Interestng construction of this kit .. walls and trim etc. * Turning the miter box upside down to use as a sanding surface .. wow .. total sense. What fun!
What an outstanding tutorial! The best one I have seen on constructing a plastic kit! It didn't occur to me until I saw this video that you can work with plastic kits the same way as real wood ones. The results are amazing, thank you for sharing your tips and techniques, I took notes!

I really like how you made the plastic look like wood. My On30 0-2-2 weathered I took the wood parts of the cab and took a small wire brush to it. the used acrylic paint for the main layer then used watercolor pencils and pastel i use krylon matte finish is is used for protecting pastels and drawings between layers. What I like about is it goes on very thin and dries fast.I really enjoy watching you build your layout. Your work is amazing.
Jason, often, all it takes is for someone to open our eyes to the possibilities available in different media. I've been a real snob about building with wood. Maybe it's time to dress up some of those old City Classics structures. I've got an old engine house I started years ago in styrene; it needs to come out of the box, too! Thanks for the lessons!

Great video. I have a couple of these buildings. I did a quick and dirty weathering and distressing using HB and B pencils on the claps and stock roof. Also added some signs on exterior walls. Looks pretty good for a very small time investment for a building that can s a mid ground location.

Wow Jason! The detailing part of the video is priceless! Me ... I'm definitely a plastics kit guy, so these techniques will be incorporated in all my other kits. I'm even gonna upgrade some of my older built kits buildings and houses. Inspirational stuff!
John, don't be afraid to buy some evergreen styrene siding and strips and scratchbuild your own building using the same techniques that Jason did, or maybe add an addition to a kit. I prefer plastic over wood just for this purpose, you see how well the results can be and no warping when using liquids like paint and washes. :)
I also meant to say how strongly I feel that the quality of a lot of the older Walthers kits don't reflect the price they demand today. Your efforts show that with a lot of work, these models can be brought up to represent looks that are comparable to the higher quality craftsmen kits.
I believe that Plastic Kits require MORE skill to make look good. Very nice techniques Jason!! I've done that "lifted clapboard" trick on Wood Kits many times... BUT have never tried it on Plastic before. I gotta try that!! 😁 Carmine ✈🚂🚙

im so glad to see that someone besides myself only buys fruit snacks just for the boxes, they make the best roofing material hands down, lmao. Very good technique Jason and very well presented. Your how to videos are great and I personally have used evergreen for my wood for years using the same/similar techniques. I find the plastic to be easier and more forgiving than wood and glues very strong and fast too. Thanks for sharing
Yeah, on my board & batten sand house, I cut battens off at top and bottom...and bent them where they would have come loose and time and water caused it to move. I also used a course sandpaper, file and zona saw. Your right Jason...it’s possible and cheap 😁
Building looks awesome. Just one thing. The rolled roofing paper should go under the wood shingles because it would have been put on first. Then the shingles. Still looks very realistic especially for that scale. Since more than half of the wood shingles appear to have been blown off, I hope you have some on the ground around the building. Not a lot being that they were blown off and would most likely would have been a good distance away when they landed and picked up shortly after. But it wouldn't hurt to have a few lying around close by. They too would have been cleaned up quickly but it might just add a little something to your layout. Which by the way is looking amazing. Nicely done.

Ok, yeah, you're good! This is something I think is important in model railroading. Wood kits are nice, but there are so many plastic models available, need to be able to detail them up to a more realistic wood like appearance. Inspirating video! 👍🏻

Hey Jason, I know this is an old video, but can you do more of these kind of video's? Here in Europe we don't have the luxury to buy those wooden kits without going bankrupt on shipping costs :) This technique is a good substitution.

Thanks for this - I've read about a lot of the techniques used but seeing them put into practice helps an awful lot! One thing - why don't you prime the plastic before painting?

