this is one of the greatest scenes ever to be filmed, the acting, the energy, the sexual tension, the camerawork, the music, the action, the truck, the buildup, it's just so well done, I think it's probably the most underappreciated film out there, it has it all
They portray the two lead protagonists still being in love with perfection. With Bill living in some strong denial and Jo shamelessly still in overtly in love with Bill.
I was about to say something similar. The whole segment of dinner at Meg's to rushing out the door is MORE than just watching a movie. The vibe feels like you're sitting at that dinner table, and as they're rolling out of town against the backdrop of the water tower, you're on this journey with them. It's no longer just a piece of entertainment. The way all their cars form a line, with the camper in position and red truck in the lead, God it's epic, and when the truck goes into the turn you can't help but feel excited about what's happening. By contrast, Jonas and all those identical SUVs and trailers look so institutional and sterile that they don't conjure up any emotional response at all. More of a creepy sci-fi vibe, or like they're there to clean up a chemical spill.

That helicopter descent shot onto Jonas’ convoy is one of my favorite shots ever put to film. Not to mention it was done practically. Cars drove slow as the chopper came down, then they sped it up to look highway speed.

That's one reason why this scene always stuck with me, this giant wide-open shot, that then zooms down for tight shot on the convoy, zooming down the road. Paired with Mancina's score, it's stuck with me over 2 decades.
The cinematography in this film is outstanding and has some of the best camera work I've ever seen for an event film. The SFX hold up very well too as well even today.

Scenes like this transcend the screen and feel like more than watching a movie. It feels like you're part of something important or are at least bearing witness to something monumental. I feel the same way about certain scenes in Independence Day. Bigger than a movie. It becomes more something that marks an era than a random 90-minute/2 hour movie you saw over the weekend. Other comparisons are the Delorean reveal, fight sequences in Gladiator, any 3 hour 90s movie on 2 tapes, Drew Barrymore in Scream, Bohemian Rhapsody in Wayne's World, Hasta La Vista Baby. They cease to be movie clips and just become part of your life. I dunno how else to put it!
One thing that I always enjoyed about this scene other than the phenomenal cinematography and music, is the characterization of both convoys of vehicles. Jonas' convoy looks very strict to form and each car looks nearly identical to the last, giving it a very "serious business", sort of look with no room for personality to show. Makes sense as he is the main antagonist of the movie, besides the tornadoes themselves of course. Then there is the stark contrast of Jo and Bill's convoy, where each vehicle looks unique, colorful and visually more interesting in general. There's a clearer aspect of fun involved with the business here. Which fits with the cast of colorful individuals Jo and Bill's team consists of.
What's so awesome is the electric guitar with the orchestra getting you amped up and then when he says "there's a little detour, we're gonna take a walk in the woods" (which is so badass to me) followed by the hard rock song by Van Halen as they start off-roading. And the excitement they feel as they go over the bumps in the road. Makes you feel like you're on this journey with them and you feel as pumped as they are.
Even as a kid, I noticed the look Aunt Meg gives Melissa after she tells her that she better run. It’s a skeptical “She won’t cut it for Bill” face. Like she knew Melissa was in over her head.
Honestly, thanks to watching this movie as much as I did as a kid, Jo’s personality helped shape my taste in women. A tomboyish gal that can throw down and keep pace with the rowdy guys.

Bill Paxton said back in 2012 that he "was struck with an idea" for a sequel during vacation but that a sequel would need permission from Steven Spielberg (who produced the first one). There's been mention of it here and there since then, but I doubt it would happen given that the first one had a perfect conclusion. It'd be nice to see, but as a lover of the first movie who watched it everyday as a child, there as to be a good story and the cast of the original (although Philip Seymour Hoffman died) has to come back. Who knows? I'm not ruling a sequel out as a fan, I just don't want a repeat of the first one like Into The Storm did.

