Mate. Thanks for helping me out with your video. My 03 VZN167 was getting hot up the mountains then cooling off on the straights. Turns out the fan clutch was devoid of all viscous oil. Followed your vid. Temp gauge didn’t move once on the mountainous stretch of the M1 between Gosford and Sydney. Fan is noticeably louder when driving through the gears, it seems really obvious now, that it wasn’t properly working. It’s videos like this that help out people. What would’ve been $250 was $24 (2 x bottles of oil from Toyota). Legend mate.
Mate, how can you know the viscous is run out of oil? can you test it by hold the fan while spinning? or see it while you turn off the car if its running free for a few spin after you turn it off?

Awesome video cheers mate, just did mine, tip for splitting the halves is chuck 1 or 2 of the screws the other way around from the back (once all screws removed) rotate the halves so the screw holes are covered and use them as a jacking screw. pops off easy as. mine had almost no oil in it ....
Driving home 26 hours from Brisbane in 38 degrees in one of these with a bad fan was one of the most stressful 4 days of my life. Sitting at 80 with the heater fully on at all times. Going about 50-60kmph up hills
Fantastic, thanks for posting this. I've had issues with temperature going up when towing uphill or driving in soft sand. There is so many things to investigate, radiator, fan clutch, termostat... i don't really have much experience with all this... but the fan oil is a great way to start. Can't wait to do it now.
@@TRAV30387 do you mind me asking, I just checked my fan while the car was running, and it was not easy to stop it. It had lot of pull and felt very strong. It was not easy to stop the fan. I could also feel lots of air gushing around the fan. Do you think this is a good indication that the clutch and oil is all ok? Thanks heaps.
Hey mate. The shroud has a set of clips either side so the shroud can split in half. Means you dont have to take the fan off at the same time as the shroud. Makes it wayyyy less fidley
Thanks mate for this vid, I was not sure if I needed 3 bottles or just 2. As im just servicing mine now and the fan seems to move easy but not very easy.
@@MrParker300 Yeah awesome mate good part of the world hear 👌👌 thats for sure and sounds bloody good to me... get over to our Facebook group mate you might like the stuff we do there aswell🍺🍺
The temp gauge on my 120 with the 1KZTE is usually at 40%, but goes up to 50% and stays there when I drive at a higher pace/heavier load. It goes back to 40% when I drive more relaxed. Think this would help?
Just a bit of constructive criticism I would have cleaned out the viscous hub and used both bottles of oil seeing as you them an also on the top radiator hose use new clamps as those Toyota ones are crap once removed the first time but otherwise a good video 👍👍
Cheers Trav. Hope you're keeping well mate - all the best from the UK. 10000 CST worked great in mine compared to the drips of old mystery oil left in there.
Amayama shows me different part numbers for the viscous hub depending on whether the car is equipped with a manual or auto transmission, is there any significant difference between the two (different operating temperatures?)?
Hey Trav, would there be any point in applying a high temp gasket glue around the outside of the seal to prevent future loss of viscous oil? Doesnt look like theirs much edge there to apply it to. Maybe in place of the rubber seal? Or is the fact that it leaks a type of protection perhaps?
@TRAV30387 weirdly, it wasn't that rusty. If anyone else is having this issue just work it by pushing up and down and wiggling left and right it until you feel some play and can get it off.

Thanks Trav really appreciate the vids! I’ll be doing mine this weekend! 👍
No worries mate cheers
Great video, I have found most guys put the oil in the reservoir on the other side that what you did ? Will it work either
just fill the four galleries thats the best way.
What is the maximum dangerous engine temperature?

How do you remove the bolts and keep the fan from turning?
The nuts use a ring spaner and just jam a pry bar in behind to lock it of
@@TRAV30387 thanks for the reply. I’ll give it a go! Soaked the nuts in penetrating oil and will get back at it tomorrow.

Id say the seal is enough in the fan hub but being so old the weep over time puttin a sealant in may make for future removal
Would you know how often this needs to be done?
Depending on the fan oring id check every 12 month's
@@TRAV30387 ok cheers mate
CRAZY how yours just popped off. Mine is stuck so bad if it did come off with the force I'm pulling with It'd slam into the radiator and destroy it.
Id say its rusty

@fuflang just keep working in mate it should pop mabie put some penetrative spray in there and let it soak
Hi Travis , can I commission you to do this for me? I'm in Melbourne
Should you leave the fan on its side so all the oil flows into the reserve? i think you might have added too much
Apreshate the feed back mate tho its advised from toyota to use 2 tubes
Hey trav, where did ya get the 10 blade fan from?
Its standard on a sr5 mate
Hey trav, trying to do this now and the four nuts on the fan won’t crack any tips
They could b just tight soak them in wd 40
