As someone who was single for decades and just recently married for the first time, I offer the following tips and comment: 1st: NEVER EVER let a date pick you up or take you home on the first date. you don't know who you're dealing with and the last thing you want is for someone to know where you live. 2nd: ALWAYS let one of your friends know exactly where you will be for the date, time, his name, etc. , 3rd: for first dates, I had friends meet me at the date location/time and pretend they are having dinner or lunch or whatever. I did this because I wanted my friends to observe his behavior and our interaction. Sometimes when we are on dates, we don't notice what can be obvious to others. Now for my comment: Heather, if you had so many misgivings about the date, why on Earth did you allow him to take you home? Listen to gut. The most important thing on dates these days, especially for first dates, is safety.
I was going to reiterate these exactly. My mom was widowed in 2017 and was dating and it was like we reversed roles. I told her she was naive to what was out there! I was constantly tracking and texting her on date nights just to check in it was exhausting. Glad you found a good one finally!
I am shocked that she let him take her home on the first date. Thank God she is safe now.

Heather, I was curious to get a man's perspective on your dating adventure so i asked my husband. he offered valuable insight and stuff I hadn't thought about. He said that any man who was serious about the date would have honored his intention to call you when he said he would. #2: similarly, if the date was important to him, he would not had "to rally" to get himself ready for the date. If the date was something he was truly interested in doing, he would have stayed home (or rested) the night before so he could be well-rested, showed up on time for the date, taken flowers, etc.. #3: hubby feels your date was pushing the envelope to see how much he could get away with but more importantly, how much you would tolerate, given all the excuses he presented. #4 the fact that even after all his excuses for his untimeliness to show up, not calling to arrange the date until 1 p.m. that afternoon, stating that he had to "rally" because he had a rough night, were signs he was not serious about seeing you on Sunday and was probably looking for YOU to cancel the date. In the end, a man will respect a woman more if she respects herself enough to know what her deal breakers are. And finally, it's not a man's job or in his thought process on the first date to make a woman feel "cherished and valued". Both parties are simply on the date to learn if there's any chance of compatability. After all the tricks (and there are many) men will play, a woman never wants to send signals of being so desperate to see someone that she would tolerate bad behavior. Better luck next time.

Turning 60 soon. Been divorced for 18 years. Loved living alone and, for the past 2 years, had planned to leave FL and move to Spain to enjoy a peaceful, slow European life just working and relaxing. Long story short, last November, I reached out to a mutual friend in Stockholm (I lived there in the 90s) on social media, thinking nothing of it...he's 7,000 miles away. But we hit it off immediately and I'm now in the process of moving back to Sweden. I had given up on dating and was happy being alone and then this happened. It's crazy and amazing and I'm taking this chance with an open mind and an open heart. It took us nearly 60 years to find each other.
He's out there but as they say, it comes when you least expect it.

I went on a first date with a guy who arrived in my town early and texted me asking if we could meet an hour earlier. I was only able meet him a half hour early, and he mentioned several times during the date how I was “fashionably late”. I wasn’t late, he was early…that was my first red flag with him. I spent 2 years with what turned out to be a toxic narcissist…listen to your gut ladies.

Light teal or dark, it is one of my favorite colors. For some reason, it bolsters my confidence. Peach colors cheer me, so I wear it often, even though it is not particularly flattering, now that my blonde is graying (gold turning silver, for sure).

I will occasionally wear jorts I’m a country girl and we spend time at river lots so need to dress down and comfy. After stroke at 47 I got rid of all my heels 😞 although I cannot do a high heel, I can manage a kitten heel for a short duration so I’m extatic they’re on trend!

Heather, Wow! So much to respond to! First, I totally agree! hate the shorts that are Bermuda’s or whatever they are called. SO FRUMPY!! Things like that do not look stylish on woman our age. It looks like we don’t know what we are doing! And I feel like cardigans can easily fit into that same category. The cropped grey was very pretty and would look great in the fall too. Loved everything else you wore, the Frame short suit was fabulous. I have always loved a great short suit- my favorites are Veronica Beard. Timeless. Chic. Sexy without being trashy or inappropriate for our age.
Now on to the dating! The guy was selfish and the only reason his apology was two paragraphs long was because his ego is HUGE and he couldn’t stand the idea of this gorgeous woman not thinking he’s the greatest since sliced bread. NO THANK YOU. Next time, trust your gut from the beginning. Old habits die hard my friend. Don’t beat yourself up in any way- next time do better. When we know better, we are under spiritual obligation (to ourselves) to do better. Love you 😘

Your Bumble dating story is very much a parallel to my gorgeous 26 yo daughter's recent experience on Tinder. She just graduated college, moved to cross-country to start her new six-figure career and trying to meet up with guys who are 3 - 7 yo older, same or more pay range. Lots of guys want to text for days/weeks before they get around to asking for a real meet-up date, then they're "Let's get together this weekend" but don't get specific about day/time, then give delay excuses. She's young, slim, fit, funny, gorgeous and makes good money - what is wrong with men today??? It's like way too many don't know how to be men. Or they're too eager to be someone they aren't, not sincere about anything coming out of their mouths. I told her to apply two new rules of thumb: 1) Limit the texting/phone to two maximum, if he doesn't ask you for a proper date after the second chat-up, stop responding or tell him meet-up or shut up. 2) Make a list of personality traits that are most important to her, pick three and if he doesn't have at least those, sayonora, dude.
Yeah, Heather, you know I love you and have been with you for years…you were right when you first said no…don’t slip back into the getting abused stuff….i was getting anxious all through your story until the end…this guy sucks in that he thinks you are just waiting there all day Sunday till he calls! Regarding dating, the mistakes you see in dating multiply that single mistake for example times 10 years of marriage and that’s what you will have lived with in that one area. Where as, if they are bringing benefits in that area and other areas, you have those to enjoy.

Heather, I'm a Baby Boomer but look young for my age.
I have a black evening gown that is off the shoulder with straps (I can wear a regular black bra). Is this considered "cold shoulder" so therefore out of fashion? I need the straps and I look good in the gown. The *sleeves* are created by the band from the off the shoulder design.
