I actually don't have any noticeable IPS glow. These panels have been out for over a year now and I either lucked out or the QC is better now. I've seen the horrific pictures though. I just took a leap of faith knowing Amazon's return policy. Can't go wrong with either though I'm sure.
+Barros Graphics Dribbling on, blaming the monitor shake when his desk is unstable. Fuckin amateur. Plus the acer has a glossy background. There needs to be a button that's the opposite of subscribe. Can you block channels?
Currently a user of the ASUS PG279Q. I think one thing you missed (correct me if Im wrong, I skipped through a little), is the resolution increase between the two. A single 980ti is a great match for standard 2560x1440 (3.6million pixels) but its still not capable of pushing most modern games past 60fps at max settings by very much at all at this resolution. The X34 has a resolution of 3440x1440 (5m pixels). Thats roughly 25% more pixels, and as such translates to around a 25% performance decrease. The Witcher 3 on max settings runs at 70fps average (no hairworks) at standard 1440p with a single 980ti, so it's gunna run between 50-55fps at 3440x1440. For most people, thats a big deal. Running games at less than 60fps for most high-end PC gamers is almost unacceptable, and as such I believe the following should have been added to your conclusion: - Get the X34 if you; a) Have a mighty graphics card, and b) Dont mind sacrificing graphical quality for the widescreen experience. I for one will probably trade my monitor in for something like the X34 next year; when Nvidia's Pascal GPU is proven, the price of these monitors has dropped and more games support 21:9.
The Asus Pg279Q's build quality is garbage, ive seen 5 of these in the last two weeks and they all suffer terrible back light bleed because the housing isnt secure enough, just slightly pushing on the edges with your fingers allows the whole panel to flex. No idea whats going on with asus but they really dropped the ball here. Finally decided to go with the Acer XB271HU and its flawless, a user over on Overlclock.net took one apart and found the design and quality of the acer to be stellar. So yeah this is technology and things change.
TinFoilCookies I never saw a good review about these new IPS gaming monitors...Everybody is complaining about back light problems...I stick with my 37 inch Samsung TV which is fantastic for gaming.Response time is great and 60hz is more than enough for me...
+Youmer Hasan - I think that has a lot more to do with price than other things. People are a a lot more likely to complain if something they spent a lot of money on isn't 100% perfect. Compared to other monitors they are excellent, but the people who paid a small amount for those monitors are less likely to complain so we don't hear anything about them.
it is pretty common for IPS displays, you could get lucky and win the ips lottery much like how you win the silicone lottery with cpus. The bleed is usually noticable when looking at a black screen. If you are ever going to notice the black light bleed during gaming then it would be during loading screens, assuming the game has dark loading screens
Tyrone melonas So, just to be sure, if i play or watch a movie in a DARK scene i wont notice a normal lvl of BLB? Only when the screen is FULL black? If its this, im sold.
I can't really give you a definitive answer but I have watched a lot of reviews and they all say that the backlight bleed is very hard to notice when gaming or watching movies. It is logical though, if you think about it, most dark scenes feauture an object somewhere that makes the pixels produce colors and since the brightness of the pixels is higher than that of the BLB the BLB gets "drowned out" Most countries you can return items you have bought if you are not satisfied. If you can't go to a hardware store that has these on display then just buy one and return it if the blled bothers you. You could also check out the brother of this monitor, the z35, it has lower resolution, higher refresh rate and a va panel. VA panels are better than regular tn but dont bleed as much as IPS. Personally I think they should have made the x34 a TN since it is for gaming
Howcan you guys tell the backlight bleeding? I haven't seen thsi monitor up close yet and would probably see it right away. I do plan on buying this or waiting fro soemthing now that I'm getting back into pc gaming.
Tyrone melonas You know what, ill just make the jump and buy a PG279Q this month. Everywhere i look people say how crazy good IPS is and BLB id not much of an issue. And like you said if i don't like it Ill just return it.
I bought the x34. Loved the real estate you got and was blown away by the size. Was awesome having the peripheral view in FPS games. However, I ran into the issue when I overclocked the monitor to 100hz. In games, darker areas of the screen or distant objects there were lines across the screen like grid lines. This ruined it for me especially for the price the monitor was. That was a deal breaker for me so I returned the monitor. I then bought the PG279Q. Although it sucked not having the real estate that you got with the x34 this monitor was the best one I've ever owned. You get a perfect resolution for its size and the buttery smooth 165Hz felt great on the eyes. I recommend getting that monitor over the x34 any day.
Nice video review man! I have tried both the Asus PG279Q and Acer Predator XB271HU and in my own personal experience, I find the XB271HU superior in terms of build quality, no BLB at all on the unit I received, and hardly any IPS glow. I probably would not have returned it if it wasn't for a stuck spec of dust at the MIDDLE of the screen. But I'm thankful for that now since that led me to get the Acer Predator X34 and was lucky enough to get one without much issues (minimal BLB, no dead/stuck/bright pixels, no dust, no coil whine, OC's to 100Hz no problem). Like you said though, picking the right gaming monitor depends per person and the games they play. If I was mostly an FPS shooter like you, I probably will go for the PG279Q too or the Acer Z35 that OC's to 200Hz which is also Ultra QHD 21:9 aspect ratio (but only 2440x1080). In my case, I play mostly RPG, MMORPG like the Witcher 3, Blade & Soul, and Black Desert Online. And mannn... the X34 is pure bliss when playing these type of games. Keep up the awesome job on these videos! I kinda want to make my own reviews too but too lazy... lol So yea... I usually just write reviews... XD
+Zen Z hey zen, thanks for the comment. although i would say the asus has better overall 'build' quality, just not the better screen, ha (which is i know what matters). i tried the 271, and while it was a great screen i could not get over the cheap and ragged plastic they used. but yeh man for those games, that 34 inch is so great, totally get why people love it, i'm already missing it! btw, where do you write reviews? wanna write for our site?
Hey bro, just found your channel and watched this and your x34 review. Great videos, you cover everything beautifully and do a great job all around. I picked up the x34 myself back in early December and it has been the best choice I have made in a long time. I was running the Acer XB280HK the 4k Gsync monitor before I bought this.. I thought 4k would be incredible, and for the most part it really was gorgeous, but in my opinion now after doing the 4k thing for around 6 months or more, I believe the tech is just not there yet. 60hz isnt enough, and even with 2 way SLI titanX Hybrids, running 4k/60fps was a challenge in some games. Since I made the switch, ive been able to consistently run games maxed out at 3440x1440 / 100 fps and man oh man what an experience. I totally agree with you for fps gamers it might be a better decision to go with 16:9 144hz, but where Im extremely random in my taste in games (I play pretty much every genre and just love games in general) I think the 21:9 aspect ratio and its added immersion for rpgs and the like was really much more worth it. Plus 100hz really is nothing to sneeze at. It feels so unbelievably smooth compared to 60hz. Anyway man, sorry for the novel, I just get really excited talking about PC hardware and games haha and I really loved your content. Youve got yourself a new sub for sure! Keep up the awesome work.... and actually I have a question for you, Im just wondering if the monitors you reviewed in these videos were bought and paid for by yourself, or if you were given a review sample from the companies themselves?
+Mitchell Hall hey mitchell thanks for the comments, love the passion. i actually agree with everything you say. i definitely miss the acer for desktop usage, 4k just not ready, frame rates beats resolution anyday imo. (well up to a point). as far as the monitors i actually bought them locally at the microcenter
Honestly the huge price tag on the Predator really should have been emphasized more in this video. Considering the fact that the experience on the Acer was still only marginally better than that of the Asus while simultaneously costing almost twice as much, I'm not exactly sure why the Predator was chosen as the winner over the PG279Q.
+LimitedWard It's comparing apples to oranges..... way different size... People aren't making choices between those 2. They're comparing, as I am, the Acer 27" XB271HU to the Asus 27" PG279Q.... Ridiculous comparison of 2 very different size monitors ... Though the guy did a very nice job.
I need to get this straight... Both should have the same field of View, right!? I think what's different is the depth of View (distance between player and object). I have a friend who says curved screens' advantage is the DOV and not the FOV. I need clarification please...
