+PaleoSteno There are also "thermodynamic reasons" for choosing mammals as inteligent beings. Cold blooded creatures like reptiles had a steady but relatively slow flow of blood through their internal organs [they could in theory have short "bursts" of brillancy for a few seconds, but then they will go "back to profound stupidity" for most of the day]. Small birds like parrots get to mantain those requirements for "constant inteligence" because of their more efficient neural pathways [necessary to fly]; while larger birds like a pelican hiting the "squared neuronal surface vs cubic brain mass" problem [the more mass their body has, the less developed the brain becomes]. Zootopia did the 'animals living like humans' thing better than any film. Such as the choice of having all the characters as Mammals is kinda clever while other films involving
Reptiles and other Non-Mammals probably have reasons in canon and out of it for not being anthropomorphic. In canon, likely it was just that, being the age of the mammal in a sense, mammals had the ability to develop further while reptiles had just gone out of evolutionary favour. Out of canon, it was probably so that the polar bears had something to eat.

It is easier stick to mammals as that is what humans are. I can tell you from experience with the furry community, things get tricky when you want to anthropomorphize non-mammalian creatures and want maintain their original animal characteristics. Besides, it helps explain how there is still a food source for the predator species beyond them just eating fish.

+PaleoSteno I saw the film a few months. I thought it was really good. Damn good in fact =). It's like you said, Disney is sorta going through another renaissance. I've seen that they are relying less, and less on Pixar, and more, and more on their own animation studio. And that's a good thing.
I have seen this movie twice now. Easily my new favorite Disney movie. I think many people are surprised at how well this movie has been received, and how much they like it. I fell in love with this movie since the first teaser trailer with Nick describing what the animals of Zootopia are like. I cannot wait for this movie to be released on blu-ray.
I have seen this film, and let me say: It was pretty good! By far one of my favorite Disney films in a while. Animation is great, nice story line, very distinguishable characters, and all around great surroundings to it. It almost makes me wanna become a furry myself XD
nightshadow989 I don't know if I will ever become a full on furry, but I understand them and kinda am alright with them now. I kinda like the pics a bit more now after seeing the reason why people like them. So no more weird comments about you guys from me.
This movie was seriously great. It's been a while when I saw a film more than once in a theatre - let alone 3 times - especially when 2 of those 3 were IMAX showings. There is just so much stuff to see and the characters were so likable that I enjoyed it just as much with each viewing.
I haven't actually seen Zootopia yet but I'm seeing it with my best friend this Saturday. I've been excited for this movie ever since I saw the trailer for it last year during Inside Out and I've heard nothing but good things since its come out.
im a fur..and i loved zootopia..not just because of the fact they were anthros in the movie..but because of the messages in the movie..the messages about discrimination ...these issues dont get addressed enough in our society..and doing so like this to where kids can even under stand it..was just an awesome thing to do :)
My friend went to go see the movie and the theater had SO many furriers. Heck, one point during the movie, they started howling. 😐 I wish I made that up...
Charlie Gareginyan Damn good thing I gave it up a while ago. Sorry man. ;-; (That comment is old btw and I never went to the premier or whatever, I saw it like a normal perosn.) And sorry if I lash out more than I should. I just use it as a vent.
Good review can't wait to see this movie tomorrow. This might just be an opinion thing, but the only thing is that I feel the 2nd Renaissance for Disney might have actually started with their movie Bolt and onward. Since that film all their movies have been pretty well received, it's just something small though. Speaking of Renaissance, do you feel Animation in general is going through a period like that? We do get duds here and there, but I think people just completely block out all the Bad shows and movies of the 90s Renaissance.
+Zak Wood Apparently, from what I've read, Bolt is considered the end of the Post-Renaissance Era of Disney films, and the era we're in now is the Disney Revival which started with Princess and the Frog.
+Zak Wood I absoultely agree with this. Bolt was the first movie since the 90s that got me really excited about Disney. Depending on who you ask Bolt is either the last film before the second renaissance or the start of it. It's really a matter of opinion.
Zootopia was freaking fantastic, i just watched it today and I'm in love with it. I do agree that the universe is a bit flawed for only having mammals.
