I love that every VGC video has to have an over enthused 2000’s commercial esque title to help with garnering views. “This move makes Hydrapple broken! But that’s not all! If you call now!”
I recently saw a hydrapple next to a skill swap, trick room, hypnosis Malamar, giving it contrary, and it goes hard with leaf storm and Draco meteor, and then super sweet procs twice, making malamar’s hypnosis 100%. I tried it out and it’s pretty fun. Not sure how competitively viable it would actually be, but I enjoyed playing it.
In open team sheet? Not very, I imagine, two turns of setup for the strat means all you have to do is knock out that Malamar asap. Smn like Urshifu Rapid could probably do it I imagine, plus Aqua Jet for priority. Still, I like to think it could work! I’m definitely thinking of building a and trying it for myself. Bc really, with Contrary given to it Hydrapple is basically Serperior with extra bulk, dragon typing, starting off a whopping 120 sp Atk instead of a meagre like, 80, on the other side of the speed spectrum. Edit: Just found a teampaste someone’s already built, gonna give it a spin methinks. I was already thinking Incineroar and Amoonguss would be decent partners
I really want to try some serene grace skill swap team with this guy, just sounds endlessly RNG and I'm here for it EDIT: Apparently it's not coded to work with serene grace my disappointment is immeasurable
Lol I know that it's 30% for balance, but the idea of a Hydrapple just FIRIN MAH LAZOR like it's 2008 at the enemy mon for 400 power (stab ofc) is just too amazing
I like to think of it as simply the Hydrapple that commands the others is much stronger, so even the four other heads combined only equal what it can do.
Maybe some of the tume 2 heads cooperate and sometimes more. Maybe base is 80 always but then it can be +40 per head. Capping at 240. A dragon type magnitude. With better chanses for strong damage.
If/when we get evolutions for Flapple and Appletun in Gen 10, what do you think they would be like? For example, for Appletun, they could replace Gluttony with Well-Baked Body.
I would like if they were all different types of dragons from throughout mythology, maybe flapple would be an amphiptere (serpentine dragon with wings and no other limbs) and appletun would be a tarasque (turtle dragon hybrid thing)
I think Hydrapple is super under explored. It 4x resists both of Ogerpon Wellspring's STABs, doesn't care about Urshifu's Surging Strikes or Iron Hand's Wild Charge, and there are like three relevant ice types in the form (realistically two, but A. Ninetales is also super underexplored rn.) Yeah it's weak to Flutter Mane's D Gleam and Moonblast, but you can tera if you need to and that weakness can be further covered by partners. Personally I think people need to stop comparing it to Amoongus just because it's bulky and has regenerator. They do separate things; Amoongus is an annoying wall that you need to be prepared for otherwise it'll sleep half your team, heal its partner, and redirect everything. Hydrapple on the other hand can just hit with two STAB nukes in Leaf Storm and Draco Meteor and then just switch out and gain back any chip it took like nothing happened. A potentially interesting core could be Palafin, Hydrapple, and Incineroar. Though who knows how good it would wind up being.
Hmmm... under rainbow terrain, this would be even stronger. You'd need a fire-water-grass trio in your team to pull it off, too, with hydrapple being the grass.
Rainbow Terrain would not boost its chance to double damage unfortunately, as it is not coded as a secondary effect (same for Serene Grace, and Sheer Force does not interact with it at all). The plus side is that Covert Cloak does not block the double damage potential either
I just want to say thank you for being beginner friendly constantly. I’m still learning and learning what a “bump” means is massive and so helpful. Thank you!
I think Milotic would be a great partner for Hydrapple and a combo I will probably try out when the new rules et finally starts. My reasoning is that they no only compliment each other in typing but Milotic is an actual useful Hypnosis user due to competitive, which also has access to other support moves that aren't 100% accurate like Icy Wind and Muddy Water (If I'm not confusing learnsets). Milotic also gets access to Dragon Cheer which will help alleviate the Sp.Att drops from Leaf Storms and Draco a lot. I dunno how much the Speed control from Icy Wind will help since it is REALLY slow, but you should be able to get some more favorable match ups
You might have seen this already, but there's a really fun strategy i've seen with supersweet syrup draco meteor hydrapple paired with contrary skill swap malamar. Using skill swap on hydrapple gives malamar supersweet syrup and causes it to activate twice, so now your opponents are at -2 evasiveness. Now if hydrapple uses draco meteor he will get boosted special attack. But wait, there's more! If you then use skill swap onto your opponents, supersweet syrup will activate again, and because hydrapple has contrary now, it gains +1 in evasiveness.
