    My brain wont stop calling this panel 100 MEGA-hertz.... ugh. Too much overclocking on my brain. Its 100hz, not 100 Mhz.... Damn you Jay!

      +JayzTwoCents I'm using the freesync version of this panel, the X341CK, limited to 75hz, but coming from a 60hz 4k panel to this, I'm blown away. I love it, and since my rig was already set up to run 4k, it runs this display beautifully. The freesync model is about $300 cheaper, and max of 75hz, but other than that it's pretty much identical. Word of caution; people do need serious graphics hardware to power this. I'm using a 295X2 and while it performs great, in titles such at Witcher 3, I do have to tweak some settings to maintain high FPS, and most people are going to be running much lower powered graphics setups than that.

      +JayzTwoCents Hi jay I am a long time fan all the way back when you made a live stream build with Coconut monkey. I am using the Kn242HYL acer 1080p panel with 2 other old panels (900p and 720p). Your awesome man keep up the good work. I am also wondering what you think of the fx 8350 to todays standerds and is it still a good price to preformance CPU. Thank you Jay you insipred me to make my own system. I worked all summer and i am proud of it (Fx 8350, 16gb ram, Ga 990fxa ud3 motherbourd, Gtx 970)

      +Aggrieved Texan Do you mean a "semi-automatic" rifle since an "assault" rifle has selective fire (more then one mode) and can fire more then one round per trigger pull? Most "real" assault rifles cost over 10k and were made before 1986. AR-15s, AK-47s, etc. that the majority of people buy are "semi-automatic" rifles, and are not "assault" rifles. I do not see the name "assault rifle" as being bad myself, but so many people try to use that name to evoke fear in people for their own selfish purposes.

    Jay! The response time of 4ms stands for the monitors pixel response time. Meaning how fast the pixels change from black to black, the higher the response time the more ghosting you will have.
    It has nothing to do with latency.

      +Blodus The usual advertized number is from grey (light) to grey (dark), and it's the time that the pixel takes to change from when it starts, not from when the time the signal changes at the monitor's input.

    I've been seeing these 21:6 monitors for a while and I always just automatically dismissed them as I thought they were gimmicky and wacky and like higher-res, but not fully higher... But now I'm starting to see them more and they have some really awesome advantages, like movies and games look amazing and desktop multitasking is better, plus the wider field of view is just more natural for the eyes. But what scares me is that there is so much 16:9 content out there, mostly TV shows and UA-cam which I watch a TON of... more than I play games. So I can't decide if it's worth having black pillars on on most things that I watch.

    • @Darkfreestyler
      @Darkfreestyler 8 років тому

      Wouldn't it be helpful to just go to the next store and see it in rl rather than a YT video? It might help you to decide of it's really that bad.

    • @uetzel
      @uetzel 8 років тому

      i also don't know, 21:9 monitors look impressive, but 4k has a higher res and there is a lot more 16:9 content which would have black bars in 21:9, but 21:9 is a lot easier on your GPU and awesome for gaming ........fuuuuuuuu i don't know

    I had a 34" LG 21:9 monitor for a while then went to 4K and absolutely loved it as far a desktop real estate. Once Acer announced this display I had to have it. Unfortunately it was out of stock everywhere for the longest time but I was finally able to order one. Having had the Predator for a few months now, I can safely say it is the best monitor I have ever owned.

    I got this monitor, love it. I was using a 2560x1600 30" Dell I bought 8 years ago for $1250. I didn't realize how bad the colors on the Dell had gotten. I noticed the Dell is not quite as bright as it used to be, but damn the difference between that and this new monitor is unreal. I'm using it successfully with just a gtx 970 while waiting for those aftermarket 1070 and 1080 to be in stock and not overpriced.

    21:9 is amazing and it's what I use for gaming and productivity. I also run a 16:9 to the right to watch youtube and other content while I work. I have noticed that some games take a weird approach to 21:9 that I don't like. Instead of simply taking the standard 16:9 ratio and adding more viewing space to the left and right, some games (not very many mind you) are "zooming in" instead. When they do this, you get less viewing space, not more.

I forget what the refresh rate is, though. I picked it up on sale from Newegg for about $120, and couldn't be happier.

      +Dncmaster That depends on what games you want to play, lets say like Fallout 4 or Battlefront as new releases then deffinetly not (If you want a smooth experience, or if you can accept playing with very low details) On the other hand if you play something like League, CSGO or other similar titles, then you're probably gonna be fine at medium to high settings.

    Response time only very minimally affects INPUT LAG. It the ghosting/blur that is the main issue with high response times.
    (Jay talked about 4ms being fine for shooters or whatever in terms of input lag which again isn't really the issue)
    It's also worth noting that ghosting drops as the refresh rate increases, even at the same response time so 100Hz@4ms has less ghosting than 60Hz@4ms (blurbusters probably explains that well).

