104 Years Old Cooking Stove Restoration - Why Did They Stop Producing Them?

- In this video, I restore an old rusty cooking stove made in France in the 1920s. More about the restoration process: It was very challenging but rewarding, as usual, and I learned a lot about cooking stoves! The little stove was in disrepair when I got it. The fuel tank was damaged entirely and couldn't be used anymore; it had a considerable hole that required a lot of skill and patience to repair, as well as many dents and a missing lid. The inside mechanism was utterly gone, too, and I had to rebuild it from scratch. If you want to learn more about this antique French stove, I encourage you to watch this video. When I saw it, even though I was shocked at how bad it looked, full of dents, bends, rust, and burn! The most challenging part was the tank, which had a wick stuck inside and many holes.
After removing the rust, the parts were painted with heat-resistant paint, and I polished all the beautiful brass parts. At the end of the video, I made a test so you can see how it works! More about the camping/cooking stove: It was manufactured by the famous F. VULIN et Cie, Réchaud à pétrole 'AZUREA,' at the beginning of 19 century. I hope I have caught everything, but if you have any questions, you can comment, and I'll get back to you! Cheers! Johnny.

Hi folks! I hope you will enjoy how this sweet stove turned out! Please let me know what you would like to see me restoring next!? Cheers! Johnny
Would like to see something with resin
Something from the farming zone, old tool that needed to be attached to a horse, or to milk a cow...
Breakfast looks delicious! Restored object even better! Amazing work!❤
Thank you 😋 It was!
First of all Johnny, thank you for saving these relics of the past. Secondly, I appreciate the time ,patience and care that you take with each piece you restore. Lastly, your craftsmanship is above and beyond, and I can tell you take great pride in your work, so bravo to you sir, I applaud you. Thank you for all you do, and I can hardly wait for your next treasure to be resurrected. Cheers from Canada!
Thank you kindly! Glad you like them! 😀
Amazing. People who restore old things to their former glory deserve a special place in this world. Thank you.
Thank you for your kind words!
@@rustyshadesrestoration I concur with his very correct words. I am one of many that are intimmidated by tools and not loosing a screw or nut or wire. And then if you get it appart. You need to remember where in order it goes. IN REVERSE by the way. WOW that sounds daunting.
TY for the channel.
My wife wanted new lamps. I bought a hand painted pair from the 40s and rewired them. They are way better than anything made today
Reminds me of tent camping seventy years ago, with breakfast cooked on a Coleman stove. Everything tasted better! Lovely and useful piece. You have far more skill and patience than most of us.
This is not only a tour de force of craftsmanship; it is a labor of love. The result is magnificent. Imagine the pleasure and pride in the family when this item was introduced to their home!
That's a fascinating rebuild 👍 Amazing that something so old can be made to work again. As always, your care and attention to detail is spot on
Glad you enjoyed it
Amazing that something so worn can be safely remade to work again! That 'magic metal material' that was troweled on is a game changer.
What a darling little camping stove. Great job restoring it.
It really is!
Excellent restoration and honouring the original parts where you could. Kudos!
Glad you liked it!
Wonderful job restoring this rare antique relic. I'm sure it can be worth a lot after you masterfully restored it to a pristine condition. Great work!!
Technical And Creative! Blows me away; thanks.
I love your videos. Sometimes I wish they were longer.
Thank you, Kimberly! I'll make longer ones in the future. My longest, I think, was 35 minutes. Would you watch 1 hour long video?
Quedó increíble 👏🏼
I envy true craftsmen like yourself; I just never had the patience for detail work. I suppose these old stoves were eclipsed by the more convenient Coleman-style camp stoves, which as far as I know are being made the same way to this day.
Hello mister beautiful restoration beautifully restored good job well done
Thank you very much!
Awesome job, Johnny!!!
❤️❤️❤️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
How about a unique item next? Like a really cool toy or gadget?
Thank you! The next one may be some sort of toy if I manage to win the bid 😀
Absolutamente espectacular, precioso y un trabajo magnífico
When they built this thing, they sure never intended that it be taken apart.
Lovely job.
Thank you!
Beautiful work 😃
Thank you
A yummy 😋 project from start to finish!
That little stove could probably tell some tales of days gone by and meals prepared on it and enjoyed by family.
Thanks for confirming the fact that there's nothing you can't repair, restore and reuse.
I LOVE every minute of your videos.
I'm so happy to know that you enjoyed the video. Many many thanks for your support!

Very nice work !! And it works fantastic!!👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Fantastic! I wish I had one of those sand blasters. Everything would be sooooooo clean lol. Xx
What a beautiful job you have done on this lovely stove! I was sure it was beyond repair with all the rust and holes. Can you restore a book press, they are my favourite things? Anyway fantastic restoration.🤗🇦🇺
Thank you. I have already restored a beautiful book press 😀 You can find the video in my video library or playlist. Enjoy watching!
@@rustyshadesrestoration Thanks I will look it up. Love your videos. Cheers from Australia. 🤗🇦🇺

