I'm an experienced GB level 2 coach. I totally agree with all of the points you raised. That was really well presented and illustrated.
Thank you! I really appreciate that!
You can tell someone is good at a thing when they do it well, you can tell someone is smart at what they do when they can break it down to you perfectly, good job using the camera angle.
Thank you for the kind words! I appreciate it!
I'm a starter into archery. Saw this video and my life changed! Thanks! Greetings from Nicaragua 🇳🇮
I'm an experienced archer and found this very useful as it's surprisingly easy to suddenly go wonky! Thank you!
Great to hear!
I've been shooting field with my 16 year old son for about six months now, and we're guilty of every one of these mistakes. After watching your video, talking to each other about our forms and putting it into practice, the difference is unbelievable. Thank you very much :)
Wow, thanks - comments like these make me excited about teaching others archery!
As an instructor of many years it still amazes me that everything Tara says 100% true, where ever you go. There's something natural about archery that people do instinctively and yet they also instinctively do some or all of these things incorrectly. Is some of it copying theatrical/movie archery that's done for show, that's my guess. Great video that covers all the gems of teaching a new starter.
Mr.Foster here,on our second date I look my wife to dinner and then to an indoor archery range where she soundly thrashed me.that was 54 years ago.Loved your video and I subscribed. And I learned some great things Thanks.
Loved that archery was your first date with your wife of 54 years! Great story - especially that she beat you :) Thanks for sharing and thanks for subscribing! Hope to bring more quality videos to everyone!
One thing I learned was to draw and push push the bow forward at the same time as I setup for the shot.
I committed all these mistakes when I learnt archery in the very beginning! I really love this video, cause I now understand the ways to avoid these mistakes! You are my best coach!😊
I've been shooting for a
few years now. But always nice to see and remind myself of the basics. Thanks Tara for taking the time to make this video. I am sure it will help beginner archers immensely, even intermediate archers to some extent.
Thank you for watching!
Thank you very much for this extremely educational video. Plus it looks great too! I'm going to learn archery from a horse on Sunday, so first picking up my archery skills from the ground is not an unnecessary luxury. Looking at your tips really makes me want to start shooting again. I am sure that your advice will help me improve by leaps and bounds. You're an inspiration!
As a beginnwr archer at 81years[bucket goal], and having viewed many "how" techniques from many "UA-cam" experienced archers, this has got to be the MOST structured and comprehensive beginner tutorial presentation so far!! Give it a view, endorse it if you agree and encourage the beginner archer to review it as many times as is neccesary for continual improvemnt, success and enjoyment of the sport!
your form looks the most natural from any video ive seen so far!! you explain things very professionally and in an easy way to remember and understand! youve earned a subscriber!
Tyle czasu szukałem prostego i dobrego poradnika. Zanalazłem...bardzo mi się podoba...
What a GREAT video! Not only the subject matter, but the production (lighting, sound, focus, camera position) was 100% professional. Very, VERY well done!
Wow, thanks! Glad you are enjoying! Motivates me to continue making videos better - thank you for that!
Coach Tera, so glad to find your teaching. I agree with all the compliments from other viewers. Looking forward to see more production. I am 68 and picking up recurve again after 46 years.
I seems to shoot better without sight. The brain seems to tell me where to aim and it was right. I am sure you will talk about this one day.
You are an instinctive shooter! I grew up shooting sights with my olympic recurve bow - which is why I lean towards GAP shooting - gives me a sight LOL I can always make a video explaining your style though! Thanks for the idea!

Great video Tara. I've always loved traditional archery but have not been able to practice my archery in many years. So I'm basically starting from scratch and appreciate the tips displayed in this video. I'll be looking at your other videos for more instruction and advice on how to enjoy my archery hobby.
Awesome! Welcome back. Let me know if you have any questions!
SAme here. I'm starting back at if after over 40 years.
I just found your channel and subscribed. You have great information. I've been shooting a longbow for over 20 years. I had an accident 6 years ago where I broke my back. I am now going to have to re-learn to shoot, this time I'll have to switch over to shooting left handed so I can fix all my problems. Thank you for your hard work.
i'm about to start this hobby and these were such helpful tips! i will keep it all in mind when i go to the range this week.
Glad it was helpful! Good luck at the range! I hope it helps!
Greetings from Georgia. So glad I found you here before I buy my first bow. Have a great weekend my friend.
Thank you!!! Glad I could help you!
Thank you very much Tara, I am a beginner & your explanations are very very relevant.
Thank You Tara. I am not a young person but I am new to archery and your advices are very valuable to me. Thank You again. I will watch all your videos. Greetings from Europe. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

This is gold! Glad I found this, just starting to take interest again. Haven’t shot since I was a teen. Great instruction 👏
Thank you!
