On my 13th birthday, my French Grandmother took me into the city and to a French beauty counter. She bought me my first cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. At 16, she started paying for my six weekly visit to the beautician for a facial. Her mantra was "gorgeous skin shines beauty". It has paid off in that I have constantly been complimented on my "beautiful skin" and truthfully I have never had to wear much makeup. On that subject, she advised me mascara and lipstick only ..... You should never leave a pillowcase full of your makeup after a night of passion! She put me into French lingerie at 16 .... Everything should match ..... Buy a bra? Then buy two knickers to match. Hand wash your undies. Perfume? Expensive and layer. Make it your signature ..... And yes, you can leave a spray of that on his pillow 😉
She was very elegant and I am so grateful for her advice. I still prefer matching shoes and bag! Her other big issue was weight. Keep it low. She was incredibly precise on eating. She would make me consomme (bone broth) and insist that I had a small cup before eating my main meal .... Nutritious and filling!
Great piece ..... Very much enjoyed!

Not every French women above 50 looks like Inès de la Fressange or Sophie Marceau. They can also be full bodied and/or on the heavier side. What set them apart IMO is their acceptance that everyone age and it's always best to make the best with what you have. They also know that indulgence is good for the soul when it's done once in a while, not everyday. Living in Europe also means you get to be more active because you need to walk more so that takes care of the daily exercise . Para-pharmacy products are of top quality and priced democratically. They dress neatly with functionality in mind and prefer to have une bonne mine than a face full of makeup. These common sense practices come across as chic and put together because they feel effortless yet disciplined.

I'm french, I agree that they put less make up or no make up and in many cases put a bit more effort into their skin care. But these examples in the video are celebrities who still have treatments/ surgeries. As far as weight, not everyone is slim in my country or well dressed. One thing i would say is they are more overall into simplicity in comparison to the UK which is more bold and extravagant in terms of style and make up. In some cases they also have a healthier lifestyle if they can stay away fron the sun and cigarettes 😂. I like the simplicity of the french, but i also like a bit of boldness and extravagance at times, it' s fun.

It's scary to see French women in their underwear. Skeletons with flabby skin. Sophie Marceau is part Italian, fyi.

Absolutely. However, years after menopause, even skinny women who regularly exercise can get stubborn belly and back fat, spider veins, cellulite, and crepey skin. The hands and neck show aging first. Women in their late 60s and 70s get the shock of their lives when they see themselves in the reverse camera of their cell phones. Embracing inevitable aging and keeping a positive attitude is helpful. Too many older women are angry, bitter, and deeply depressed, as if they have given up on life and living. Never give up. Keep going as long as possible.

I’m thrilled to be a healthy 64-year old woman and don’t mind looking like one. It’s natural, easy (except for the hot flashes) and it has its advantages, no periods or pregnancy worries, no stress, no having to shave legs, etc. I very nearly died of an infectious disease at age 46, so every day of life is a precious gift! What’s a few inches on the waist or some wrinkles? They’re just not important, only health, family and self-fulfillment are. We Americans do have a youth-worshipping culture, sadly, perpetuated by women who can’t accept their aging, as well as men who expect all women to look like 18-year olds forever. Retirement years are a wonderful period of life, enjoy it. It helps not to put all one’s eggs in the looks basket. If that’s all a woman values about herself there won’t be anything left when that goes, as it will, eventually.

I agree wholehearted with your comment…it is real and wise. But what American women are experiencing so aggressively for a long time is partly coming from the beauty industry, which is now spreading to the rest of the world. I believe this pressure has existed forever, but it has been exacerbated to a point of no return. Just recently I saw a latin woman who went to South Korea for a facelift and come back as a caricature of a manga, (100% another person)

There is something so comforting about growing older to me. My kids are grown, and now that I’m 65 I have a love for myself that I couldn’t appreciate until I got to my 50’s. I have great genetics from my Spanish father & Mexican mother. My grandfather was French as well. I don’t look 65. But I don’t drink, smoke, eat lots of fresh food and grew up with parents that shopped for fresh produce and healthy meals. I weigh 120 lbs and love my life & welcome age. I do what I want go have dinner & to cafes with my daughter. And yes. Dress well. My mother & my mother dressed elegantly. Love your age & your body.

I am a 70 year old Australian woman. I visited Paris for my 50th, birthday and have never had so much attention from men in my life. I initially thought it was because I was blonde, and then I thought it was my easy going Aussie attitude. Aussie singer, Kyle Minogue was popular in France at that time. Don't get me wrong, Ive always been considered attractive, but the french men put me on another level. Now I am 70, I regularly get told how youthful I look. I put it down to genetics, staying out of sun, even though I am Aussie, and also being vegetarian for 25 years.

