Fresh water is called "sweet water" in some languages. Salt water is actually called "bitter water" in some languages like Hebrew and Arabic. It was a jigsaw puzzle or a mishmash of smaller walls for many centuries before parts of it were refurbished and joined together, so some parts could indeed be that old, but it's not likely they would be known of in Mesopotamia. It's more likely they mean a large fortification closer to home.

I am an Indian and started watching this video out of sheer curiosity. I found this man's diction was perfect, his usage of words was exact and his pauses were immaculate. Then it dawned upon me that he was English. We, in India, are more attuned to the accent of the native English speakers and find the Australian or the New Zealander's accent slightly difficult to comprehend.
I had no interest in cuneiform and not much in the ancient Middle East. Then I watched a video with Dr. Irving Finkel and was fascinated! His enthusiasm and knowledge just radiate out and draws you in. I really like his videos, plus it doesn't hurt that he's adorable with a wonderful sense of humor! The man is an international treasure and Britain is extremely fortunate to have him

well i was ridiculously ecstatic to have this pop up on my recommendation feed. love to see more and more institutions like museums embrace global access media so that people who will never make it their physical location can still learn from and about them. Irvine Finkel is brilliant on camera, 10/10 whoever thought to put this man in front of a camera.
Knowing a lot and infecting an audience with a fascination for a topic are two very distinct things, and so rarely do they combine in the same person. When I try to remember my own school days I can think of one awesome teacher and a small handful of good ones, the same numbers repeat in university. Given what I hear from my sons about their experience at school I have to consider myself very lucky. It's always sad to see teachers who obviously know their stuff but just can't get it to transfer to the class. Dr. Finkel is a shining beacon to those poor people - not just exceptionally well versed in the subject matter but also so in love with it that it shows in every sentence, capturing an audience of one as easily as one of hundreds, making it easy to learn, to commit to long-term memory, and to find the motivation to come back for more. I get a notification for all of The British Museum's new videos, and I do watch some of them. But in truth, the notification is just to see if there's a new video starring Irving Finkel so I can't miss any.

Dr. Irving Finkel might be one of the best storytellers in the world. Sometimes I'm almost hesitant to watch videos with him because I'm oblivious to the state of the world when I'm watching and sad when it ends. But what a wonderful time it is.

It's crazy how Irving manages to make me feel like he is talking DIRECTLY to me... no camera, no script, no nothing. He's just showing me this nifty tablet with the story deduced from it as it seems reasonable
I think the 5th one describes ancient Lebanon, and the 'wall' thing means a dense forest of local trees (Cedrus libani) which can grow up to 42m (yes, meters) for 2-3 thousands years which for me would definitely look like a wall, but those trees are usually no longer than 5m. If you consider Ararat as a mark for 4th region then 5th 'triangle' points exactly at Lebanon. What is striking is that if one would like to walk from ancient babylon to lebanon it would take you approx. 9 days by foot. In the myth of Gilgamesh he literally walks from Ur to lebanon (where are cedars of gods) and fights with a monster there, which is strange because this map suggests that he should swim there for 7 leagues. He walked for 6 days, and this description indicates 7 leagues, but the time of walking may vary depending of the speed of walking, especially if you are considered a giant among your people. In lebanon there is the mount of lebanon where are the last cedars of gods till this day (and they are still called cedars of gods). It also states that the cedars of gods were protected from humans by some kind of god / demigod till the time of Gilgamesh. And you know what? There are some very big stones in lebanon, the biggest we have ever concluded to be created by human hand (Baalbek stone). I've been fascinated with cuneiform writing ever since I stumbled upon a book on the subject as a teenager, some 35+ years ago. A new video from Dr Finkel is always a jolt of dopamine for me, and this one did not disappoint.
Loved the bird reference at the conclusion of this video; however, there was an earlier bird reference which fascinated me. Dr. Finkle mentioned "giant birds that could not fly" in one of the eight triangles beyond the "Bitter River" which circles the known world of Mesopotamia. That brought to mind the legend of the Roc in Arabic literature, as well as the very real elephant birds of Madagascar, which went extinct around a thousand years ago. Did the Mesopotamians know of them?
Prof. Finkel lights up my very dismal and dreary life right now, and I will forever cherish him for it.He, and Sir David Attenborough, and I believe Professor Finkel, for his service to archaeology and Assyriology,is deserving of the accolade AT LEAST!
They are both amazing people and fantastic presenters who enthrall us with their descriptions! Both of them should be fully credited with engaging millions of people, young and old. (I know Attenborough was finally knighted, many years after his brother, who was only an actor. But I'm unsure about Dr Finkle.) Many of those people would not have become interested in those fields, were it not for Dr Finkle and David Attenborough. But they were drawn to it because these 2 men, in their own very individual ways, have pulled us in so VERY effectively with their sense of joy and wonder. That enthusiasm is simply irreplaceable in a teacher of any kind.
Is Edith Horsley still with us? I'm guessing not. What a legend. It's so cool that an enthusiastic and informed amateur made the breakthrough that unlocked this mystery.