Thank you!
Thank you so much! I just got my first bow to start enjoying this hobby and your Video Is the best out there! I have not shot yet so I'll watch a couple more times before I start. Fantastic Teacher!
Thank you! Really appreciate your encouraging message!
Very informative. I never shoot a bow in my life and found your video here that will help me understand and avoid a lot of mistakes when practicing my first bow. Thanks
Wow! Thanks for the message - made my day as a coach!
Love your videos. Have not shot since i was a kid in camp. I now have grandkids and wanted to introduce them to archery and ended up reawakening a passion in myself. Your videos helped. Your awesome
So glad to hear this! Working on videos geared towards kids getting into the sport!
The most helpful video for beginners that I've seen. Thank you!
I'm so glad you found this video helpful! Thanks for sharing!
The Olympic gold medal winning coach who taught my daughter reckoned the key to shoulder position was reaching towards the target with the bow arm. Mr Lee was Korean and used to say "Jodi muss reach always muss reach" she was a long way from a beginner being the number one for her age in the country, but it still applied. My other thought is get a finger tab on, because there is a risk of nerve damage to the fingertips, especially in young archers. I held Archery Australia level 2 and this was drummed into us on the coaches courses. I have no other issues and your explanations are nice and clear,s o good work. That basic set up with the low shoulder is so important in injury prevention.
Really helpful video - thank you so much. Clear, concise and to the point...s! Went to my first archery lesson last week in the UK and was the oldest female in the group by at least 20years! I don't have my own bow to practice but just watching this and practicing without a bow helped to reinforce what I had learned. Many thanks.
Glad it helped!
Your video was amazingly clear and to the point. I can't think of one way to improve on it.
You have a delightful personality that makes the video pleasant to watch.
I'm one of the instructors of the youth for our church. We have a club we call, "Pathfinders". Scouts are a bit like us but we include boys and girls so whole families can go on our trips together. Sometimes to a zoo, or museum, other times camping to study nature. Oft times we will have mom or dad be counselor for other kids so they get a break. It actually works!
I found your video while searching as I will be teaching the archery honor to our kids tomorrow and thought it wise to brush up. Your video is so good, I'm planning to show it to the kids.
The youth get a patch they can display on a sash after completion of an honor. Boy and girl scouts are very similar in that way. I say similar because our church leaders organized a youth club about the same year Boy Scouts came to America. I was a boy scout all my younger years and greatly appreciate the privilege to have been a scout. I didn't know of my current church until 1969. I was pleasantly surprised they had a youth club similar to the Boy scouts I had enjoyed.
To earn the basic honor our youth must identify all the parts of bow and arrow and show they can safely string a bow.
At 60 feet they must score 40 points on a 2 foot target at 60 feet with 30 arrows. The requirements were intended to make it possible for youth to at least earn the basic honor in a reasonable amount of time with practice. Make something too hard and kids get frustrated.
The advanced honor allows them to add a star shaped silver pin to the patch. For that they must score 140 points on 2 foot target at 60 feet with 30 arrows, or for outdoor archery they must score 200 points on 4 foot target at 100 feet.
My experience has been it is harder for beginners to get the required points on the four foot target due to the greater distance. A small error on release is magnified into large error on the more distant target.
This will be the fourth time I have taught archery to youth in our church. I have seen numerous kids brought to church in a carrier shortly after birth. They grew up and I recently began attending weddings for them. We now have a new batch coming up, it is so rewarding to see the shine on their face when they realize they have earned something they had to work for. I suppose in a few years my "kids" will be bringing their own new born to church in a carrier just as they were when I first saw them.
I was able to create arm guards using vinyl I bought at Joann's Fabric store. I sewed elastic and velcro strips to the vinyl, it worked amazingly well and cost a fraction of buying 12 arm guards. Now I need to dig through the storage boxes and find all the archery gear. Many thanks for this amazing video.
Thank you for this message! I am happy to hear about the basic honor badge. I think that is so rewarding to make the scores more attainable for all ages and skill levels through the pathfinders organization! I am so happy we can all keep the sport alive with the younger generations! Reach out if you ever have any questions! Good luck on your class tomorrow!
Thanks for sharing you story, what great work you do.
I feel like an evesdropper...lol.
coach tara i just wanted to thank you for your videos. more than half my arrows were going over the target until i saw one of your videos about finger placement wearing a glove. i believe that my glove was touching the nock before release. now either only one or no arrows go over the target. i'm glad i found you. thank you!!!
Wow! Love hearing this! Thanks for sharing! Happy Shooting!
Good Advice, it still makes me smile watching old films of Fred Bear the grandfather of modern archery, he did so many things wrong according to archers of today, full finger grip of the riser, not much if any follow through, but yet he made it work.