If that's the case, then all the generations that grew up with cartoons of the 40s and Beyond as Bugs Bunny, woody woodpecker, Pink Panther are considered furries. That definition is wrong, if so then Belle from Beauty and the beast and all the writers, directors and all the 800 employees who worked on this movie , the creators of Crash bandicoot and Sly Cooper to name a few are considered furries. I checked so many videos explaining about furries and it stated that when someone creates an anthropomorphic animal, and gives it a character and defining traits to represent him or her self then that what makes a person a furry. Hope this helps.
The movie had a moment that almost made me cry. I know it sound pathetic but that almost never happens with me. This is definitely one of my favorite animated films now.
I think they did mention that it's only mammals in the movie (minus apes of any kind) that live in zootopia. And maybe in the entire world to be honest - reptiles and birds could just as easily be like the reptiles and birds that we encounter in real life if this is just a mammal society. But that last part is just a guess.
jokes aside from the title: i don't think Disney is going the "furry route" on this film. i mean, they have made other movies with anthropomorphic animals like Robin Hood, the ideas of using animals as characters has been used FAR beyond Disney itself. look at books that go back to the 18-17 century. animals are used as characters because they act like us in ways and because of quotes like "sly as a fox" and stuff like that.
Even farther back from the 18th century. You can trance human like animals as far early Mesopotamian type societys. I also agree with the furry thing. I don't think this movie was made with that group of people in mind but I know im going to use safe search with this movie :p.
+BirdComixStudios This is pretty much my thought on the matter. -One brief shot of the city as Judy's taking the train showed a building with "Fish" in its name; this may have been a restaurant. -The characters keep reiterating that they've evolved past their ancestry; mammals are relatively closer to humanoids than reptiles, fish, cetaceans, etc. Brief tangent; Iron Claw is a furry fantasy tabletop RPG that gets around the issue of predation of sentient species by having several reptilian creatures as beasts of burden and food sources.
To be honest, I am a neko (cat) furry. Sexually I think it is fine because it isn't beastiality- it is more viewing them as humans with animal characteristics. I'd also like to get rid of the stereotypes that we all like wearing fur suits and stuff- I could, but personally I enjoy just maybe cat paw gloves, cat ears and a tail. Also- I saw the movie and I was not 'yiffing' during the film. Not all furries do that! Anyways, it was a great movie- very educational and cute and enjoyable. It makes you think a lot xD This was a good video by the way. I subscribed. (:
Great movie and I especially loved that Judy wasn't perfect and even her positive qualities actually caused realistic trouble at times. Made her such a relatable character. Also pleasantly surprised at the depth of Nick and that the film didn't QUITE go the way I expected. It still was a bit predictable though, if you watched the trailers multiple times like I did :p
Zootopia was beautiful movie. Funny, smart, and heartfelt. It held a lot of real world symmetry that many people could defiantly relate to. The acting was phenomenal and very emotional. Despite just one small problem with the climax, I give this movie five stars.
I understand how reptiles wouldn't fit in, but I at least think birds would have fit in with them just fine. They would maybe have a different city specific for them like the rodents did, but its very accessible for flight.
I never was into "talking animals", even as a little kid, so I didn't think I would like this. I was so wrong. I LOVE Zootopia! No doubt one of my favorite movies ever.
With the success of this movie I think a sequel is possible, also there was no appearance of apes as well. So, if there is a sequel we might see apes, reptiles, amphibian, fishes, and birds. I can see that happening and with them doing a sequel of Wreck-it-Ralph and Frozen, then chances are this movie will get a sequel too.
I suspect the lack of reptiles, birds, and fish is important and intentional. After all, the predators have to have something to eat. They don't say "and then the predators became vegetarians and everything was rainbows." There is a fish market in tundra town, and I suspect chicken may be as common to consume by some in their world as it is in ours.
I loved this movie. But there was only one question on my mind as I watched it: what do the predators eat if they can't eat prey? How do the predators sustain themselves?
The movie may have been over 90 minutes long but once it ended it felt like I just watched a thirty minute movie short. The animation is impressive as wells as the main story and plot twist (which I won't spoil). And the references, I think this is the first children's movie that referenced Breaking Bad by having two characters named Walter and Jesse, in the scene with a drug lab as well.
If you ask me, I thought it was a powerful movie! The visuals are stellar, the writing is fantastic, the message and themes are remarkable to teach both kids _and_ adults, and I just love a lot of what it included. This was the first movie I got to see this year, and it was more than worth the price of admission.
