  • NYMR - North Yorkshire Moors Railway from the air by drone. The second installment at Levisham Moor in summer with steam and diesel trains passing through between Pickering, Gothland, Grossmont and Whitby.
Aerial footage around the NYMR Levisham area, features spectacular views from Skelton Tower and the Levisham Estate along the valley following Pickering Beck and Newtondale Forest.
Bonus footage at the end takes place in torrential rainfall, as a demonstration of dedication to the mission of capturing the perfect off the grid shot!

Beautiful run through in the lush countryside, even in the rain at the end, nice one!

Thanks for viewing. The rain had not been forecast but we managed to keep all the equipment dry.

I hope the UA-cam algorithm picks up your videos, David. They are such a pleasure to watch.

Thanks again for your encouragement. Not all videos get the same promotion, despite similar titles and content, however the main thing for me is that I enjoy the process from start to end. It is a bonus if I can attract a few viewers to share that with.

Man, you've got to love the old steam trains, I only get to see one at Christmas when it does special runs from Dublin. Very nice indeed, so I guess you've got a new subscriber from Ireland 👍

I was at Levisham on Friday 23rd September and I asked a member of staff about any restrictions on the use of a drone. I was told that I needed to give 21 days notice and it had to be professional photography. Only fire service personnel are allowed to use drones anywhere in the National Park when looking for fires. Seems like a whole load of cobblers to me as CAA dictates the airspace. There is a cautionary boundary along the rail route but that's obvious when using Altitude Angel. The only other restriction is near Flyingdale and that's a bit obvious too. How did you get on with filming? Any permission needed? Edit: Just read rules on drone footage in the National Park. They only own 1% of land, all other land is private property and even to film on np land, you need insurance and training. They have cherry picked the rules from CAA. No mention of being under 250g

My understanding is that it has less to do with where you film (other than the obvious Fylingdale restrictions) but where you launch from. As you say, the National Park have rules about this, though somewhat antiquated and more in keeping with the use of 250 plus professional drones. Certain sites in the area do have clear drone restriction signs but public roads and private land can be used for launching.

I own a drone and live in one of the houses in the first shot and I have a piece of paper with the restrictions on for this area and if you go above 80ft you are illegally flying but pushing 75 they will find you. But that is only from the bottom of the valley also you are not right they don’t only own “1%” they own about 10% I know this from the paperwork spread around our house because I quite often get sent out to find illegally flying drones on the station so I have most of the paperwork with me now of which is what I’m reading this off. But the amount of work they do on the land it seems like 1%. Enjoy your day
