This has been a fun series so far and this episode is no different. We finally get some walls on our budget overland trailer as well as add some structure inside.
She is going to be heavy but durable and I think over all this will still be super affordable compared to what else is available in the overland trailer market.

Yes. Rear door, access is always important. Seems like you always pack more than you think. Love the channel man. You got me into fabing showing that you can build nice stuff with minimal tools.

maybe a quick hatch for a first Aid Kit or some emergency kit/ fire extinguisher...
I'm thinking once you get the trailer up on the 6" wheel chocks and start using it, the table is going to be too tall. Mine was the same on my M1101 build, and ended up moving it lower. Especially if you want to use a Partner Stove of anything on top of it.
Love where you are going with this so far. Looks amazing. Maybe you can include a 270° cheap awning from overland pros and add your shower and potty setup on the other side. Looking great Nate!
I completely agree this table is going to be tall. I'm trying to decide on how to deal with that. The issue is if I move it lower I will need to change the shape. I will brainstorm on this while I build my wifes gladiator next week 👊
I thoughtbthe dame exact thing. Also I'd add side access to the fridge . Back home in Australia they have fridge holders that pull out and drop. It would make it easier to get wuick access to the fridge thile travelling. If you wanted a slide out kitchen that runs across the front would solve multiple issues at once giving you a full slide out kitchen that locks away then the back section could open up from the top aswell for access to storage from the rear.
@@DirtLifestyle could you make the hinges taller so it still stores where you want, but drops lower for use? Also, I see why you did it, but having that lip around the edge of the table might get irritating during long periods of use.

Build is looking excellent🍺👍 Lots of comments on the table height and rear access. I'm a yes on rear a access door. Also, I would think reaching into the pantry hole with the depth of that table could be tricky for the vertically challenged. Just my opinion though and not a criticism👍👍

I like the lightweight practicality and low maintenance style of the expanded metal table. Maybe if it proves to not be strong enough, then you could go with the diamond plate
Diamond plate would look nice but keeping it light weight to me at least is more important. As far as the door for the rear I’d consider putting it on the driver side rear. Pulling stuff out of that small hole in the back can be a nightmare.

Expanded metal table is great… definite rear door. You could put an “open door” warning light on the front of the trailer that you could see in the rear view of a tow vehicle for safety
Wire switches in series for all doors and tie into this light.

I’m digging the current table especially for cleaning, and a big yes on adding a rear door!
I actually question the cleanability of it tho. It's cleanable when you have a hose nearby eith infinite water but at camp you can't simply wipe it down. Has an upside and downside for sure. Maybe a plastic sheet of some sort as an inlay can solve that

Great build. Love the content. Keep the expanded metal table like it is, much better than solid metal, and definitely add the rear compartment door.
The expanded steel looks great and is light, but there's a reason no kitchens or restaurants have tables with holes. I'd try to prep on it, gonna get messy. Also it's not flat so small items won't stay level.
I'd definitely have a rear door. Remember some cars had the gas cap behind the license plate? Put the handle behind it for a stealth look.

This has been a great build so far. I have enjoyed the videos! I'm on the fence with the expanded metal. It wouldn't be budget friendly, but I would see about a stainless table top in some way. Expanded metal tends to be kinda sharp and potential for rust, which wouldn't be good for an area where your prepping food.
Great episode, love watching your concepts come to life. I would suggest a stainless table top, easier to clean and more food safe. Back door for sure, climbing in to get gear is gonna get annoying pretty quick. Great T designs!
The table top is good the way it is. Looks good, light, and it's done already. Leave it my dude. You will kick yourself if you don't put a door in the back. If you want want make sure you don't drive off with the door open, you can wire a normally open switch in the back to a little led signal light on the front. When the door is open the light is on.
Haha when you said "as soon as I started working on it i abandoned all my original plans" that spoke to my inner self. Sometimes hands on something clicks and you say ahh yes that's better. Looking killer my friend.

Three things Nate:
1. You can never have enough doors
2. Yes, go with a diamond plate tabletop. You'll be kicking yourself when that meatball or shrimp falls through the hole onto the ground.
3. You might want to consider not putting a cable to hold up the table near the fridge. It might get in the way as you 're taking stuff out of the fridge to put it on the table. Maybe use a support from underneath the tabletop instead.
I'm enjoying this series. Like you, I make changes as I go along, which includes stupid mistakes.
Rear door…absolutely yes, easy access to gear in the rear. Expanded metal table? Love it, clean up will be so easy, only issue is if you are camped for an extended period the food that will inevitably fall through could attract animals. Love the build so far.