Awesome video! These are basically the choices I'm looking at right now. I remember when I first upgraded my TV from a SD 60hz to a 1080p 120hz....yes, it was a bigger screen and nicer picture, but the single thing I noticed was how fluid everything was. There is a black and white, night and day difference between 60hz and 120hz to me and it would be the worst to go back. That's where my problem lies; I've never used anything higher than 60hz since switching over to PC gaming exclusively, but I still know how important the refresh rate is to the overrall experience. Now, I'm not a huge FPS player, mostly single player RPG/Strategy, so the widescreen makes more sense; however, I know how big of a difference hz makes, which has me questioning. All in all though, since I've only ever PC gamed at 60hz, I think 100hz + widescreen will be more immersive and better for the overall experience than the 165hz 16:9. Nice video again, not biased at all, and good coverage of the different points to consider.
I realize this is a older tech video, but 8 months later I was considering these two monitors. My conclusion is to wait for at least a 144 Hz 21:9 and hopefully that's what the forthcoming ASUS can provide; G-Sync added of course. I'm a CoD player and I refuse to spend $800 and up for a 100 Hz.
Well i thought about the x34,pg279q and even pg278q after a while i realized that x34 costs way too much!! pg279q is cool and everything but the 4ms is a little bit too much (Yes i see the diffrence) so i got the pg278q asus cause i`m only gaming on it and for photoshop, video editing i have my 2 ips panels
Check my comment. Can find ones like mine that are FHD @ 144hz with over clocking up to 180hz for $394 with a 24inch screen 1920x1080p. Not bad. If you MMO/RTS/Race then you got the wide viewing angle and such with multiple displays, Fast Refresh Rate for your FPS's and of course all the adjustments and strong stand to go along with it. Assuming you can't take these off their stand which I hope you can I will desk mount these and add a third to my collection and new rig build. :)
ASUS VE248Q 24" Full HD only $169.99, you Save $60 (26%)>>www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005BZNDHQ/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B005BZNDHQ&linkCode=as2&tag=httpwwwechipk-20&linkId=d33a7b3df28ed7536ace4ed90d104500
You can wait a loooong time for 21:9 with 144hz^^ Because the Bandwith of Displayport 1.2b limits the fps to 100h on 3440x1440p. so yeah... wait a few years for DP 1.3 to be widely available
Hey! I have found 6 white pixels on my screen in different forms on the bottom of the screen. What is that and how i can fix it? Is it worth to keep a new monitor?
on the asus? i had a small issue with mine, (it has a 3 year warranty) they fixed it no problemo, i just had to send my monitor in, they paid for it though) just send them an email on their support site
For highly competitive/pro gaming the only option is 144hz-240hz with 1ms pixel response time. An Ultra wide is out of question here. For regular gaming, media consumption and somewhat competitive play an ultra wide can be considered.
I just built a full new rig this Weekend and with monitors being a very difficult choice and limited with options such as 144hz/size/stands IE Landscape/portrait rotation and the prices I am going with the Acer Predator XB241H 24inch Full HD 1920x1080 with Nvidia G-sync @144hz. I just bought two and will check them out and if all is good I will add a third for that wider viewing angle. I forgot to mention, each can over clock to 180hz with a price tag of $394 for each. Not bad. So for about 1,300 you get your refresh rate, 3 monitors @ 24inchs a piece 1920x1080p with the option to over clock them up to 180hz.
awesome video - you saved me £1000 like. I have the 144hz asus rog version of the 165hz you show here but i was looking to change it to the 34" acer or 34" asus. When you move the screen side to side on BF4 it looks terrible compared to my current monitor. It loks like the sides are stretched out. Id have been really p'd off had i bought the 34" only to discover that issue. Thanks man. Liked, Subscribed and shared to FB. PS - who has that racing simulator with the 3x34" curved screens - awesome like.
I wonder if eventually we can get a 3440x1440 120/144Hz G-Sync Panel. Why compromise when you can have both? Though it would take a monster PC to run, it would be interesting to see.
really trying to build a new pc but only need 2 parts upgrade. GPU and monitor. rightnow running sli 66ti and a DELL normal monitor.... should i get a pg279q and 1070 as next goal for overwatch serious gaming?
techfreshness well the 1070 might be a smart choice, but i wonder a 1000$ monitor at this monent? (should i wait a bit longer? since 144hz monitors coming out so faster as year goes on.)
I have a GTX 1080 and I'm looking for a new monitor, as of this second it's between the Acer x34 and the Asus 34" identical curved monitor. Exactly the same price, and I cannot find a proper side by side comparison anywhere, ugh.
***** Well I did end up going with the Acer Predator X34, and I cannot say enough good things about it. It has completely blown my expectations away. There are no problems with it in terms of dead pixels or overclocking it to the full 100Hz or anything like that. It is absolutely gorgeous. The only problem is it's price but honestly I'm so happy with it that I have no buyer's remorse whatsoever. Hope this helps you out man.
Just saw this post, the GTX 1070 is fine for 1080p, but 144 aka 2K or above resolution and for higher Hz, 120 Hz and above, the GTX 1080 is a wise choice. I game in 1440p and while my GTX 1080 is fine now ... after a year and certainly two years it'll be 'okay.' Personally I try to get a couple years out of a GPU and 4-5 out of a good PC.
+whotookmymojo yep, i was able to maintain 100hz with bf4 on ultra (exact same settings i used on the asus that maintained 144+). GTA5 was different but i didn't play around with the settings too much. so yes, i would say more than adequate, but depending on the game you won't be able to max out everything always.
Thanks for making this video! I'm doing a new build soon, and I will be going with either one or two 980 ti's, not sure yet. I guess it depends which screen. I'm torn on both of the exact monitors above, though don't know what to get. As of now I just game on a 1080p 60hz TV. So it'll be a big upgrade. My main concerns with the ultrawide is lower refresh rate and lower frames. While the PG279Q has higher refresh, higher frames, but not ultrawide obviously. How big of a difference does 100hz to 144/165hz make? Would love to hear your opinion on all of this!
The perception of framerate concept you mention at the end depends on how your eyes move. If you track a word across the screen at 120hz+, especially with ULMB, it will appear crisp and solid even at 2000-4000 pixels per second. But how can that be? 120 frames per 2000+ pixels, the object is jumping large gaps of 17-35 pixels per frame, so why don't you see it disappear as you follow it across? I can't explain the science behind it, but basically the human eye has a certain level of persistence, and when you work with such small absences/changes of light like that, it's back again before that persistence has worn off. It's why ULMB displays can display light for less time than they display pure black, but the user sees no flicker at all because it's happening 120 times a second. However, take the exact same moving image, and focus at one spot on the display or your finger out in-front of it. Persistence is no longer a factor, and you can see the individual frames of animation as the object goes across your vision. If you think about how you game, If you stare at the crosshair, the vast majority of the rest of the image isn't in focus, nor is it being tracked, so the lower the framerate, the more all of the image in your peripheral vision chops up and you see multiple instanced of objects like when you shake your mouse cursor around quickly; that's were high framerates make the most difference in fluidity and presence. And concerning objects at those fast speeds of 2000-3000+ pixels per second, which can be comfortably tracked by most people, the gaps in motion when not tracked only really feel like they've gone away at ~800-1000Hz, and would fully/truly when Hz = pixel speed. The lazy solution is motion blur which fakes the concept of complete existence of an image in motion by filling gaps with interpolated data, but that means the object can't be clear/solid when tracked. Because of all that, there is a perceivable difference up till Hz = speed in pixels per second, maybe not in a general average gaming scenario, but definitely if you make a point to look. That said the size of the image in your vision can change that allowing for less than perfect motion to appear perfect, which is exactly why essentially anything on a display seems smoother if you make it smaller on the screen, or get up and walk backwards. The inherent display motion blur you get with all non-OLED/ULMB displays, works to hide the gaps as well, but ruins sharpness in motion as in-game motion blur does. 1000Hz+ is the dream, and I'm sure it will exist and have practical uses at some point, but for actual gaming, I think the "I don't notice/care anymore" point will probably be 200-400hz, and we already have an announced display that hits the bottom end of that.
