil filter is false economy, tho.....
Nice Job
Broken seals causes water and oil mix???
Did you ever take the clutch cover off too?
Mama mia you are pro fusercina......
Hi i recently changed my water pump seal on my yz426 but still find the oil and water was mixing
Did anyone else have an anxiety attack watching this guy?
Not only does the rtv around the edge looks tacky but it's a pita to clean up if you need to take it apart again 😐
where do you go for parts?
What oil do you use
I love your videos
+the beast gamer Thank you!
so i have 2001 yz426 and even after about 1 minute of run time my engine oil is white with coolant on it? any ideas what this could be? head gasket?
NEED ADVICE ~~Okay so i really need some advice, any would be great, i own a 02' yz426f and the clutch boss, not the baskit, i was stupid and didnt bend the tabs back to hold the nut on, well i was doing holeshots and the nut worked it way off and i basically lost half my clutch, nothing was broke just it was really loose, my buddy says im gonna smoke the bearing and that my gear on my crank will be no good shortly i really need advice
Did you put the lock washer on the clutch nut thats how the clutch was loose good job man
Hi, thanks for the comment. I put everything together according to factory diagrams. drz400smk7
Thanks for the sub, yeah that washer is supposed to keep it tight. Evidently it was no match for years of abuse by the previous owners though.
some news ? about the yz?
Pretty late here but isn't that supposed to be a wet clutch?
It is a wet clutch.
no new oil filter??? or gasket?
This was the metal screen type, so I was able to clean it.
Loving these videos but man you make me entirely nauseous with this open engine work in the dirty environment!
Hoping when I finish this series that I'll find more projects from you.
Ain't a seal supposed to go on both sides of the water pump bearing
hello guys, can someone tell me please if the water pump seals on this video is the same with the yamaha wr450f(2003)? I will also like to know the codes (part codes) for this seals...P.S. I have yamaha wr450f (2003) 5TJ2-040.. Thanks a lot!!

Good stuff, but I think you should have not saved on something so important and cheap as an oilfilter. I recommend you get a new one.
Are u a mechanic?
racing 2 strokes arent supposed to idle real well
nope I'm old school permatex and a new gasket is in order here, do the job right from start to finish, or don't do it at all. Let a professional do it instead.
Nice
Should get a gasket. That silicone junk might fall in the engine and plug an oil passage causing major damage
No it won't
man, you're brave... knowing that engine had water in it, it may have been a good idea to split the case and inspect the bottom end. any rust on any bearing and they are sure to fail... and that gets expensive....
Why gloves?
Where's cam girl
I have never seen that much metal debris on an oil filter. Bad sign.
I cringed when you smacked the water pump bearing into the case with that wooden bat.. The sad thing is your new second hand parts are most likely stolen and then sold :(
its the yamaha problem i have it care for like crazy and just the same problems now for the 2 time ist just a bad model that yamaha made and bad luck if you got one
Hack
I was quite happy to watch this vid until you broke out the RTV, not fitting a gasket really is a bodge!
Hmm, followed by a crappy adjustable spanner and then followed by cleaning the filter rather then replacing it!