For your information Fred Bear was a right handed shooter who lost a finger on his right hand. He had to switch and become a left handed shooter. He also won a lot of championships, but most importantly she is teaching you target archery stance and form where Fred was a hunter there is a big difference
I'm not a beginner but it's no harm to be reminded of the basics.
Hi Tara Adam here, in one of your recent videos you showed us your followers how to keep the arrow from falling off the rest. Thanks to your tips and some constant practice I can tell you that my shooting has gotten much better over the last few weeks, thanks so much for your imput and for taking the time to respond. Oh yes and greetings from Mexico!
That makes my heart so happy that I am helping others get better! Thanks for letting me know this! Let me know if you have any video ideas!
I'm 69 and couldnt master my cheap chinese 40lb take down bow properly.
Sometimes starting from scratch explains what pros state as the obvious but never properly explain.
Thanks tons, I've just been back to kindy archery class, and learnt again.
I bought a 40-70lb compound bow a year ago that I'm doing pretty good with.
Very informative thanks again.
Liked and subbd.
Outback Australia here.
Welcome back! Thanks for watching!
This was great-A lot of good information and examples! Very helpful !
Thank you!
Really comprehensive, perfect explanation!
Glad it was helpful!
❤tq.nice explain
You make want to get back into bending a bow.. its been 30 plus years but as you were going through those 19 items .. yep did that ..yep did ghat.. its muscle memory.. i still have my old compound i used to go hunt with and 3d targets or indoor shooting..
For any one who doesnot shoot but wants to learn really important to find an archery class or range or soneone tgat shhot ghat will show you the ropes..
It's a lot of fun.. you dont have to pull the biggest bow orcdraw weight . Find an easy puller to start with.. lots of fun.. i used to build my own arrows over beers with my hunting buddy.
Lots of fun
Thank you for making this vid
. It has sparked my jnterest again.
These 10 basic tips are so very well explained 👏
Thank you!
Thank you for watching and the nice feedback!
You make great videos! Thank you for keeping archery alive. 🙂
Thanks for watching!
Thanks Tara , great presentation and advice well given , strange how even experienced archers can slip into basic errors , best wishes from the UK x
Glad it was helpful!
great teacher thanks for the info , caught my arm on my 3rd shot today just before watching this so gave me a laugh and my first lesson :) you have the most beautiful smile to so that helped .
I wouldn't consider myself an expert in any way - but I have some little skill with archery - great to review the basics! Well done! Well presented. LOVED the Cameo with Titus!
Thank you very much. It's helpful to me.
Liked and subscribed. So informative, I'm practically doing all these mistake except loading arrow. So gonna fix them all, thank you so much
Great points here, as a beginner I grip too hard and first couple of lessons I got a blister from the top of the grip on my hand because of that! will try the looser grip for sure.
Great info, thank you! I started archery 2 months ago.
Good luck! Glad it was helpful!
Great video. Thanks for these checks. God bless
Great videa, as a leaner myself and reason im here is because ive not started my course yet so for about two months been constantly watching vids on form ect. I'm happy to say im doing everything youre saying. Only thing ive not done and this now makes sense to why my arrows go to the left as a right handed archer, i use Huntington arrows and never realised why one fletcher is white. Now i know. Thankyou so much as this will really help my already good bunching. Definitely a follow from a new and hopefully competitive archer, even at 52 i cant see why not.
Thanks for the nice words! Have fun on the range - archery is a great sport for any age!
I am totally new to archery, I watched this to prepare, get key points on how to do well and avoid beginner's mistakes on my first day of lesson, next week! Though I still might commit mistakes on my upcoming lessons but at least I would know how to deal with it more efficiently, thank you so much for this video! 🖤 So glad that I found your channel🤧
Glad it was helpful!
That was very educational.
Excellent Video Tara, especially the bow hand and anchor point info, it does take time for these points to become second nature, lovely background too, reminds me of Australia. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for the kind words!
Awesome video! So clearly explained. Thank you so much!!!
Glad you liked it!!
I’m not gonna lie, I has hoping to learn something new. I didn’t but you did give me some things I didn’t think of to help a new shooter. Thank you 🙏
Very informative, as an OIF Veteran I'm brand new to archery.
Helpful, just right for complete beginners. Looks a nice part of the world.
Thank you, David!
Thank you Terra, I'm new to learning. That was good teaching.
Glad it was helpful!
thank you, so very much. I shoot a 55# Bear Magnum Recurve, it was made in the late seventies or very early 80's. I've been asking "pro shop" people why my shot is inconsistent. They couldn't tell me. I am totally guilty of violating #4, my release was an "open the fingers" style with no follow through. I'm eager to see how this will improve. Thanks again, God bless you!
Great video Tara, love these tips!