+MangoTangoFox interesting points. i wonder how that persistence affects gameplay, like your eyes/mind may interpret it being smooth but where really is the image if you try to line up your mouse to it? i suppose in the end it comes down to perceivable differences. i gotta try ulmb at 120hz without gsync, i haven't tried it out on my monitor, someone was trying to tell me it was better just because things seemed sharper. its all just a balancing act i suppose, in the end we all just want the best experience to us. what is this display you speak of?
techfreshness Well Acer announced a 1080P 21:9 display that OCs from 144Hz to 200Hz, and there's another one as well that I don't recall. And remember when you try ULMB, do it at the desktop, or a game where you can push the full refreshrate constantly. The clarity emphasizes gaps in motion as well as inconsistencies. 60FPS on a 120hz ULMB panel basically forces the display to flash each frame twice in the same spot before jumping to the next, and it creates a really weird ghosting-ish issue, but in reality it's just the persistence of your eye remembering the first frame (because it was clearly flashed at you twice for ~ 1.5ms each) while the next is starting to be shown, so you get 2 copies that spread further the faster the movement speed. Standard display motion blur just blurs everything between the two frames, so you get the same "spread" distance between, but it's filled with blur instead of appearing blank. Luckily BF is so easy to run, you can probably maintain a solid 120 on most of the maps at your usual settings. That or really anything else from the last console gen is pretty good to test. Using Chrome as your browser, you can also view 60FPS UA-cam videos at 2X speed (via the gear button), and the a full crisp 120FPS video stream will come out. I've found quite a few things that look pretty mindblowing doing that.
Great Comparison -thanks! I'm really interested in the x34, but I don't want to upgrade my 970x until the summer. I don't know that it could push all those pixels around very well. Also, subbed.
+Brad McPeak preciate the sub brad. yeah the 970x would struggle to keep it up at 100hz on most games, but i think it would definitely be playable, you'd just have to tune your settings down, (but who wants to do that!)
Hello I'm glad you made this video, I haven't seen many comparing these two monitors; I have a question... I have the ROG Swift PG278Q (2015) and I love it, I got a perfect panel and its amazing, now, this monitor does have an enhanced TN panel but from what I've read the new ROG Swift PG279Q (2016) has an IPS panel, is it that much better then its predecessor? can you really notice the difference? I would live the hear what you think...im also interested on the new Asus wide ROG monitor that's coming out soon altho that's only 100Hz so idk how I feel about that...
+Christopher W. Hearne hey christopher, well i have the 278q as well (i did a review on the 279 if you wanna see a comparison) if you haven't noticed the off angles or darkness of the 278q panel bothering you then i would say it is definitely NOT worth upgrading to the 279. to me because of how my room is lit during the day and how i view my monitor when sitting low in my chari, it was a pretty large difference. as far as the asus 100hz it will pretty much be the same as this acer except for different body/housing. if you are happy with the 278q now, i see no real advantage for you
I'd be interested to know how on the 4k screen you managed 80fps in GTA V and yet on the 1440p screen you managed the same frame rate? Did you cap it? You should also distinguish between full screen programs and desktop use. One is dependent upon the frame rate and the hz being in sync as much as possible, where as the other only has to do with the 2d desktop rendering. When you set the hz to 144, the desktop feels way better than 60hz. However if you go into a game and are sitting on 68fps due to performance limits, yet have the monitor on 144hz, you will notice frame latency issues. This ma be alleviated some by the Gsync, but it's not perfect. You would be better off capping your hz to match your fps - so in this case 68fps/68hz. That will be smoother overall in games and full screen programs. The other thing you haven't mentioned is that driving 4k at 60fps is about the same as driving 1440p at 144fps. The difference between them being that even with Gsync in full swing, 96fps/96hz is going to be noticeably more possibly on the 1440p panel, as opposed to the 4k which will do less. You could even say that the extra hurtz between 60-100 on the 4k screen, is wasted because most people won't get to that frame rate any ways.
Yo whats up techfreshness. I think you did an excellent job reviewing both products without having any bias. I have some quick questions for you not really about the review but your equipment used to record this video. What type of camera do you use to record your UA-cam videos and do you use any special type of lighting for the video image quality. I'm fairly new to working with a video and would like to increase the quality of my UA-cam videos.
@techfreshness, thanks for this overview, I had to laugh a little, I just finished up a huge round of research on what I wanted to add to my setup next and came down to the 3 exact monitors mentioned in this review. I went down the street to my local Micro Center to find WOW both the Acer and Asus on display in the store. Thanks so much for the insights, ill take these into account for my purchase ... or I could just buy them both? No bad idea ...
Just added your 1337 upvote. Nice vid. Lucky I found it. I was deciding between these 2 monitors and stumbled upon this in a google search. I like the PG348 too but it's too pricey for being so similar to the x34. $150 more for essentially the same monitor is just dumb; I'd rather spend that $150 on a HOTAS set up.
Im going to upgrade to a gtx 1080 and I want to buy a really good monitor for get much better clips with sniper rifle in Battlefield, after watching your video I cant decide which one is better for competitive 21:9 or 16:9 I feel like 21:9 give you more vieuw for the cost of less zoom and when you want to see a enemy from far away without aim you get hard time spoting in the distance those campers and also hard time whatching the minimap you almost need to desviate your eyes and stop paying attencion at the midlle screen I got high sensitivity and accuracy and move a lot so I prefer more zoom fast minimap vieuw, Its like in 21:9 everything looks small and that is really bad for games like Battlefield or CSGO becose you miss more shots in 21:9 then 16:9 so please confir me if Im wrong or right. Asus for Battlefield or Csgo and the Acer for race or open world games ?
Great video! I'm thinking of purchasing the this Asus. If I use an XFX R9 380 will I be able to notice a big difference from my BenQ RL2460HT to the Asus?
well that's why you opt for a setup that gives you access to a keyboard tray. I type pretty fast on my keyboard and trust me it wouldnt shake that acer monitor at all. my keyboard tray is desgined to not shake the desk itself. So yeah it just sounds like a setup issue. not a monitor stand issue.
wow you played all the games i play, bf4, gtav and racing games. Thanks for the info, i think ill still hold out for a 144hz 34" curved monitor but i dont know how much longer i can last...im on a 32" 720p tv at the moment lol
+peanutsz well those are the best genres! ha. yeh i think we'll be waiting a couple years before we see any of those, and plus you'll need some serious horsepower before you could run 144 on that high of a rez, not to mention current display port versions can't support the bandwidth needed. so sounds like you may want to make the jump now at least to bridge that gap.
techfreshness true, i want to see the difference with my own eyes to make a decision, ive never actually seen any game run higher than 60hz yet so hopefully i get a nice surprise when i do. i think ill get the acer or something similar because the 21:9 will also help a lot outside of gaming. They are just so damn expensive, especially in Canada.
Great video! Fps is hacks at 21:9 haha. Did you get a chance to play around with these in a dual monitor setup? I'm wondering what that would be like to have one monitor at 21:9 and one at 16:9. I know bezels might not match (would probably drive me nuts lol) and the desk would probably have to be enormous, but something I'd like to test nonetheless.
thank you for the great revue, i got stuck between asus and acer for 2 days but the quality for price on the asus 27" is to much, i will be getting the 35" curved monitor in 2-3 years right now i feel like you pay 20% extra for the cool factor. so 27" G-synk 165hz is so much value.
What I really want to know is are the trade off's worth it? Smaller screen but higher refresh rate or bigger screen with lower refresh rate. I haven't experienced anything over 60fps and this is the deciding factor for me. Can you see a difference between 100hz and over 100hz?
+A Vong hey vong, i think you can tell in fps shooters for sure, but most other games, if you are coming from just 60hz the first time, 100 is pretty solid step up. sorry for the delayed response. if i wasn't a competitive fps'er i would choose the 34 inch 100hz, unfortunately i can farily easily tell the difference vs 144+. also the extra desktop usage you get from the 34 inches is dramatic and worth it.
techfreshness That's alright, at least you gave me a good answer. I wouldn't say I'm a competitive gamer, just a casual that plays online sometimes but I do like my fps games. Would 2 980Ti's be enough to get me 100fps in recent and newer AAA titles? I'd imagine the extra pixels might impact the performance.
yes 2 980ti's will be plenty, i have 1 and it does 144hz at 2440*1440 perfectly at ultra for bf4. 100hz at 3440*1440 is actually slightly less pixel info per second (if my math is right). but bf4 is obviously not the most graphically intensive and i dont' run any msaa. 2 980ti's should give you a good amount of headroom for 100fps on AAA titles
techfreshness Sweet got 1 at the moment. Going to wait and see how the Asus PG348Q release goes before I jump on the ultrawide bandwagon. Thanks for answering my questions!
