Just bought a 7' medium power moderate action Abu Garcia Ike Signature casting rod. It's made of high strained glass instead of graphite (although you can get a graphite version. It comes in several different versions for different situations). Perfect crank bait rod (to me). Parabolic bend. Has a killer finish on it too. Only set me back $130. Worth looking in to imo.

There has never been a fisherman alive who took his first rod, loved fishing, and said to himself, "I don't need any more rods."
So, I think the real question should be "What is the best FIRST rod?" I would love to see a video where you talk about the rods you have bought your kids to bring them up on.
Here's how I plan to introduce my kids (currently 3 & 5)
1) Barbie/Spiderman/Frozen spincaster around 3 feet long. At this age it is all about having fun, not about catching big fish
2) 5'6" Light Ugly Stik with a cheap spinning reel and 10 pound braid. Super easy to learn to cast with & can throw all kinds of small lures sufficiently. My first lures were Worden's Rooster Tails and these rods will work fine for those. I already have 2 of these rods because I learned on them and they are built like a tank.
Once they get to this point, I will slowly teach them to use one each of my rods, including baitcasters, and introduce them to the concept of using the right rod for each lure. Then I will let them choose what their next rod will be based on which of mine they most enjoy using. They will probably end up Jimi-casting just like I do unless they go fishing with friends who fish baitcasters traditionally.
If you are an adult who is new to fishing, I say find a buddy who has a nice arsenal and go fishing with him so you can try some different things. You'll quickly figure out what you want to buy first (and your buddy will not hesitate to give you his opinion)
Then go make a video on it...

I remember getting my first Zebco 33 when I was a kid. Didn’t realize then, but that was the start of me becoming a lifelong fishermen.
@@reeltalkfishing7692 thats funny. Zebco 33 was my first as well. I feel like it's almost impossible to find a fisherman that didn't ever throw a zebco 33. For most it is the first rod and reel they will use.

The medium rod is criminally underrated. They have enough flex for action and enough strength that they can set a big hook. I personally love medium rods. I really like the ugly stik GX2 casting rod the best. It’s a stiffer medium rod but still has plenty of flex to cast lighter baits and still be able to use jerkbaits effectively and also even a Ned rig if you have enough skill.

My favorite "all around" rod is a medium spinning rod. It can't do everything, not even close to it, but it's super versatile. It's easy to throw light swim baits, light jigs, lipless cranks, small spooks and poppers, drops shots, mojo rigs, and it's my favorite for weightless rigs.
I actually just purchased my first ever St.Croix Medium fast and I can definitely tell that the feel is much more medium/moderate lord of good bend I can’t wait to see how it does when there’s an actual fight with a fish. I was struggling because there’s not many actual medium or moderate action rods near me and I love throwing a moving bait like cranks and I was worried that the medium fast would still fall short but after getting one and hearing you confirm that it does the job and does it well was more convincing for me thank you!

Ive got a 7'4" med-hvy glass rod and i can chunk a crappie jig 30yds so there are some exceptions but still major respect man and great vid

My all around best rod is a medium-fast. The Lews carbon fire in a medium fast will rock crank baits to spinner baits.

Gene this is just my two sense but the bait I fish the most is a weightless super fluke. I throw it on a 6-1/2 or a 7 ft MH with a 6.3:1 real and 15-20 lb monofilament. I can throw that fluke as far or farther than most people can throw most other lures such as a Texas rig or spinnerbait or even a 1/2 ounce lipless crankbait so as far as a fluke goes in my experience the MH rod is the way to go. Also I catch a lot of big fish on these flukes and when I set the hook I am driving it home and if I were to be using a medium spinning set up I would 1. Break the line on the hook set. (If that didn't happen then) 2. Not be able to drive a thick 5/0 hook into the fish good enough to be able to land the fish 3. Not be able to handle the fish if it was of any size (over 3-3.5 lbs). This is my two sense as far as flukes go. I know they call you the fluke master but I would just like to say that you may have a little competition on flukes if u look my way. I'm a bank fisherman and I always carry 2 rods. A medium fast action spinning rod and a medium to medium/heavy depending on what lures I plan to use.
I have one medium mod-fast action for crank baits and smaller, moving baits. I use heavy fast-action for soft plastics, frogs and larger moving baits.