Door in back for sure. On the side with no doors you can mount all kinds of stuff - jerry cans, bikes, whatever. Awesome build.
Idea: make rear angled piece fold down with molle panel or other mounts for tools, recovery gear, first aid, etc. Also provide added interior access to a special area, with drain hole, for storage of wet/muddy gear.
Expanded metal is "grate" but small things will fall through. Better flat stainles steel. You can still hose it out. For a sink, consider a stainless steel bowl shaped boating sink. When you fold down the table, the water taps are where the sink WAS when folded up. Sink stopper is a plastic ball valve, drain is a removable hose. Thanks for the videos. Jon
I know this is an older video, but the mesh table is very cool and a back door makes a lot of sense. I dig this trailer.
Yes, definitely put a door on the back! Have you thought about making it another flip down table? You can never have too many tables when camping. On the other table, love it, but I would have mounted it lower to where it rests on the tire for support and once the trailer is on chocks it won't be too high. Love this project!
Stick with the expanded metal. The diamonds in the diamond plate will spill your beer. Lol. Definitely add the door in the back, that will save you from climbing in the front to access the space behind the fridge.

I agree that the expanded metal will clean a lot easier for a table and drain out too as it rains every now and then in the PNW. However, the diamond plate would look rad and give you a flat surface to prep and cut on. With the expanded metal you’d be using a series of cutting boards and surfaces that bits of food and other kitchen messes would fall through. What if you did a diamond plate with a big plasma cut DL logo cut into it for the outside. Then the inside you cut up one of those tailgate food grade cutting boards to fit. Make it removable to clean etc and bobs your uncle. That’s inspiration I got at least watching this video! Keep up the awesome work Nate!
Expanded metal also doubles as a drying rack AND gets rid of the need for sink/drain for your wash station. And yes, add a door. You will never regret access.
I love the expanded steel! All you need is a nice butcher block cutting board that fits inside the lip, and stores away in the trailer.
People always say measure twice cut once but I'll measure 5 times and still cut the damn thing too short so I feel ya man.
Yes an access hatch on the back would be a good idea. Maybe you could have some kind of reflective material on the back hatch that you can see from the driver's side mirror that would show you it is open.
Expanded metal table is perfect. When it gets muddy you can use the water sprayer up there to do a quick rinse off. Also, rear door for sure. In kinda think one one the driver’s side would be nice down the road. Love this series, Nate. Thank you!
For the water use an outdoor spigot. The kind you would hook your garden hose to. Then thread on to it a handheld shower head and hose. A little clip on the side to hold it to wash dishes and with the hose you can use it to wash the kids down. Double use. When in travel you can unscrew it from the spigot and stow it away so it doesn't get damaged
Definitely yes to a rear door. Id also do some kind of delrin or that cutting board material, cut to fit snuggly in the frame of the table. Either full length or partial length, maybe multiple pieces to make it modular. It'll make a perfect working surface. And you can tack in some angle iron to the ceiling of the trailer as a track to slide it into to keep it clean, safe, and out of the way. Fold the table down, pop open the back door, slide out the table top, and sit it on the table.
Rear door is a good idea. I like the expanded metal table. Diamond plate would look better but I think this one is more functional & easier to keep clean. Love the channel and all the ideas from your builds.
Your future self will definitely thank you for adding rear door access.

HDPE would be sweet for the food prep surface. Maybe you could get a few cheap cutting boards and screw them down to the frame. I was thinking about how to seal between them, but then decided a 1/4" gap makes a lot of sense for drainage, then you don't need to worry about trying to make the surface continuous. Some of the cutting boards are outrageously priced, but you need to look for something that hasn't been FDA or NSF approved for a commercial kitchen. HDPE isn't UV resistant so you can apply a coat of paint to the bottom side that will get sun when the table is stowed.
Maybe leave a section of expanded steel for your stove.
You'll regret it if you don't add a rear door. Think of all the things you could stash in there and have access to quickly from the rear.

I say yes to the rear door/hatch as without it you'll be sending a kiddo up in there to grab stuff. I'm thinking like bulky items like chairs, awnings, folding tables, sleeping bags/blankets/pillows all are easy to just throw into that area. Loving the build so far.
I like it ! As far as the table I would consider covering half with a plastic cutting board, you can get large ones at any restaurant supply and cut it to size. Yes to the back door, you don't want to have to crawl in just to grab a bag.
Definitely think a door on the back is a good idea. If you organize it in a way to where the stuff back there isn’t used as often it may not be an issue with leaving it open. Also, I like the expanded steal. Maybe do a mountain hatch type thing on top to have a smooth surface?
Creativity is where it’s at! I built a 5x8 enclosed trailer as a prototype. Lift. 31” mud terrains. Extended tongue. 36”x18”x18” tongue box that houses my two 100 amp hour batteries and all of my electrical. Fuse panel, 110v inlet for shore power or geni and outlets inside, solar input for batteries and input off added 7way for charging while driving. My 12v system runs inside led strips and outside leds, 12v roof vent and cigarette plug with usb plugs for my 12v fridge/freezer. Fully insulated and finished inside. Set up with a diesel heater which I’ve slept in at -15f at an inside temp of 65. Fabricated spare tire mount on the front and stabilizers in back. Roof rack. I have side boxes on the exterior that hold grills axes etc and folds down as tables. I am going to swap them out for a rigid molle panel on each side so I can swap out what I mount to it. Either pelican cases of various sizes fuel/water rotopax etc. These builds are sooo much fun and the shies the limit. Actually the only limit is your imagination. Love your creativity and attention to usability and detail. Keep up the videos.
Table is perfect. More functionality to it this way. Can hang tons of stuff from it for convenience. Nice job once again!
The expanded metal is fine just make some cutting boards that fit the table exactly and store them in the box. I also like the idea of the rear access door especially for cleaning at the end of the trip, just throw a padlock on the door to keep the kids out during the trip.
I like the expanded metal table, maybe a slot somewhere to store a cutting board. Definitely yes to the rear door. For the plumbing above the table, an exterior shower from an RV would work and do double duty

Yes to the rear door, my luck I always need something that's packed all the way in the back. Having access from the front and back helps tremendously.
Keep the expended metal table. Easy cleanup because the yucky stuff will just fall thought. Now having some type of rad insert when you need a solid table top is in order. Yes do a diamond plate rear door. Great blend of off road adventure and fab projects.
My vote would be to rebuild the table using HDPE either marine board for UV or cutting board. Still easy to clean, and very light. The expanded steel will absolutely rip your hands up if you are doing things with it in the dark. Those sharp edges have bit my fingers many times in the past, when I use my small utility trailer for ATV/camp. Great videos, keep it up Nate🤙
Lift gate rear door. Build the lights and plate into it. Youll want the access to the back. Its coming along nicely. Ex metal for the table is a good plan. Light weight, and easy to change if it fails.
I like the expanded metal table for weight and easy clean up.
If you decide on diamond plate you can use aluminum diamond plate, still lightweight and it won’t rust.
And a definite yes to a rear door.
Yes add a rear door, it will be easier for the random kid stuff that is hard to fit elsewhere. Also an idea for the empty wall side is a bike rack for the kiddos bikes. Could even get an ebike on there to charge from a solar system
You're more likely to regret NOT having a door in the back of that trailer than having access, in my opinion. And the expanded steel tables is the way to go for sure. I think there are far more pros than cons to what you did vs. Making one with diamond plate. Love the channel nate, keep doing dope stuff.
The back should be two vertically hinged doors that pop off to become tables. When the doors are off, you could simply snap a custom canvas cover over the opening.
Yes to the rear Door. Put it on a piano hinge so it can either open all the way to straight down or open it halfway to be used as another table to be used as a work area. would need some stored legs to use as posts when at table height.
Best reuse and vast improvement of a inferior item video seen in a long while. On the table nice job with expanded metal. Get 2 piece of UHMW(fancy stone plastic) to fit table. For cleaning fish and other large meal prep.
I have similar expanded steel drop-down shelves on my own off-road trailer for several years… so I’m a fan.
Do a rear door with a pressure switch to a light on the front of the trailer box. When the door is open a small 3/4" odd color (purple, bule, green, white ?) lights up to "remind you" the door is open. Or, to lock the door open you must use the hitch pin that locks the trailer to the vehicle towing it. My $0.02 worth.