I'm really starting to want one of those ultrawide 34" now. For me the refresh rate isn't a big deal as I don't really game much but the movies! Ah the movies look so good and all that desktop space without two monitors. It's tempting to look at the 1080p height ones as they are a lot cheaper but I think I'd regret it. 2560 width sounds great but 1080 height, not so great on a brand new monitor in 2016.
+Clay Mann yeh clay i hear ya. if you dont' game there is still very nice benefits from having high refresh rates for desktop use, as everything does feel smoother, animations, mouse cursor etc.. 100hz will be perfect for you and i totally agree don't go with 1080p. i would take a single 34 over 2 monitors for sure, (3 is a different story.)
I think that 27' is already enough, considering the IPS and 144hz with 165 OC and G-sync instead of the needed hardware for only 100hz and 3440-1440 and odd 21:9, although Curved is something I found very appealing for Racing sims.
techfreshness Hello! I am very hesitant of getting the X34 Predator due to the swamps of issues on the Official Forums... There seems to be a huge Monitor Lottery with that monitor, so it'd be nice to see an in-depth comparison of the X34 and the ASUS ROG Swift PG348Q. (Granted, they can give out 'perfect models' for people that make youtube content... Hm. Thank you for replying so quickly!
Indeed the X34 had quite a bit of issues at launch. However, if you have been in the market and have been looking at the predator it has been sold out everywhere. Exactly 3 weeks ago the second batch came out to fix things like coil whine, a little bit of ips blb and overclocking issues. If you're curious you're getting the newer batch, the box should have the monitor displaying a space game instead of the other picture. hope that makes the decision easier.
Dreamer I wonder which will be better, the X34 Predator or the PQ38 from Asus? I don't know when the Asus' releases, so only time will tell. I read its using a similar, if not the same panel, so I am worried that it may have the same issues the Predator had before. Question though: Would you buy the Predator now, or would you rather wait? Thank you.
+techfreshness You said you gonna exchange the Asus one because of backlight bleeding. You should check out the new acer monitor. www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-27-inch-Widescreen/dp/B0173PEX20/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1452820429&sr=8-1&keywords=acer+xb271hu it has better reviews than the asus one actually.
Hey techfreshness, back when you shot this video. What type of GPU did you have? I'm currently running a GTX 780 SC, 8 GB of Ram, 965 Phenom II X4 Black edition processor, Asus ROG Crosshair 4 Motherboard, H50 Water Cooler, 650 Corshair power supply, three 2TB hard drives (I want to get SSDs well at least a 1TB). I was just wondering what hardware you had and was you able to run BF4 at a decent framerate with G-Sync on a 1440p display.
+Gadget Man its hard to say just based on your room and lighting conditions, but definitely only put the OD on normal, brightness, contrast and temp all up to your tastes
well i like my birghtness and contrast up to the point where it doesn't look washed out. try starting with this windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/calibrate-your-display
Hey buddy, great video. Got a dilemma you might be able to help me with, in need of buying a new monitor/GPU's. Cant decide if to go for a gtx 980 ti sli with a 4k ips monitor ( which r very expensive with high response time), or a single gtx 980 ti with a 2560x1440 monitor like the asus pg279q.. Is there a big difference between the 4k and 2k resolutions? Or the high refresh rate of the asus tops the exprience of playing in 4k?
+Gadget Man hey gadget man, this is actually an easy decision to me. a single 980ti with the 279q is the way to go imo. there is difference between 4k and 2k for sure, at desktop distances this is pretty apparent in day to day desktop usage, especially with text and just overall sharpness. however when going into gaming you will notice this much less and any extra sharpness you may experience is far outweighed by the benefit of increased fps, imo. games look pretty dang good as it is at 1440. plus by going with the single card and 144hz monitor with the money you save now, you will have a good upgrade path down the line where you can add an additional ti and pick up one of the 4k 120hz plus monitors that should be here in i'd say around 2-3 years (by the time they are any good). also, what games do you typically prefer? and what are you coming from?
+techfreshness thanks for the quick response! I usually play shooters, RPG's, diablo 3, just cause 3, BF4, witcher 3 etc... I had a Dell 27 inch 2560x1440, sold it for trying the imac 5k, after realising im still a gamer i decided to sell the imac and get a new 4k monitor and an upgrade for my 780 sli... After reading a lot, i saw that a cheap TN 4k panel isnt worth the price (especially because of the horrible colors), i debated on rather to pay 2000 dollars for a 4k dell ips monitor, or go for the samsung s342790c which is a 21:9 3440x1440 display.. And then i saw the asus 279q, but it is 27 inch... I dont have an option of getting the acer because they dont sell in israel.. So its either an expensive 4k dell for 2k dollars, or a 1,300 dollars 21:9 34 inch wide samsung with 60hz, or the asus 279q... I just dont want to be disappointed from going back to a 2560x1440 screen with just a brand new video card... Unless u tell me there is a huge difference between one with and without
ah man, honestly, since you are mainly an rpg fan, you'd probably be happier with the immersion and experience factor of a 34" widescreen. but i would wait until you can get one that does at least 100hz. so if the predator is not available just wait (since more are getting released), i would definitely not by any 34" or 4k monitor that is only able to do 60hz. because to me 27" 1440p 144hz > ANY 60hz monitor, reglardless of screen size or resolution. you will be most happy for the games you play with a panel similar to the acer, i would recommend holding off a couple months if you can
keep the level of volume the same when you speak :) you keep talking louder at first then you dip down to maybe a whisper all the timeThanks for the videos!
It is a way of speaking / presenting, trying to keep the attention of the viewers by changing volume, sounding less monotonous and emphasizing particular parts. But yeah, it also bothered me a bit and would rather be spoken to as if I don't have an attention disorder.
+techfreshness hey bro im building a new gaming pc it has gtx 980ti i7 6700k what screen will be better I like monitors with beautiful display that has great colour and I play games like gta 5 bo3 sims 4 and if you have any suggestions pls let me now
+techfreshness hey bro im building a new gaming pc it has gtx 980ti i7 6700k what screen will be better I like monitors with beautiful display that has great colour and I play games like gta 5 bo3 sims 4 and if you have any suggestions pls let me now
+techfreshness ok thx man how is the experience on the acer and this is my first ever pc my specs are gpu asus strix gtx 980ti cpu i7 6700k motherboard msi h170 a gaming m3 cpu cooler corsair h100i case h440 black red psu 750 w evga hdd wd black 4tb ssd samsung 500gb ram g skill 16gb 3200mhz headset logitech g633 keyboard razor deathstalker mise razor deathadder im getting in to pc gaming and I was stuck between these 2 monitors thx for making a video like this and the good news is I can get any pc monitor for cheaper I watched your vid like 5 times to make up my mind but I cant thx for the info
So I just built my first pc. I5 6600k cpu Gigabyte GeForce G1 Gtx 1070 2x Ripjaw 8gig RAM MOBO MSI z170a m5 I just want to know if one of these two monitors will be a good pair for my setup. From what I"ve heard BF1 at 1440p and 144hz, ultra settings will probably run at around 45 to 55 fps. I'm wondering will dropping the settings from Ultra to High give me another like 10 fps? Will gsync help out my fps dips and make it much smoother? Or does gsync only really eliminate screen tearing? Will gaming like this burn out my gpu fast?... How about overclocking, will that boost fps, at the same time does that shorten the life span of my gpu? To be honest BF1 is more than likely the only FPS game I will be looking into, I'm mostly a solo/rpg open world kind of gamer. So at the moment I'm playing diablo 3 and getting some screen tearing. In the game menu I enabled vertical something that seemed to help out a good amount but I do still get a bit of screen tearing. I'm thinking it is because my hdtv is just old lol. Also it can only use hdmi so I'm capped at 60 fps. I'd love to be able to get above that 60 fps threshold because seeing dips down to 37 fps is annoying as hell. Yes, if you couldn't tell already, I am new to pc gaming.