glad i found this. All i have is a medium heavy. But I am mostly inshore saltwater anyways. But I have basically settled on getting a medium-medium for my next, because I want to have a rod that I can catch brim and crappie on, and also redfish and speckled trout
I always carry a medium, a medium heavy, and a light or ultra light (for the little sunfish when I'm not getting any bigger bites) ! I also carry both spinning and baitcasting reels.
I run 7ft mf, 6ft med. moderate in my casting. And a 6'6 ultra light and 7ft med fast spinning. Also a ice fishing rod in case I see a carp I'll throw a crawler at. Honestly I tend to throw 7ft medium fast the most with a texes rig for large mouth and 6'6 spinner for smallies with a 3in tube or a craw. It comes down to personal preference and leaning. I'm always leaning and trying somthing new I guarantee I'll have different set up to add next year. Love your videos

Last week, I just purchased a rod/reel combo dedicated to "cranking" - sqaurebills, crank baits, jerk baits, spinner baits and chatter baits
I bought a G. Loomis E6X 845C CBR 7' M/H with mod/fast action rod with a Shimano Citica 200 6.4:1 bait caster with 15lb Seguar Fluorocarbon line
Rod combo #2 is a 7' M/H Fast action Shimano Clarus with a Shimano Curado 50E (6.3:1 gear ratio) with 30 lb braid for top water
Rod combo #3 is a 7' M/H Fast action Shimano Clarus with a Shimano Chronarch CI4+ (7.6:1 gear ratio) with 30 lb braid for jigs and texas rig
Rod combos #4-#6 (finesse fishing) are 7' Medium or Medium Lite ALL Fast action with Shimano Sahara 3500 to 2500 reels; wither fluoro or braid

This makes great sence Gene, A couple days ago i was using a buzz bomber on my st criox heavy rod, with my max pro 5 abu garcia reel, and i could only cast about 20 feet, every cast...... BACKLASH, i was pissed, thanks for the good info and tight lines.

RSLewis I still use a pistol grip rod from way back and sometimes use a round bait casting reel but The gear ratio is 5.4:1 my newer reels top out 8.1
Right, I literally throw a 7ft med hey for everything and do just fine. I throw multiple different applications aswell and have no trouble with Gills, bass, or walleye.
He made it clear that any tod can catch a fish, but there are better options. And that is true. For example you don't want a stiff rod for fishing a ned rig or drop shot with a tiny thin hook that can easily bend, and don't want a lighter rod when you're jigging in heavy cover. You want a stiff rod to muscle them out before they hang you up.
@@blay7263 that's incorrect. Not just any "tod"?... can catch a fish. Stop assuming it's easy to do.
Not arguing, but I threw a weightless worm and an 1/8 oz worm on a shakey head today on a Medium Heavy Fast Action rod with no issues. Seems to work well for me.

Thank you for this video!!! I usually throw 1/4 oz baits and I have a medium/heavy fast action rod and I cannot cast worth a damn with that thing. Literally everybody says I need the medium/heavy, but it simply doesn't work for what I'm trying to use it for and i get pissed off with the lack of distance and backlash i get. This answers all my questions, so thank you!
Med mod fast. You can load it so much better. A toss cast as far as a whip.

I belive this ultimately comes down to the angler's preference. I can bomb a dt-6 on a Dobyns 735 no problem. I rarely lose fish either.
This is what I have been after. It is good looking and durable.

rarely miss fish.
It's more of fine tuning performance. It's not a make it or break it thing. You can get everything done with about 5 rods, but sometimes things add up.

I agree completely. I work at Bass Pro and just about everyone in my department will say the same exact thing. They all say a 7' MH is the best/most universal/only rod you'll ever need. I tell people exactly what you said, a M-ML spinning rod, M casting, and MH casting. It's the only 3 rods you really ever need. Great video Gene.