I think this mon actually is gonna go crazy on restricted sun teams, since what it'll end up doing is make Venusaur sleep powder 100% accurate while it is also the fastest thing on the field
I’ve been using venu and it’s kinda mid now with most fast paradox Pokémon with booster being able to outspeed you no matter what. Running sun also boosts the opposing paradox mons so you gotta play carefully around it. Sun is strong, especially with raging bolt and the other new proto guys, but idk if venu is that guy anymore.
I saw a twitter video where he placed a Hydrapple next to contrary malimar. Malimar skill swapped into the hydrapple so the opponents now have -2 evasion so Malimar can hit its hypnosis. It also gives Hydrapple Contrary so you can go for Dracos and get a plus 2 off of them. Pretty gimmicky, but funny concept.
That's a neat showcase! Really nice sets! ^^ If it's alright to say, I thought Freezai's Contrary Skill Swap team was really cool for Hydrapple! (If me talking about another youtuber upsets you, I understand and will delete this comment if you want, just thought it'd be nice to mention this way to play Hydrapple.)
If it wasen't for Fickle Beam I would love this guy. He would be a way to mitigate rng with supersweet syrup... Then they went and gave it a move that is usually dragon pulse but sometimes it's actually roar of time haha. Not to mention... there is the insane high role potential of the empowered fickle beam crit; which game freak seemingly wants you to go for by planting the idea in your head with dragon cheer as it's evo requirement. (I know dragon cheer is ally only but you get what I mean) That all aside I love the tera water set in smogon singles since it bluffs hydro pump. Also I suppose in-game doubles allows bluffing aswell.
Hydr apple gets access to sweet scent which lowers evasion 2 stages on command vs once per battle on entry, making moves like possibly even a Gouging Fire with Dragon Rush and Stone Edge consistent high damage options AND keep regenerator on the apple
Hell yeah, the hydrapple I built for the dlc has the exact same move set as the second one you showed Gastrodon is exactly what I had in mind. It’s fun lol
bug dragon might be better typing or not but hydrapple could’ve made sense to be one. There’s multiple worms in the apple and the main one looks dragon like. Bug/dragon isn’t 4x weak to ice and loses the poison weakness but gains the rock flying ice fairy and dragon for 2x super effective, you lose the grass spore immunity but terra grass would fix that so bug dragon could work
I dont love the idea of using leafstorm and draco, because you essentially HAVE to switch the guy out, and youre not running regenerator because youre working off super sweet syrup
Theres a youtuber called foofootoo i saw paired it with a Malamar to skill swap Hydrapple Contrary, also you get a second evasion drop as Malamar gets supersweet syrup
I really want to see fickle beams all out attack hit a crit but it’s a 1.8% chance, and I doubt it’ll happen enough for it to be something to worry about in competitive
Ngl for as useful as supersweet syrup's evasion drop is, the fact that it only procs once per battle really makes me not want to use it. Switching isn't nearly as common in doubles and there are enough situations that I can see why its useful, but in situations where your opponents strategy has switching built into it it just bothers me
Serene Grace boosts the secondary effects of moves, which is technically not what Fickle Beam's chance to double dmg is since it's not an actual effect (such as status, stat changes, flinch, etc) The plus side is if it did work how you wanted anything with Shield Dust or holding a Covert Cloak would be immune to the random nuking, which is not the case
I’d be interested to see how an assault vest kingambit and hydrapple would pair under trick room. Self target syrup bomb and rack up defiant boosts for three turns while you get slower. I’m not sure how confident I am about its effectiveness and taking a special attack from a base 120 mon, but could be fun for casual
I have a small question. There was already an attempt of heightening the chance of the doubled power Fickle Beam by putting Serene Grace on Hydrapple, however, that didn't work because that didn't count as a seconday effect. So... would putting Sheer Force on Hydrapple work and still let Fickle Beam release their powerful blast?