Loved the movie. Just wished it hadn't been so blunt about the message of discrimination. I understand that some kids might not understand a heavier topic like that, but it still felt they were a tiny bit too preachy. Also wished it would have had more humor. Other than that, the characters were very likable and the animation was some of the best I've ever seen.
This movie was so much fun ^^ I actually saw it 2 weeks ago (it seems in Europe is premiered on Feb 17) it was greeat. I loved the design, I loved the jokes, it was actually smart, especially for a mystery movie. Also aside from the theme of prejudice, it also had the theme of the Ideal vs the Reality - Judy was idealistic about Zootopia while Nick was disillusioned with the reality and learnt to abuse it and they needed to find balance. As for the birds and reptiles, I believe this world operates on similar premise as One Piece Mangas take on the Mink tribe where it were mammals that 'evolved'. This would also explain what do the carnivores eat. Still they might retcon it later. This also explains why there are no domestic cats and dogs. One of the early tags for this was similar to "Good Dinosaurs" - "What if humans never showed up?", so this means we only get big cats, wolves instead of dogs, and steers instead of cows and bulls.
Glad I stayed away from the trailers they don't ruin that much but some stuff should've been left out. The bit with Mr. Big had me laughing on the floor.
Just saw this movie today, and... yeah. It was pretty great. Being a cop story at its core, I thought it felt prey (pun intended) to some cop story cliches (the bright-eyed fresh-out-of-the-academy optimist, the hard-ass police chief, etc.), but it worked around them well. And I LOOOOOVE the self-awareness in some scenes; the Disney bootleg DVD scene was hilarious. I personally would've done the ending a little differently, but it's great regardless. A solid A-minus.
Thanks for the review, Paleo! I loved this movie as well (I'm a furry). I especially loved the relationship that develops between Judy and Nick to eventually become a pretty strong friendship (and at the end, something more perhaps... but strong friendship is fine by me) between two animals/people that were bullied and discriminated in their childhood. There are one or two moments that felt forced and cliché in my opinion, but I won't spoil anything. This movie is still so great, and has proven beyond my expectations as a viewer. And yes, just like you, I want birds and reptiles in the sequel!!! Especially reptiles, because I'm especially a scaly.
On your point of the 'birds and reptiles', we still have predators/carnivores, so I'm sure we can say it's safe to assume they're diet consists of MOSTLY meat (if anything). So birds, reptiles, and any animal that ISN'T a mammal, is probably what they mostly eat. Seeing how the predator would PROBABLY be arrested (at the least) if they were caught eating the prey/herbivores.
Living in France, I saw it, like, more than two weeks ago, so I don't remember all of it. I actually thought it was really good. (MAYBE SPOILERS, I DON'T KNOW. IN DOUBT, DON'T READ) I was (pleasantly) surprised, because I thought the film would only be about finding the missing mammal, and it turned out it was a lot more interesting than that. Really, the really interesting part comes after Judy finds the missing mammals. Overall, a great film, I'd recommend it to anyone.
I LOVED zootopia to death. Not just because of the beautiful animation, jokes and story writing but also the message. Iv heard a lot about zootopia and specifically its message and the 2 things iv heard the most when talking about its message were: Discrimination and Racism. Now, when i went into the theater to see zootopia, i was expecting the message to be a cliche 'racism is bad' moral, but what i personally got from it was a bigger message: Racism, when you turn it around, is *still racism* That the bullied can become the bully's and vise versa, if you turn it around and the message hit like a brick wall. Not to mention the fact that the dark, sad and surprisingly disturbing moments hit hard. When the clips of Nicks backstory played, i cried. FREAKING CRIED. Honestly, the only way that this film could be better, is a part 2 (And having birds and reptiles, because tbh i was looking forward to how they were going to do the birds and such, and was a bit disappointed when they didn't.)
I loved how the movie tackled some really dark and topical themes like Racism, Drugs etc. in such a professional way. I loved the movie and i want to own a copy myself. Great review, and keep up the good work. take care, man! :)
I just came back from seeing this movie! It was fantastic! I agree that you all should see it. It was better than I expected, and my expectations were pretty high. 9.5 out of 10
>Tfw I'm looking to stream zootopia off UA-cam >I see "Furries are taking over" and I think it's a bash on Furries >See name Paleo >Oh shit don't tell me it's that Paleo >NOPENOPENOPENOPENOPE.Jpeg It's not you Paleo, it's me.