Re do table top in ally diamond plate, flush with the top, makes it easier to clean in the trail. The easier mud and water can enter the easier it can stay, that's why the extruded panel you have used is a pain, because you can't clean it without a hose or effort as apposed to the diamond you can clean with a rag and bottle of water.
Also, hole at the front and use a cabin filter, positive air will stop dust and water easily getting in... You can also use drop stays to keep the table level, house kitchen hardware... Might be ugly but it's more reliable than braid because it won't catch something and get ripped off. Love your work bro, your an inspiration ❤
Yes on the rear door and leave the expanded metal table, the weight has got to be adding up on that bad boy. As I’ve said in previous comments on this series I’m going to be curious what the total weight ends up being, especially in comparison to “Store Bought” trailers of the like. Looks great so far though.
Table is perfect with the expanded metal, seal the back and put a door on the side. Rear doors always suck in the dust. And a little something in the blank side will look better
Alternative to back door access is to build a slide out shelf thingy that is the length same as the width of the trailer. Then you would get access to stuff still from your space under the tent. All on one side 🤔
You can even include the fold down table into the slide out and have it all come out on the side. Fold down the table and have acces to shelves over the table 🙃👋🇸🇪
i like the expanded metal top, could help to wash dishes and stuff... throw em all on the tabletop and wash them, then let them dry on it too. you could always just bring a cutting board/cover a portion with a solid top and keep the expanded metal look
Like the expanded metal table, would look good clear coated raw steel against a dark colored wall. Also like the access door on the back, would keep you from having to pull boxes and everything out to access items in the rear. And with a flip up door, would also keep the rain off while moving stuff inside the storage area to your living area.
Finish the rear panel solid and put another gullwing door (the wife thinks side hinge instead for visibility) on the left rear.
We thought the rear access would be a great idea initially until we considered how hard it would be to try and reach down into the bottom of the trailer after small things whereas a left rear door will allow you excellent access to all your stored/stacked gear in every situation.
Plus just cleaning the trailer after a few trips will be made exponentially easier with the left rear and front access panels.
The expanded metal is brilliant for a table top! Alot of people will disagree but for an offroad build it helps with cleanup ten fold. I'm behind on this build so I not sure the next stage but a good idea for the fridge and storage boxes would be a slide out base/table that they sit on to make the access quicker and easier. Overall excellent build! This project has helped me in my pursuit of ideas for the innovation of my projects I have ahead of me. Thanks for the hard work and the ideas you have given me from your creative point of view! Helps me narrow down exactly how my creative ideas will fit my needs without as many roadblocks or speed bumps getting in the way of the creative process

Definitely put a door on the back, drop down could be another table maybe to configure camera gear, but have the cable unlatch to drop down completely. Or fold up with lights under it!
Expanded steel for the kitchen table!! Maybe make a cutting board that fits in it perfectly for cutting food up!
I love the content, I love the theme. I hate thinking about how much time you spend behind the scenes changing camera angles, getting a scene set up, etc.

As other people have suggested, added some sort of tabletop that you can prepare food on. Definitely leave the rear half expanded metal. It'll make a nice drying rack for the dirty dishes.
Expanded metal, cleaning, weight, design 👍👍👍 If you don’t put a door in the back your kids better not grow or who is going to crawl in behind the cooler area and get the stuff from the bag that didn’t get zippered shut. Put a light switch on the door with a small LED on the front that you can see in the drivers side mirror, if it’s on the door is open.
The table: Love the expanded metal. As you said easy to clean and spills will keep on going. I don't like the rim on the top of the table ( would have had it on the bottom). Having to "confine" things within the space on top will be a pain the way it is. The back: Yup a door. Speaking of doors I would redo the front door and put the hinges on the bottom. It would act as another surface (always handy) and you may to be able to avoid the expense and weight of gear sliders/trays (as I thought you were planning). Put the spare and other camp accessories on the "blank" right side. Having said that...I would not have commented unless you asked. Love your thinking and your build skills. And your wife's design skills rock too.
If you wanted a more solid surface for the expanded steel table, you could get some thick acrylic and cut it to fit just inside the angel iron. Then you would still have the expanded steel look but a solid working surface that can be easily removed and cleaned, and also cut down to any size you need/want.
I’m all for the rear door. If it folded down it could be a table/shelf then all the way down to get it out of your way. At one time we had a camp table that had expanded steal section with a a piece to deflect water away. Where we washed the dishes.
The table is perfect and you can wash dishes right over it for cleaning I would do the door on the back and walk off where the large totes are that way you have a big cubby in the back where nothing can slide up around the totes 🙂