Irving Finkel is such an amazing speaker. I could sit and listen to him all day.
Knowing a lot and infecting an audience with a fascination for a topic are two very distinct things, and so rarely do they combine in the same person. When I try to remember my own school days I can think of one awesome teacher and a small handful of good ones, the same numbers repeat in university. Given what I hear from my sons about their experience at school I have to consider myself very lucky. It's always sad to see teachers who obviously know their stuff but just can't get it to transfer to the class. Dr. Finkel is a shining beacon to those poor people - not just exceptionally well versed in the subject matter but also so in love with it that it shows in every sentence, capturing an audience of one as easily as one of hundreds, making it easy to learn, to commit to long-term memory, and to find the motivation to come back for more.
I get a notification for all of The British Museum's new videos, and I do watch some of them. But in truth, the notification is just to see if there's a new video starring Irving Finkel so I can't miss any.

I love how he sounds like he's speaking from memory both when talking about working with Horsley and when describing the contents of the tablet
that's cause he is. humans are pretty perceptive, we can tell when someone is reading from an off-screen prompter. this has none of those hallmarks. It's always a pleasure to see someone that is good at their job and they enjoy it. And Mr. Finkle is nice enough to share with us all, the more marvel. Videos like this make me thank the universe for being alive at the same time as him and able to partake in his wisdom.

It's crazy how Irving manages to make me feel like he is talking DIRECTLY to me... no camera, no script, no nothing. He's just showing me this nifty tablet with the story deduced from it as it seems reasonable
I think the 5th one describes ancient Lebanon, and the 'wall' thing means a dense forest of local trees (Cedrus libani) which can grow up to 42m (yes, meters) for 2-3 thousands years which for me would definitely look like a wall, but those trees are usually no longer than 5m. If you consider Ararat as a mark for 4th region then 5th 'triangle' points exactly at Lebanon. What is striking is that if one would like to walk from ancient babylon to lebanon it would take you approx. 9 days by foot.
In the myth of Gilgamesh he literally walks from Ur to lebanon (where are cedars of gods) and fights with a monster there, which is strange because this map suggests that he should swim there for 7 leagues. He walked for 6 days, and this description indicates 7 leagues, but the time of walking may vary depending of the speed of walking, especially if you are considered a giant among your people. In lebanon there is the mount of lebanon where are the last cedars of gods till this day (and they are still called cedars of gods). It also states that the cedars of gods were protected from humans by some kind of god / demigod till the time of Gilgamesh.
And you know what? There are some very big stones in lebanon, the biggest we have ever concluded to be created by human hand (Baalbek stone).
Nevertheless I think it is something worth considering.

Goosebumps all over! This episode is both packed with information and an ode to the imagination, as I have come to expect from dr Finkel.
I've been fascinated with cuneiform writing ever since I stumbled upon a book on the subject as a teenager, some 35+ years ago. A new video from Dr Finkel is always a jolt of dopamine for me, and this one did not disappoint.
Dr. Finkel is such an amazing science communicator.
Loved the bird reference at the conclusion of this video; however, there was an earlier bird reference which fascinated me. Dr. Finkle mentioned "giant birds that could not fly" in one of the eight triangles beyond the "Bitter River" which circles the known world of Mesopotamia. That brought to mind the legend of the Roc in Arabic literature, as well as the very real elephant birds of Madagascar, which went extinct around a thousand years ago. Did the Mesopotamians know of them?
I could listen to him for hours. He has the gift of storytelling.
Prof. Finkel lights up my very dismal and dreary life right now, and I will forever cherish him for it.He, and Sir David Attenborough, and I believe Professor Finkel, for his service to archaeology and Assyriology,is deserving of the accolade AT LEAST!
They are both amazing people and fantastic presenters who enthrall us with their descriptions! Both of them should be fully credited with engaging millions of people, young and old. (I know Attenborough was finally knighted, many years after his brother, who was only an actor. But I'm unsure about Dr Finkle.) Many of those people would not have become interested in those fields, were it not for Dr Finkle and David Attenborough. But they were drawn to it because these 2 men, in their own very individual ways, have pulled us in so VERY effectively with their sense of joy and wonder. That enthusiasm is simply irreplaceable in a teacher of any kind.