💪🏹🎯🔥
Thank you!
You're awesome, and thank you so much.. It helped me a lot, and now I am teaching my kids the same..
Happy to help!
Very informative video for beginner archers.
Learning something new. I'm going to interest. Thank you teacher. I liked your class. Your ten point drive correctly very good. Salute
Glad it was helpful!
Straight & e@sy to understand explanation on mistakes and how to fix them. Thank so much for this! Best regards from Germany, Steve
OMG! That's all the mistake I make all the times! Thanks for the sharing!
This was sooo informative and interesting! Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
I bought a Bear Grizzly two days ago. Kept the weight at 40 because my mistake has always been over bowing. Starting at 5 yards and will work back a couple yards at a time. Tried your 2 second hold before release and the release follow through. Made a big difference. Now going to try adding the thumb into my anchor point. I have zero chance of twisting my arm like you did so will probably always need the arm guard. Subscribed.
That’s awesome you got got a bow! Glad the tips helped…keep us all updated on your shooting journey!
Thank you very much! Very nice video! Now I'm ready for the Olympics 🎉
Very educational video. It helped me a lot. Thank you so much.
I'm so glad it helped! Thanks for watching!
Thank you!! This is so helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
So nice of you making these vids
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Fantastic instructions and well presented
Glad you liked it
Very informative. I have never shot a recurve.❤❤😊.....compound only.
seen several videos...by far the most useful......... raymond x
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for sharing! I will keep working on more - let me know if you have any video ideas!
Excellent video! Thanks
Glad you liked it!
When your tslking about follow thru and you go to grab a arrow that isnt there.. you didnt flinch.. flawless delivery 💪
Ha! When I watched to video during editing - I thought that was pretty flawless, too! Thank you for noticing the small details and sharing - because I had the same thoughts! LOL
Hi Coach. I would say this is a great video even for people who have been shooting a bit longer. It's got most of the main mistakes in it, and is to the point! It's so easy to fall into bad habits, particularly if you're not under active coaching and have no-one telling you your posture or alignment is out etc. Bookmarked!
Thank you for watching and sending along the kind words!
Excellent. Thank you.
You are welcome!
Good tips.
Follow through is one i never klnew,,,thanks,
Me, as a beginner at the age of 12, this video is so much helpful for me because i started training two months ago and i still make some of these mistakes, but I'll try to work with these tips! Thanks for the help
This makes me so happy! I started shooting at the age of 8/9 years old. It's so important to learn good habits from the beginning! So great job learning and researching! Keep working hard, and I know you are going to be an awesome shooter. Keep me updated on your shooting journey!
My brother and I started shooting at 7 and 6. I've shot compound, recurve and longbow for nearly 40 years. We used to do 3D shoots all over the state of Maine until we graduated high-school and had to start adulting.
Suddenly my interest in archery increases 10 fold 😍
Yeah, great video, thanks!
I just started archery and I watched videos with many different men to explain about archery and I have to say that you are 200 times better than them.
One more time which a woman puts down all the men in their own territory.
Bravo 🎉
Thank you for watching! I think teaching beginners how to shoot for over 20 years has helped me explain it in an easy way!
I didn't realize anyone could make that many mistakes in just a few seconds, but I'm down with it. Thanks for the 411.
haha - you're welcome!
Tara: I saw something in the camera when you were talking about elbow position. You didn't do anything wrong, but your words didn't match your technique. You were telling beginners to "keep the elbow up high" but not the why it is important, When you kept your elbow up high, you also aligned your whole with your arrow, so that your aim is consistent, and the power of the bow was transferred in a straight line, which also give you a smoother and more consistent release. Excellent form btw. I had to learn how to shoot a bow by watching people do it right, and then correcting what I did wrong. I never had any coaching, but I watched your video and saw it right away. 😀
Very informative
Awesome thanks 👊🏻🏹
OMG this is so detailed and well-explained! Thx! love from China 🇨🇳
i have a question tho, do u put ur fingers on the face or under the chin. My coach says under the chin but a lot of people doing archery do otherwise.
With barebow, it depends if you string walk or gap shoot. If you gap shoot, you are typically around the corner of smile. In Olympic Recurve Archery, you will anchor under the chin. So, it would depend if you are shooting olympic recurve or barebow. Hope that helps!
thx a lot! @@ArcheryHouse
Great videos thank you helps to improve on my practice 👍
Happy to help!
Been shooting for a couple of months and didn't know most of these haha. Super helpful!!
So glad it helped!
Excellent lesson. I shoot Longbow not Recurve but I enjoyed the lesson. Great Instructor
Thanks Teacher, good and very helpful class👍👍😊
Thank you! 😃
Thank you ❤
You're welcome 😊
Great tips, Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
