“Little by little we lose our friends” (Apollo’s death) “We lose everything” (Rocky’s wealth/championship title) “We keep losing and losing” (Adrian and Paulie’s death) “What the hell am I living around here for, I got no reason to go on” (Rocky’s cancer) “But with you kid, I got a reason” (Adonis)
It's hard to see Rocky loss everyone he had but Adonis gave him the will to keep going and just in real life we just have to keep fighting no matter what happens in our lives. I have learned from my grandfather before he passed away that you keep on going no matter what life throughs at you. That's also what I learned watching the Rocky and Creed movies is you get beat down but you get yourself back up and keep fighting till your last breath.
“Well with you kid boy I got a reason to go on and I’m gonna stay alive and I will watch you make good and I’ll never leave you” poor micky loved rocky like his own son, always gets me teared up watching this scene
Darian Canada yep this scene alone really shows how much respect and love these two men had for one another with something you'd see from a father to a son which is deep.
"You was the Angel." You don't understand this until you lose one of those people who really were a living Angel by your side. You don't know what you have until it's gone.
fun fact that thing about him staying alive because of rocky and nature being smarter than people think was said in an interview by Cus D'amato, mike tyson's trainer before he died, the character of mickey was largley inspired by cus
Amazing scene... and in Creed it was Adonis that gives Rocky the motivation to live on. The quote "Little by little, we lose our friends, we lose everything. We keep losing and losing till we say, you know, "What the hell am I livin' around here for? I got no reason to go on." hits me so hard..
Exactly! In Creed Rocky realize he had a reason to live with training Apollo's kid and forming a good bound to love the kid. I just wish Rocky had that type of relationship with his son but it's whatever since he showed no interest in following after his father or being close to him which is sad.
I cry every single time I watch this scene, I swear. One of the best scenes in the entire series. So emotional, so touching... And Burgess Meredith's acting is beyond stars. He really lives in the scene...
Same. It’s actually the hardest hitting scene throughout all the Rocky and Creed films except for maybe when Rocky finds out about his cancer diagnosis and his “Epic” speech to his son in Rocky Balboa
100% agree with you. The best scenes in the Rocky franchise are not the fight scenes, nor the training montages.....it's the scenes with heart like this one
Every time I watch this scene I tear up every time. This is by far the most underrated scene of all time. "Get up you sun of Bi*$ch cause Micky loves". Get's me every time.
I’m a so called “tough guy” I was a bouncer @ 2 of the biggest strip clubs in Philly! I was the only white boy for 40 blocks in each direction, and i survived a gunshot wound while fighting a guy @ the strip club in Philly (Wizards). But so many parts in rocky have me crying like a little girl because i think about all the good people in my life that loved me & the awesome people I’ve learned from along the way! We are the sum of our interactions with our fellow man!

Basically your bragging about how cool and tough you are and how you were one white boy and you went to strip clubs to tell us you were crying about rocky
He's listing those things to explain how despite a harsh life style this scene was powerful enough to affect him despite being mentally jaded and hardened after a hard life. This might be a tough concept to grasp though, and enjoy being offended by my implications.
Mickey cared about Rocky and share his past experiences with him. Finally when Rock showed up he could finally share all his knowledge with someone and that's so special how he taught him.
I lost my father when I was 16. I hear that piano playing in my head every time I think about the last time him & I had a deep conversation. We ended up hugging & saying we loved each other just like this scene. Don’t take for granted the relationship you men have with your father figures.
Burgess Meredith was extremely powerful in this scene. But Stallone deserves his credit. You figure this movie came 10 years after Rocky III. And the character still struggles with his trainer and mentor being gone. Stallone told that story beautifully just playing off his face!
I lost my dad yesterday evening and this scene hits especially hard now. It just nails it so perfectly how remembering/mourning a really special figure in your life feels. Down to the flashbacks and everything. It's beautiful and spot on.
*"You was the Angel."* (Rocky B.) Loved this emotionally powerful scene. It hits home for me. Brings tears to my eyes. Breaks my 💔😪 I played "Alone in The Ring" and other Bill Conti instrumentals to my brother in the ICU nearly 2 years ago. There were times I would see his eye lids move but never opened. I always ended the night with Rocky, Star Wars, and Superman soundtracks; movies he loved growing up which I love watching no matter how sad it makes me. 💔🥊👼✝️ Happy Birthday my Angel, Pete Bautista Jr. 07/08/1969
I thought the first 2/3 of the movie wasn’t bad, I actually liked how they went back to the streets of the first movie but I just didn’t like how Tommy turns on him. They should have had Tommy get that heart and fire rocky had and fight Kane at the end and beat him to win the title.
This scene hits me so hard. I have watched it numerous times and felt like it was what my parents felt as they passed. You keep losing and losing what am I on this earth for. WOW!!
Kyron Harvey it was not Rocky’s father if followed the series Mickey started training Rocky when he was 20 years old or Rocky started training in Mick’s gym. Rocky had parents but they died when Rocky was young and he has pictures of his parents in his old apartment in the original Rocky. Mickey was a father figure to Rocky not his actual father and Mickey last name was Goldmill.
Burgess Meredith is one of my favorite actors ever. I see how it resonates onto Adonis Creed later and the relevance of life and legacy. This is better than the 3rd Rocky and 6th Rocky imo and it's all due to its scenes like this. I wish the 4th Rocky had a little nod to Mick as he was fighting Drago which in all honesty Mick was helping Rocky in spirit. They could've made us aware of his presence somehow but all we got were montage after montage.
SOMETIMES I KEEP WATCHING THE PART WHERE THE VIEW OF THE RING CHANGES TO THE FILM'S PRESENT DAY, LOOKING AT ALL THE MINOR DETAILS IN THE SCENE THAT HAVE CHANGED IN THE YEARS GONE BY.

I had watched this scene multiple times when I was younger, and it wasn't until early 2010s that I had done a marathon of all the Rocky movies that this scene hit harder. Ever since that day if I get a chance to see this scene again and again, I shed a few tears. This might have not been the best Rocky movie, but this is the best scene Rocky has given us throughout the franchise.
What I love about Rocky V apart from the other Rocky films is that it shows the realism of a not only a boxer's life but an athlete's life in general. The acting was really good, the music was beautifully synced, and it was written very well by Stallone I thought.
Have to agree, Meredith’s acting was nuanced and brilliant. I love that little “huh” he gives after saying “it was his cufflink.” It was the sort of little thing my grandfather might have added to a story like that.
Mickey was like a father figure to Rocky and when he died alot of Rocky’s heart and motivation was lost and what heartbreaks me is that Mickey never began to see Rocky’s true potential R.I.P Burgess Meredith