hey player1! whew that was a lot of questions. i will try to answer. either of these 2 monitors would be fantastic for your setup. if you play bf1 (which i play almost exclusively) the 279q would be my choice. you got a solid computer there for sure, i would recommend running on the default medium settings. that should give you a consistent 120+ fps, which you want for fps games. do you play many other types? the benefit of more frames far outweights any incremental gains you get from putting settings on ultra or high. gsync eliminates tearing and also makes the time between frames more even, if you are interested in technical details you can read all about it here: www.anandtech.com/show/7582/nvidia-gsync-review gaming will not burn out your gpa, never worry about overworking your computer. yes heat can make the life cycle of the components shorter, but really tough to do if you have everything stock and decent cooling. overclocking can boost fps to the extent that your game is getting bottlenecked by your cpu, i'd suggest playing around with it, but try everything stock first, and games at their lower settings and work your way up. i would really only overclock with whatever default 'oc' button you might see in your bios, beyond that i never mess with it (it honestly starts confusing me with multipliers and its not worth the trouble imo). also, to tell what impacts your gaming the most you just need to get started and play at certain settings for awhile, then start tweaking to see if you notice differences. i would also recommend downloading fraps (a free frame rate counter), you can then run that while you play, screen record with nvidias shadow play then when you replay you will see what average fps you are getting, because when you are playing its hard to keep an eye on the fps counter when you are trying to play! i just read the second part of your comment ha. if you play mostly open world stuff i would get the x34, the widescreen will be more immersive and i don't think you'll have an issue getting a solid 60fps all the way up to 100 depending on your settings, like i say you just have to experiment. welcome to the world of pc gaming though! if you can stomach some of the pains its well worth it, and getting everything working right is kind of part of the fun! ha
techfreshness Thank you so much. Looks like Im going to be saving up for a month or two but it sounds like it will be worth it! I just hope the quality of those monitors is much better now. I have read horror story after horror story about bad blacklight bleeding ect. Thanks for the info and thanks for the welcoming.
Nice review. However, big difference in price of $500 between PG279Q ($800) and X34 ($1,300). The single advantage that the Acer has is the width or extra view-ability. Due to its width/ length the support "stand" was not as sturdy which wabble or shaked as you've shown. Back light leakage at times is common with many makes and models. For people who have the extra cash I believe would purchase the X34. Otherwise, if you have another $800 (total of $1600) to spend just might buy two PG279Q's over having one X34 at $1300. My preference would be to purchase two fabulous PG279Q's !!!
One of the few people who actually said "i chose this one". Some people said that ultra wide screen aren't good for First person shooters but here is definitely a big difference. But on moba games like league of legends you can't really play in that big resolution. i just bought recently a 24 inch monitor and is kinda hard for me to play in full screen, because i've been playing on a 15 inch laptop display.
+Alinutz Alin say that you can't play cause you're not used to the high resolution cause you're used on your 15 inch laptop resolution, and not cause the resolution is high for mobas. i play LoL just fine on my 27 inch monitor
well i would suggest going with the 279q, i thought you were saying there was a widescreen that could do 144hz, which there is none i know of at the moment
u cant compare an ultrawide to a 16:9 monitor, each has pros and cones. if u wanna choose between an ultra wide to a 16:9 it depends what your r doing with the monitor :) soory for my bad english
So I'm not too informed on monitors and TVs but I've been looking for something to replace my RCA 34 in TV and I was wondering if there was any pros or cons to getting a large monitor vs a new TV
+Simon Garcia hey simon, i would say one big con is the price, monitors are much more expensive than equivalent sized tv's if you are just going to use it as a tv then just get a tv, you can get much more for your money.
I am new to pc gaming, i built a skylake I5 build, with a gtx 980 non TI, I am new to monitors as well, well the tech behind them like hz and refresh rates but my gtx 980 not really a 4k card can the monitor acer 4k be turned down to maybe 2k or 1080p i also would want the 4k monitor for my movies as well so its a 2 in one really my movies and my games
+james myers If money is not a issue get this one, www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-UltraWide-Widescreen-X34/dp/B016GNX4SE/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1452737524&sr=1-1&keywords=acer+x34&linkCode=sl1&tag=tfresh-20&linkId=7c3e6a060f99d96a6a5ba3cb331c8212
I am really tempted to get the ultra wide 100hz but I feel i should wait until there is a 3440x1440 144hz or even 165hz monitor. That alongside a Pascal GPU and i am set for many years to come.
+Aldion Sylkaj yep, but you will likely be waiting a couple years for a monitor with those specs. current display port can't support that bandwidth, and nobody is making those types of panels yet to put into monitors. if you can wait though definitely. i plan on just selling mine and upgrading at that time, what are you gamign on now?
techfreshness well my current pc is a potato xD and i am waiting until Pascal comes out since i wanted to buy the new 900 gpus but i to behonest did not see much difference from 700. I got a 660ti as of right now, and it is still rocking strong. and a Q6600 with 4gb ram. Still strong, ish... So my next upgrade will be big. i might just go with the ultra wide 1440p even though it is 100hz.
what do u think of the AOC G2460PQU for a double or triple monitor setup? im looking for a gaming monitor and was wondering if theres anything you would reccomend?
yeh all the great ones are gonna be pricey. you can go cheaper but you don't get gsync/freesync ability. this is a good one: amzn.to/1S3RY69 you can go even cheaper if you go down to 1080p but i wouldn't recommend
+Nic Selby hey nic, in my experience, the ti was enough for both monitors. it does depend on the game though, but you can run pretty much most games on at least high no problem (sans AA). there is actually slightly less pixels per second to push on the x34, but i'm not sure if that is the correct way to calculate it ha.
+techfreshness thanks for the reply. I'm still going to wait for Asus version of ultra wide and decide after. Hard decision haha! Gonna subscribe tho man, very good video!!
+techfreshness I'm too impatient and ordered Asus pg279q haha. I like the extra frames like you do and I think that ultra wide will be much better in a couple years when I next upgrade
+Wellbuggerme Probably not on ultra, i got the pg279q & 980 ti strix and it's struggling in some games @ 1440p on ultra settings. If you're after high fps go sli
+Fleshmeister fleshmesiter is correct. i found 2440x1440 at 144 to be as about demanding as 3440x1440 at 100hz. of course it all depends on your games and settings. but at full ultra, will be tough sometimes
I am tied between the 2. I think it comes down to just how much difference 100hz - 165hz is. Im both a hardcore online FPS gamer and a RTS offline player so i dont know. 60hz is just unacceptable but is 100hz good enough? who knows
techfreshness yep coming from 60fps. Just bought this new PC www.wired2fire.co.uk/gaming-pc/diablo-extreme-pro-workstation-gamer.html and now need to pick monitor
wow man serious rig!~nice.......if you play mostly fps and then just rts offline i would think the 165 is gonna be better imo, at least thats what i would pick
techfreshness thanks for the reply, i think im leaning towards the 165hz. How significantly would i have to lower the settings on say, something like overwatch/battlefield 1, to get 165hz on my rig?
+Alan Crome thanks a lot alan, i know man i have lots of issues actually. ha. i'm fairly limited in my space, but i definitely could use a new mic, thats the white noise you referring to?
+techfreshness Thanks. I went and bought one yesterday. It seems ok. Bit of backlight bleed in the left corners. There is more lag than my old TN panel, but its difficult to tell if thats an issue with the screen (which TFT tested as having a fair bit more than something like the XB270HU, but still not a lot), or just the reduced FPS I get with the extra pixels to fill. Either way, you helped me make an informed purchase decision, so thanks :)
awesome, wow yeh i'm impressed if you can detect that lag. i'm usually pretty sensitive and consider myself a pretty solid fps player. compared to the 270 yeh its a few ms more for sure. anyways, glad to have helped! btw, you got the 279q?
Please help me pick one!! Im thinking about the ASUS PG279Q Or the widescreen one is better??? I heard about the curved screen is not good!!?/ HELP D:!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it just depends how sensitive you are to fps, if you are a pretty competitive player id go with asus. otherwise i think youd be happy with the acer, what monitor are you coming from?
I am torn. I had the PG279Q since it came out, but now sitting here with both that AND a PG348Q. One has obivously to go! :P While I love the extra width, and 100Hz feels acceptable for most games, then there's this: In Battlefield it almost got me distracted more then feeling immersive. As in loosing focus from your Crosshair to the edge of the screen and die. But what buggers me the most is the color and gamma. Somehow the PG279Q feels better. But compared to an DELL monitor that I use as 2nd monitor it gets very obvious that the PG348Q got a worse picture. The gamma cannot be adjusted and gives me washed out colors in games that does not have gamma adjustment. And the colors seems abit off compared to the DELL. Both calibrated and even with calibration it only helps in desktop since most games ignore ICC profiles or desktop gamma. I seem to be the only one who complains on this though :P But I am leaning towards returning the PG348Q and wait for future 21:9 screens with better panels. I head the Acer X34 got gamma adjustment though.
