But the 1 controlling set screw, doesn’t give a 130 degree marker, to do that’ ! Now what must be done to have both set correctly ?🛡
thank you. I watched another video and the instructure said to make the bottom one different than top one. Yet you said to set them the same temp on both.
We have been to many calls to turn both thermostats to the same temperature because this will cause the reset button to trip if they are not. If you would like to verify and have time you can always check out your water heater manufacturer’s install instructions.

That is never a bad idea, we probably should have mentioned that as a extra precautionary measure. Thanks for bringing this to our attention and for watching!
Other UA-cam videos are telling me I should set the top thermostat slightly higher because hot water rises and it helps even the load on the elements so the bottom doesn’t do the majority of the work. I dunno who to believe!?
bombburrito1 read the manufacturer’s suggestions and follow what they say, however over the years of doing service work some of the problems have been thermostats not set exactly the same. We appreciate you reaching out!! Good luck!
I have a 75 Gallon Marathon (Rheem) water heater and I set the top thermostat at MED and Med is 125 degrees and the bottom is set at low or 120 degrees. I believe this is what the factory setting were (120 degrees). I assume that the temperatures is what you want to be the same. The 2 thermostats are not the same on this unit. The bottom has a medium setting temperature of 150 degrees and the top medium equals 125 degrees .. high setting for the top is 155 degrees and bottom is 180 degrees. Low setting temperature top 95 degrees bottom 120 degrees. This water heater is considered commercial although it is installed in a single family home. The plumber said the top and the bottom should be set the same (Medium) but that caused the water to register at 150 degrees. I really don't know what the factory setting on the thermostats were? I called Rheem and waited hours on hold but no one could tell me how they were originally set. I want the temp to be 120 degrees and I would like to have this water heater work as efficiently as possible. HELP!
There are varying opinions about flushing the water heaters. You could probably find numerous videos on just that alone. We even have one. I personally am not a fan of it but there good arguments on both sides. If you do drain your heater you must absolutely shut down the power first. Great questions ! Thanks for asking and watching our video!
Very well explained Video. However, my Booklet States to have the Top Thermostat Set at 125 Degrees, while Bottom is to be Set at 120 Degrees. After watching your answers, you want both Settings to be at the same Degrees? This is another lesson to be shown. We all need to understand why there's so many different ways to set an Electric Water Heater? We have the Manufacturer's Explanation, then we have a Plumber's Explanation? So who is right to Save a New Electric Water Heater?🤔
I try to go by manufacturers recommendations if at all possible. You have it writing and they are the ones providing the warranty on the product itself. Thanks for a great question and for watching our video!
My water heater looked nothing like this . It had no visible thermostat . The top just had a plug .the bottom had just what I think is a reset button . O It looked like a shotgut shell primer .
I wouldn’t say “ dangerous”, but it is a bad practice when working with live voltage. And, at the end she did say “then well flip our” and it cut off, I’m assuming breaker, as it’s the only thing one would flip in this case, logically.
Lucky I watched the “rest water heater” video before this one so I made sure to do that before messing with anything, I was kind of confused on why she didn’t mention it on this one. Thanks for lookin out!
This lady didn't mention to shut off water heater breakers before working under the panels..... Who knows how many life's were lost in following these video instructions
It should help, because you won’t need to use as much hot water in the mix when showering. However, you’ll also be paying for more electricity to keep the water hotter. If your electricity prices are high and your budget is tight, keep an eye on those bills. Also, if you have a larger household or use a lot of hot water, you might benefit from a larger tank (if that’s within your power). Or you could consider things like splitting hot water use times - eg could some household members shower in the evening instead of the morning, or could you use a delayed start on things like your laundry so it washes at midday or during the night (or wash on cold).
We recently installed a step in tub for Mom, I purchased a new 50 gallon heater with a booster on it. Its still not filling up all the way above jets. What is the highest I can turn up
You absolutely can turn the power off first. If you have no leaks or water on hands I typically do not, however please flip the water heater breaker off if you feel uncomfortable. Safety First!!
You should. But I just changed mine and did not. I figured just changing the thermostat was safe enough. If I was dealing with the wires I would have shut off power
What if you have to turn the hot all the way on in shower & just a tiny bit on the cold? It's hot enough but wondered why need hot all the way on and just a touch of cold, would upping temp help that or would you need to adjust the water supply hose type nobs?
If you are not running out of hot water you are good. If you are adding more cold to the hotter water you will use less hot water and not run out as quickly:)
@TappPlumbing Thx but what I meant was the hot has to be all the way on & the cold just a tiny half turn. I don't run out of hot during shower but wondering how I would adjust it to need more cold & less of the hot

I personally think that is an excellent question . The cold water goes into the heater through a tube to the bottom. The hottest water in the tank naturally rises to the top. If there was no element to heat the water in the bottom half of the tank the tank would only be about half full of hot water. The job of the thermostats is to tell the elements when to they need to heat more water. This is the shortest answer I could come with. I really hope it clarifies things for you!

Yeah but why 2 panels?? why 2 thermostats ?? sorry for my ignorance 🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅
