@@halloweendonut4355 it depends on how clunky they are. i feel like, at least for me, they hinder your movement in your hands and/or accidentally mess up the shot. but if it’s thin enough i guess it can work??? though i personally don’t recommend it

When I was younger I wanted to learn how to shoot bows like medieval adventurers, but the local archery club only had, in my young words, 'ugly bows' (aka compound bows). So, I got a pretty cheap recurve bow and a leather glove at a ren fair and I was super excited to try it out. UA-cam wasn't really a thing then, so I just went in completely blind. After a few shots, the string came off and hit me right in the face. Had a red line going right through my face for days and dropped it after that.
Was thinking of getting back into it with some better research this time (and a better bow haha), so this video is a great help, thanks!

Excellent advice!! I agree with every point you made. But I'd like to reiterate your point about starting out with a low draw weight bow. If you are struggling to pull the bow back, it's difficult to focus on shooting. If it's easy to pull, it's a lot more fun too. Great video, thanks for posting.

Thank you for this. The golf ball idea is great. I've been practicing for a couple weeks with a pretty badly warped, traditional recurve bow. I'm assuming this isn't going to help my aim? I don't know. I'm a total newbie. My upper back and my abs are pretty sore so I think my form is decent. My release has been a pain though. After recording myself in slow motion I noticed two things.
One, just before I loose each arrow, 9/10 times my draw arm moves forward an inch or two. Two, when I release, I tend to pull my hand away from my cheek instead of letting it glide back. Even though I am consciously telling myself to do that, it won't. Being able to imagine a golf ball on my shoulder and giving myself the objective of gently grabbing it I think will help with my grouping drastically.

ha! what timing. i bought my first bow cause of your channel 2 weeks ago, and now i've bought my first traditional bow just yesterday. i'm already in love with archery.
I had a question i was wondering if you could answer, the longbow I just bought is bamboo backed and it has a very light beige stain. I'm interested in dying it a darker colour, and wondering what the best way to do that would be and if it would compromise the integrity of the wood at all.
i'm also interested in wood burning or in some way putting some designs on the front of the bow, and again wondering if that would at all comrpomise the integrity of the wood. hopefully you can let me know because google sends back mixed results !

nice video! its weird... that golf ball exercise it's awesome! I believe you have a better form with the band, I've noticed that you move your head toward the arrow to make your anchor point, I believe you have to bring the arrow to your head, not the other way.. maybe I'm mistaken or maybe it's just a bad habit. ;) cool!

    HI ALL
My comment on learning and maintaining instinctive memory is to.
#1 shoot from close enough range that the outcome is certain "input only good data "
Only when you can hit the mark with every shoot, should you allow yourself to advance.
#2 You will never will the arrow to the mark. "Remove your self as an obstacle to the shot"
#3 Create a solid balanced platform for the shot.
#4 Do not dwell on a miss." If you have done your part it is not a concern of yours"
I like to think of it as a magic trick. Just because you know how it is done doesn't mean that you can pull it off. Only you can polish the trick. And you will if you are honest with your self about your effective range.

Damn great video for a beginner, which I am despite my have shot bow for years, one thing: I think the more fingers you put on the string the easier it will be to drow and the more difficult to have a clean release, I personally use thumb draw or Slavic release (1 and 2 fingers) and I find it great, also have you ever tried shooting with one of these stiles, with the arrow on the right side of the bow? It makes you able to shoot more arrows in less time, and it's really fun

I used to shoot Mediterranean, but I tried Slavic a couple weeks back and I really liked it. I was already shooting off of the thumb side of the bow and happened to be Slavic. With Mediterranean, my finger above the arrow would always get pinched between the arrow and the string and would start hurting after many shots. Also, I can get a much better anchor point with this style. I can put the arrow right up against my face because the top finger isn't in the way.

@@davidkhrystenko what I prefer the most about Slavic drow is that you can put the arrow on the string, draw and shoot basically in one single movement

I came here to learn about archery, not about super product you want me to sell on my first video about archery. Dislike for you and your chanel. Sell it to someone else.

Have you ever considered speaking at half the speed? It would be much easier to follow for a beginner!

Good lord, take a deep breath...I feel like beginner archers need to slow down and get the key things right. Why the rush?!

If your arms and elbows are inline with the arrow. Your fingers aren't toqueing the arrow up or down. But letting it release clean on target.

Strange, I was taught to put the nock/string to my cheek and push the bow out. It was explained that you have more power on the push then the pull.

We have the same taste. I would also like to know. It’s a powerful piece IMO. Belongs in a scene of trial, tribulation or triumph. Not product promotion. Lol😂
I believe at one point or another, there was an app that would listen to any music being played, and it was really good at identifying what that music was. I don’t know if it was good enough to recognize special audio clips like this, though.