If you remove the music it's just cars driving around the country. A phenomenal example of how much a score impacts the film! Hope the sequel next month continues this legacy. #RIPBillPaxton #RIPPhilipSeymourHoffman #RIPEddieVanHalen

This is the exact reason that "Humans Being" by Van Halen has become my storm chasing anthem. Leaving tomorrow on a 4 day storm chase through the midwest, can't wait to crank this song, (look for it to be in the background in the videos I am sure to post, lol)
I hope Melissa kept in contact with Dusty, when she was crying he was holding the Umbrella for her feeling sad, heard something deep over the radio. He showed compassion to her and definitely needed this kind of lively man in her life. Hope we get her as a cameo in the sequel visiting Jo and they mention stories of bill and dusty

I used to be scared of storms thanks to a close call of a tornado touching down like a block of us kinda behind us. The funnel formed & at that moment my dad spotted the funnel shit hit the fan outside, the electric flickered on & off a few times, the gusty winds, deadly lightening, crashing thunder. I remember most of it, I just don't remember what the cloud looked like. After the funnel split, everything calmed down. We were calming down, cause we really didn't have a place to seek shelter, & it's very rare for a tornado you hit here, we have bluffs that somehow pushes the worst of the storm north & around us. The lightening went on for hours, with a dark green sky, lightening flashes brightening outside up like daytime. I was so glad you be able to go to bed & sleep then to not have a house. But that's why I was scared of storms until I was 17 & all of a sudden I overcame my fear. I love storms now, the worst the better, I'd love to chase, but I'd get myself killed in a heartbeat. It's best that I don't drive while chasing, cause I'd be trying to see the tornado, & watch my driving to save my ass.
3:03 as the camera sweeps up over the ridge to reveal the convoy thrashing through the landscape in a cloud of dust as Sammy screams "Shine On, Shiiiiine Oooonnnn" 💪💪
At the time, Mark Mancina (the film's composer) and Trevor Rabin both belonged to Hans Zimmers' music production house, Remote Control Productions (or also known as 'Media Ventures')... It turns out that throughout the 90s: Mark Mancina, Hans Zimmer, Trevor Rabin (Armageddon), Harry Gregson-Williams (Kingdom of Heaven), Steve Jablonsky (Transformers), John Powell (Face/Off), Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones), Klaus Badelt (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Nick Glennie-Smith (The Rock co-composer) collaborated on quite a few film scores together...... Zimmer/Mancina: The Lion King. Zimmer/Glennie-Smith: The Rock. Rabin/Gregson-Williams: Enemy of the State. Rabin/Gregson-Williams/Jablonsky: Armageddon. Powell/Gregson-Williams: Shrek. Zimmer/Gregson-Williams/Powell/Badelt: The Prince of Egypt. Zimmer/Badelt/Jablonsky/Glennie-Smith: Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. These dudes pretty much have a monopoly on the most popular film scores of the 90s and 2000s... could be considered the best of contemporary classical music and most certainly, responsible for the most influential and recognizable film scores of the last 2 decades. kudos to them!
+MNsportsnut your right. I use two gps when I'm chasing. One for my radar to see where I am in regards to the storm and a gps mounted in the truck. Though I guess a paper map would be a good thing as well.
+MNsportsnut Well if you really knew what you were doing, you would use neither because abandoned roads, tractor roads, or side roads that stormchasers use are usually not marked and deleted from google maps or other shitty navigational services. And that's assuming the tornado didn't snap all the cell towers in the are you are chasing.
Unless you download the data and keep a large record, GPS/Google Maps is useless. I’ve chased through the rural parts of Missouri and Iowa and there are places that lose reception in an instant. On a good day they may still have one or two bars; under a storm, forget about it.