Hi Jason I use plastic kits, but watching your channel has prompted me to purchase a range of Decoart Americana craft paints which are a lot less expensive than modelling acrylics such as Vallejo. I notice with this build you use the craft paints, but I am reading on the Internet that craft paint is not suitable for plastics as it is not durable enough. What is your opinion?
That was excellent video Jason. You do great work. Have you done any N-scale modelling? I am curious if the dragging the saw and x-acto blades over the model to simulate wood and brushing paint would scale well?
Hi Jason so I took a look at FOS Models and they are impressive but unfortunately I live in Calgary, Alberta Canada and a lot of these companies won't ship to Canada because the cost is prohibitive. I like the premade model idea but what I do is copy the picture and try to build the item out of foam or wood or cardboard out of scratch a bit more work but just the same lots of fun. Do you know where to find old diecast cars of vehicles can you give me a link and maybe do a links page and video of the companies that you buy your various items from. If you could do this it would give a lot of hits to your channel. Again I really like your builds although they are models and not scratch builds. Blessings P. Randy Bourque

Where do you buy the detail items such as the hinges and brooms and the old dolly the barrels, or do you make them all. I always appreciate people who leave a list of where to buy items in their comments so as for new people it gives us a chance to find some of this stuff. Your how to videos are great and I personally have used evergreen for my wood for years using the same/similar techniques. I find the plastic to be easier and more forgiving than wood and glues very strong and fast too. Thanks for sharing

Yeah, on my board & batten sand house, I cut battens off at top and bottom...and bent them where they would have come loose and time and water caused it to move. I also used a course sandpaper, file and zona saw. Your right Jason...it’s possible and cheap 😁

Building looks awesome. Just one thing. The rolled roofing paper should go under the wood shingles because it would have been put on first. Then the shingles. Still looks very realistic especially for that scale. Since more than half of the wood shingles appear to have been blown off, I hope you have some on the ground around the building. Not a lot being that they were blown off and would most likely would have been a good distance away when they landed and picked up shortly after. But it wouldn't hurt to have a few lying around close by. They too would have been cleaned up quickly but it might just add a little something to your layout. Which by the way is looking amazing. Nicely done.

Ok, yeah, you're good! This is something I think is important in model railroading. Wood kits are nice, but there are so many plastic models available, need to be able to detail them up to a more realistic wood like appearance. Inspirating video! 👍🏻

Hey Jason, I know this is an old video, but can you do more of these kind of video's? Here in Europe we don't have the luxury to buy those wooden kits without going bankrupt on shipping costs :) This technique is a good substitution.

Thanks for this - I've read about a lot of the techniques used but seeing them put into practice helps an awful lot! One thing - why don't you prime the plastic before painting?

I use plastic kits, but watching your channel has prompted me to purchase a range of Decoart Americana craft paints which are a lot less expensive than modelling acrylics such as Vallejo.
I notice with this build you use the craft paints, but I am reading on the Internet that craft paint is not suitable for plastics as it is not durable enough.
What is your opinion?

Hi Jason so I took a look at FOS Models and they are impressive but unfortunately I live in Calgary, Alberta Canada and a lot of these companies won't ship to Canada because the cost is prohibitive.
I like the premade model idea but what I do is copy the picture and try to build the item out of foam or wood or cardboard out of scratch a bit more work but just the same lots of fun. Do you know where to find old diecast cars of vehicles can you give me a link and maybe do a links page and video of the companies that you buy your various items from. If you could do this it would give a lot of hits to your channel. Again I really like your builds although they are models and not scratch builds.

Where do you buy the detail items such as the hinges and brooms and the old dolly the barrels, or do you make them all. I always appreciate people who leave a list of where to buy items in their comments so as for new people it gives us a chance to find some of this stuff.
Great videos really well done I like that you take time to explain what you are doing not just speed race through the build like some of these people do which I just don't subscribe to and close them down.

what did you use to make the door hinges
I think they are brass. Don’t remember who makes them. You could easily cut them out of plastic or card stock.