+techfreshness awesome video's man, subscribed. Got a 980 now, but I want to get the asus PG348Q when it comes out, you recon to get a 980ti or even sli now or wait for the pascal series which might take up to Q3 for consumers of what I have heard
sli 980's are gonna be more powerful but it comes with the drawbacks of running sli. i'm not sure how long the 348q is going to take to come out but i would try to use it playing with what you have first, if you are unhappy then add another 980. that should hold you over til pascal, at which time you could sell both 980's. it depends how demanding your games are but i have a hunch you play all kinds of games?
+techfreshness +techfreshness I always have been avoiding SLi wherever I could because I really don't like having any SLi problems.. I play FPS/shooters the most. (BH4, BF:HL, Just cause 3, GTA V, ARMA3, Rainbow Six Siege.. and so on) I'm a real sucker for looks(all maxed out), but low framerate is also unbearable so I tend to have an expensive taste what that matters :/ I'm doing 1080p on a 980 at the moment but this puppy won't do any good on 3440 from what I have seen.. So if I understand correctly you would skip the 980ti for I have a 980 already and maybe add one 980 but go for the pascal cards later on?
yep, i avoid sli when possible as well, just adds another variable to go wrong! but yes,if i were you i would add the 980 and then go for pascal later.
Hey, just came across your channel. Great vid! Really enjoyed it. I figure since you're a small channel I could maybe critique a bit? I'm no professional, and it's absolutely nothing personal, just wanted to give a recommendation. When you're speaking in front of the camera it kind of felt like there wasn't much emotion kind of just like a death stare of sorts. Also, not that the B-roll is bad (it's pretty good) I just thought if you wanted to improve on it a bit you could check out the channel HardwareCanucks. They do some of the best B-Roll I have ever seen and it feels like absolute sex. Again, just giving my opinions as a viewer and nothing more. Great channel you got going on here, (I subbed) and keep up the good work!
+David Jorquera thanks for the input david. i absolutely agree with you, trying to get better all the time. my b roll issue is 2 fold, weird lighting in my condo and only a decent camera with just the kit lens. hopefully when i move i will up my game with a dedicated studio. but will try to keep getting better all around, thanks for subbing!
Got my PG279q and I love it! It's the clear choice for competitive gamers. Truly amazing. I won't be going back to 1080p ever again.
Ram Bam Why not Acer Xb271HU because of better QC?
I've got no issues with mine and many say the finish on the Asus is better. I don't like the Acer's red stand
Ram Bam But there has to be some amount of ips glow so do you notice it on dark scenes while playing games and watching dark movies?
I actually don't have any noticeable IPS glow. These panels have been out for over a year now and I either lucked out or the QC is better now. I've seen the horrific pictures though. I just took a leap of faith knowing Amazon's return policy. Can't go wrong with either though I'm sure.
Your videos should get a lot more support. You make great videos! I will share this with all of my friends.
+Barros Graphics appreciate that very much barros
+Barros Graphics Dribbling on, blaming the monitor shake when his desk is unstable. Fuckin amateur. Plus the acer has a glossy background. There needs to be a button that's the opposite of subscribe. Can you block channels?
ha. well the monitor shakes even on the floor, trust, its wobbly.
Running games at less than 60fps for most high-end PC gamers is almost unacceptable, and as such I believe the following should have been added to your conclusion:
- Get the X34 if you; a) Have a mighty graphics card, and b) Dont mind sacrificing graphical quality for the widescreen experience.
I for one will probably trade my monitor in for something like the X34 next year; when Nvidia's Pascal GPU is proven, the price of these monitors has dropped and more games support 21:9.
You forgot C) Better build quality and reliability.
Matte plastic does not mean better built quality!
I'd love to try the Witcher 3 on the Acer.
+good afternoon there is a video of it on youtube.. looks epic
+Lane JeanOoohhh I want to buy the gaming monitor with the best price and prestige!!! Pleeaze pick me
At 6:33 could you see the backlight bleeding? Thats what im scared of if i buy this monitor...being annoyed each darker scene when i play games.
it is pretty common for IPS displays, you could get lucky and win the ips lottery much like how you win the silicone lottery with cpus.
It is logical though, if you think about it, most dark scenes feauture an object somewhere that makes the pixels produce colors and since the brightness of the pixels is higher than that of the BLB the BLB gets
"drowned out"
Most countries you can return items you have bought if you are not satisfied.
Great unbiased review. Explained everything that needed to be said.
2nd that. Thanks for the video.
+techfreshness going to be trying an Acer Z35 soon? its a 35 inch curved monitor that can overclock to 200 htz.
probably not until i build a racing rig. 1080p is just too low, but i am curious how it looks during gameplay
i wonder what 200 htz looks like. im thinking the new pascal card should be able to handle this.
yeh me too, although you wouldn't even need pascal to run 200hz at only 1080p
ASUS VE248Q 24" Full HD only $169.99, you Save $60 (26%)>>www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005BZNDHQ/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B005BZNDHQ&linkCode=as2&tag=httpwwwechipk-20&linkId=d33a7b3df28ed7536ace4ed90d104500
get asus swift pg278q it has 1 ms 144 Hz 27" G-Sync and 2560x1440
You can wait a loooong time for 21:9 with 144hz^^ Because the Bandwith of Displayport 1.2b limits the fps to 100h on 3440x1440p. so yeah... wait a few years for DP 1.3 to be widely available
Great comparison videos. Nice channel man
Just the comparison i was looking for, great video :-)
ok can the back stand be changed with a lg 34UC8 stand by opening the joint point as the stock stand sucks!!!!!!!!
i seem the x34 in person at Pax Boston and it's one of the most gorgeous-looking monitor as I've ever seen
Great reviews, mate.
Well done.
+seasixfour thanks so much, very kind of you
Thanks dude for making this video ! Very helpful . Take my like
appreciated sir
I wonder if eventually we can get a 3440x1440 120/144Hz G-Sync Panel. Why compromise when you can have both? Though it would take a monster PC to run, it would be interesting to see.
that's a long ways ahead, 165hz on 2k is a breakthrough right now.
really trying to build a new pc but only need 2 parts upgrade. GPU and monitor. rightnow running sli 66ti and a DELL normal monitor.... should i get a pg279q and 1070 as next goal for overwatch serious gaming?
absolutely. those would be a great pair and give you the best bang for your buck upgrade in gaming experience.
techfreshness well the 1070 might be a smart choice, but i wonder a 1000$ monitor at this monent?
Thanks for the comparison, exactly what I was looking at - whether to buy a ultrawide or higher hz. Subbed and I think I will go with the Asus!
good choice man, glad i could help
Hi do you think one gtx980ti is adequate to get fair fps on a 34 inch?
+whotookmymojo I also want to know this -.-
+whotookmymojo yep, i was able to maintain 100hz with bf4 on ultra (exact same settings i used on the asus that maintained 144+). GTA5 was different but i didn't play around with the settings too much. so yes, i would say more than adequate, but depending on the game you won't be able to max out everything always.
thanks for the feedback...;)
You made no real mention of gsync, which both monitors have..
+MangoTangoFox Acer z35 native 144Hz ~ 200Hz with overclock. As Acer X34 demonstrated, sadly not every single panel will reach the overclock speed.
+techfreshness Thanks man - reckon I'll wait.
ive actually heard alot of bad reviews about the pg279q having terrible light bleeding? i was considering this monitor but not so much now
So why not get the Predator Z35?
I went with the pg279q as i got it for gaming. The higher hz and better response time sold me
Thanks for the video!
Could you tell us the pg279q settings(color etc) you have had during the comparison in this video ? Was it the default ones ?
+Dan Downing ha nice. yeah microcenter is pretty cool. what are you adding to? just looking to upgrade a single monitor?
Very nice review! Thx
Just added your 1337 upvote. Nice vid. Lucky I found it. I was deciding between these 2 monitors and stumbled upon this in a google search. I like the PG348 too but it's too pricey for being so similar to the x34. $150 more for essentially the same monitor is just dumb; I'd rather spend that $150 on a HOTAS set up.
great review man. def subbed
+Moamer Z you rock, thx!
may I ask, the actual dimension of the asus pg279q - its height when extended and retracted.Thank you.