I've fished with this exact equipment for years. I have a 7 foot medium fast baitcaster, a 7ft 3 medium heavy fast baitcaster and a medium fast spinning rod. I have almost every base covered except heavy flipping and punching but I don't do a lot of that
this intro is way better than the last one!
Light baits/smaller lures and small bass / pan fish / perch , really suit a very light / ultra light for some casual sport fishing is ideal.
You can even use a spin - cast reel out in the open waters. Like a Zebco 33 Classic or a light Daiwa spinning reel set up is OK loading up some nice , light line test .
We call that Finesse - Style fishing.
But, yet Bigger Bass and Lunker Trout hiding away in cover such thick weed beds and heavy structure like log jams - you want a med / heavy outfit set up ideally with a proper Baitcaster Reel - like an ABU Garcia brand for example - 'cause they will pull real hard to get to deep right into the snags and cover and then dive UNDER the boat, when they see finally it.
They are the best reels for Trolling and casting the heavy spinnerbaits, IMO. You can also catch a lot of bass by just trolling around deep diving style crank - baits real slow around any big structure, like a decent rock, any dead tree stumps and so on.
That, is when you need to put on the proper thumb - pressure and that is almost impossible with a real light spinning outfit. They somehow just get off from the lack of control from the angler. We call that approach : Lure - Casting.
Ideally, take two outfits - one, just Ultra Light, and One Medium to Heavy.

Dude I am learning so much more from you I got going on one year fishing I do Inshore fishing more but its knowledge I use I have more medium heavy rod had medium but I broke em so imma get medium for my rapala and yu zuri I use 20 lb braid ....imma make a 10 braid set up abu Garcia combo set up 5.4.1 gear ratio / medium action the Abu Garcia Revo X low profile casting. I tried mono and flouro line I cant stop them dam nest.
I might get some crap for this but up until this past year of always used spinning gear for everything from swim baits to punching
Same here, I just never had the money to invest in more rods/reels. This year I'm investing into more bait casting set ups though.

My daughter catches 1-5 lbers out of our pond on a zebco 33 combo 8lb test line all day long. No sense in high dollar rod and reels but I have a bunch anyways. lol.
true to the bone..and cost is minimal..it comes down to how you put the the worm on the hook..do it right, and they bite longer and the kids get a few caught..or smaller hooks..that helps too..i do like medium rods also..especially for finesse and feeling the small bites..but- med light sucks..unless you target bluegill/crappies...not as ready if you do nail a decent fish..zebco 33 works...gene just telling what is needed for different styles or techniques..fighting through brush does not work on the zebco setup...etc..

1. Power - Medium and Action - Medium Fast ( C.W - 7 to 28g)
2. Power - X heavy and Action - X Fast ( C.W - 7 to 36g)
What are these rods useful for???
I always like to use a medium heavy fast action rod for big spinner baits and buzzbaits, or any other big single hook baits. Don't you need that stiffer rod to get the big thick hook into the fish?
Now for any treble hook baits, i like a more moderate action rod for sure.
Congrats on explaining that were it makes sense. I keep a 7ft med and a 7ft med/hvy. I want to get one heavy rod for jigs. should I go with a 7.3 or a 7.6?

A medium heavy spinning rod may be under utilized too. With a 4000 sized reel and the versatility with 30 pound braid and a wide range of leaders, my 7'6' MH moderate spinning rod is often a better tool than the same rod in bait casting( which I do have and like a lot).

As I am still in high school I found out a system using 2 rods. I use a 6' 8 medium heavy casting rod and then I have a lighter spinning rod. I haven't gotten my new rod since my last one broke. someone stepped on it...

Can I get away with using a medium heavy moderate fast rod for cranking square bills and also other applications like light T-rigs and spinnerbaits. I'm hoping the extra flex at the tip will make it work for short diving cranks but the backbone will give me enough strength for bottom contact fishing. Not asking if it's ideal, just if it can work for now until I add more equipment to my setup.
+kappakumplete Yea that would work just fine. You may loose a little distance on the lighter cranks.

If you are on a budget and could only get one rod. A 7ft medium heavy is then best choice. Nuff said. It's the closest to an all purpose there is.