I wouldn't say Madonna represents the entire lot of women outside France haha I srsly believe that I have tried almost everything to look younger + delay aging as much as possible, anything from face exercises, vitamin C serum, Fraxel, collagen supplements and of course Retin A (7 years straight), home devices and what not. However, nothing made any real difference compared to the high-quality derma pen I purchased for around 100 bucks. Within 3 months of use, my skin has improved DRAMATICALLY. I don't look like I'm 18 again, but definitely not 44 either. My fine lines have disappeared completely, and my nasolabial folds are way less are nonexist (Never had jowls though). People often underestimate the power of wounding and the revolutionary effects it can have on the skin and instead spending thousands on useless treatments like Botox/fillers which can look unnatural over time due to muscle loss, or fillers due to tissue displacement.

First of all, American celebrity culture is not representative of normal people. The Kardashians et al. does NOT reflect most American women. Secondly, the U.S. is a huge country with people who have descended from extremely diverse backgrounds, so all of us look entirely different. Furthermore, there are major regional differences when it comes to fashion and beauty approaches. Women in New York, LA, Dallas, Miami, etc. have very different looks. Also, there are huge differences between urban, suburban and rural looks outside of heavily populated areas, too. Furthermore, the kinds of food we cook often reflect our vast ethnic diversity. There is no one type of American anything.

les États Unis - healthy diet, plenty of water, exercise, high quality products, less is more, age with acceptance and confidence. I spent quite a bit of time in France last year and didn't notice a higher percentage of women looking particularly youthful or sleek and there were just as many frumpy ones as I see anywhere. I saw just as many women there wearing clothing that was age inappropriate or very unflattering as I do here, the only difference being they were doing so with confidence because they're French, haha. This reminds me of the whole French women don't get fat myth that went around in the 90s. There are beautiful, healthy, chic women everywhere and I applaud them all!

In my opinion the point here is about the public image that French celebrities choose to give . They seem very natural even if there is a big work on that (body, skin, hair care). On the other hand there is a way coming from other part of the world that pushes women to use heavy make up, counturing, big lips, etc . This heavy treatments are used even by young girls in their 20s and dont benefit femininity. So the French style of stars is more charming because of their choice, apart from genes .

It is hard to determine what the right combination of techniques or practices is for any particular individual. In my opinion, avoiding an animal-heavy diet, hydrating, exercising, using water and not soap on our skin, keeping our weight down are the keys to aging well. Dressing well is a help. As for Botox, I think that is a huge gamble, given the absence of longitudinal valid studies on its side effects when injected into the skin (especially so close to the brain, eyes, etc.) and I will not do it. Clean, healthy, slim, happy -- it all helps.

I am glad I am Asian so as I age it is fine to look more like grandma hahaha. Asians, on average, tend to see aging as being more wise and experienced (even though many are not so wise hehehe). Now that I am nearing 60, I am not afraid to look like a grandma because younger people in my country are more helpful because I am old. Of course, the stylish old ladies are admired by people all around them here but if one looks like a dowdy grandma, it is also fine.

Yes, all this advice about chic and stylishness as we age - it's very nice, and reminders not to let oneself go are always useful, but I agree "it is fine to look like grandma." I remember my grandmothers - always nicely dressed - soft, cotton dresses with shawl collars and maybe a brooch - they exuded gentleness, had a maternal softness. The last thing they were was about show, whether seemingly effortless or not - enough that they were sweet-smelling, well-kept and carefully neat. Obsessions with the right flare-legged jeans, the right cardigan, the right shoe and the edgy haircuts would have been unthinkable. For them, indispensable to Secret #9 (slowing down) would have been taking a walk with their beloved grandchildren who were not the least judgmental about a few extra pounds, facial lines or gray hair.

I find French women, especially Parisian women to be much more appearance conscious than say American, British, German, Dutch, and Scandinavian women. They like to give off this image of looking natural, effortless, practical yet elegant and chic for that classic and timeless look, but I find them often very contradictory and judgmental. They tend to be very appearance focused like Italian, Russian, Korean, Chinese, and Lebanese women. Who cares if you are a bit chubby, love excessive makeup, big hair, bold colors, etc. Do whatever makes you happy. What really shines through your style is your personality and energy you give off. Look at Dolly Parton, for example. A wrecked mess visually, but such a charming and darling woman, that who can't help fall in love with that effervescent energy.