And yes i would love to chase a tornado one day😂
Same here. Square body Suburbans are awesome. Custom Dually Suburbans are rare too. I miss Bill Paxton so much
And I love twister 🌪
And I love the twister game
3:52. Anyone else notice the pickup with camper in the box...
That camper just rocking as the pickup merges into the road.
Me already
If you remove the music it's just cars driving around the country. A phenomenal example of how much a score impacts the film! Hope the sequel next month continues this legacy. #RIPBillPaxton #RIPPhilipSeymourHoffman #RIPEddieVanHalen
I would leave everything i have to join them.
Same
Me too! No Second Thoughts About It!
The soundtrack is epic. You can feel the suspense
I first watched this movie when I was like 5. I'm 20 now and this movie along with Titanic are still my favorites!
2:44 I always loved those 2 (especially the girl with glasses) and I definitely love how they drive 😂
Also she almost looks like Kelsie from High School Musical!
They're so cool I agree. She always looked aversion of Velma fromnScooby Doo to me!
1:22 I always enjoyed that camera pan, and the aerial shot by the water tower.
Rabbit is good, Rabbit is wise.
Hello! ... shit. LOL Never gets old.
you're exactly right on that one
I thought he used to say "Hello little shit!"
favorite part of the whole film! cant help but get pumped up when they go slammin through the woods with Van Halen blasting
This is the exact reason that "Humans Being" by Van Halen has become my storm chasing anthem. Leaving tomorrow on a 4 day storm chase through the midwest, can't wait to crank this song, (look for it to be in the background in the videos I am sure to post, lol)
This 4 minute clip is a gazillion times better than the abomination of the remake twisters that I watched today 😅😅
Naaaa
The new movie is not that bad
Sadly no flying cows or the music
But fun tornado destruction
I hope Melissa kept in contact with Dusty, when she was crying he was holding the Umbrella for her feeling sad, heard something deep over the radio. He showed compassion to her and definitely needed this kind of lively man in her life. Hope we get her as a cameo in the sequel visiting Jo and they mention stories of bill and dusty
BELTZER: "An ordinary man spends his life avoiding tense situations!"
DUSTY: "Repo Man spends his life getting IN to tense situations, BELTZER!!!! WOOO!!!!!"
Like him or hate him, you've got to respect Dusty's enthusiasm. RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman (1967 - 2014)
Best movie ever, with the best soundtrack. To this day, everytime i see an old dodge ram, i think of twister.
I'm sure Ram sales went up after this movie came out
Anybody ever yell Hello Shit like preacher when ever someone gets cut off
Whenever i see this movie , I want hop into dodge 1500 and go to Tornado
19 years old, still my favorite movie.
I love the convoy with bill and joes team
I would like to be on that team too
It's a wonder of nature baby!!
What an awesome song with an amazing well made movie! Even though I commented 7 years later 😂
1:01 awww I love golden retrievers! ^_^ Mose is so cute!
ChristianFreedude is that what is name is?
kaleb welch No it's Mose XD like short for Moses
Sunset Shimmer the Magical Virgin Smelling Buttshaking Unicorn (Aka Captain Phasma) oh
kaleb welch yep ^^
Actually, his name was Moose. My Golden looked just like him, and his name was Brandon, after Punky Brewster's dog. He lived from 1986-2001.
The guitar part at 1:32 actually wasn't played by Eddie Van Halen, but instead Trevor Rabin of Yes.
Gino Moscati basically these guys are the heirs to the many thrones of composition owned by the great John Williams
love this movie and always will watched it a million times and never gets old
lol. I've been watching this movie for 16 years. Saw it 4 times in the theater and over 200 times since.
there's just something about wanting to be aunt meg & be in her kitchen! her character was just so COOL!
Steak, Eggs and fresh lemonade. Hell yes I'm there.
In today's world, Rabbit wouldn't even use the maps. He'd either use a GPS in the truck or Google Maps app on a tablet or iPad.
Yes, but could you guarantee reception with all that stormy weather? Just asking.
Because.. rabbit is good, rabbit is wise.
Unless you download the data and keep a large record, GPS/Google Maps is useless. I’ve chased through the rural parts of Missouri and Iowa and there are places that lose reception in an instant. On a good day they may still have one or two bars; under a storm, forget about it.
Bill - "Okay Rabbit! Time too impress me!"
RIP B.P.😢 NO BS Twister my favorite movie since I was 5 when it came out dont think the new one will even beat it tbh
Ah man, extreme trail riding to catch a tornado, with Van Halen cranked up? Damn doesn't get better than that
Would love to hear Humans Being in the new movie 🤞
Yesssssss great fans of the cast
I actually lived Wakita,Oklahoma
I knew that place was real
It's in Grant county
+Michael Dowden cool
+Nick Yates seriously
really
Was in niagara falls on the canadian side few days ago for the eclipse. It was predicted a cloudy day so Me and my wife were chasing the clear skies with a paper map of the totality path and she told me this is the closest she felt like a storm chaser and this 1:32 scene came to mind😂. And yes i would love to chase a tornado one day😂
Rabitty is good, Rabbity is wise!

I've always liked Jonas' truck. I've never seen a dually suburban in real live though. Apparently, those are rare trucks.
They're probably made for the movie only. They did the same with the hunting jeeps in Jurassic Park Lost World.
Same here. Square body Suburbans are awesome. Custom Dually Suburbans are rare too. They were probably built for customers and companies that towed heavy duty trailers like construction, horse trailers, and campers. There were also Custom built Suburban limousines that had 6-8 doors used by airports at one time.
This movie is why I fell in love with trucks!
“shine on” by van halen! Gets me pumped up everytime!
Actually the song title is Humans Being.R.I.P Eddie Van Halen