Thank you! Cheers!
Great restoration, it took a lot of work.
Thank you. I worked almost two weeks on it 😀
Complimenti molto bella 🙏👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Grazie mille!!
I like a lot of old stuff because it was usually made much higher quality. This is true today in most fields. The older something is, the better it was built.
But this thing really takes cheap to a whole new level for the time. It's all just thin stamped steel.
Wow that was a lot of work for a small piece... As Hancock would say, Good Job.... Thx for sharing...
Yes it was! Thanks for watching!
Very nice restoration, good looking older stove, great shape for the year.you put lotta effort into redoing it.just keep on doing what you do best and carry on.great video.be safe 😎😎😎👍👍👍
Thank you so much, Tom! 🤗
A most impressive Restoration especially given the severe rusting. Why did they stop making them? As a guess I'm going to say that Kerosene leaves a funny taste on food?
Beautiful restoration! Guessing it's French, and the glass "window" would have originally a piece of Mica.
Hi. I don't know what's looking better. The oven after your great restoration or tasty things at the end of the vid !,😊😊 greetings !
🤗
Absolutely beautiful stove. Unfortunately they stopped producing them because they are considered fire hazards. Just like gas, alcohol, and oil lanterns the stoves would get tipped over and start fires. They are still wonderful for camping and outdoor usage.
It is so satisfying to see your restoration process from start to eggs and ham! beautiful work. what kind of compound are you using to fill the holes?
Thank you! I'm using a hybrid compound - hardener and the hybrid thing (based on aluminum). I bought it in Castorama. If you are based in Europe, you'll know about this shop.
❤❤❤
The cooking reminds me of old The Two Ronnies sketch "Swedish Made Simple"...😂
Man: "F.U.N.E.M."
Waiter: "S.V.F.M."
Man: "F.U.N.E.X."
Waiter: "S.V.F.X."
Finished piece looks great! :)
I've use temperature contrasts to break glass after scoring it. Heat for some seconds with a flame and then straight away to cold water. Snaps perfectly on the scored line. :) I wander if it works with "heat resistant" glass too.
The original red paint in probably powder coating, no? (was there powder coating when they made these? 🤔)
Anyone know what is the metal sheet on top for?
Thanks for the tip. I'll try your method soon. No, it isn't powder-coating 🙂 It is enamel, but it is similar to powder coating these days, just that it is much more durable and "heat resistant." than any other finish.
@@rustyshadesrestoration thanks! :)
Kompliment 👍👍👍
Hi there. You deffinately need to stop using a filler everywhere. Many dents and holes can be fixed with a soilder and flametorch.
😊good“s🎉‼️
Much better if you do the lid in a lathe if you have 😊
I have one, but it is broken for now. I'm waiting for the replacement part. 😀
Why did they stop producing them? Because they didn't know you'd be around to restore them 100 years later, of course. 😊
Nicely done, sir. 👍
Good point! 😄
👍👍👍
Because if they make things that last a long time ,they can't sell you a new one every short time. Planned obsolescence.
🎉🎉🎉
Great videos. What kind of media do you use in your vibrating tumbler?
I'm using aluminium oxide. It works best with rusty screws, but it still takes many, many hours, buy for me is fine, because I can do other things meanwhile.
that would be a bumblebee nest in the tank
The laser was really satisfying, why don’t you use it anymore?
i don't know why but the top of this cook stove kinda reminds me of a bbq
That cloth you pulled out of the burner, did you check it for asbestos?
No, I didn't check it, but I still have it.
Are you sure that stove wasn't used to heat sad irons?
Perhaps it did that too...
Iuhuu!
It was necessary to fill it with alcohol, alcohol does not stink and does not smoke.
Why did they stop producing them? Because a kerosene heater is superior in every way. But they are especially better that when tipped, they auto-extinguish. If this thing is tipped, it's burning the house down. It will spill liquid fuel from the wick holes all over the place. The kerosene heater keeps the fuel in the tank. Only a small amount of fuel is in the part where the wick sits.

You were joking about the lid right?
What do you mean?
mmmm back bacon and eggs!
Here is a video on how to make homemade evaporust. I've done it myself and it is very good and VERY cheap. It is safe to put down the drain. The cost of real evaporust makes it cost prohibitive for large objects.

Old school 3D printing..........
🥃👏👍🥃👏👍🥃👏👍🥃👏👍🥃👏👍🥃👏👍🥃👏👍
And there is another item ruined by metal filler. Repair the holes fine but making it look perfect is removing its originality and history!
I don't do it in such a way every time, but it was necessary this time because the rust pits were too deep because of the tin metal. Also, you can't afford to let them like that on the tank and have holes in it again in two years.
@@rustyshadesrestoration Having restored quite a few items in the past (including cars and bikes) history and originality are everything. I hate it when people remove casting errors etc as to me that removes how it was when new and if its not going to be used and just kept for display then there is no need for it.

I laughed a lot at your copper part soldering, mate. Why 😂😂😂😂
You can do whatever you want, laugh/cry, i don't care; nobody is born with such skills, but we improve by practising and never giving up, and I'm pleased with my progress; I don't care that it doesn't look like the soldering of a guy with ten years of experience or more. I'm not here to impress anybody or tell you I'm better than you are at something; I am here to do my passion and to learn, share and experiment.
Your comment shows that you are very jealous, and you find something to comment on...but the rest doesn't matter to you, like, the fact that the job was done correctly and everything looks and works fine :)
Btw, that's brass, not copper 😉
Perhaps you should try to be a better human by advising us if you are so talented at this, so I'm waiting for your soldiering video classes. Good luck!
@@rustyshadesrestoration I don't care if the job is bad, I'm talking about it being unnecessary. While there is already a stop on the adjustment knob, adding a piece across the bar with solder is a laughing matter.
There is also nothing to laugh about. The copper stopper was necessary. Yes, there is one for spinning the regulator too much, but there was none to keep it at the same level as the other one and not to move freely back and forth. Pay more attention to them.
Another piece of trash, restored, and turned into a treasure.
ewwwww! mouse poop and pee did that stove in can't wait for your magic.🤢
What a sad job
Sad? Why sad? 😆