When I got my first pimple, my mother had me at the dermatologist. He recommended that I use Cetaphil Cleanser every evening after removing any make up (I was only allowed mascara and tinted lip gloss at 14), no toner ever, just good rinsing with lukewarm water and a water based moisturizer day and night, and in the morning a few splashes of lukewarm water and a very light rub of a soft face cloth, always pat ALL skin dry, apply sunscreen allow to absorb for about 5 minutes then moisturizer and then make up. He also cautioned me about diet: lots of water, no soda or sugary drinks, quality meat and broths, lots of fresh fruit and veggies and no fried or greasy food and if I am tempted then no more than once a week and most importantly to exercise daily as in weights and walking. That was 48 years ago, I have great skin (thanks DNA) with fine eye wrinkles, slight jowls, and some marionette lines at 62 but I am absolutely ok with all that because it shows I have lived my life. Yes, I wear some make up, a little cream foundation I put from my nose and feather out to cover natural redness there and even out my skin tone, fill in my brows, a bit of peach eye shadow on my lids and mascara after I curl them and a tinted lip balm, that’s it. No rubbing my skin as I cleanse it, not hot showers just warm or body temperature (I dislike saunas and hot tubs) and I get a facial every 6 weeks. I am American and the majority of women do not attempt to look or follow the Madonna’s or Kardashian’s caricature surgeries or injections or make up, it’s simply not realistic to every day life and I feel so sorry for those young to old women who do follow them.

I still can't believe how they look like, looks like scam. But this is really great. French women look slimmer over all, they are less voluptuous in general, at least until they are older. .Many times, they appear slimmer because of smoking. I got a Swedish bf and he loves plump women with curves, and a friend of mine from LA has quite wide hips and thick legs, and her German bf loves it, he says in Germany it's not so common for younger women to be curvaceous and full. Actually, how we feel is the most important thing. Accepting our shape and don't listen to bs about what's best, but living as we like. My mother took me to a dermatologist and he told me about a new product called sunscreen and told me to use it every day even in winter. I swore I would and as a side note he told me it will avoid getting wrinkles as I got older. I am glad I listened to him!

If French women embrace aging, why do so many dye their hair? I would think they would accept silver hair and not fight it.

I don't believe French women look younger, but they are better maintained, skin, hair nails, and moderate diet. They dress to suit their shape, avoid "trends", and favor quality over quantity while remaining current

When I lived in Paris I was stunned to see how obsessed the French woman are to be thin and have a very dark tan. And I’m from the beach in S Ca 😮

I live in Normandy - here, every woman over 40 has short hair, dyed red. It's like a uniform. We Brits stand out because we wear our hair much longer.

This woman preaches that we should accept aging while boasting that people tell her that she looks 10 years younger. Also, going through such elaborate and time/money consuming skin care routine hardly sits well with 'accepting' aging😂

I think it’s as simple as French women are self possessed.
Although that’s a lot less interesting as far as a video goes, and a LOT harder to teach.
It’s not that other women from other countries can’t have the same aura but it’s not as rewarded in other countries.
However, attractive women all around the world share this trait.

J’ai découvert que j’étais plus française qu’égyptienne quand je me suis coupée les cheveux à mon 40ans. Je déteste aussi le maquillage mais j’investis beaucoup dans les traitements du soin. Je reste active et j’adore la lenteur. 🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤

Nah, Egyptian women are stunning. They have gorgeous clear skin and beautiful falls of hair, large eyes with long lashes . Very much more beautiful than French women at all ages. Really, in France the beauties are all Arabic women.

Stop pretending French women aka French actresses look naturally younger. Come on now! Stop the cap. They are truly elegant and classier than the average Western woman, but honey they are just better at hiding their surgical procedures. The average French woman is aging like everyone else, the French actresses however are just more subtle with botox and fillers.

It seems that all these French women you show here have beautiful thick hair, short or long, even over 50. What's their secret? I guess all that you talked about here. Great video.

Not all of us look young. Though a good trick is that we are physically active (we walk or bike everywhere), we eat well and according to our needs, we take care of our health, we don’t overwork ourselves and mostly we have good genetics. My mom is 65 and you’ll think she’s in her early 50s. My oldest sister is turning 45 and she looks 30. My other sister and I are 37 and 29 and we look 20. We have good genetics. We don’t smoke or drink alcohol even though it’s very common in France. Stress also has a lot to do with oxydation and aging.

I am not a French woman and I never wear foundation, very little or no makeup. I am almost 62 and I look much younger. The skin care is the key, and not wearing old age clothes. I was born in Europe, living in Canada now. Btw, I love your video, very informative.