+TheTechGod hey tg, i believe you would yes, because of so much more added resolution and screen size.
+techfreshness thanks so much!
What did you do with your X34 monitor now that you're sticking to the Pg279Q?
this ultrawide monitor of 34 inches in 16: 9 is equal to one of 25, 27 or more inches, when watching videos at 16: 9? sorry for my English
Great video!!! I've chosen the Asus myself seeing that I play FPSers.
well that's why you opt for a setup that gives you access to a keyboard tray.
+ocorir hey man, no i definitely did not, my desk is way too small, that acer is humongous! ha the unmatched bezels would drive me nuts too
thank you for the great revue, i got stuck between asus and acer for 2 days but the quality for price on the asus 27" is to much, i will be getting the 35" curved monitor in 2-3 years right now i feel like you pay 20% extra for the cool factor. so 27" G-synk 165hz is so much value.
you should also do a performance video comparison for more performance oriented monitors such as the benq 2430t and the asus VG248Q
+Matthew Schanzlin 2430T Rocks :P
Great review
What I really want to know is are the trade off's worth it? Smaller screen but higher refresh rate or bigger screen with lower refresh rate. I haven't experienced anything over 60fps and this is the deciding factor for me. Can you see a difference between 100hz and over 100hz?
+A Vong
yes
+A Vong hey vong, i think you can tell in fps shooters for sure, but most other games, if you are coming from just 60hz the first time, 100 is pretty solid step up. sorry for the delayed response. if i wasn't a competitive fps'er i would choose the 34 inch 100hz, unfortunately i can farily easily tell the difference vs 144+. also the extra desktop usage you get from the 34 inches is dramatic and worth it.
techfreshness
That's alright, at least you gave me a good answer.
2 980ti's should give you a good amount of headroom for 100fps on AAA titles
techfreshness
Sweet got 1 at the moment. Going to wait and see how the Asus PG348Q release goes before I jump on the ultrawide bandwagon. Thanks for answering my questions!
Is this guy reading a script? There's no emotion, like a robot.
HEY! Synths are people too!
Would the acer be good for 4K gaming. Thinking of getting a 1080ti plz help me with this cause it looks like a really good monitor
Omg you look so enthusiastic in your videos
+Mvttyy So what, that's his style. He was very professional.
+brian boucher haha, yeh. perhaps i'll try to remember to crack a smile once in awhile
Great video. Thanks.
+MrHoojaszczyk thank YOU
I think that 27' is already enough, considering the IPS and 144hz with 165 OC and G-sync instead of the needed hardware for only 100hz and 3440-1440 and odd 21:9, although Curved is something I found very appealing for Racing sims.
Will you do a comparing video of the X34 Predator and the ASUS ROG Swift PG348Q?
+Tabula Rasa hey tabula, probably not unless there is a big difference besides aesthetics.
techfreshness Hello! Hm.
Thank you for replying so quickly!
hello! yep, although mine was bought off the shelf
Thank you.
nice vids bro love your desk set up where did u get your desk
+ashgidds hey ash, the desk is just from ikea, i believe its the galant series
+techfreshness You said you gonna exchange the Asus one because of backlight bleeding. You should check out the new acer monitor.

it has better reviews than the asus one actually.
thanks fahad, i reviewed that monitor previously actually, its a great screen. but i'm keeping my 278q for now.....
techfreshness I think you did the old one which is XB270HU and the new one that I sent it to you is XB271HU
oh! you are right, thanks man i wasn't even aware of that monitor, it looks good.....
Hey buddy, can you post ur recommended calibration for the asus pg279q?
+Gadget Man its hard to say just based on your room and lighting conditions, but definitely only put the OD on normal, brightness, contrast and temp all up to your tastes
+techfreshness room is usually dark.. But cant seem to find the right setting for it.. Don't really have the touch for it
well i like my birghtness and contrast up to the point where it doesn't look washed out. try starting with this windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/calibrate-your-display
does league of legends get black bars on the ultrawide?
Unless u tell me there is a huge difference between one with and without
+Gadget Man samsung S34E790C
+Gadget Man Buttom line, which do u think adds better to the overall gaming experience, 4k or 2k with 144hz ? :)
ah man, honestly, since you are mainly an rpg fan, you'd probably be happier with the immersion and experience factor of a 34" widescreen. but i would wait until you can get one that does at least 100hz. so if the predator is not available just wait (since more are getting released), i would definitely not by any 34" or 4k monitor that is only able to do 60hz. because to me 27" 1440p 144hz > ANY 60hz monitor, reglardless of screen size or resolution. you will be most happy for the games you play with a panel similar to the acer, i would recommend holding off a couple months if you can
Did yours have dead pixels too? Got mine yesterday with a nice big cluster in the center
well damn! back luck mate, both these were perfect for me
what gpu where you using on the bigger screen? did you have gta 5 on max everything?
keep the level of volume the same when you speak :) you keep talking louder at first then you dip down to maybe a whisper all the timeThanks for the videos!
It is a way of speaking / presenting, trying to keep the attention of the viewers by changing volume, sounding less monotonous and emphasizing particular parts. But yeah, it also bothered me a bit and would rather be spoken to as if I don't have an attention disorder.
Hey there, any plans to test the 34" Asus PG348Q NVIDIA G-Sync, 100Hz Curved IPS Panel? Great video.
+GodsWarHammer thanks alot. honestly probably not unless it offers something over the acer (pretty sure they will use the same panel)
+techfreshness hey bro im building a new gaming pc it has gtx 980ti i7 6700k what screen will be better I like monitors with beautiful display that has great colour and I play games like gta 5 bo3 sims 4 and if you have any suggestions pls let me now
+techfreshness hey bro im building a new gaming pc it has gtx 980ti i7 6700k what screen will be better I like monitors with beautiful display that has great colour and I play games like gta 5 bo3 sims 4 and if you have any suggestions pls let me now
hey crazy, i would go with the acer in your case, and very nice build! the widescreen is so nice to have for those type of games.
+techfreshness ok thx man how is the experience on the acer and this is my first ever pc my specs are
gpu asus strix gtx 980ti
cpu i7 6700k
motherboard msi h170 a gaming m3
cpu cooler corsair h100i
case h440 black red
psu 750 w evga
hdd wd black 4tb
ssd samsung 500gb
ram g skill 16gb 3200mhz
headset logitech g633
keyboard razor deathstalker
mise razor deathadder
im getting in to pc gaming and I was stuck between these 2 monitors thx for making a video like this and the good news is I can get any pc monitor for cheaper I watched your vid like 5 times to make up my mind but I cant thx for the info
Is the backlight bleed still a problem on the Asus?
No
So I just built my first pc.
I5 6600k cpu
Gigabyte GeForce G1 Gtx 1070
2x Ripjaw 8gig RAM
MOBO MSI z170a m5
I just want to know if one of these two monitors will be a good pair for my setup.
Yes, if you couldn't tell already, I am new to pc gaming.
hey player1! whew that was a lot of questions. i will try to answer. either of these 2 monitors would be fantastic for your setup. if you play bf1 (which i play almost exclusively) the 279q would be my choice. you got a solid computer there for sure, i would recommend running on the default medium settings. that should give you a consistent 120+ fps, which you want for fps games. do you play many other types? the benefit of more frames far outweights any incremental gains you get from putting settings on ultra or high. gsync eliminates tearing and also makes the time between frames more even, if you are interested in technical details you can read all about it here: www.anandtech.com/show/7582/nvidia-gsync-review
gaming will not burn out your gpa, never worry about overworking your computer. yes heat can make the life cycle of the components shorter, but really tough to do if you have everything stock and decent cooling. overclocking can boost fps to the extent that your game is getting bottlenecked by your cpu, i'd suggest playing around with it, but try everything stock first, and games at their lower settings and work your way up. i would really only overclock with whatever default 'oc' button you might see in your bios, beyond that i never mess with it (it honestly starts confusing me with multipliers and its not worth the trouble imo).
also, to tell what impacts your gaming the most you just need to get started and play at certain settings for awhile, then start tweaking to see if you notice differences. i would also recommend downloading fraps (a free frame rate counter), you can then run that while you play, screen record with nvidias shadow play then when you replay you will see what average fps you are getting, because when you are playing its hard to keep an eye on the fps counter when you are trying to play!
i just read the second part of your comment ha. if you play mostly open world stuff i would get the x34, the widescreen will be more immersive and i don't think you'll have an issue getting a solid 60fps all the way up to 100 depending on your settings, like i say you just have to experiment.
welcome to the world of pc gaming though! if you can stomach some of the pains its well worth it, and getting everything working right is kind of part of the fun! ha
techfreshness Thank you so much.