    Jay, you are right about fps perception. Movies are at 24 fps because this is the lowest rate that human eye can recognize as continuous movement. It doesn't mean however that you can't see a difference from there up, which in fact you can.
    Other than that I use a Swift.

    next monitor will definitely be a 21:9... 5K maybe? haha

    The aspect ratio is called 21:9 because it is more relatable to 16:9 this way, but 7:3 would be just as wrong. It's actually 64:27 (4^3:3^3; similar to 16:9 being 4^2:3^2, both are just extensions of the 4:3 standard) which works out as 21.33...:9. 21:9 is just more convenient.

    It’s 2019, I picked up a used x34 cheap. Running a 1080ti. It pushes ~100hz consistently in the shooters I play at low settings. Occasionally pushing the limits of a panel isn’t the point, it’s whether your rig can mostly keep a panel pegged to your in game frame limit. It took a while for God’s to catch up to 3440 100+has panels. Given bad game builds or lengthy time to patch, I’m not throwing a bunch of $ at any upgrades for a while.

    I will have to say i love ultra-wide screen displays and i will never go back to 16:9. I am running a LG 29UB65-P ultra-wide 1080p IPS panel and i absolutely love it. My panel only runs at 60hz/5ms but that's the only config I've ever ran before so i wouldn't know any different. I did some research into the how fast the eye can see a long time ago, here is what I remember.:
    It varies and depends on how large a display, periphery, and distance from display. What is right in front of you, which you are focusing on is said to be some were around 60-80hz for most people (they see faster, but at this speed they do not notice discomfort). However your peripheral vision , which does not focus sees much faster, this is a "self defense mechanism." Ever played sports and reached up at the last second and stopped a ball from hitting you in the head without ever looking, yep that's why. Estimates here are that the eye can perceive motion at possibly as fast as 1000hz, but color shift is slower due to a chemical reaction in the eye that lets us see color, it was estimated that 80-100hz is desired (for comfort). SO what does this all mean , it means everyone is a little different , for most people a standard size screen under 24 inches 72 hz-80hz is probably fine , but the bigger the screen, and the closer you sit means the screens edge, such as in a 3 screen surround setup is in your peripheral vision so the faster you need it to be to be comfortable. So a single 24 inch for some people at 2 ft is comfortable at 72hz-80hz but 3x 27 inch display setup may need to be around 100-120hz to be comfortable due to the left and right screens being in your periphery. Answer if you buy a bigger screen and do not move your chair further back you may want it to be a faster monitor. This would explain why going from a 3 screen set up to a single 34 inch did not bother Jay , despite the size of the monitor his 3+1 setup had more screen at the edge of his vision.
    NOTE , I kind of generalized a bit, and the numbers are those I remember reading about and were said to be theoretical estimates at the time(not of how fast we see but of how fast it needs to be to be comfortable), but basically if you buy a big screen and want to sit close , buy the fastest you can afford that has color you like.

      Sorry but you got non of the x34's specs that you name right.
      Its not 4K (aktually its called UHD, 4K is cinema only), but UWQHD with a res of 3440x1440, wich is the wider version of 1440 QHD. It got 100Hz, not 144Hz,
      wich will be managable in most, if not all games with a 980ti, OCed 980, 1070 or 1080 (OCed Fury or Fury X would manage it, but don't support G-Sync).
      The
      other monitor you name 7s a verry good one for gaming indeed. Yet the x34 makes gaming much more immersive with its ultra wide res and the curve.

      you are going to wait a long time for that. There is not even an interface Technology out yet, that could transfer 4K Res at 144HZ.
      The fastest available interface would be DP1.4 and that can handle up to 120Hz @ 4K (with loss afflicted compression). And even that one is not used by display manufacturers yet, although it has been out for 1 or 2 years.
      I doubt there will be a 4K / 144Hz Display in the next 4 or 5 years (for less than 5K $ that is)...

      Don't buy 4K unless you have a high end SLI of CF rig, even then 21:9 is subjectively better for gaming and most people agree 1440P is a better desktop experience over 4K (2160p) which has odd scaling issues.

  • @___Robin___
    @___Robin___ 8 років тому +1

    +JayzTwoCents the reason they call it 21:9 and not 7:3 is because it makes it very easy to visualize compared to the mainstream 16:9. The exact correct term however is neither of them but should be referred to as 64/27. Since 4:3 has been the mainstream for quite a while all others derive from it. 4/3 x 4/3 = 16/9 and 4/3 x 4/3 x 4/3 = 64/27 = about 21:9 and therefore should never be rounded to 7:3 (which you could to visualize it to 4/3). 21:9 = 2.33:1 and 64/27 = 2.370:1 .In conclusion the correct term is 64/27, the used term is 21:9 for visualizing it with the mainstream reason. if they would make a new ultraultrawide standard it would be (4/3)^4. This allows electronic scalers to use an imlplemented 4/3 scale factor which makes it easier for developers.

    I use LG 29UM65P and gaming on this beauty is amazing. Of course it is annoying that some games still do not support this aspect ratio, but I hope it will change soon.
    The drop in FPS is not that significant - only about 5 - 10 FPS in GTA V on ultra (R9 280X).
    If someone is considering the purchase - 21:9 is a way to go.