I was fully confident that I would enjoy the movie, but I didn't know how much. I was happy that I was very pleased with the movie. It really does feel like a fully developed movie rather than maybe it may have led on with the trailers. Visually it's great, but there are much deeper messages that I think people can really take away from this. This isn't just a silly goofy movie, it has purpose! It's movies like these that really show that animated movies can be and should be movies that people of all ages can enjoy and take something away from. This isn't just a movie that appealed to me liking furry stuff, but this is a great movie in general!
SPOILERS i guess: i liked that the president was a lion because of the hate or fear that the preys still have for hunters even though they chose him as leader its like with obama and all the surprisingly heavy stuff that the movie deals
I thought it was a really great movie! My only problem is that I find hard to believe that the entire police department failed to do what Judy and Nick does despite the fact that they had much more resources to use.

I have seen this film, and let me say: It was pretty good! By far one of my favorite Disney films in a while. Animation is great, nice story line, very distinguishable characters, and all around great surroundings to it. It almost makes me wanna become a furry myself XD
+『ѕραттѕ』 join the darkside we have cookies :P Lol
nightshadow989 I don't know if I will ever become a full on furry, but I understand them and kinda am alright with them now. I kinda like the pics a bit more now after seeing the reason why people like them. So no more weird comments about you guys from me.
『ѕραттѕ』 lol ill hold you to that :P
nightshadow989 Alright hahah
This movie was seriously great. It's been a while when I saw a film more than once in a theatre - let alone 3 times - especially when 2 of those 3 were IMAX showings. There is just so much stuff to see and the characters were so likable that I enjoyed it just as much with each viewing.
I haven't actually seen Zootopia yet but I'm seeing it with my best friend this Saturday. I've been excited for this movie ever since I saw the trailer for it last year during Inside Out and I've heard nothing but good things since its come out.
I love it i fall in love Disney animation movies every year.
im a fur..and i loved zootopia..not just because of the fact they were anthros in the movie..but because of the messages in the movie..the messages about discrimination ...these issues dont get addressed enough in our society..and doing so like this to where kids can even under stand it..was just an awesome thing to do :)
Get lost.
same
agreed
My love for this movie is totally not my bias towards anthropomorphic animals speaking, I swear.
My friend went to go see the movie and the theater had SO many furriers. Heck, one point during the movie, they started howling. 😐 I wish I made that up...
+umCallum Way...
Oh sure. Fucking sure.
Ignore the trolls, I believe you
Charlie Gareginyan Damn good thing I gave it up a while ago. Sorry man. ;-; (That comment is old btw and I never went to the premier or whatever, I saw it like a normal perosn.) And sorry if I lash out more than I should. I just use it as a vent.
Charlie Gareginyan Thanks for the suggestion :)
hey.. what about Aquatic animal (fish kind)
Why does every cut end with you tilting your head?
Cannot unsee.
ikr
+thespeedyyoshi This is what I've been thinking xD
PaleoSteno oh okay
+Zak Wood I absoultely agree with this. Bolt was the first movie since the 90s that got me really excited about Disney. Depending on who you ask Bolt is either the last film before the second renaissance or the start of it. It's really a matter of opinion.
Zootopia was freaking fantastic, i just watched it today and I'm in love with it. I do agree that the universe is a bit flawed for only having mammals.
Very excited to go watch this with some friends as soon as I have a day off!
What I thought?
Judy x Nick = SHIPSHIPSHIP
me in the theatre
I've just seen movie. I already have an idea for a sequel.
I saw this film twice. No regrets.
Same!
Don't leave out Winnie the Pooh! That movie is seriously underrated.
jokes aside from the title: i don't think Disney is going the "furry route" on this film. i mean, they have made other movies with anthropomorphic animals like Robin Hood, the ideas of using animals as characters has been used FAR beyond Disney itself. look at books that go back to the 18-17 century. animals are used as characters because they act like us in ways and because of quotes like "sly as a fox" and stuff like that.
Even farther back from the 18th century. You can trance human like animals as far early Mesopotamian type societys. I also agree with the furry thing. I don't think this movie was made with that group of people in mind but I know im going to use safe search with this movie :p.
lol right?
+crcoghill I do know one thing for sure, if anyone asks some Furries what Furries are, they will point to Zootopia and say, "we're fans of that".
um....not really. i mean, i like furries on a level and mainly because of the art i see online like on Deviantart.
crcoghill I'm confused by your comment. I don't understand what you are trying to convey.