My preference would be to purchase two fabulous PG279Q's !!!
mg279q and pb279q is my setup. cost me less than an x34 would.
Is the asus ROG swift better than the original Acer Predator? (the 27inch ips 144hz 1440p gsync version)
+Hijynx87 the 279q is better than the hb270hu or whatever that original model name was yeah
True, i'm not used on it yet
I am thinking about getting a, Zotac GTX 1080 Amp Extreme and the PG279Q. Is this a good move? OR should I get an Ultrawide with 1440p 144hz w/G-Sync.
hmm, what ultrawide are you referring to?
techfreshness well there is the one you were referring to but maybe you have some other suggestions?
well i would suggest going with the 279q, i thought you were saying there was a widescreen that could do 144hz, which there is none i know of at the moment
u cant compare an ultrawide to a 16:9 monitor, each has pros and cones.
if u wanna choose between an ultra wide to a 16:9 it depends what your r doing with the monitor :) soory for my bad english
should I get the BenQ x3501 or Acer xr341ck
So I'm not too informed on monitors and TVs but I've been looking for something to replace my RCA 34 in TV and I was wondering if there was any pros or cons to getting a large monitor vs a new TV
+Simon Garcia hey simon, i would say one big con is the price, monitors are much more expensive than equivalent sized tv's if you are just going to use it as a tv then just get a tv, you can get much more for your money.
+techfreshness yeah that was one thing I was thinking about but i play more games than watch TV
but you play games with that tv using a console or pc?
techfreshness both Xbox one for battlefield and pc for fallout nv
hmm, yeh then in that case if you have them both hooked up to a monitor it might work better for ya
+james myers If money is not a issue get this one,
www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-UltraWide-Widescreen-X34/dp/B016GNX4SE/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1452737524&sr=1-1&keywords=acer+x34&linkCode=sl1&tag=tfresh-20&linkId=7c3e6a060f99d96a6a5ba3cb331c8212
I am really tempted to get the ultra wide 100hz but I feel i should wait until there is a 3440x1440 144hz or even 165hz monitor. That alongside a Pascal GPU and i am set for many years to come.
+Aldion Sylkaj yep, but you will likely be waiting a couple years for a monitor with those specs. current display port can't support that bandwidth, and nobody is making those types of panels yet to put into monitors. if you can wait though definitely. i plan on just selling mine and upgrading at that time, what are you gamign on now?
techfreshness
well my current pc is a potato xD and i am waiting until Pascal comes out since i wanted to buy the new 900 gpus but i to behonest did not see much difference from 700. I got a 660ti as of right now, and it is still rocking strong. and a Q6600 with 4gb ram. Still strong, ish... So my next upgrade will be big.
i might just go with the ultra wide 1440p even though it is 100hz.
yeh i think it would be a huge upgrade for you then you would love it with an all new system too, sounds like you know how to buy
what do u think of the AOC G2460PQU for a double or triple monitor setup? im looking for a gaming monitor and was wondering if theres anything you would reccomend?
+lcsat93 hi lcsat, i wouldn't get anything that can't do at least 100hz
+techfreshness i guess if im using it to hook up my xbox one that might not be very useful though? its always good to have more options though.
that is correct, you would hook the xbox one up through the hdmi port (60hz), and your pc through the display port which can do the 165, very useful!
+techfreshness thanks, hate to be a pest, but is there any 144hz monitor you would reccoment that isnt insanely priced?
yeh all the great ones are gonna be pricey. you can go cheaper but you don't get gsync/freesync ability. this is a good one: amzn.to/1S3RY69 you can go even cheaper if you go down to 1080p but i wouldn't recommend
What are the PC specs?
thanks again for a wonderfull video , can you please let me know what is the depth of your desk? Thanks
+Coolissim0 Unl1mited hey coo, its 31.5 inches
techfreshness
thank you bro for the answer, I like your videos.
is a single 980ti enough for the x34? or better to go with the asus 2560x1440?
+Nic Selby hey nic, in my experience, the ti was enough for both monitors. it does depend on the game though, but you can run pretty much most games on at least high no problem (sans AA). there is actually slightly less pixels per second to push on the x34, but i'm not sure if that is the correct way to calculate it ha.
+techfreshness thanks for the reply. I'm still going to wait for Asus version of ultra wide and decide after. Hard decision haha! Gonna subscribe tho man, very good video!!
thx nic yeh prob good idea to wait, might get a price drop round the same time too depending on the asus price. either way, win
+techfreshness I'm too impatient and ordered Asus pg279q haha. I like the extra frames like you do and I think that ultra wide will be much better in a couple years when I next upgrade
yep, I think that's a good choice, by that time we should have 4k at 120+ in the widescreen. hope you enjoy it!
Are they the same height? I have the Asus ATM but tempted to get the Acer as main
+Brad Leeming yep, you can line them up exactly
awesome stuff, thanks for the reply!
With which GPU you evaluates thses two monitors ?
+Chun Qiu a single 980ti
Will a single GTX 980 card have enough oomph to run games at 100hz/full resolution on the ACER x34?
+Wellbuggerme Probably not on ultra, i got the pg279q & 980 ti strix and it's struggling in some games @ 1440p on ultra settings. If you're after high fps go sli
+Fleshmeister fleshmesiter is correct. i found 2440x1440 at 144 to be as about demanding as 3440x1440 at 100hz. of course it all depends on your games and settings. but at full ultra, will be tough sometimes
Hey man, I have a question. Are you still sticking with the Razer Blackwidow te?
+Barros Graphics blackwidow? i'm assuming you meant keyboard? i did not, am waiting for them to come out with one with media controls
Ok thanks
I am tied between the 2. I think it comes down to just how much difference 100hz - 165hz is. Im both a hardcore online FPS gamer and a RTS offline player so i dont know.
60hz is just unacceptable but is 100hz good enough? who knows
are you coming from 60fps?
techfreshness yep coming from 60fps.
Just bought this new PC www.wired2fire.co.uk/gaming-pc/diablo-extreme-pro-workstation-gamer.html
and now need to pick monitor
wow man serious rig!~nice.......if you play mostly fps and then just rts offline i would think the 165 is gonna be better imo, at least thats what i would pick
just because 165hz is much more advantageous to a wider screen in fps games
techfreshness thanks for the reply, i think im leaning towards the 165hz. How significantly would i have to lower the settings on say, something like overwatch/battlefield 1, to get 165hz on my rig?
Only thing I can say is try to illeminate that white noise. But, production quality is damn good.
+Alan Crome thanks a lot alan, i know man i have lots of issues actually. ha. i'm fairly limited in my space, but i definitely could use a new mic, thats the white noise you referring to?
+techfreshness I don't honestly know because I don't produce videos but I just noticed white noise in the back ground with my headphones on
yeh my b, my mic just sucks, ha
+techfreshness hey it's what you can get. Everyone starts somewhere. Keep it up
+Alan Crome No mate. This is not a white noise. His mic is just too near to his PC.This is the hardware sound...Fans...
What's better X34a or xb321hk 4k??
to me i'd go with the x34, higher frame rate right?
Are those 4K monitors?
No. The Acer is 3440x1440, and the Asus is 2560x1440
Whats the input lag like?
+elite76 imperceptible on both for me
+techfreshness Thanks.
+techfreshness Nah I went with the X34. Im a sucker for gimmicks.
nothing gimmicky to me! tis a badass monitor
Please help me pick one!!
Im thinking about the ASUS PG279Q Or the widescreen one is better??? I heard about the curved screen is not good!!?/
HELP D:!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+helen624 what games you play?
+techfreshness shooting games and gta5/ lol/ cod/bf!!!! Thanks
it just depends how sensitive you are to fps, if you are a pretty competitive player id go with asus. otherwise i think youd be happy with the acer, what monitor are you coming from?
Sorry, I just got your message and I haven't decided it yet! I came from SAMSUNG!!!!
what about the asus 34 pg348q / Acer X34 Predator?? Thanks :)
I head the Acer X34 got gamma adjustment though.
what graphics cards do you have? sli gtx980ti's?
+infernal nl hey infernal, no just one 980ti