Maybe going in through the driver side of the "1/4" panel rear of the exle. 1. If open you'll be able to catch with mirror. 2. Help keep shape in roll over. 3. Reaching in over the angle of tail for equipment may turn out to be more than bargain. Either way, taking shape and looking great, loving the plug weld idea.
Nate, i would suggest putting your water tap/dish washing source in the back rear corner behind whatever door(s) you put back there. Maybe do a 80/20 split door back there with the 80% being on the driver side that swings either up or down for access to gear. The 20% door would be on the passenger side that swings open like a car/house door and hinge it next to the other door. Then when this door is opened, you can have the spigot mountd on the inner door face so the water can be aimed towards the kitchen side, or further rearward. Mayb use one of those plastic multi jointed oiler type hoses for the spigot that can be aimed in any direction.

I'm a fan of the expanded steel table. My thinking is if anything is spilled, it'll just go straight to ground. I have kids and they're always knocking cups and stuff over. I also think the rear door is a good idea.
Expanded metal table is awesome, I would suggest buying a large cutting board that you could cut down to fit firmly in the table that way you have a nice prep/cutting surface
Expanded 👍🏼just spray it off and go, plus cooking spills have little to no cleanup. And absolutely a door in the back I think you'll regret having to climb in to get stuff in the back. Love the build keep it up.

Expanded steel on the table great idea quick wash up if spills happen. Front door great idea I like it maybe have it open up and use a solid prop mechanism so if it's left open and the trailer starts to move it kicks the prop and the door closes.
Yes for the extra door and stainless steel tabletop ( commercial kitchen look ).
The table is perfect as it’s going to get muddy and dirty but you could get a Teflon chunk like cutting board material and store that inside the trailer that will just drop in on top of the expanded
I like the expanded table. If it's a little too floppy and or noisy, you can simply add a couple more pieces of angle iron to make it a shorter span. I am a little concerned about how tall it will be once the trailer is up on the ramps. Especially if you are going to have the kiddos help with dinner prep. And I would definitely put a door on the back. That's a lot of dead space back there that would require you to move those big boxes and basically climb in, in order to access that space. That would be really inconvenient, especially if you are still on the trail and it's dusty, muddy, or snowy. If you put your tail lights on that door, I would have the hinges on the top so they would still be visible, even if it's unlatched for whatever reason. Very cool project. Keep up the good work.
Leave the table as is, but as others have pointed out you might have to adjust the operational height of it and the door in the back is a must. The trailer is going great, you're an ace with that plasma cutter and welder!!!

Hi Nate have a drop down rear door. And consider duplicating the table on the other side of the trailer. This can be used to store either a sand ladder or smaller units to wedge the tyres when parked up. Then can be used to keep things of the ground.

Another yes vote for a rear door, maybe a barn door style like the old Chevy Suburban. I think the side table is great, but if I were you I’d make sure to bring a chopping block or cutting board, some flat surface that food won’t fall through. On a side note, your content is great and I enjoy watching your videos. 👍🏻
Yes! The table looks good and its easy when cooking and washing. Almost nothing to clean.
About the door in the back, yes aswell easier to get stuff in and out!

This thing is turning out awesome!
1. Don't go diamond plate as the bumps are a pain for setting glasses on the table.
2. That table height may be too high when you drive up on the ramps to get the RTT above head height. And if you need to lower the hinge point to get the table down to a good wrking height you can make a taller (deeper) table as well.
3. Hatch in back is good. You don't want to have to unload stuff to get to stuff. The more doors/hatches the better.
Expanded steel works for me. I like it. And yes, another door on the back.
The expanded steel is cool. Every time I see diamond plate it makes me think of tribal arm band tattoos, monster energy drinks and backyard wrestling…