No birds and reptiles? Well the predators need to eat something right?
It makes you think a lot xD
This was a good video by the way.
Anyone catch the breaking bad reference in the movie?
Zootopia was beautiful movie. Funny, smart, and heartfelt. It held a lot of real world symmetry that many people could defiantly relate to. The acting was phenomenal and very emotional. Despite just one small problem with the climax, I give this movie five stars.
You have the same bookshelf as me
I understand how reptiles wouldn't fit in, but I at least think birds would have fit in with them just fine.
I got back watching it and I got to agree it's an amazing movie even its music was amazing
Lizards, fish, insects, etc.
And the reference to The Godfather, that we can all agre that it was...
*Puts on glassses*
A Big reference.
did the intro remind you guys a chadtronic's intro
If you ask me, I thought it was a powerful movie! The visuals are stellar, the writing is fantastic, the message and themes are remarkable to teach both kids _and_ adults, and I just love a lot of what it included. This was the first movie I got to see this year, and it was more than worth the price of admission.
Thanks for the review! I really wanna see it so now I'm waiting to get it!
I saw it! I was really suprised how good it was! I didn't see that ending coming haha, an ill definitely buy the dvd haha! GREAT REVIEW AS ALWAYS💗
I can't wait to see this. Hopefully I can see it tomorrow.
I loved the movie
Couldn't exactly describe why until I saw sparks review. It's so clear to me now.
This movie was so much fun ^^
I actually saw it 2 weeks ago (it seems in Europe is premiered on Feb 17) it was greeat.
One of the early tags for this was similar to "Good Dinosaurs" - "What if humans never showed up?", so this means we only get big cats, wolves instead of dogs, and steers instead of cows and bulls.
really great movie (no surprise why, John Lasseter was involved).
NO birds or lizards only mammals, the master race.
And the idea of no birds and reptiles was a creative decision.
I don't know if I agree with the birds and reptiles complaint. Not everything needs to be sentient, the carnivores have to eat something.
Aww man, I just realized they didn't have birds or reptiles right when you said it. That makes me sad..Reptiles are awesome.
This movie is amazing. I especially like how the movie tackles its theme of prejudice with a lot of moral grey.
My favorite Disney movie beside Pixar
"DON'T TELL ME WHAT I KNOW TRAVIS!"
I want to buy this movie and re-watch it.
wake me up wake me up inside cant wake up wake me up inside save me save me from the darkness
I LOVED this film!
Wreck it Ralph was Disney???
Wow I was wrong
+LPSNikkoStudios Oh, what, you thought it was DreamWorks.
hey what the hell, i like chicken little :(
It started with chicken little actually
I LOVED zootopia to death. Not just because of the beautiful animation, jokes and story writing but also the message. Iv heard a lot about zootopia and specifically its message and the 2 things iv heard the most when talking about its message were: Discrimination and Racism. Now, when i went into the theater to see zootopia, i was expecting the message to be a cliche 'racism is bad' moral, but what i personally got from it was a bigger message:
Racism, when you turn it around, is *still racism*
That the bullied can become the bully's and vise versa, if you turn it around and the message hit like a brick wall.
There's no short b/c its not a Pixar movie
insects are also animals
and fish
whales and dolphins are mammals
I Person in my Class (odly enough my girlfriend) Spoiled Zootopia when we were talking about Poems.
I just came back from seeing this movie! It was fantastic! I agree that you all should see it. It was better than I expected, and my expectations were pretty high.
9.5 out of 10
I neeeeed to see this movie
Its really good
>Tfw I'm looking to stream zootopia off UA-cam
>I see "Furries are taking over" and I think it's a bash on Furries
>See name Paleo
>Oh shit don't tell me it's that Paleo
>NOPENOPENOPENOPENOPE.Jpeg
It's not you Paleo, it's me.
I small Oscar Gold here do you. This movies was so good that if it doesn't win the Oscar that would be discrimination it self.
SPOILERS i guess: i liked that the president was a lion because of the hate or fear that the preys still have for hunters even though they chose him as leader its like with obama and all the surprisingly heavy stuff that the movie deals
It was awesome. Very interesting theme in the movie. Also very timely
I thought it was a really great movie! My only problem is that I find hard to believe that the entire police department failed to do what Judy and Nick does despite the fact that they had much more resources to use.
